Beat Matching 2 MIDI Regions

Hi,
I have two midi drum regions - one has been recorded by hand to match the audio in my song, and the other has been taken from third party MIDI drum software as a basic MIDI drum pattern, which is exactly in time / quantised. What I want to do is to keep the timing of the hand recorded beat, but to use the drum pattern of the more accurate software pattern in my song. My question is, how would you go about doing this? Is there a quick way to achieve this?
I basically want to replace the hand-played pattern with a more professionally played (interesting) one, but keep the timing of the hand-played one!
Thanks for looking at this.

Hi
Try making a groove template of the "Hand" region, then apply it to the other region

  • MIDI region - how do I stop it going blank when I hit record!?!?

    Hi
In Logic 7.2 how can I set it so that when i'm in MIDI region edit view (where i can see the midi notes i've played in) - hitting the record button DOESN'T change the view to a new BLANK region. This is really annoying!!
I might have a beat i've programmed in, and I perhaps want to add in a missed hi-hat sound - and it really helps to SEE the point at which i need to play it!
    Thx

To be honest, I would rather that Logic doesn't do this. I'd rather keep each take as a separate object and keep merging under my control. I usually create a new track for the same instrument and record new info there. From there, I comp my changes (or I may leave it alone if it's MIDI data and I'm not going to print a score).

  • Double-clicking on midi region(s) doesn't center the playhead - why?

This issue is driving me nuts:
Say I have the playhead parked at bar 20 in the arrange window and want to examine the midi notes on all of my tracks in THAT bar. I have 8 midi tracks. I double-click on a midi region and the piano roll opens in the window at the bottom. Sometimes is shows the playhead parked at bar 20, but most of the time it doesn't: it is way off to the left or right of bar 20. This happens when I examine the remaining 7 midi regions by double-clicking on them as well.
If I can't see the playhead, then I have to mouse and scroll and mouse and scroll to get to see the playhead.
It would be much less time-consuming if every midi region I double-clicked showed the playhead in the center of the piano roll, where I parked it at bar 20. After all, THAT is the measure I am examining on every midi track.
    Can Logic do this?

Here is a link to photos showing the problem:

I tried the "set locators" solution which you'll see.
For some strange reason, only the percussion parts are not showing bar 20...

    Hi Charlotte,
You don't say what your version of Windows you have. Assuming XP, go to Start | Run, type DXDIAG and click OK. Click the Sound tab and run the tests to eliminate a hardware problem first of all. If you don't hear anything, check your cables first of all. Also make sure "Mute" isn't checkmarked in your sound setup. You'll find that in Windows Control Panel.
Which browser do you use? If you have Firefox 4, sign up to the HTML5 trial @ http://www.youtube.com/html5
HTML5 is the latest video standard and doesn't require Flash player. Google is in the process of converting all its files to work with the new format. It may solve you problem. If you don't have Firefox 4, you can get it from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/
    IE8 doesn't support HTML5.
To clean out your temp files, go to Start | Run, type: CLEANMGR and click OK. Click OK again to start the utility. Tick all the boxes except "Compress old files" because the latter takes too long, and then click OK. You can run this utility any time you wish by the way.
The above steps will hopefully fix your problem. If not, post here again please.

  • How do you merge the data of two MIDI regions?

How do you merge the data of two MIDI regions into one MIDI region without using copy and paste functions in the piano roll editor?

Sorry - didn't make myself clear. The glue tool would be no good here. I meant that I wanted, for example, to merge the MIDI contents of two regions that are perhaps on different tracks but play back at the same time, i.e. I want to add the 2nd region's MIDI to the 1st region's MIDI, but without having to go into the piano roll editor and cut and paste the data.

  • How do i connect 2 soft synths to 1 midi region?

I have a bassline made from Massive and Scrabee Bass , i want them to booth run of one midi region like a rack in Ableton . I have them booth running together by going to "Environment - Mixer" and link the channel at the top of the strip . the problem is now as i alter the volume on one instrument booth are adjusted . So--
How do i get booth instruments working form one midi region but allowing me to alter volume pan ect seperately , thanks.

Actually it's very easy to do in the Environment.
    1. Create an extra track in the Arrange area. Doesn't matter the type of track as we'll reassign it to something else later.
    2. In the Environment's Mixer layer choose: New > Instrument
    3. Assign the Instrument object (you can rename it if you wish) to the empty track in the Arrange. Loads of ways to do this. My fave is to drag the object from the Environment onto the Track Header in the Arrange area.
    4. Drag one output cable from the Instrument object to one SI channel strip in the Environment. Drag a second output cable from the Inst object to the other SI channel strip.
    5. In the Arrange area move the MIDI region onto the Instrument's track. Done.
You can now independently control the volume, pan, etc on each of the channel strips.
    Hope this helps

  • How do I avoid this unwanted MIDI Region?

This happens at odd moments, but most recently with the Step Input Keyboard, in the Score Editor.
I added a note to a staff and the following occurred:
--A new treble and bass clef appeared in the staff with a line connecting the two staves (bass and treble).
--In the Arrange window, a new region appeared, labelled "midi region", right next to, but separate from, the existing region.
I have to delete this from the Arrange window and try again; usually the second time it's normal.
Can someone tell me why this happens, and how I can prevent it?

No - this limit is meant to guard the client from malicious servers. It is possible to send valid OData feed which will consume lot of memory to parse. This can be done on the XML level or on the OData level. This limit guards against both.
Servers have other ways to limit amount of data returned to the client, the reason there is to guard against expensive query execution
In general a good way to look at OData is to think about it as the "minimum necessary protocol" to do what is needed. We try to keep it that way anyway. It's also stateless (REST...). So the more coupling between client and server, the worse... so to say.
I can imagine having an HTTP header for this purpose, but I don't think that lot of clients would be interested in it.
I think you should approach this limit from the security point of view (that's what it's for). Set it to the maximum amount of memory you're willing to give up to process the response. At least roughly (the memory consumption should be linear to the size
of the input, cases where it's not are guarded by the other options on the MessageQuotas).

  • Can't resize MIDI region

I have encountered several regions while using Logic that won't let me resize them. It will let me resize them to a certain point (let's say I am grabbing the beginning of the region) and then no matter how far I move the beginning of the region to the right its length simply won't change. It's driving me crazy. As I move the pointer to the top left of the region it changes to the resize tool. It will allow me to grab and drag but when I let go of the mouse there is no change to the length of the region.
The region I'm working with currently that has this problem is about 8 measures long, so I know that I'm not trying to make it "too short" or something like that. I'm hoping the solution is just something simple that I'm missing. Thanks in advance.

Sonther - yes I was referring to the start point only.
Samuel - there is a fundamental difference between audio regions and MIDI regions.
Audio regions are simply a "window" onto a larger entity - the audio file itself.
MIDI regions are not windows onto some other data type, they actually contain the MIDI events themselves, therefore they have to be able to encompass the events they contain.
Now, you can reduce the length, because internally Logic has a "length" value. Therefore a region can contain events lasting 8 bars but can have a display in the arrange of 2 bars. However, you can't have events before the start of a region, because Logic doesn't differentiate a "MIDI data starts here for this region" value and a "display the region starting here" value.
It's just the way Logic is currently programmed.
That is why events can go on for longer than the region displays, but not be placed before the region starts.

  • Is it possible to automate software instrument parameters in a MIDI region? And alias the region with the automation?

I am trying to track down a detail about how automation works in Logic Pro X.
What I want to know is:
    1. Can I draw control-point curves (and smoothly bend them) in a MIDI region to automate a software instrument parameter (and/or smart controls)?
    2. Can a region containing this automation be aliased and reused around the timeline (without the automation points being duplicated)?
If this is possible, can someone please post a couple of screenshots - a MIDI region with MIDI Draw automating (for example) the cutoff of an ES M, and screenshots of aliases around the timeline?
    thanks!!
    H

First, I'd recommend going to Track>other>new with same instrument.  This gives you a blank lane to make a region with no notes.
Now, there are two strategies: do some track automation and then convert it to region. You can go into the local view menu and find the option to view MIDI automation and still adjust it.  Now you can make aliases of that region. You need to be careful of accidentally writing new track automation, which is easy to do and can happen if you have 'move automation with regions' on for instance.  If you make sure and delete all the track auto for this parameter you should be good (the line should be barely visible black, if it is highlighted in color, that means there is at least one active node at the beginning).  If the parameter freaks out, instead of following your curve, you can bet there is track automation fighting with the region automation, you might need to tell the automation menu in the track header to show the parameter in question.  None of this is a big deal and after doing it once you'll see.
The other strategy is to assign a controller to a parameter (or use the quick MIDI things on certain instruments - you mentioned ES2, which has that) and you can use the hyper draw in the piano roll.  The view tip from the first strategy still works so you can edit the automation in the arrange.  I prefer the first strategy because the knob you are automating will still move.
If you go to audio tuts plus (something like that) you can find a tut on the first method that's a few years old, and from Logic 9.  Basically the same, you just have to look through different menus for everything.

  • Spinning beach ball when changing length of midi region

I am get a spinning beach ball when trying to change the length (with mouse) of a midi region in the arrange window.
also when the beach ball stops spinning, the midi region hasn't changed its length at all.
    Any ideas?

  • How can I beat match two beat-mapped songs?

    Hi,
I'm pretty confused at the moment - I've been trying to beatmatch two songs, and am not having much luck.
I have two separate project files, each containg one of the two songs I want to beat match. I've done through both of the songs, matched the project tempos to their BPM, and gone through manual beat mapping in the "configure global tracks".
Now what I want to do is take one of the two songs I have beat mapped, and move it to the other project (the two projects are at slightly different BPMs) so that it snaps onto the other project's grid (leaving the two songs beat matched).
I've had no problem dropping apple loops (of varying BPM) onto either of the tracks - they seem to adjust their lengths automatically. I don't really understand why my songs won't do the same thing, since I went through and beat mapped both of them. I even tried exporting them as apple loops, which didn't seem to make any difference.
If you have any insight on how to fix this, I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks

Never mind - I figured it out.
I was converting to apple loops, but the loops I was recording weren't following the new project tempo because I saved them as one-shots as opposed to actual loops (in the convert to apple loops) menu. If you record them as loops, they give you the option when you drag them in to the project to snap them to your current tempo grid.
    Thanks anyway

  • MIDI regions won't play back in Logic X

Suddenly my MIDI regions won't play back. I can hear the notes when when I play on my MIDI controller and when I mark the MIDI notes in the piano roll, but not when play it back in the arrange window. This worked fine the last time I opened the project.
    - I have done a restart of all my equipment, computer and Logic.
    - Nothing is muted - not the track or the regions.
    - The MIDI in/out in the piano roll is ON.
    - The channel strip setting is set to ON.
    - This applies to all instruments.
    - It works as usual for MIDI written using the pen tool, but not for MIDI played on the keyboard.
    - MIDI channel are set to 1 (as seen in the event window).
    - Instrument channel is set to "all".

See if this is the problem.
Is this an imported Logic 9 project file?
Check the track Inspector settings and see if you have any over the top values for some of the settings (like Delay)

  • "Step" playback of MIDI region?

Hi, I'm using Logic for a live set and I want to trigger playback of notes in a MIDI region via a drum pad.
I have a MIDI region on a software instrument track that has notes in it. I want to play back these notes in order, though not necessarily with the same timing.
Is there a way to send either a note or other MIDI message to this track play back the NEXT note in the region? So the same trigger will "step forward" in the region's pattern?

I don't have a clue what you mean there, I'm afraid, but there may be some mileage in the idea of using Touch Tracks in Logic, if I'm guessing.
Its basically a way of triggering a MIDI region - a region can contain just one note if that's all you want, or, obviously, a sequence of notes - it might be worth a look if you haven't tried it, anyway; there's stuff in the manual that tells you enough about it to get you going, I think..
Touch Tracks are created in the Environment but they're pretty straightforward to use, its down to being creative with the MIDI sequences that are triggered and making the music work like that.

  • Spacebar is entering midi regions instead of playing my track

    Hey guys
I'm having a really strang problem and I can't figure out what happend. Everytime I try to play my track using the spacebar it doesn't work. It just enters a new empty midi region. I've looked at the Keycommands and just can't figure out what to do.
I've rebooted my system and still nothing!!!
Anybody knows what might be the problem?
    Cheers

You "looked at" you keycommands? And?
Here's a tip: in the keycommand window, make sure the list is highlighted (as in the pic). Then click the "Key" column header, then hit the spacebar: the first command assigned to it will be selected. Hit spacebar again and the next command assigned to it will be selected, etc. I believe by default the spacebar is assigned to two commands: Play or stop and Play/Stop Selection. If it is indeed also assigned to creating a region, then simply delete that assignment.
If it is not, then simply restarting Logic or even restarting your Mac might help.

  • Garage Band midi regions into Logic?

I know I can open up a garage band file directly into Logic but can I drag and drop midi regions from GB to Logic? I'd try it myself but I'm at work and I've only got Logic at home.

I'm pretty sure you can not drag and drop between the two open applications. You can, however open up your GB project in logic, and drag it to another Logic project that you have open.
