Beating a dead horse but...Insufficient bandwidth error on Tiger 10.4.6

So I'm running a new Macbook pro i just took out of the box, my girlfriend is doing the same. It's come with the latest version of Tiger. Here's the thing: with iChat my girlfriend and i get the all-to-familiar Insufficient Bandwidth message when we try to connect. I can connect with another friend on a standard Macbook, and my girlfriend can connect with me on the PC at my work, but we cannot connect with each other.
We're both running off of Cable Modem router wifi and have bandwidth of at least 750 mbps. I've been through the support pages, opened port channels, adjusted quicktime streaming preferences, but to no avail. Any more ideas or any other tips to get this to work. Visual communication was the primary reason for the purchase of these computers, and we're frustrated to no end that it simply will not work after troubleshooting.
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

HI theBen,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
At the ned of the day this can come down to the way your individual modems do NAT when using Port Forwarding, Port Triggering or DMZ and just not talk to each other properly.
This is because there are about six different ways manufacturers use to achieve NAT.
UPnP can help avoid this problem.
See here for more info http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page15.html#CertainBuddy
The iChat error messages are not always clear as to the exact problem and as you guessed ports can also be part of the problem.

  • Processor Whine on the Newest MBPs (hate to beat a dead horse, but...)

I was curious as to whether the infamous CPU whine (which I experience extensively on my Blackbook) still exists on the newest MBPs (i.e., Santa Rosa). My Blackbook has featured no less than three of the major known (or "unknown" if you are Apple) issues--the whine, the screwed-up trackpad, and persistent difficulties awaking from sleep--and I need to find another option. I suspect that the whine is still there on Santa Rosa MBPs, but I figure that it may be drastically reduced. I also hear that the trackpad is much better on MBPs than on Macbooks. Thanks.

It is definitely the processor. I have had the exact same problem (as stated above) and I am sure that it is the processor (I know because I used a program to modulate the processor load with a slider and you could hear the noise change pitch until--finally--it went away). My hypothesis is that when the MagSafe adapter is plugged in, the computer switches over to a more high performance mode in which the computer uses more of the available resources, meaning that the processor has to do less work, and thus goes into an idle state more often. And yes, I think that frequency=intensity here. Another hypothesis might be that the adapter somehow amplifies the noise electromagnetically (this might make sense since the MagSafe both--obviously--conducts electricity and is secured by a magnet). At any rate, I didn't think that the noise was the processor at first, either, but as it turns out it is. And despite what others say, I think it's an Intel screw-up and not Apple, although Apple should take responsibility (more responsibility, that is). Indeed, I have had all sorts of problems with my Intel Macs, whereas I never, not once, had a problem my PPC Macs.

  • Don't want to beat a dead horse, but...

This is the "I can't get ARD to Observe or Control a computer, though I can see it's there, what application is running, and I can also send it messages." thing again.
I have seen thread's on this before, and it seems like a semi-common problem.
I have tried some new things and felt it would be good to at least document what I have tried and learned from it to see if I can bring some new light on the subject.
I have 9 computers varying from G4's through G5's and a Imac all running OSX(tiger) 10.4.11. I am using ARD 3.2 and all of the computers are running ARD client 3.2.1. We are also all on the same network and all have Apple Remote Desktop enabled with full privileges. All of these computers are accessible with Observe and Control accept 1 of the G5's. So here are some things I have tried on my 1 renegade Mac.
First I thought it was a port problem cause some of the other macs were having problems with VNC server being on the 5900 port, after I changed the VNC server to 5902 I was able to get those running fine. So in the terminal I ran a command I learned from the Tiger Discussion Board (thanks Camelot).
    # sudo lsof -i -P
This told me what ports are running and what is using them, the ones I am interested in are running on 5900 and 3283. On a computer that is working properly I find that port 5900 is being used by AppleVNCS and in some cases OSXvnc-se, and port 3283 is being used by ARDagent. Now on the mac in question I didn't see 3283 being used at all, so i figured my problem lied in getting ARDagent running. After talking to Apple Tech Support over the phone I was given a few ideas
    1. Disable Apple Remote Desktop in System Preferences, and then re-enabled it.
    2. Try logging on as a different user.
After realizing that I knew a little more about computers then the average Grandma (sorry grams) they were willing to give me a Terminal commands to try and provoke the service to run. As long as I understood that apple nether supports or condones the use of Terminal commands.
$ sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -activate -configure -access -on -restart -agent -privs -all
This effectively enabled port 3283 and ARDagent.
Alas in the end none of this worked, and the final solution seems to be having to reformat the G5. So I figured that instead of this being a big waste of time I would put this here in the hopes that this may help someone down the road.
    Thanks for Reading.
    Moderith

Glad you started this thread cos I was thinking along similar(ish) lines.
After reading all this psu stuff on here I dunno whether to pass my Thermaltake down the line to my wifes nforce2 setup and get something like a 480W Tagan TG480-U01. The Chieftec psu in her system only has 1 fan and I dont think that is helping her temps cos her Barton is running loads hotter (42C+) than my AMD 64 (30C). The thermaltake is probably just on the boundary in my setup. If it was wasnt for my wife's heat issue I would probably stick with my thermaltake for the Amd 64 system and run a second (cheapo 400w) psu above it using a relay switch that I got and then power all the fans and hdd coolers etc with that.
    What ya reckon guys?

  • Beating a dead horse: Access Time Capsule files w/ an internet browser $

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but I have spent 2 days and countless hours looking up how to access my TC using an internet browser. I've read about port fwding and dynamic vs. static IPs. I cannot figure this out. If someone could help me and actually get it to work, I would be willing to pay them a reward for there services thru paypal. I don't want to sign up for Mobile Me or pay for any monthly subscriptions. I just wanna be able to access my TC and it's files where ever I am using an internet browser. Here's what I've got:
MacBook 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Mac OS 10.6.4
Verizon Fios router model MI424WR-GEN2 w/ a dynamic IP
My TC is connected by ethernet to the Verizon router which enables me to use the WiFi on the TC
Do I have to sign into my Verizon router and change setting?
I'm pretty network illiterate so a good step-by-step would be great.
Thank so much to whoever can help me.

After all the setting have been put in, I'm getting an error that won't let me update the TC. It wants me to correct 2 problems. "The DHCP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your Airport wireless device. What's that?
This error message is due to the fact that the TC is performing as a router (its default) and not as a bridge (as it should be) because it is downstream of your Verizon-provided router.
I apologize as I just realized when I first responded to you, that I had assumed that the TC was the only router in your network configuration. As such I had provided you with instructions based on that assumption.
As such, at least two things need to change in the instructions that I provided: 1) The Verizon-supplied router is your main Internet router and it is the one that needs to be configured for Port Mapping/Forwarding, not the TC, and 2) The TC should be reconfigured as a bridge. (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)).
So I used the "with Time Capsule password", was that right?
    Yes, that would be correct.
    Here are the "adjusted" instructions:
AirPort Utility > Select the TC
o Note the value of the IP Address. This is the IP address of the TC that was assigned by the Verizon-supplied router. We are going to want to change this to a static IP address. For now, just note what IP address range it is in, i.e., 10.n.n.n or 192.168.n.n, etc.
Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection
o Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Manual Setup > Internet > TCP/IP
    o Configure IPv4 = Manually
o IP Address = select an IP address just outside of the range provided by your Verizon router. For example, if the router is supplying IP addresses in the range of 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.50, enter 192.168.0.51 here.
    o Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
o Router Address = This would be the LAN-side IP address of your Verizon router. Most likely it is 192.168.0.1
o DNS Servers = you would need to get these from your ISP, or just use the OpenDNS servers
o Domain Name = you can leave this blank
Manual Setup > Disks > Files Sharing tab
    o Enable file sharing (checked)
o Secure Shared Disks = With Time Capsule password
o AirPort Disks Guest Access = Not allowed
o Share disks over Ethernet WAN port (checked)
Manual Setup > AirPort > Base Station
o Enter a Base Station Password and verify it in the Verify Password box.
o When you have made all the changes, click Update.
Port Mapping instructions would be specific for your Verizon router. If you don't already, you may need to download a copy of the User Guide for this router in order to configure Port Mapping properly. The key is that the IP address for the port mapping would now be the private static IP address that you assigned to the TC. The Public & Private ports would be the same.

  • Request for Interpretation of insufficient bandwidth error

    To iChat Discussions:
I have looked at many of the messages posted concerning the "insufficient bandwidth" error that I am receiving from iChat. I have implemented all suggestions and I am still having trouble.
I am using a capable Quad G5 with an iSight camera. I have all updates installed with Mac OS X 10.4.6. I am using iChat 3.1.4 (v432).
I always get the "insufficient bandwidth" error message when I initiate a video chat with the outside world. I can text with all buddies.
I see the three test sites (appleu3test01,appleu3test02,appleu3test03) with green video cameras (multiple),as well the other contacts on my Buddly List.
I am connected to a university wireless system. I can transfer files up and down at about 6 Mbps, so there is no bandwidth problem. The IT experts say there are no ports blocked and that all is well. I have the Mac OS X firewall turned off. I can video chat perfectly with buddies inside my building, but when I try to go outside, I get the "insufficient bandwidth" error message.
Following a thread on the iChat Discussions, I captured an error log for iChat. I was hoping someone in the Discussions could interpret the log results so I could diagnose the problem with connecting from to the outside world. I annotated the log with some information about when I did what, starting the line with a /. I used the command
    /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7
from the command line in a Terminal session. The error log follows:
/ I started up iChat and everything came up normally
    13-21-96:~ westfall$ /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7

Quad G5 with iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Gary,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
I see that you seem to have done the Quicktime setting
094151.005637 Bandwidth based on QT prefs = 21474836
    094151.261284 BWD: GotBandwidth: 1618529/10814842 (up/down) @[35.13.21.96:255.255.252.0]
094151.261318 BWD bandwidth: 1618 kbits up, 10814 kbits down.
It is the IP listed here that worries me.
You say you are on a Wireless connection to the University's service but you are showing a Public IP (One I would expect to see as part of the info)
Has the Uni given you a direct outside line as it were ?
Are you saying you can use Bonjour but not the AIM side ?
Or do you mean that you can call out over the AIM side and get back to Buddies in your Building but not others ?
I am expecting you to tell us that the set up is like this:
Uni connection to the internet (Server or modem) <-> 1 or more routers <-> Wirless connection <-> Your computer
With a domsetic set up you would have a Public IP at the modem. This may or may not pass that IP to the next device. At this point there would be a LAN set of IPs issued to the subsequent devices and computers.
LAN IPs are in three groups of numbers
    192.168.xxx.xxx
    10.xxx.xxx.xxx
    172.(16-32).xxx.xxx (basically a subset within 172.xxx.xxx.xxx)
The IP you show here is not one of those.
It is possible that the Uni has decided to use there own choice of IP numbers for their LAN.
However I would still expect to see two IP's showing up for you. One Public and the IP your computer has on the LAN.
Can you tells what IP you see in System Preferences > Network > Connection method in second drop down and then TCP/IP tab ?
I am expecting this to be a NAT problem.
More info on how the Uni are routing you to the outside would be helpful.

  • Gamma issue... beating a dead horse

so so confused, about this gamma shift from After Effects to Final Cut. I rendered the same clip out 4 different times and each time it has different gamma. Here are my render settings:
    1. v210 Codec
    2. Quicktime Animation
    3. Apple FCP Uncompressed 8bit
    4. ProRez 422 HQ
The first 3 I thought were uncompressed or "slightly" compressed. The v210 codec looked like crap. The best was Animation & FCP Uncompressed... but again they look different. This is complete madness. And it did not matter if I selected use Legacy. Out of all our gear only Final Cut is gamma crazy... Can someone explain to me why such a difference in these clips. I know I'm beating a dead horse here. Thanks for any helpful tips or pointers

Mine is fluctuating. Mine worked without having the Match Legacy Gamma Adjustment on and then off then on. I did something which seemed to overwrite a setting and reset something. Not sure.
    Try this.
In project settings, Turn on the Blend Colors Using 1.0 Gamma.
Render something in the render que. My video suddenly got darker and the results were darker than normal.
I went back, checked it off, re-rendered it, and it worked out perfectly.

  • G3 os 10.3.9- question- beating a dead horse

i know i am beating a dead horse and this has probably been asked a million times.
    ibook g3- 500mhz os 10.3.9
i have always had pc's and i got the first iphone when they first came out, and had every once since, loved those **** phones.(really loving the iphone 4)
my question is this, i am looking for tips also
i recently came across a ibook g3 from a trade i made off craigslist.
the ibook looks great, almost new.
but i noticed that it surfs the net pretty fast but when i go to certain sites like worldstar or youtube it either cancels the browser or the video looks choppy and wont play smooth.
what web browser is best for my os and also what can i do to make the youtube videos work smoothly, i have a bunch of softwear on the ibook i want to delete if it is slowing down the computer, excell, word, entourage, ect.
mostly looking to just use the laptop for music, photos and surfing the web(facebook), and watching youtube video's
any tips or advise, remember i am new to the mac world(outside of iphones)''
thank you to all who answer,
p.s. i know i got a outdated and old laptop but i got a good deal on it, traded away 2 old verizon cell phones i had that where collecting dust

Hi, Paul. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Gerald's linked User Tip applies mostly to people working in Mac OS X 10.4.
Here is the applicable section for Mac OS X 10.3.9:
For any video URL on YouTube, add &fmt=5 to the end of the URL, and this will force videos to run in quarter VGA mode (320x240). The video quality will be degraded, but you should maintain a stable frame rate that is uninterrupted and capable of streaming without the need to pause and wait for the entire video to load.
Also, if you restart the iBook, and don't have any other applications running except for the browser you're using to watch the video. Firefox will probably be more successful than any other browser for watching YouTube. Also, as the User Tip hints, pausing the video while it's loading and waiting until it's fully loaded can help.
If the RAM has not been maximized with a 512 MB module in the one user-accessible RAM slot, that can help speed things up, too.
The iBook G3 500 MHz came out in 2001; YouTube didn't start up until 2005. So you may be able to understand from that information why the 500 MHz iBook has a hard time with YouTube videos.
    Good luck with it.

  • Insufficient Bandwidth Error

I'm trying to connect to a friend that has dial-up and no camera (I'm doing one-way video chat). I have the right settings and have done everything everyone/every help tutorial has told me to do and I still keep getting the insufficient bandwidth error. Is it my computer or can I just not connect because of her crappy internets?

If you try to connect to another user that doesn't meet the minimum bandwidth requriements (which dial-up does not meet), you will receive the "Insufficent Bandwidth" message.
If you are on broadband, and meet the minimum requirements, you can try testing your set-up with one of the testers listed here: http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.html

  • "insufficient bandwidth" error when seemingly all is OK

after months of flawless iChatAV sessions between me in Los Angeles and my brother in NYC, we recently started getting an error message that there is insufficient bandwidth to make the connection. Yet all tests (and even an in-house visit today from a Covad technician!) seem to indicate that we both have (and exceed) the bandwidth requirements per Apple's specs for maintining a 1-on-1 video chat. As far as I know no other settings have changed on either one of our respective systems or routers.
Oddly enough this started right after (if not actually during) Hurricane Katrina. We surmised - perhaps incorrectly - that this could be a result of increased loads in one area or ISPs systems due to damage in that area and/or bandwidth issues due to rerouted signals. (are we just nuts to even "go there?")

    Hello Theo,
I am still on, but your location(s) may be effected some, I suppose.
Were you having this problem before the Security Update 2005-008?
Because you had iChat AV working previously, my best suggestions for troubleshooting be the applicable suggestions in:

  • IChat w/ Linksys WRT54G- insufficient bandwidth error

    Hi,
I am having trouble doing a video chat with iChat AV 3.1.5. Everytime I try to connect to a friend (using the same version of iChat) I get an error stating there is insufficient bandwidth. I have a cable modem connected over a linksys router and I am pretty sure my bandwidth meets iChat's requirements.
So far I've disable my Mac OS's firewall, disabled the firewall on my router, enabled upnp, diasbled upnp and port forward the port range I am using for iChat. Nothing has worked.
Any help provided would be greatly appreciated. I am at a loss about what to try next.
    Thanks,
    Lauren

i can not offer you professional support, only a solution (one of many) that solved this particular issue!
i have the very same router, except i don't have the "security enabled" new one. i read and read possible solutions, i tried them all and only one of them worked for me.
** access the administrative page at 192.168.1.1 i believe and log in (default is "admin" and "admin")
go to access restrictions, then look at the "DMZ" menu
change those settings to allow all the ports to accept incomming and outgoing, this also exposes your router to possible attacks. i guess when your done, close those ports from the DMZ menu, use this in conjuction with the ports settings in access restrictions (port forwarding)
this is a very tedious technique, but then again, iChat has some very stupid connection issues. this way may not be the best but it worked for me. if some else has a more permanent solution, please do help the guy.

  • Insufficient bandwidth error help

Just in this last week I have been unable to video chat or audio chat because I keep getting the insufficient bandwidth message. Keep in mind that I had been doing both types of chats fine until this past week, even 4 way video was very clear. I have a 9Mbps connection and my friends have 100 Mbps fiber so bandwidth should not be an issue. Skype still works as normal though. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Is it possible that my ISP closed a port that iChat needs? In my firewall settings, I opened TCP 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298 and UDP 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5678, 16384-16403. Is there anything else I can try to get the video or audio chat working again? Anyone else have similar problems recently?
BTW, we are all using wired connections, so airport is not an issue here.

Alan..I am having the same problem. We are running a single user on both ends (10.4.4) with a G4 iBook on one end and either a G3 iBook or a G4 iMac on the other. It seems to work OK between the G3 and the G4 iMac but neither of us can do more than text/audio chat with the G4 iBook.
I wonder if there was a setting that was changed when we upgraded to 10.4.4?

  • Sorry to be kicking a dead horse, but...

I have read the posts on viewing todo lists through Mail, etc. I have also read the posts on using third-party applications.
I am thoroughly unsatisfied with Apple's inability or unwillingness (or combination of the two) to allow iCal todo list items to sync directly in to iCal on the iPhone. This is iRidiculous. We pay several hundred dollars for the device, and then an annual fee for .me accounts, and a simple operation, which is central to one's ability to organize using Apple products, is simply impossible?
Please do something. And by something I don't mean archiving discussions on this topic so that comments cannot be posted.

This is a user to user help forum only.
All threads here are archived automatically after 90 days from the first post date when there has been no activity. The threads and posts are still available with a search, but it accomplishes nothing to bring up some 90 day plus old thread which has had no activity for a long period of time. There is nothing preventing you or anyone else from starting a new thread here to kick a dead horse. Many here don't use the search function and post the same question that gets posted and answered on a regular basis over and over and over and over again.
These discussions are primarily for technical support issues and questions which are answered by fellow users only, not for just whining/ranting/complaining. Apple does not provide direct support or answer any questions here.
Not sure where the problem lies with syncing To Do's, but there must be an issue we are not privileged to. Syncing To Do's with iCal is one thing and probably more easily doable than with syncing To Do's or Tasks with Outlook at the same time.

  • Error -22 "insufficient bandwidth error" in iChat 10.4.7

    Hello,
Since upgrading to iChat 10.4.7. I have not been able to make reliable audio and video chats with people. I have read through previous posts here, and have done the combo update and permissions repair as recommended. I have also checked that I have all the recommended TCP and UDP ports open through the firewall.
Note that before upgrading to this version I had no problems whatsoever making video and audio chats.
I am using a wireless network linked to cable internet. I cannot chat at all now with anyone who has not upgraded to 10.4.7. With one friend who is also on a wireless network, I managed to initiate video chats only after we had both gone through the procedure of installing the 10.4.7 update, then the combo update on top, and repairing permissions.
However, with another friend, who has also gone through the update procedure described above, I cannot initiate audio or video chats, and I get the errors posted below. She is using a T1 ethernet network.
Both my friends and I are using G4 powerbooks.
    Can anyone please help?
Errors attached below - apologies for the length.
    Thanks!
    Hiranya

Powerbook 15" Hi Res 1.67 GHz 2 Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi Seleya,
This error tells you that the SIP part of iChat (the way it negociates the ports to be used plus ringing the other person) is active and attempting to connect.
From this we can tell that the other person aknowledged to call.
With regards to port this suggests that port 5678 is open as this is where Invites are sent and received.
As the next stage is the use of port 5060 we can presume this is open as well.
Now port 5060 then passes the connection to 4 ports from 16384-16403 for 1-1 chats.
This leaves the "why doesn't it work" part.
This could be that the ports 16384-16403 are not open.
It could be that the NAT (Port Forward) information being passed back and forth is not liked by the modems or routers involved.
There are about 6 types or forms of NAT and sometimes two modems just don't "play nicely"
Now you said this worked before the update. Apple did say they made some changes to iChat that were supposed to help connections from behind some sorts of firewalls (NAT in modems is a sort of Firewall) http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303771
If either of you are doing Port Forwarding make sure the full number ports are opened.
Consider moving to UPnP at one end at least.
At the moment I am not sure which way up to read the info in the error log. (The Binary Imgaes bit starts at the bottom with the items loaded first, with iChat and in your case iGlasses loaded last).
The reason I say this is there is a SIP "BYE" in the second section that would normally be the end of the chat. If the info is supposed to be read from the bottom up this could be significant. I am not sure what circumsatnces would send this closing instruction without the person at one end doing so manually.
Most of what I know about iChat has been learned through inference and experiment. These logs are a little too new to interpret further than this at present.

  • Sorry to beat a dead horse, iChat quits upon startup

I've read a few threads talking about reinstalling iChat with Tiger but haven't seen any clear instructions regarding Leopard. I have the same problems as others with iChat quitting upon opening it up. My G5 is currently using 10.5.2 and iChat is 4.0. If anyone has clear instructions on how to solve this problem I would greatly appreciate guidance/suggestions. I apologize in advance if this has been addressed in the past and I missed seeing the fixes.

    Here is the software overview
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.5.2 (9C7010)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 9.2.2
    Boot Volume: James HD
    Boot Mode: Normal
To confirm the version of iChat I am using I went to System Profilier> Software> Applications> iChat. This is what I found:
    iChat:
    Version: 4.0
    Last Modified: 2/6/08 10:14 AM
    Kind: Universal
Get Info String: 4.0, Copyright © 2002-2007 Apple Inc. All rights reserved. The Running Man logo is a trademark of America Online, Inc.
    Location: /Applications/iChat.app
Then I went to your link for the update, downloaded it then got a warning stating "HD does not meet minimum requirements"
I do not believe I have updated Time Machine or Airport. These are the current versions I am using. Again all info found in system profiler
    Time Machine:
    Version: 1.0
    Last Modified: 2/15/08 4:46 PM
    Kind: Universal
    Location: /Applications/Time Machine.app
    AirPort Base Station Agent:
    Version: 1.5
    Last Modified: 3/14/08 4:59 PM
    Kind: Universal
    Location: /System/Library/CoreServices/AirPort Base Station Agent.app
Thanks for the help. Hopefully this adds a few more clues to the problem.

  • Beating a dead horse...Need help with my Epson 2200

I realize there are many posts on this topic, but I'm still having problems with my Epson 2200/firewire (running on Tiger). I had to buy a new hard drive the other day, so I reinstalled Tiger. I can get the Printer Utility to recognize my 2200, but my option to print borderless is gone. Nothing I try works. I deleted the drivers and reinstalled them. I've tried the drivers that came with Tiger and those that are found on the Epson site. My R200 has the borderless option, but not the 2200. I had the borderless option before I installed the new HD, so I know I got it to work before. I just can't remember how.
If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it very much. I'm slowy going insane. Thanks!

I do seem to recall that there have been a lot of problems with printers with Firewire connections. As to you Epson 2200, I would agree that it appears the printer is not being recognized properly. I believe that Printer Setup Utility gets the printer identification from what is called the CUPS "backend". This is the software that normally acts as communications software between the printer and the computer -- at least during printer setup. The backends are located in an invisible directory. You can see them by using the Finder's "Go to Folder" command under the Go menu. In the box that appears enter --
    /usr/libexec/cups/backend
    and click "Go".
If you feel you must use the Firewire connection on this printer, you could try the following. There are no guarantees that it will solve your problem. You could try manually installing a new copy of the Firewire backend from your Tiger installation disk. You would need to use a program called Pacifist. The procedure would be to first locate the file on the Tiger disk at /System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg. Once you have made sure you found the file to install, then you could use the Finder to manually delete that file on your hard drive followed by using Pacifist to install a new copy of the file. I would then recommend restarting your computer. Hopefully the fresh file would see your printer correctly, but again there are no guarantees.
In looking for information on this printer I did find out that this printer normally appears as a SCSI device on Linux system. I found this on the Epson FAQ page. This would seem to indicate that it might not be a standard Firewire port. The standard suggestion that I kept running into was to use the USB port. It is generally felt that you would not loose much speed as the processing on the computer is CPU intensive enough to negate much of the Firewire speed.
I wish I could offer you a better solution. Perhaps others that have this printer have gotten it to work via Firewire and could offer more insight.
