Been away for awhile, whats new?

Hello everyone.
I have been away from ArchLinux for quite some time now and am now finally free to take it up again.
I'm just curious as to what has changed. What sort of new things are going on with Pacman? Any problems? Anything at all.
I noticed that the AUR system is now up and running. Looks pretty good too, I'll be sure to check it out. Hmm, what else... OH! The wiki is now nicely organized. I like what I see.
Anyway, if you can think of anything to add please feel free to post a reply. As for me I'm going to start backing things up on my system so that I can do a fresh install of Arch.
Thanks for your time.

It's all in [testing], if you'd like to see what we're up to. No guarantee that your system will be running 100% happily if you use the testing repo, but you can still see what's up...
libtool-slay is progressing. There are some oddball packages that won't compile due to no libtool, we're working through those.
gcc4 is annoying in that some older packages won't compile very happily
we've also got QT4 on the horizon, no ground broke there yet, this one is complicated and held back due to the above 2 projects as well as other issues
I may have missed something, or even misinformed you, I have to admit I've only been half with it lately because I've been busy like never before, but that should be the jist of what's going on.

• My macbook pro makes that ejecting noise when i open it but not every time usually when i ve been away for awhile then take it out of sleep it makes the noise is this normal?

Hi ive had my macbook pro for a week or so and when i open after its been in sleep mode for quite a while it will usually make that ejecting noise. It doesnt make the ejecting noise evreytime i open it just sometimes. Is this normal HELP

Yes, it's normal.
Apple released a firmware update a couple of years ago that was supposed to stop the drive from making that noise in certain models that were available then, but even the update didn't work all the time. The noise is completely harmless and not indicative of any problem. Just ignore it.

The process to update your Tom Tom is a big data file, you will need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network for it to download. If will take about an hour.

• All my title bars (very top of the page) show up in Chinese characters after I've been online for awhile. What is causing this? I've never activated anything in Chinese; this makes me nervous. Is this a virus? My virus scanner is not showing any problems.

I never have noticed this problem until about 2-3 weeks ago & it occurs after I've been online for awhile. When I click through my open tabs, each of them is written in distinctly different Chinese, as if it's translating what ordinarily would have been in English. I have been using Firefox on this computer for over a year, never have had this issue before and have never done anything to activate any translation function.

• I dropped my iphone (not from a great height) and now it won't turn on however when I plug it in the white apple shows on my screen. My lock button has been broken for awhile so I can't even try switch it on!

What can I do? I dropped my iphone (not from a great height) and now it won't turn on however when I plug it in the white apple shows on my screen. My lock button has been broken for awhile so I can't even try switch it on!

Once you have a proven, working Charger... Charge the Device for a couple of hours. Then try to turn it on.
If no joy...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
Release the Buttons...
If the issue persists...
Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
Be sure to make an appointment first...

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Hold Sleep and Home buttons for 10 seconds until your device restarts, so you will be able to use your device again. Finally, open Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup, and make a backup. The device will be backed up when it's plugged to the charger and connected to your network

Yes, look in Activity Monitor (Applications /Utilities /Activity Monitor.app) and see what it eating up all the %CPU. If anything is over 40%, post the name here to get advice or just kill it straight away with the red 'Quit' button.
If nothing is using up CPU resources, but the fans are going full blast, do an SMC reset. Read the instructions here:

The iPhone can shut down by itself when the battery is too low. Don't know if you have a malfunction that is running continuously and as such draining the battery ...or if you just have a warn out battery.

• I tried to update my macbook pro, the screen is now frozen. My track pad hasn't been working for awhile and my disc drive is broken. IS there anything that can be done without buying a new laptop. It was bought in 2009

My track pad has not been working properly for awhile and my disc drive it damaged. I went to update my macbook pro to maveric and it is now frozen and not allowing me to click anything. Is there anything that can be done to fix this without buying a new one? Its from early 2009

ShelbyMackenzieLynne,
when you say that your disc drive is damaged, do you mean your MacBook Pro’s hard disk drive, or do you mean its SuperDrive (the CD/DVD drive)?
When you’d updated your MacBook Pro to Mavericks, did the installation succeed, and subsequently freeze up? Or did it freeze up during the Mavericks installation?
Which version of OS X was installed on your MacBook Pro before you’d installed Mavericks?
Are you currently able to boot into the Mavericks recovery partition? To see if you can do so, hold down a Command key and the R key while starting up your MacBook Pro.

• Been away for 4 months- just come back and time machine wont back up

Ive just been traveling for 4 months and left my 1TB Time Machine @ home.
I just came back - plugged it in so that time machine could do a back up but, it says it can't, because it has been over 127 days - or something like that.
Now it says it need 521GB
My last backup was 458GB - only 63GB DIFFERENCE
It seems that it is now trying to write a whole new backup instead of adding to my previous ones.
Also I can't enter time machine and browse my old backups.
Please I don't want to have this problem every time i get home- why can;t i just plug it in and backup?

Yes, that can happen. See #D3 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Also I can't enter time machine and browse my old backups.
Most likely, TM deleted all but your most recent backup trying to make room for the new full one. But if you see no backups at all, try the Browse option in #E2 of the same Tip.

• My iMac won't wake up when it's been asleep for awhile

Each morning now, (since the last update of ML) my iMac won't wake up from sleep when I try from either
my bluetooth keyboard or mouse. Seems like it would be a bluetooth connection issue but how do
I make sure it will not interfer with waking up my computer.
I tried pushing the on/off button briefly to get it to wake up but no luck there. I always have to restart
it.

This sounds like the intermitent problem that has been around for a few users since some point during 10.6 Snow Leopard. I had the problem off and on and found the only 'fix' that worked 100% was to set: System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.

• After Firefox has been on for awhile, the Firefox tabs on the task bar disappear even though the pages are still running. I have to use Ctrl+Tab to fix it

I have started using Firefox recently. My computer is running XP. I notice that whether I have one Firefox window or multiple windows open, after awhile the Firefox tabs on the bottom task bar just disappear.
In order to get them back I have to use Ctrl+Tab to select each window one at a time and then they re-appear again on the task bar. Then after awhile they will disappear again.

Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
''(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)''
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item:

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode''
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.
Thank you.
