Beep on delete ?

All of a sudden today, I started getting a beep when deleting programs. It happens whether alerts are enabled or not. I don't even think the DVR reset itself. Is this something new, or am I the only one who never noticed this?

  • Can't delete a contact in Contacts. It only beeps when 'delete' is pressed.

Since setting my contacts to use iCloud to sync with my iPad2 Contacts won't let me delete any contact. When I press 'delete' (on the MacBook Pro) it just beeps at me. I tried turning off/on iCloud, but no change. I see "On My Mac" and "iCloud" contact groups with the same problem on both.

Same problem here. I have inactivated iCloud contacts, eliminated google contacts, and have only contacts associated with an Exchange account.  From Contacts on my macbook running Mavericks, whether I select one contact or select all, the option to delete is grey, and using the delete key results in a beep.
I can delete individual cards from iPhone contacts, however.  Exchange directory is also only available from iPhone.

  • Can't empty trash in iPhoto 9.1.1

At some point, probably since upgrading to iPhoto 9 ('11), I stopped being able to empty the iPhoto trash.
When I bring up the trash album, it shows the number of items in the trash (currently up to 2300), but there are no photos listed. Clicking Empty Trash from any of three places - inside the trash folder, by right-clicking on Trash, or under the "iPhoto" menu - all do nothing except generate a system beep.
Deleting new photos makes the number of items in the Trash increase, but it seems like iPhoto thinks there's nothing in the Trash.
I tried to figure out where iPhoto stores Trash info. The best I could find was /iPhoto Library/Database/Albums/trashAlbum.apalbum which is modified regularly, but that's a nearly empty file (only 4KB, whereas most other "albums" are larger).
I've tried all the different recovery options (Repair library, repair permissions, recover orphaned photos, etc) 3 or 4 times each, but no change.
Rebuilding my library from scratch isn't an option. I can't lose 7 years' worth of comments and things.
    Any ideas??

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Bluetooth ck-7w

Any help is good help. I have a mokia nk7w in a car i just bought. It seems to pair up ok. If i dial a call, the radio mutes and i hear a relay click. However, i cannot hear anything through the speakers, nor can anyone hear me at the other end. I have checked the phone and also tried another handset on the car. Same problem. Porsche boxter. Soemone has also installed a Denison ipod dock which plays through a preset on the radio so assume this is not a problem.
    Thanks

    Hi brodg
Firstly with ignition off press button for about 10 seconds until you hear beep, which deletes previous seven pairings stored in unit.
Secondly if that doesn't work due to unit "locking up" you may need to remove power plug from unit itself to reset it.

  • Since I installed on my Mac os10.6 to the latest version of Firefox I am getting error beeps when I try to type. It won't let me re-type or delete anything

I can type but if I make a mistake and want to retype or delete what I've typed it just beeps at me and won't allow me to type. I can use the cut and paste feature to fix things but what a complete hassle. How do I fix this annoying problem?

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

  • How do I delete HP_Tools partition & turn of beep on my DV7-6153ea?

    Hi Everyone,
I recently updated my bios with a HP update and a fourth partion called 'HP_Tools' has appeared on my new DV7-6153ea Windows 7 (sp1) laptop. My question is this... I don't want a fourth partition on my harddrive especially for 99mb. I'd like to completely remove this 99mb and partition - can I do this and how do I go about it?
Also, is there a way to turn the bios beep off when the laptop starts!!! It's so loud and disturbs people when I'm working!
    Sincerely, and with many thanks,
    Judd

I would personally recommend not to delete HP_TOOLS partition as its helpful during BIOS update process in case if you would like to do a rollback etc. Also HP_TOOLS partition is useful in running F2 (System Diagnostics) in case of any emergencies when required.
If you are still keen on deleting/removing it , Click start and type  "Disk Management "  without quotes and open Disk Management  window and right click HP_TOOLS partition and click Delete volume. This would also stop bios beep sound on the notebook.
I'm unsure how many times in a day you would restart your notebook where beep sound would annoy others but I'm very positive that you would hear that only once when you power ON the notebook.

  • System Beep when I try to delete

I'm using Aperture 3 and when I try to delete a photo with CMD+Delete the system beeps and the photo is not deleted. I have tried this with both referenced and managed files and get the same result. I'm able to delete the photo if I go to the menu and choose delete but prefer to use the keyboard shortcut.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • My iMac recently started making random beeping noises. They are all different pitches and lengths. Nothing like a notification. Also does it with the sound muted. I've deleted Skype (several people recommended that) and restarted & shutdown. Please help!

This has been going on for a few months and seems to be getting worse. At times it will be frequent, other times only a few random beeps an hour. Seems to be worse when something is loading or "thinking". I have a video of the beeping sounds I will upload when I get home as it won't let me do it here at work. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, it is driving me crazy! I'm also worried it will crash on me.

    Beeps on startup:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images.
5 beeps = processor is not usable

  • Delete a Photo from an iPhoto Folder?

This seems to be broken in iPhoto '11, v 9.4.2. I have a folder that combines different albums. While in the folder, I select a photo, press the delete key, get a dialog box asking if I want to delete photo from the album, press yes, get a beep sound, and nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong?

I sent the feedback. I gather you can't explain the dialog box and the failure for it to work. It is a bug. There's no good reason why it shouldn't work, and many why it should. Here's a good reason:
My uncle went on a trip with other people. They all provided him with their photos. He imported them to iPhoto in separate albums to keep things organized, and then combined the albums into one folder. Many of the photos were the same or very similar even though they were from different cameras. Some were better than others so he wanted to compare them and delete the lesser quality versions. It's simple and it should work, but it does not.

  • I deleted my extensions manager and now my Mac won't start up. Please Help!!

I have an IMac, 24" model, running OS X. For the past several days, little warning windows have been popping up with this annoying beep, telling me that my computer was infected with various viruses. 4, to be exact. Also, while on the internet, random pop-up windows have appeared, so I thought I did have a virus. So, to correct the matter (or attempt to), I deleted my preferences folder from the system folder, as well as the extensions manager.
Now, the computer won't start up past the white logo screen with the turning gear thingy. I've tried resetting the PRAM, and starting in safe mode, and safe mode with the progress screen, and even something there while holding the option key (that one gave me an icon of my HD, but clicking on it took me back to an endless wait on the white screen). I've tried starting from the disk that came with the computer (I held the C key) but not only doesn't the computer start from the disk, it spits the disk out. I don't understand. The computer was fine until I deleted the ext. mgr and preferences, so it can't be that the computer went bad or something.
I don't know what else to do here. I do have an extended service warranty with Best Buy, but I wanted to see if there was some way to fix this before hauling this thing off to the store. Any suggestions? I'm desperate here, because anything and everything I've tried (based on all the try-this and try-thats I found on the internet), nothing has worked.
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

Well done! You've succeeded in turning your Mac into a useless brick.
Deleting the System/Library/extensions folder and the associated manager removed most of the functionality from your OS.
And all to get rid of what sounds like the MacDefender trojan or a variant.
    ref; http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4650 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4651
You may have a slim chance of recovering if it will still boot in Target Disc Mode; in which case you can use another Mac to install the system remotely.
And I doubt your warranty with Best Buy is going to cover user "error."

  • Alert beeps and lots of "trust"

I have already noticed that many users complain here about alert beeps that can't be stopped. That's my complaint, also, but I don't have any of the 10 or 12 reasons that others have found that could cause the beeps. I can't see any pattern for the beeps. They happen with no Safari launched, no iOS device connected and when I am signed out of iCloud. I do not ever use any of the following:
    Nimbuzz
    FaceTime or other messenger app
    Messages
    Email notification
    Notifications for Safari
    Twitter
    FaceBook
To avert the occasional reader who loves to reply here with "So what's your question", my question is how to kill the alert beeps other than never use sound.
After the last incidence of an alert sound, I checked Console and noticed 123 entries that contain the word "trust" in less than 30 minutes. Is that about iPhone or just a coincidence (I do also have the perpetual "Trust" nag from connecting iPhone, even when I choose "Trust", but that just puts me in the huge crowd of iPhone users with that annoyance. Here is the System Log for a 28 minute period that had at least one alert sound around 3:50 p.m. (I'm not in your time zone)….

Please no reply from "Meg St._Clair" who will probably tell me to read the manual for Mac mini and OS 10.8.

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode - About

  • Macbook Pro (8,2 - early 2011) freezes/beeps. Safe mode OK.

My MBP (running 10.6.8) just his 3 yrs this month (so of course just out of applecare) and a couple days ago the laptop froze while I was using it and would beep 3 times continually. I was able to do a hard reboot and get back to my desktop but after about a minute it would happen again. I don't get a kernel error and my screen doesn't change - it just freezes.
[Full Disclosure] Not sure if it's associated, but a few minutes prior to this first freeze, I had problems coming out of sleep mode - laptop wasn't waking up, was unresponsive to keyboard, had to hit power button a few times to wake it up. But it did eventually wake without a reboot
I have 2 4GB modules, and they are confirmed correct for my computer, from OWC; they been in there for 3 yrs with no problems.
    I have done the following:
    1. Ran detailed Apple Hardware Test via DVD - no problems found
    2. Ran 2 other RAM tests - Rember and Memtest - no problem found
    3. Ran Disk Utility on drive - no problems found
    4. Reseated RAM modules  - still froze a minute after booting
    5. Swapped RAM modules - still froze a minute after booting
    6. Removed top module - seemed to work fine, used for 10-15 mins without problem
    7. Removed bottom module, put top module in bottom slot - seemed to work fine, used 10-15 mins without problem
    8. Tried each module separately in top slot - each time froze a minute after booting
At this point I figured the problem must be with top RAM slot and figured for now I could just run with RAM in bottom slot. Put one of the modules in the bottom, closed up laptop, booted up and it froze within 5 mins. At this point I had mixed up the modules so I dont remember which one I was currently working with. But based on my testing, the problem did not seem associated with the acutal modules.
I then just put both modules back in and did the following:
    1. Reset PRAM - still froze
    2. Reset SMC - still froze
    3. Removed font cache and removed all startup items - still froze
    4. Booted into safe mod  - NO PROBLEMS. Aside from what is automatically turned off in safe mode, everything worked fine and I worked with my laptop for a good while in safe mode without freezing.
So I'm not sure what to do next. I supposed I'll eventually need to make an appt at apple store but I'm thinking they'll want to replace the logic board which (1) may not be the solution  and/or (2) will be very expensive. The fact that it works in safe mode confuses me as it would seemingly point to a software issue - or is that not necessarily true? I haven't installed or changed any apps/extenstions/settings on my computer recently.
Hoping someone here can be my savior. Thanks!

I finally determine the problem to be google drive! Thank God I didn't spend money on repairs!
I realized I had never checked the crash log on my mac. I searched the web for the error code I received and found someone with a similar problem who said uninstalling google drive fixed the problem.
In safe mode (which always worked fine) I tried to connect google drive (it hadn't done it automatically because of safe mode) and immediately received the lock up and 3 beeps. this is not listed in the normal startup items so didn't even remember I had it running.
anway I managed to get it disconncted and deleted it and so far I have been fine!
Since then I have done some searches and found several threads with people have the same problem with the latest update to google drive!
    https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/drive/NVy9cxgkL_g
So hopefully someone else who has this problem sees this and doesn't spend hundreds of dollars replacing their ram, logic board etc.

  • IMac sometimes beeps endlessly after wakeup

I'm not very familiar with Mac computers, though I'm very experienced with Windows computers, so I might overlook or misunderstand things obvious to someone more familiar with Macs. I'm helping a less technically-oriented friend with her Mac. I'm not sure I have all the information that is needed, but let's try.
The computer is a fairly old one-piece iMac. The "About" choice under the Apple menu says it is an iMac 5,1 and SMC version (system) 1.8f2. The current OS is 10.6.8. I believe the original OS was one of the 10.4 versions. The computer originally used a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, both from Apple. Sometime after the upgrade from 10.4.x to 10.6.8, the wireless keyboard and mouse were replaced by a wired keyboard and mouse. There is an HP inkjet printer connected to the computer. The owner of the computer is not certain of the timing, but believes the beeping that is the subject of this post started after the switch to the wired keyboard and mouse, but she admits that it might have started before the switch. She is confident that it started sometime after upgrading to OS 10.6.8. She was told by the staff at an Apple Store that she needed to upgrade to OS 10.6 in order to use Skype, or some new version of Skype (I am not sure about that reason).
The problem is that, at times, the computer will emit one beep or a series of beeps (the owner sometimes calls them clicks, but I have heard them and would use the word "beep"). The owner has reported only one situation in which a single beep occurs.  Usually, it is a repeating series of beeps, each of the same duration (about half a second or maybe a little less, I'd say) and with a uniform interval between them, though I can't say whether the interval between the beeps is the same as the duration of each beep.
The beeping usually starts immediately after the computer wakes up from the sleep state (done by pressing a key on the keyboard). The owner usually puts the computer into the sleep state when she is done working for a while by selecting Sleep from the menu. I imagine it sometimes goes to sleep on its own due to exceeding the configured time of inactivity, but I have not asked her that. Sometimes the beeping does not start immediately after wakeup, but when a folder on the desktop is opened. When the computer is emitting a series of beeps, the beeps usually can be stopped by opening Safari and starting to type a URL. Typing the first letter of the URL stops the beeping. The owner is not sure whether starting any other program also can stop the beeping. If the beeping started when a folder was opened, usually closing the folder makes the beeping stop. The owner says that she thinks opening a folder containing Word files causes the beeping (though that does not trigger beeping all of the time), but most of her folders contain Word files, so I'm not sure it actually is necessary for there to be Word files in the folder to trigger the problem.
When the computer is emitting the series of beeps, the owner reports that the menus respond differently than normally. She says that, normally, when she clicks on a menu, it stays open while she makes her selection from it, but when the computer is beeping, she must hold the mouse button down while selecting her choice, else the menu will close.
The beeping does not start after every wakeup, but once it has started beeping after a wakeup, the beeping starts at all subsequent wakeups until the computer is shutdown. The owner does not know whether a restart rather than a shutdown also stops the beeping after wakeup. When beeping occurs after a wakeup and has been stopped by starting Safari, the owner believes that the computer does not resume beeping again until it has been put to sleep and is awakened again.
The owner has not had the computer start beeping right after being turned on, however, it sometimes does emit a single beep when the first letter of the user's password is entered into the logon dialog box. This single beep did not occur on a test of using the logon dialog after logging off without shutting down. (The owner does not usually log off, but I had her try it just as an experiment to see whether the single beep would occur when logging on in that situation.)
Possibly related is that there have been times when Word documents will not open. The owner mentioned that when this happens, if she hovers the pointer over the Word icon in the dock, she gets a choice to force quit. I believe she said that using the force quit restores normal operation of Word. There also has been at least one case in which Safari refused to close. I don't know how common this sort of stuck program is in a normally-operating Mac, and I don't know how often it occurs on this Mac.
When I was observing once, when I asked the owner to log off, the logon dialog box proceeded to shake rapidling left and right a small distance (perhaps a centimeter or so) while the computer emitted a series of beeps different from the other series of beeps I described. This series of beeps had two beeps in rapid succession, followed by a longer pause, two beeps in rapid succession, longer pause. This repeated until a key was pressed. The owner has seen that occur only that one time, but she does not normally logoff while leaving the computer running.
We have uninstalled and reinstalled Office (including all the updates to make it current). We have verified that Bluetooth is not enabled, that the old Bluetooth pairings have been deleted, and that the batteries have been removed from the wireless keyboard and mouse. We have reset the PRAM and the SMC. We have run the Apple Hardware Test and it found nothing to report. We have disconnected and reconnected all of the cables (keyboard, mouse, printer, ethernet). The problem of the endless beeping after wakeup sometimes still occurs.
I imagine the next logical thing to try is to reinstall Mac OS. The owner is a bit reluctant to try that. She does have copies of her personal files on CDs, but she is reluctant to undertake reinstalling the applications. Reinstalling the OS without erasing the hard disk probably would be less disruptive, but is there much chance that would eliminate the beeping?  My guess is that something in the software somewhere has gotten messed up, and a completely clean installation would be the only way to guarantee to clear it up. Am I discounting the chances that just reinstalling the OS could fix it?
My feeling is that this is a software problem, not a flaky piece of hardware, but is that justified? If it might be a hardware problem, which part of the hardware might it be?
At one point, I had an idea that there is some software remnant of the wireless keyboard or mouse software still active that sometimes causes fake input that triggers the beeping. However, I don't know enough about the Mac to know whether that is a reasonably likely possibility, and, if it is, I don't know what to do about it.
All suggestions for clearing up this beeping problem will be accepted gratefully.  Suggestions of other experiments to try also are welcome.
If we do decide to try a clean install of everything, should I first install the OS from the original discs that came with the computer, then upgrade using the OS 10.6 discs, or should I just start with the OS 10.6 discs?

    Hello, excellent work so far!
It doesn't sound like this much, but including for pondering...
The following table lists the new tones and their meaning:
    Tone(s)          Description
1 tone, a 5-second pause, repeat          No RAM installed
3 successive tones, a 5-second pause, 3 successive tones          RAM does not pass data integrity check
1 long tone when holding down the power button          Firmware upgrade in process. See About firmware updates for Intel-based Macs for more details.
3 long tones, 3 short tones, 3 long tones          Firmware restoration from CD in process. See About the Firmware Restoration CD (Intel-based Macs) for more details.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2538
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.
It sounds more like some Hardware issue at the moment, but only by a slight margin.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
