Before having my iMac repaired

My home iMac needs repair as the CD drive won't work anymore. I have a laptop that I use for work that I'll be using at home too until the iMac is repaired. I also have a large external drive where my iMac backs-up to with time machine. What is the best way to make sure I have access to important info I have on iCal and Address book and Mail? I want to make sure and not over-write info on the laptop I need for work. What other considerations are important before I take this computer in for repairs?

I would make at least one clone of the entire hard drive using something like carbon copy cloner or super duper.
If the laptop is a mac, you can boot straight into the clone and use it as if the laptop is the iMac, but bear in mind any changes you make won't be reflected on the iMac when it returns until you restore the iMac from the clone. If you prefer, if the laptop is a mac (always important to give all details here so we can help as best we can) then you can plug the external clone into the laptop and just read the files of it.

Programs like address book and iCal have information stored in most parts of the computer, and look for them in your main boot drive. So hypothetically, if you plugged in your external and read it just as a usb drive, and went to applications and opened address book, Address book will start looking for it's files that have the path of a boot drive, not your external which will have a path similar to Volumes/Drive Name/Applications/Address Book.
That is why booting from the clone would work better for this.
To boot from an external drive, hold down the option key just after you press the power button at start up.
If your laptop is not a mac, you will have to export your data from address book and iCal so windows ca read it and the same goes for mail unless you have web based mail such as MobileMe and gmail, in which case you can manage your mail from internet explorer or the like.
It is not advised to use Time machine with a partitioned drive and even less advised to partition the drive it is in the middle of using. Using a bootable clone will only work if the laptop is a mac, however it will not work at all if you have nowhere to clone your iMac to! If this is the case, I would suggest, Exporting your address book by opening up address book on the imac choosing file>export>address book archive. Open up iCal, choose file>backup iCal. Take these two files to the laptop, clearly named so they are identifiable as the iMac's files. Repeat these steps with the laptop and keep these files from the laptop safe somewhere, as these will be the only copies of your laptops Address book and iCal. Then open address book, choose file>import>address book archive and this will make your address book on your laptop the same as the imac. Open iCal, choose file>import and choose import an iCal file. This will make your iCal the same as your iMac. Make sure as to have safely backed up you laptops Address book and iCal before importing the iMac's files.
For mail, on the iMac, choose the mail box you want on the laptop, right click it and choose archive mailbox. Create a new folder for the mail box as there may be more than one file from the archive, in which case importing is much easier as you can just point the laptop t the folder. On the laptop, choose file>import mail box and choose Mail from Mac OS X. Locate the folder you have the files in and choose import. This will bring over all your emails from your iMac to your laptop. I have never tried this particular trick but imagine it will work just fine.
Hope this helps.

  • How do I safely retreive my harddrive contents before having MacBook Pro repaired?

I have a MacBook Pro model A1260 with a broken logicboard. How do I safely and inexpensively retreive my harddrive contents before having it repaired? I am also considering purchasing a used one and swapping out the harddrive. Thank you.

Thank you, I thought this as well but they told me they do need the hard drive because when they send it out they test it to be sure every part is working. Also the technician said that he was 'pretty sure' it was the logicboard based on his diagnostics however cannot be sure until it is repaired. The suggestion was to pay $100 to have my data transfered and it would not be done on site.

Frustratingly, since I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10, I too am having the worst problems with WiFi dropping out. I've never had this problem before on my iMac 27-inch mid 2011 model. Turning WiFi off and then back on again sometimes works. Help please. I've already tried a lot of your suggested fixes, but without success. Why hasn't Apple Fixed this?

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.
    Step 4
Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences and unlock the settings, if necessary. Select the Power Adapter  tab, if there is one. Uncheck the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    if it's checked.
    Step 5
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 6
    In the Wi-Fi settings, select
              Advanced... ▹ TCP/IP ▹ Configure IPv6: Link-local
    Click OK and then Apply.
    Step 7
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 8
    Reset the PRAM.
    Step 9
Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    Step 10
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

Your post is pretty lengthy and I have to admit I didn't read it all. Please try restarting in Safe Mode, if that doesn't work please do both a SMC and PRAM reset. These may take 2-3 attempts.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

Sorry, there is nothing you can do.
FYI: Damage like that is not covered by warranty, & all Apple will offer you is an out of warranty replacement...cost, in the US, for an iPhone 4, is US $149.

I do not know how to do this with an Apple TV (I don't have one), but as far as I know Apple TV only does mirroring.
If you have an HDMI cable long enough to reach your TV from where you sit, then it's easy. The TV could be set up in Extended Desktop mode (mirroring off) as if it was simply another computer monitor, and then you could just drag windows to it. If you have the Displays icon in your menu bar, that's where the setting is, or if the icon is not there, then the setting is in the Displays system preference. But again, that's for conventionally connected monitors, not Apple TV. If you don't have an HDMI cable and wanted a long one that's affordable you can get those at monoprice.com.
The answer we are still waiting for is if anyone knows if Apple TV can be used in extended desktop (non-mirroring) mode.

You can't.  If there was a way to get into the phone and backup data without a passcode, what would be the purpose of the passcode?
Either think harder, or prepare to lose all your data.

  • I just bought my iMac 2 days before the new iMac was launched. Is that possible that I can replace it with the new one?

I just bought my iMac 2 days before the new iMac was launched.
Is that possible that I can replace it with the new one?

You can return a computer within 14 days of purchase for a refund.
http://www.apple.com/legal/sales_policies/retail_us.html - Returns in the USA:  iPhones within 30 days, other items within 14 days.
Do you really mean an iMac2?  If you do you're about 10 years too late in wanting to return it.  I guess if you do have an iMac2 then it makes sense you posted on the iMac(PPC) forum since this one is for models at least 6 years old.
