Before I buy 5G iPod... questions...

Hi. I've got a few questions based on things I've read from various posts.
1) Is the battery replaceable?
2) I read this: "The real problem is iTunes. It won't let you copy your own songs to your own computer. Plug in your iPod and iTunes will ERASE all the songs you didn't get from it." Is that true??????? or how do you prevent that?
3) There seems to be so many bugs in the 5G should I wait for the new one if it is coming soon?
4) Black vs. white: Black is so great looking but people say it gets scratched even with special care, that the white looks better. a) Does the white in time turn yellowish, cuz so many white plastics do yellow. b) Do you people who have black ones wish you got a white now? and c) if it is not carried all over and basically just sits on a desk or somthing will it really get that scratched?
5) The 30 vs. 60: My songs are AAC 192. I only have about 8G so far and can grow into either one, but I don't want to have to be removing stuff down the road to make room for new stuff. Or maybe by then I'd want a new iPod anyway. (?) Or, I may not even come close to reaching 60G capacity, etc. It's like I'm trying to invision the future beforehand, I guess, because these things are not cheap. Anyhow these are the thoughts that go on for making my decision. For you people who bought the 30 or 60, what are your feelings now, like would you rather have gotten the other one, etc.
Thanks!

[Officially you should not download music off your pod onto your computer. This doesn't mean you can't!Yamipod and senuti are freeware downloads which will enable you to do this. iTunes would delete(update the iPod)any files not in it's library on the PC/Mac if you have it set to "Auto sync" in iPod preferences. This can be disabled by setting it to "manually update".]
I'm not concerned with uploading to the computer or bypassing anything. I guess I saw the word "delete" and wanted to double check going from the computer to the iPod. I only have songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store and from my owned CDs and I didn't want them to be erased accidentally when I plug in my iPod and lose all that effort. I don't have any illegal downloads. (I'm opposed to them, in fact. I feel people have a right to be paid for their work.)
3)We do not speculate about forthcoming attractions
I wasn't, don't worry! It's just that in life and technology, there's always more to come and reassessment of your situation, so I'm trying to assess my future needs with this choice because it is a big purchase and I'd like to have it for a good while. I don't want to buy the 30 then realize I should've got the 60, things like that.

  • Before I buy an ipod

I want to buy and ipod but I hear conflicting stories. some people say you can download your own music others say you have to buy it from i tunes??? some one help. (I want an ipod shuffle)

Just a slight correction to what Matt told you. Encrypted Windows audio will not directly load on an iPod--but you can burn these tracks to a CD and import them into iTunes. You'll be able to sync them to your iPod this way. In fact any music purchased from another source besides the iTunes Store will probably need to be burned to an audio CD and imported into iTunes. Most music purchased online is copy-protected and the only way to make the music usable by other digital players is to burn it to an audio CD and then re-digitize it.
P.S.--I have the new 2 gen. shuffle and I love it! It is very easy to use and quite portable.

  • Questions before I buy an iPod Touch

I have a few questions to ask before I purchase a Touch. I have wireless internet in my home (not WiFi). Will the internet feature work with wireless internet that isn't Wifi. Also, when you are on the internet, can you type in a search query in a search bar? Do web pages appear as they do on a PC? Also, can you access web based email like yahoo? thanks

Which means you have WiFi and the Touch will work in your home.
Be aware also that on March 6th Apple is having a press conference announcing the methodology for adding officially sanctioned 3rd party software for the iPhone/Touch, and when the Software Development Kit will be available. It is possible (but nothing has been announced) that there could be a Flash plugin sometime after that.

  • Before We Buy - HELP AND QUESTIONS

    Hello all,
I am in a tight spot at my office with my boss who knows absolutely NOTHING about Macs let alone how large the files we work on are from day to day. To make a long story short he is bent on us backing up to the network servers nightly. His belief is that if something happens we could magically go to any office and plug a machine in and have access to all our files needed to start working again.
I have TRIED my best to explain that is simply CAN NOT HAPPEN the same way a little ole PC office worker does. They work on super small Word files directly off of a server. They can sit down and login to any PC with a network connection then call up the little help desk and they click a few buttons and BOOM they are back to working.
IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY FOR US. Not because we are on Macs but because the nature of what we do ON the Mac. I can't even imagine trying to connect to a server and work on a file that is upwards of 1.5 gig!
If anyone is out there who could help me get this point across that would be SO helpful. I am at an utter loss as to what to do. I can't make any one here understand that we just don't and can't work the same way. I don't even know where to start to offer an option. They (being our IT people) don't ever want to work with us anyway.
Anyway I'm just frustrated. If any one has run into this where you work and could offer a solution or ANYWAY it would be helpful!
    Thanks
    Jenny

    Dave,
Thanks for replying and I'm happy to answer you questions!
First let me explain the current backup solution but first understand we have always been "outcast" because we are 6 Macs in a PC world over well over 4,000. In fact at times it was so bad that we had to use the web version of our companies mail because no one could or would offer any support for us. But slowly I've managed to work these issues out by simply trail and error on our own part.
Okay so back to your questions...
    CURRENT BACKUP SOLUTION:
Each designer has 4 folders on a second HD within their machine - Completed, Working, Resources and Personal.
The Completed folder is for projects that have been closed and are ready for completion and archiving.
The Working folder is for projects currently active.
The Resources folder is for files such as our company logos, fonts, forms, reference files, downloads for projects, etc.
The Personal folder is anything you might need or house on your computer that is NOT part of project (ex: Year End Employee Review). Basically this folder is considered off limits to any but the user.
    NOW...
The COMPLETED folder gets backup to DVD and cataloged then stored in a cabinet by year/month. Then the contents are archived on a network server by year/user (ex: 2008>JENNY>PROJECT CODE.....etc). This scheme works okay because it means that we have those completed projects in two locations - one offsite and one on disk. The issue here is two fold firstly the user (designers) must take part in backing up their files and archiving per our guidelines.
    OKAY...
Here's the issue I've got. I have yet to find a GOOD SOLID solution to back up the 3 (not the Personal although I wouldn't care).
I've tried Syncronize Pro, Carbon Copy Cloner, Retrospect, etc. For some reason there is ALWAYS an issue. Either I can't get it connect properly to our network so it hangs up overnight and nothing is backed or it just has too many options and never works simply across the 6 computers.
    MY CURRENT TRIALS...
First, I've been using CCC to create a disk image of my entire second HD each morning my computer starts at 7:30am. By the time I get into work its backed up my files from the previous day. This works fine.
Second, I'm using Syncronize from our Share Mac to mount my machine and grab that single disk image and place into a backup folder. I've had to do this after I get into work to make sure it doesn't time out and not mount my machine properly.
Finally, MANUALLY I take the disk images Syncronize has collected and put them on the server. I can't use CCC or Retrospect because I don't have ANY access to the server side. Syncronize works about 50% of the time over the network but it will error out over some of the files (I DON'T KNOW WHY!).
This all works OK but just OK. It's still cumbersome!
I guess my biggest issue is getting IT to help us with the server side issues (mostly give us more space - they are CONSTANTLY moving our files around on us) and more times then not a file we pull down from the server loses its brain...so it has to be manually opened and resaved or it doesn't work (that's a whole other issue).
My other biggest issue is getting my boss to understand that no matter WHAT I do, in the event of a disaster these 6 Mac people can't go buy a new machine, sit down in front of it, mount a server from within the network, and work as if nothing happened. It would take days if not weeks to recover and rebuild.
Here's where this is coming from. A few years ago the building lost all power due to an ice storm. 2 days into it we finally got access to go up our offices and get our machines. Then each person took it home and worked there. HOWEVER, all the PC people just went to different location with VPN access or worked from another branch (we're a bank). All was lovely and seemless for them.
Anyway. I don't know I just get frustrated some days with the attitude of like... well WHY... you know just do it... just push that button and make it work!
    Thanks again!

  • Before we buy, a few questions...

Right now my organization currently uses Microsoft Producer and Articulate for our eLearning needs. Well, suffice to say, MS Producer just isn't cutting it anymore. We need the ability to do the same things Articulate does when we output for Video On Demand.
Here is our current workflow with questions:
Record videos and edit in Final Cut Pro, then cut up each video per each slide for Articulate, then squeeze them to .swf with Sorenson. We would like to just export one large video file to sync the pops/animations to just like in MS Producer, but I'm not seeing a way to import Powerpoint animations and sync them to the timing of a video into Captivate 5 or 6?
In Articulate, sometimes we hide the TOC/Presenter video and window/sidebar completely to go full screen, then switch back to a view that has the TOC and Stage showing. Say I imported a 30 minute video and wanted to switch the TOC/Presenter window to the Stage, but only for certain slides, is there advanced scripting to do that? I found a way to just hide the TOC/presenter video, but not the TOC itself.
Finally, we need a way to incorporate 508 compliant EWD versions of the presentation and closed captioning into the Video On Demand. Right now we use .smi files for closed captioning, but have created .stl files in the past for our DVD presentations.
    Thanks for your help

  • Before I buy a Macbook questions...

    Hello,
I am tired of my PC crashing. My 3 year waranty is out. Macs don't get viruses like PC's right? Do they still crash?
I would be downloading, saving and burning, videos and music. Do I need to upgrade the hard drive from 80 GB to 120 GB? What about the amount of Ram? I would also be using Microsoft Office for school.
I was thinking as accessories I was going to get one of those red zip up cases and one of those keyboard silicone protectors. I am also looking into one of those iskins.
While I was researching this, I found an article saying that the second generation Macbooks no longer have the heating problem. Is this true?
Also does anyone have video or pictures they have taken with their isight camera so I can see the quality?
    Thanks.
    Amy

    Hi Amy,
Macs are not immune from crashing, but it is rare. I have a Macbook (since end of November), which I am loving, but it is slightly more prone to crashing than my old iBook, in that it has twice refused to wake from sleep (but this is out of hundreds of wake-from-sleeps, as during the day I don't shut it down, I just close the lid. It flawlessly wakes immediately on opening the lid 99.9% of the time, but with the iBook that was 100%). The operating system has once frozen during use, the second day I had it, no problem since. Generally on Macs if a programme does freeze it is only the progamme that crashes, not the whole system, so you can force quit that programme then reopen it (this has happened, 2 or 3 times).
No problems with viruses etc, though there is always the threat in the future...
I have 1 GB of RAM and it works fine, but I think this is the minimum: 1/2 GB is too small. I use Microsoft Office and it runs very well. The first Office programme I launch after switching on there is a slight delay - takes about 15 seconds to start sometimes, as it is still running through Rosetta, this will improve when they give us the new edition of Office for Mac later this year, as that will be written for the new Intel processors. After that documents and any other Office progammes starting is lightening fast. I did get 120 GB hard drive as I've run out of hard drive space on previous computers.
I don't have a keyboard protector. A sleeve seems sensible, and there are quite a few available for different styles. The one I use is from this site:
    http://wrappers.typepad.com/ipod/applemacbook_linensleeves/index.html
but they are an English firm so that may not suit you.
I haven't had any heat problems with the Macbook. I only occasionally use it on my lap, when I do for a while it gets quite warm, but never so much I've been uncomfortable. I've never used it for more than about 1/2 hour on my lap. I've been using it for about 3/4 hour now and I've just felt underneath and its only warm.
I don't know how to show you pictures. I find the camera pretty good, clear and sharp, with all sorts of daft special effects built in if you fancy.
    Hope that helps,
    Bob

  • Mac Air and Apple TV, before I buy question

    Hello,
This is a before I buy Apple TV question.
    1. Can I control iTunes and movies in my Mac Air to view on my Samsung TV which will have Apple TV connected to it? In other words, I want to sometimes be able to "DJ" my music or launch movies directly out of the Mac Air (I just want to know if I can do it)
    2. When using Apple TV via its remote  on my Samsung TV, can Apple TV see my iTunes Match/cloud and play it? (on the Samsung TV) Or does Apple TV only play music or movies stored in my Mac Air?
    Thank you
    S

    1. You can always mirror your mac on your TV using AirPlay (sound and video).
You can also directly use you Apple TV to play music stored on your mac.
Both solutions works. I personnaly prefer to stream music and movies from my Ipad/mac to my Apple TV, I do it all the time.
    2. Hum, I dont use itunes match, I couldnt tell.

  • I have a question before I buy Final Cut Studio 2...

I plan on buying Final Cut Studio 2 tomorrow, but before I buy it, I have a question. If something were to happen to my MacBook Pro, can I just install it on another computer? It might be a stupid question but I just want to be sure before I drive to the Apple Store.
    Thanks!

As long as the computer meets the minimum specification you can install it on any computer.
Physically you can install it on thousands of computers but Apple wouldn't be too pleased !
However, you are legally allowed to have it simultaneously on one laptop and one desktop that are owned by you.
So whenever you want you can take it off one computer and put it on another.

  • Orlando (or central fl) iPhone users.... question before I buy:

Been with att/cingular/att for years. First cell phone (motorola) I ever got, dropped calls all of the time and signal strength was poor. 2nd phone (an LG, my current one) never drops a call, good signal strength, but only rings about 50% of the time. So, before I buy the iphone, despite glitches and volume issues, do the folks from O-Town have positivie experiences with
    - signal strength
    - confidence the phone will actually ring when receiving a call
    - any dropped calls?
    - any other "service" related issues you can think of?
...and to really narrow it down, I'm on the theme park side of town.
    Thanks

Thanks guys (and gals) for the information. I guess I'll pick one up next week.
I thought about creating this thread the other day when I pulled up next to a 20'ish guy in a gray compact who had an iphone. I wanted to flag him down and ask questions, but that would have been odd.
And yes, when I lived in celebration (phase 1), I recall reception being spotty at times. And the theme parks... good grief...it seems the most random places vary between signal no signal.
Again, thanks. I'll be in the Orlando iphone club soon enough.

  • Things to know before I buy a new iPod?

I've been wanting to buy an iPod touch 32GB 3rd gen lately and been looking to buy one used on ebay since I'm short on money and I'll get one sooner or later, but as I've been reading on these forums, I have noticed there's been a bunch of problems with the new OS version 3.1.3.
Wifi is the biggest single thing on this for me and this is where most of the problems I've read have been so tell me, should I wait out on buying one or is there a way to download to downgrade to 3.1.2 or avoid having to update it.
I have iTunes latest version on my PC if that matters at all.

" I have noticed there's been a bunch of problems with the new OS version 3.1.3."
Most people never have a problem. We have never had a problem nor do we know anyone (personally) that has.
This is a support forum. People come here because they have a problem. If you go to the hospital, you will see a lot of sick people. That does not mean that most people are sick.
People complain on these forums after each and every upgrade.
There is no legit way to downgrade.

  • Buying an iPod before the holiday season.  Advise wanted.

So. I really want to buy an iPod for my car/work/personal life. I used to own one but it was stolen... long story.
The one thing holding me back from buying an ipod now is weather or not a new ipod will be coming out in about 1-2 months here.
Similar thing happened to me last year when I bought a Powerbook G4 late nov./early dec. Then jan/feb roll around and there is new everything! macbook pros and intels everywhere. Lucky for me I got a defective Powerbook and was able to have it refunded and got myself a macbook pro.
So I need advise weather to hold off, and buy an ipod when a newer/better one comes out or just get one now? maybe just get a cheap nano, and buy a better one when it comes out?

This is always the case with computers and hardware - the minute you buy it, it is obsolete.
My fiancee bought a new PowerBook and then they brought out the Intel-based chipsets within a similar timeframe.
However, it is not such a problem for us as we need to run Classic applications for Chemistry and Intel-based Macs won't run classic as they have an emulator for PowerPC chipsets (you can't run an emulator in an emulator, it's suicide)!
Go for the purchase now, unless you wish to hold out for the January sales in wake of the holiday period.
Thinking of what will be developed next, I am sure that Apple will be thinking of more ways to develop iPods to out-shine Microsoft's Zune.

  • Why is it that i am unable to buy an ipod nano 16gb in germany? In the stores it is advertised however not available, the store only has the 8gb and I can't ship it here? Is it a case of not yet launched, patent infringement or apple just being annoying?

I am trying, thus far with no success, to buy an ipod nano 16gb here in Germany. However whilst the stores advertise it they don't have it in stock and can't tell when it will be. The german apple store only has the 8gb version. Should i try to order from a reseller then they will only post within the uk.  iSo my question is - whats going on? Why are there no 16gb ipods to be (apparantly) had in Germany? Not launched yet? Patent infringement? Apple being very annoying?

Call Apple or an Apple Store in your city and ask them.  Or do a Google search.

  • Considering Buying an ipod

I am considering buying an ipod and have a few questions.
I have a PC with Windows XP Home Edition (SP2).
    First:
The laptop I am using is just too old to come with USB 2.0. Is it possible to use and ipod (all functions) when connected to USB 1.0? I own a PC card the gives me two USB 2.0 ports, but it is not available to me at the time but will be in a few months. I don't mind starting transfers and letting them run over night. All my music is on an external hard drive (USB 2.0) and I have access to a computer with USB 2.0 but the computer stinks and is very slow (kind of ironic). Worst case I buy a new PC card for my laptop and in a few months will have 2 (sell one on E-bay).
    Second:
Should I buy the Apple Care? Personally if I was running a business I would stand behind my product for at least 2 years without charging extra, but that is me and that philosophy makes me not want to buy it. Statistically speaking, should I. (I know there is no definite answer for this, personal stories would be ok)
    Third:
I have been debating on whether to get an ipod (20GB) or a Creative Zen Micro (5GB). $/GB is better for the ipod but the Zen micro has an FM tuner and voice recorder and is cheaper. Is there anything that could seal the deal, really make me want an ipod?
    Thanks for any help.

I was about to suggest you dump USB2 altogether and use Firewire instead, but the fact that you have an USB2 external hard drive may cause a problem. It is possible to use an iPod with USB 1.1, but it will be quite slow even when it works.
As for the choice between an iPod and a Zen, I would say an iPod is the obvious choice as it is much easier to use and iTunes is way better than other music management programs in my opinion. Also, do you really need a FM tuner and voice recording functions? Consider carefully as only you can answer this yourself. I know I don't need them.
