Before I Buy the MPEG-2 Component

Hi,
Before I buy the MPEG-2 Component for Quicktime, I want to make sure it is the right thing to do. I'd hate to make a purchase and not have it solve my problem.
Here's my specs:
QuickTime Player 7.5.0
Mac OS X 10.3.9
Mac iBook 466 MHz PowerPC G3 - A Graphite Clamshell (vintage and I love it!)
576 MB SDRAM
Sony DCR-SX40 4GB Handycam Camcorder
It is my understanding that if I download:
MPEG-2 Component (a purchase)
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/extending/components.html
MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2 (free)
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
Then I should be able to watch and edit videos from my new Handycam in QuickTime.
Is this correct?
Or is there something else that I need to be doing?
Thank you!

Here's the page you may be referring to: http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A
It lists the specs which are way beyond my computer.
Recommended System Requirements:
* QuickTime 7.6 or later (Pro not required)
* PowerPC G4 (500MHz or faster) or Intel processor
* At least 256MB of RAM
* Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later
I read all of the reviews and there were folks who had the same specs I do that it works for, but the date of their reviews were from a few years ago, so they must have had a previous version of the Component.
It also mentions underneath the system specs about OS 9 and using OS 9's Component, though it doesn't provide a link.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get an older version of the Component? One that will match my specs.
QuickTime Player 7.5.0
Mac iBook 466 MHz PowerPC G3 - A Graphite Clamshell (vintage and I love it!)

Mac OS X 10.3.9

Thanks!

  • The mpeg-2 component

    _the intro:_
I'm a little lost with the mpeg component that Apple sell as an add-on for a hefty £15
And a little annoyed with iMovie and iDVD as they don't seem to be compatible with THE main video files (the whole .mpeg / .mpg family).
I've downloaded the mpeg Streamclip software and it converts some .mpg files but not all of them (I don't understand the difference between these files, they're all from a handycam....).
    _the question:_
if I spend £15 on this mpeg add-on will that mean I'll be able to drag and drop files or import them to iDVD and iMovie? or will I still need to convert them to .mp4??

well, the easy way for me would be to use my camera, then take the memory card out and feed it into the laptop (whether mac or windows) and work off that.
Hooking the whole device by usb onto the laptop seems to me like the difficult/old/long way round way to do this... but it's ok, I understand this is the Mac way, not really complaining just commenting... For me at least, there's a point for windows in that aspect. And I have closed the door on windows so this means something admitting it !!

  • Can't get the mpeg playback component ($20) to actually download

I have read hundreds of ways on how to change MPEG2 to dv in order to edit on my mac and come to the conclusion I was going to have to buy this add on and then download Streamclip. Evidently the component did not download right or at least like all my other downloads have. The dmg icon is on my desktop but when I click it all it wants to do is download again and restart my computer. What am I doing wrong. I just have to get all this movie editing figured out and thought this would be my solution. Sorry I am not very technical and would love some help. After 20 years dealing with windows I just love my Mac even with all little downfalls it is actually more dependable at least until now.

The dmg icon is on my desktop but when I click it all it wants to do is download again and restart my computer.First make sure you have the correct file -- "QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg". If correct, I would then "file info" the icon (i.e., open the "get File Info" window) to make sure "DiskImageMounter" is set as the "Open with" application. If correct and the image file still won't mount a window containing two folders ("For QuickTime 6.3" and "For QuickTime 6.4 and later & Intel Macs" then you can hope it is only a corrupted download. In this case, sign on to the Apple account under which you made the purchase, go to the software purchases area, and download the file again.

  • Questions before i buy the E6

    Hi there!
I am looking for a QWERTY phone to replace my old Nokia E5-00. i suppose the natural successor to the phone is the E6 but i have some reservations on the phone and issues i would like to ask/discuss here:
    1. Notification Light
I have heard that when it lights it is almost impossible and very difficult to see as it is apparently a design flaw. is Nokia aware of this or has it done something about it?
    2. Email & SNS Notifications
Again based on what i read there is no "central"  or unified source of email & SNS notifications and updates. to check your eamil you have to go to a separate app. to check your facebook or Twitter feeds you have to do the same thing. is this true?
    3.  Camera
Why only fixed focus? and why no buolt-in image stabilisation or auto-sharpness? is there an update available to actually make the camera as auto-focus? or to make pictures actually clearer or sharper?
    4. Battery Life
I had the E5 for more than a year and it has so far the most amazing battery life of ANY phone i had.  i heard the E6's battery life sucks and isn't as good as expected. is Nokia aware of this? i thought you guys make phones that have an excellent battery life?
I think so far this are the worse culprits even apparently after the Symbian Belle update.
This has started to put me off.
can someone convince me that 1. Nokia is aware of these problems and 2. that an update is avaialble or is being developed to counteract these problems and 3. that i should buy this phone (rather than a Blackberry phone)
    Thanks.

    typothecary
There is no problem re-assigning hardware buttons. I have actually sms insted of email just as you want.
I my opinion Belle is by far superior to Anna regarding speed and stability, especially the email client and multitasking is almost perfect now.
Furthermore, connecticity over 3G and WLAN is excellent and audio sound also.
Handling voice calls is handled with brilliance..In short, indeed Nokia E6 is a very compentent business phone cause it is relieable and fast enough. Never restarts and no more full memory ever...Symbian has matured finally with Belle at least for E6. Nokia 701 is even better but for less buck...
Mentioniing the widget (adjusting screen icons and so on) problems I have found my solution in the meanwhile when Nokia w0rking this out. I just leave some screen shots (perhaps some other people can get their own ideas how to manage their screens).
My E6 feels well structured and I am happy with it. I just wish another E6 would be released with 2,9 inch screen and and almost the same size overall. Would be nice for better web-browsing experience...
Btw, I use font magnifier on 135% font size and use Opera Mobile for better experience in webbrowsing and clarity and less impact on my eyes due to the problem of high resolution.
E6 is excellent for the right people but I prefer overall the Nokia 701 Belle actually but then there is no qwerty (but other stuff though)
Nokia 808 again (delight Belle), Nokia E7 and X7 ( again, all on Delight Belle...after some time on Nokia Lumia 925 (retired), 1020 (not that great)and Lumia 820 (Replaced my router at home, great for internet sharing).., N9 The best device ever (use it as much as Lumia 1020), Nokia 700 (Sport Phone/My Love :-) ) Nokia 701, Nokia E6 (Should have a follow-up from Nokia among with larger screen, NFC, Autofocus), Lumia 800 (Retired After 6 weeks), -Sports Tracker-Nokia Internet Radio-Handy Safe-Skype-Bambuser-Screenshot app pro-fMobi-ComingNext-Manual TaskSwitcher-jagiTimer-Easy StopWatch-Boldbeast-Equalizer-Financial Calculator-WiMP Music-YTasks-Davi-Thumbnail Folders-BizCalendar-Tiny7-Situations-nn reeder-Sport Timer-CameraLover-CameraPro-GrabRadio-LiveScore-Poddi-Gravity-SkyFilesPro

  • A few questions before I buy the 13" air.

I need to buy a laptop within the next week so I have a few questions about the air.
Does the 13inch i5 version support hyperthreading to 4 cores and turbo boost?
Is the difference in performance between the i5 and i7 worth it?
Would the air be good enough to use word/PowerPoint with a lot of tabs open in chrome with no lag? (School laptop)
Am I better off getting a 13inch BBP? Or is the air the same performance wise? (I don't need the DVD drive or ethernet)

All the intel chips have the turbo boost. No MacBook Airs have quad core chips. They are only duo core. You need the pro book for the quad cores. As a school laptop the air is great because of the SSD. It opens quickly after moving while studying here and there. You can buy a pro book then eventually put a SSD in it if that is what you are looking for. But because apple makes all of their parts and software, you do not need as big of a cpu as you would need on a PC.

Yes, it's usually called a wireless network card
well does apple have something like that
Yes, all Apple Macs have a built-in wireless card
and my question about the airport express... Say i go to the airport
Um... I think you're maybe getting confused over the name "AirPort". It's just a brand name: "Air" because the data travels over the air wirelessly, and "Port" because the point on a router where you connect a computer is called a "port".
It has nothing to do with the place you go to catch a flight on an airplane/aeroplane. Apple's Airport devices are just wireless home routers, just like similar devices from Netgear, D-Link et al.
and don't want to pay 6.99 for 24 hours of internet use and i'm only there for 2 hours... So is it possible to just plug in the airport express and bam i'll have internet?
Not unless you know how to hack into the existing wireless service they already provide, and that wouldn't require the wireless router, just your laptop.

Crucial is very good too, but I think many of us would put OWC on the same level. Maybe search here for OWC or macsales.com -- they give great service and their products are highly reliable.
They also have a small rebate if you send them back the RAM that came with your iMac. (see the yellow "Memory Trade In Rebate" button on that same page).

  • Can anyone help? I have downloaded and installed the QuickTime MPEG-2 Component but it doesn't work.

I purchased the QuickTime MPEG-2 component for Quicktime as I am using Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and I want to be able to via MPEG-2 transport streams.
I paid £14.00 - everything downloaded and installed fine but it doesn't work and I am still unable to view the transport streams in Quicktime even though according to the website this is want the component will let me do.
I have rebooted several times, reinstalled both Quicktime and the MPEG-2 component and still nothing.  I have then spent ages going around and around in circles on the website trying to find a way of emailing customer services or technical support to get some assistance but I just always end back in the same place no further forward.
Please can anyone else offer any suggestions - either how I can get it working or how I can get my £14 back from Apple!!

    1) Suggest you reread the "Feature" details for the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component paying particular attention to the paragraph titled "Can transport streams be played?" which clearly states that this codec does NOT support the playback of transport stream (TS) files.
    2) This codec can only be used with "classic" QT apps such as the QT 7 player, GarageBand, or third-party apps like the free MPEG Streamclip app.
    3) The VLC player intrinsically supports TS files. MPEG Streamclip with the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installed supports TS file playback.
    4) MPEG Streamclip with the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installed can also resave muxed TS file content as muxed program stream (PS) content which is then "playback" compatible with both QT 7 and QT X players (assuming you select an audio compression format compatible with both) or convert the muxed TS content to QT "edit" compatible compression formats if desired.
Please can anyone else offer any suggestions - either how I can get it working or how I can get my £14 back from Apple!!
Apple seldom makes refunds to people who successfully purchase software which they do not really understand how to use—cavaet emptor. It is difficult to make suggestions here without knowing more about your personal preferences and/or work flow requirements. I personally would keep the codec to enhance various playback, conversion, and editing options on my Mac.

  • IDVD and the Apple MPEG-2 Component

Is there a benefit to one over the other when it comes to encoding MPEG-2? I download MPEG Streamclipl and it's telling me that I need the MPEG-2 Component if I want to encode to MPEG-2. But why do I have to spend $20 on a component that I have already got in iDVD?

Isn't that exactly what a VOB file is, only with a different extension? If not, what is the difference?
    Sort of ...
    From several wiki articles:
A VOB file (DVD-Video Object) is a container format that contains the actual Video, Audio, Subtitle (VobSubs) and Menu contents in stream form. When you play an MPEG video from a DVD, for instance, the MPEG stream is actually composed of several streams (called Elementary Streams, ES): there is one stream for video, one for audio, another for subtitles, and so on. These different streams are mixed together into a single Program Stream (PS). So, the .VOB files you can find in a DVD are actually MPEG-PS files.
VOB files are encoded very much like standard MPEG-2 files. If the extension is changed from .vob to .mpg or .mpeg, the file is still readable and continues to hold all information, although most MPEG-2-capable players don't support subtitle tracks.
I'm going to settle with with making the content in DV and Quicktime, and then simply putting it in iDVD to make the VOBs. At that point if I want to edit my DVD compilations, I can arrange the VOBs however I wish, after saving them out of the DVD compilation images that were created to house them. I want to be able to use the files independent from their DVD structure, until I'm ready to archive them on disc.
ah... if you want to do that, I'd get DVD SP and use the Compressor application that come with it because, among other things, you could use Dolby compressed audio instead of just the uncompressed audio supported by iDVD. It also gives you many more encoding options. Getting DVD SP is NOT a low cost option, however.

  • Mpeg 2 component

The mpeg 2 component I purchased does not appear to be working.  Here is the background.  I have a file that is mpeg 2, I am trying to open it, in the past, I have done everything short of buying the quicktime component.  The only program that can successfully [and I say that with a grain of salt] open the video is VLC.  Every time I try to convert it it comes out skittery with the VLC frame around it.  I finally broke down and bought the QT component but I still can't opent he video in QT, there is just no video at all.  I am crazy confused and hope that I am missing something very obvious.
    Thanks

    Cheers Kirk,
It`s slightly confusing, you`d expect a brand new purchase/download to be the latest version!
    Many thanks

  • I can't install Quicktime MPEG-2 Component in OS X Lion

    Hi friends,
Today, I tryed install Quicktime MPEG-2 Component for use with software 'MPEG Streamclip'. I have a Macbook reformated and with OS X Lion.
But the system alert me: This component can't install in this system, it's for older operative system.
    What's I can do?
I have a iMac, with OS X Lion too, but it's not fomated. Before it was installed MPEG-2 Component, and I can use software perfectly.
For example, Can I transfer codec MPEG-2 from iMac to Macbook? Where's installed codec in my iMac?
Thanks very much... and I'm sorry for my english...

You can do in the System Preferences pane, but there is another way: position the mouse pointer on the dividing line between files and applications and drag up or down.

  • Quicktime MPEG 2 Component

    Hello all,
I had to reinstall Tiger recently. I did an archive and install, so that all my prefs would carry across, and anything that didn't would still be in the previous system library. I noticed that a lot of Quicktime plugins fell into this latter category, and I had to copy them across into the new system folder. No problem so far.
But yesterday, when I tried to open a DVD .vob in MPEG Streamclip, which I had always been able to do previously, MPEG Streamclip told me it could open the .vob because the Quicktime MPEG 2 Component was missing. I went to the previous system folder, system/library/quicktime, and sure enough there was the aforementioned component. When i tried to copy it over, though, a dialogue came up with a choice to "authenticate" - but selecting that option did nothing.
I take it now (but correct me if I'm wrong) that this component is installed as part of Quicktime Pro when you have Final Cut Pro intalled on your machine. I do have FCP installed, and retained it of course when I did the archive and install. I've fired up FCP to see if it installs the MPEG 2 component in the current library, but no joy.
I know it's only 20 bucks to buy the QT MPEG 2 component from the Apple store, but I feel like that's a bit of a ripoff seeing as I paid a grand or so for FCS and the component should already be there.
Any tips for how to move QT MPEG 2 Component from my previous system library into the current one, or reinstall it given I have FCS/QT Pro?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Rob

Archive and Install is not an advisable way to reinstall your operating system. It's fine for things like iTunes but it could make more complicated apps like Final Cut Pro unstable.
It might be worth reinstalling Final Cut Studio:
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcs_remover.htm
When i tried to copy it over, though, a dialogue came up with a choice to "authenticate" - but selecting that option did nothing.
Did it not ask you for an admin password?
