Before I purchase iLife, can I ... ?

I have not burned anything but Data DVDs (&CDs), so I may sound somewhere between ignorant or stupid: I have downloaded the episodes of Prison Break, Jerico, Lost, etc, and I would like to burn them on to a DVD in order to watch them on the DVD player/TV in the living room. I do not own iDVD. I only own the ancient Toast 5.2.1. I am on a 15 in. iMac with OS X.4.8 with a SuperDrive Combo (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104). I was wondering if I purchase the latest iDVD (iLife), will I be able to accomplish this? If not, what are my other possibilities (i.e. upgrading to Toast 7, etc.)? Is there an article that describes how to do what I desire to do, so that I do not skip some critical step.
Thank you very much,
Gino

I am having server issues at the moment with apple's web site and Firefox. So I will do my best to reply. Please try and be patient for a reply since posting is extreamly problematic at the moment ...
Suggest you look into Eye TV products that work very well for what you are attempting to do.
Another approach that I often use is to import the TV show (non copy protected) directly into iMovie via firewire + camcorder with analog to digital pass thru feature and then finally to iDVD. The camcorder w/ digital pass thru would act as an interface to your VCR /deck and the iMovie/mac
Toast software also works well for this btw as already suggested.
