Before I throw my iMac G5 !!

Yes, iMac G5 ,512RAM ,160GB , 17" .
Tiger 10.4.11 was installed on the previous hard drive ( before it damaged ), with EFI firmware 1.9 ,
After I replaced the hard drive with a new one I tried to boot from the original Tiger CD1 but it seems no chance to boot from ! because it need the original EFI firmware 1.4 to be instead of 1.9 !
I search the forum for some help to downgrade the firmware back to EFI 1.4 ,but no such thread ! maybe because it technically NOT possible !
So before I throw it away any suggestion ,
Thanks

The firmware updater may not like your original Tiger disc because your Tiger discs may have an older version of Tiger than the firmware update may want to see.
My recommendation, you can install a total of 2 GBs of RAM into your G5.
512 MBs of RAM  is really bare mimimum running any version of OS X.
Reliable RAM for Macs can be found online at two sites. Either Crucial memory or OWC.
Forget Tiger and install the black, retail version of OS X 10.5 Leopard.
At this point, you would need a retail version Tiger disc with a newer update than what you have already on CD.
Tiger is very old, now and retail Tiger discs on hard to find and very expensive, now.
OS X 10.5 Leopard can still be found. Search for it on Amazon.
It may be more expensive than the original OEM Apple price, but it can still be found fairly easily.
This is the last OS X version you can install on your G5.
As an aside note,
Before shelling out additional cash for newer resources for this old an iMac, especially for an upgrade to OS X10.5 Leopard, if you can't afford a new iMac, have you considered buying a newer, used intel iMac?
Potentially purchasing an iMac between say mid 2007 to maybe 2009 or 2010.
You could get your Mac experience more up to date.
You are running PowerPC software, you need to look for a used Mac that is still running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard uses a piece of software called Rosetta that allows your PowerPC software to still function on a Mac with intel processor. Using this version of OS X means you won't have to update any of your software.

  • PLEASE help before I throw my iMac G4 out of the apartment window

    Hello Apple Experts.
I hope that you can help me out here before I throw my iMac G4 out of the apartment window!!!!
I am having major problems with my wireless connection on my iMac G4(Uses original Airport Card).
When I installed 10.4 the connection was just very weak and not all the bars on the Airport icon were highlighted.
Also, on occasions the connection was totally lost and the iMac didn't even see the base unit (non apple) whilst it was switched on.
Now that I upgraded to 10.4.10 (using the PPC combi update), the Imac does not see or connect to the base unit at all.
As far as I know the card and antenna is conneted properly as I followed the Apple set up guide.
I know that the base station is fine as I have another mac in the house that connects with no issues....
I am wondering if there is a general issues with the iMac G4's connecting wirelessly with the Airport Card.
It seems there maybe three problems here.
    1) There is an issues with the software update
    2) There is a problem with the Airport Card (although it is brand new)
    3) I need to configure someting to make it work!
Hope someone can help me here.
    Thanks for your time.

I'm getting the same problem. Probably since 10.4.10 but I can't be sure. I am have just been perplexed at why my other machines are working OK and my iMac G4 17" 1Ghz is having network problems. It has the original Aiport Extreme Card inside. I was Googling and saw a suggestion to delete all your "Network Locations" then start fresh. I've just tried that and I'm running a ping for a while to see how its performing. I think its improved but the signal read only 2 bars still when my MacBook Pro right next to it read 100%.

Remove the hard drive and either retain it or, if it is of no further use, crush it.

  • SOMEONE PLEASE HELP BEFORE I THROW MY MAC OUT OF THE WINDOW!

    Is my setup useless?
Logic crashes every time I open more than 1 external synth (e.g. predator, massive, ABL2). This occurs with no other instruments in the project.
It cant seem to take the CPU.
    Here is what I have….
Apple iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz 512MB (2x256MB) 160GB (upgraded with 2gig of ram – as much as it can take!)
    Logic 7
    OSX 10.4.11
M Audio Oxygen V8 midi keyboard
Memory 2GB667 MHz DDR SD RAM
    1.47gb memory free
92.82gb space free on hard drive
Can anyone offer some advice? Surely for what I have paid for the system, I should be able to get more out of it than this?…. is there anything else I can do to boost processing power?
    Any help is massively appreciated!

    Hi David,
Before sleeping out of your window waiting your Imac, maybe I would suggest couple things:
    - Getting LOGIC 7.2.3
    - Getting last M-AUDIO drivers (if lot compliant one)
    - Repair permissions with let's say ONYX software.
    - Are you using external firewire hardrive? (issue for some of Imac sometimes)
if this still causes you troubles, then you 'll see my face outside your house with my arms ready.
    Cheers.

  • Before I sell my iMac?

I recently upgraded to a new iMac, but the old one still works. I've gone thru and deleted my business and personal files. Then did a secure empty trash. Erased the external HD. Is there anything else I should do before I sell it for my protection?

    Ken,
By erase and install, I was referring to booting from the distribution disk that came with your Mac and using disk utility to erase the Mac's HD. Then proceed with the installation process up to the point it reboots and presents a welcome screen just like a new system. Then turn the system off.
This Will erase all the programs except those that come with the OS.

  • Time Capsule - usage suggestions - before I throw it out!

Hi any suggestions to what I should use my old time capsule (500GB) for?
I stopped using it a year or two ago as I got a much faster router and I got tired og timemachine auto backup. Since I have not used it for anything. But I figure throwing away 500GB storage away is a bit silly. So before I do that, I thought you guys might have a suggestion or two?
What can I use it for if I don't want to use it for TimeMachine (auto backup) or a router?
Any suggestions to what and HOW to do it?
    On my wishlist is:
External hard disk - for manual backups. Just plugging in a USB and bam. Doesn't seem to work though.
Hard disk for my Samsung smart TV to record stuff on it. Doesn't seem to work. (I do not have an apple tv)
    Thanks.

You cannot use it as local drive.. ie USB.. it is now and forever a network drive. You must use it via wireless or ethernet.
You cannot use it with most TV's as it is not local drive.. if the TV works with network drives the issue is does it require DLNA server.. TC is without any servers, other than basic file server.
I do use the TC to stream movies, but you need a real media player.. ie WD live TV or a hacked Apple TV..
Since the Gen1 is really old and will not be reliable now, I think you are better just selling it on ebay or similar.

  • Did not update firmware before installing tiger now imac wont turn on....

I bought tiger for my imac dv g3 400mh computer and bought additional memory from crucial so that it would load on.
I got a message on screen saying that I needed to update firmware and to restart my computer which I did and now it will not turn on. The power button is on but the screen is blank.
I have read an article posted on here and I tried everything (the sleep/wake trick)etc but it still will not work.
    any help will be appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Fortunately your Mac has a VGA port in its back panel, which should work to connect an external display while you apply the firmware after the fact. So find someone who has a VGA display, and download this firmware update and apply it while booted off the hard disk.
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n75130
It is only the internal display which goes dark if the firmware was not applied before attempting to install 10.2 or later.

  • I'd like to know a fair asking price for my macbook pro before i throw it up for sell.

Hello everybody! if you dont mind i am asking for what you would ask for the macbook i have for sell! i opened it brand new december 23, 2012 with plans of taking an online course starting jan 7, 2013 on january 4th ,2013 i was admitted to the hospital and was there 3+months. i didnt take it back outta the box untill the begining of April once i was cleared to do ceratin activities again. it is a 15.4" macbook pro mid-2012 9,1 2.66ghz, 8gb ram, 750gb hdd, 10.8.3.mountain lion os x, if any more specs are needed for an fair estimate please let me know! i simply do not need this mamoth of a laptop so my plan is to sell it and then by a smaller mac or maybe evan an imac that will suit my needs. any advice is greatly appreciated! thank U much!    ---ryan

I'd suggest checking eBay - search your specific model.  Then, look in the left hand column on your screen for the words "More refinements ..."  Click it.  In the window that pops open, at the bottom of the left column, click "Show only."   Then click "Completed listings" and click Go.    Now you will see what MacBook Pros like yours actually sold for on eBay.
You can also get quotes from many of the online Mac resellers (for example, MacOfAllTrades) ... but they will only offer a price more like "wholesale" because they are in the resale business.
Third thought, if this is truly a like new, barely used MBP, you should be able to sell it for 80% or more of what you purchased it for.  Macs hold their value pretty well, especially if they are recent models.

  • HELP! Before I throw my MP560 out the window!

I purchased a MacBook Pro in August 2010, and along with it the Canon MP560. I have it setup to print wirelessly from my macbook to the printer. Everything was going great until about a month ago. I can not get it to print, an error pops into the utility, saying "A communication error has occurred." I checked my system update and according to it, all my software is up to date.
I've also been having problems that the printer will print 1-2 inches of the page (very slowly), once it even printed 3/4 of the page before stopping...then gives "A communication error has occurred. Error Number : 306 A communication error has occurred. Make sure that the printer is plugged in, powered on, and properly connected to your computer. Then try printing again." Any ideas what is going on? Of course it is connected because it prints part of the pages.
Due in part to some bad advice I've read on here I can't even get the D&*) thing to work now and I'm about to chunk it! So if you can help, STEP BY STEP for a non-computer person like me, that would be great!

First thing, don't bother looking for an Ethernet port as Star1 suggested. This model does not have one.
The 306 communication error will occur if the wireless signal strength between the printer and router or Mac and router is poor. In most cases it is the printer at fault rather than the Mac. And this would explain the portion of the page only printing, as the machine fails to keep its connection to your wireless router.
You can check the signal strength by opening Safari and selecting the Bookmark icon in the toolbar. Within the sidebar that appears in Safari you will see Bonjour. Select this and the right pane should show the MP560. Select this and Safari will open the MP560 web page. The first page will show the Signal Strength and Link Quality. If either of these are below 50% then trying moving the printer closer to your wireless router and then refreshing the MP560 home page. If moving the printer closer to the router does not improve either measured value then try turning off the printer for a minute and then back on again. Now check the values again. If the values still fail to show better than 50% then I would suggest that the wireless channel being used by your router is changed. So if this is the case then reply and we'll explain the next steps.
If the wireless signal strength and link quality are above 50% then the printer queue can be added again. To ensure you have the latest driver for this model I suggest you download and install the [Canon v2.4.1 Printer Update|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL899] from Apple. This will update the MP560 printer driver to v10.36.2.0.
With this update installed open Print & Fax and select to Add and select the Default icon. The MP560 scanner component should appear quickly, showing Bonjour Scanner in the Kind column. If you don't have the scanner installed we can add this later. With the scanner showing wait a bit and the printer component should also appear, showing canonijnetwork in the Kind column. Select this and the Print Using menu should automatically change to Canon MP560 series. Click Add when it does.
With the printer queue added you can open a document and try printing to the MP560. If it works then you can add the scanner. If it doesn't print and gives an error then please reply.

  • Please help before I throw my i pad away

I had my i pad stoled last week so bought a new one (i pad 1 version). When i turn i tunes on and connect my i pad to my laptop to take it through the set up etc, my i pad does not appear as a device in i tunes. I have just spent 4 hours trying repeatedly to get it to work. If anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated. Otherrwise i think i will have to give up on it and put it in the cupboard never to be seen again. I am IT illiterate and so got the **** machine as i was told it was user friendly!

Don't throw it away. You'll get it to work.
First, when you plug into a power outlet does the iPad charge?
If yes, what type of computer? If a Mac, when you plug into a REAR USB port directly, does it charge? If no, it might be a cable issue. Do you have your prior iPads cable? Have you tried each cable? Some cables aren't good? If iTunes doesn't see it with either cable then move on further. What version of iTunes are you running? What iOS version came loaded on your iPad? Next thing to check is that both are compatible. Newer iPad iOS versions require your iTunes to be upgraded to a recent version as well. If you are running an older iTunes version, it might not be compatible with the version on the iPad. You would need to upgrade your iTunes version, or vice versa on the iPad.
Here is some good stuff from Apple.

and of course you can always go with the option of throwing the computer out of the window...

  • What must be done before I sell my iMac?

I recently bought a new iMac and migrated everything to my new iMac from my old iMac.  Now if I sell my old iMac what must be done to it so that my personal information is not left on it?

I recommend you to erase the hard disk using a Disk Utility's security option and reinstall Mac OS X. If your iMac came with DVDs:
    1. Insert the OS X disc and press C key when your Mac starts.
    2. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD, go to Erase tab and erase the disk. If you want, press Security Options and select one of them, but the erase will take more time.
    3. Close Disk Utility and install Mac OS X. When it finishes, turn off your Mac
