Before I trash it!!!!!

Figured I would ask before I kill this thing. Few months ago my Macbook pro, which I bought in 2007 got the whatever color screen and the message "you need to restart your computer" in five different languages. Did it everytime I started it. Lost lots of pictures, because I was a azz and did not back up, I learned! Brought it in to a guy, and he said hard drive gone. Wanted $250 bucks to fix it. Firgured I would give it a try and put one in myself. Put in a Seagate Momentus 7200/500...for me that's a huge attempt, I suck at this stuff
First time I put it on, I got the 5 language message again. Read a old post from Michael on here that said to do some things, did that, I guess format it, or let my computer know it has a new brain after doing that it worked. For about a day! Now it freezes a lot and I get the 5 language message again. Not alway, but more and more. I'm just about ready to run it over with the car. Any ideas or help would be great!
Bill

Haha...thought I'd let you know, didn't need a new hard drive, whole MAMA board was replaced by Apple, and covered, luck day for me So, never bring your computer to a computer guy, he's just guessing Well, I updated my hard drive anyway
thanks,
Bill

  • My startup disc is full and I want to find out the size of trash and junk in mailbox before dumping trash & junk

I have gotten this message saying that my startup disc is full.
I know I need to dump the trash can on my home screen and I have done that.
I know that there is both trash and junk in my mail app that I will dump also but I am curious as to the size of the trash and junk in mail but I don’t see how to find the sizes.
Its nice that the Junk tells me that there are 739 messages but it doesn’t say what the size of all of them is.
Do you know how i can see what the file sizes are for trash and Junk in Mail?
I know I can just delete them and see how much this yellow bar decreases but that seems like a crude way to see what the file sizes are that I have deleted.
If you have an answer for how to find out the file sizes of the Mail trash and junk I would like to know how to do it.
I have the latest version 10.9.4 on my Mac Air.

do you have the Size Column selected in the View pulldown?

  • Confirm before dialing? like Confirm before emptying trash?

Is there a way to stop the iphone from automatically dialing phone numbers?
On missed calls when I want more info or listen to the message it calls the number. I cringe every time I check messages.
I would just like a little control like the conformation screen I have for
    emptying trash on my Mac.
Anyone know if Apple allows that option on their phone?

It is what it is, if you don't like the way things work now, suggest Apple change things here, as only Apple could make the change you want:

  • MBPro i7 -- Any Tips Before I Trash Win 7 and Reinstall?

Latest MB Pro 17, Core i7, 8GB RAM. The Boot Camp/Win 7 Pro (retail package) 64-bit install seemed to work properly. The subsequent Boot Camp Drivers downloaded and installed properly. Win 7 activated normally. No software installed other than Boot Camp Drivers. Win 7 will run only a couple of minutes before crashing with a Black screen and memory dump.
Start from scratch I know about. Any other ideas? Should I have installed as 32-bit?
    TIA!

There was no reason an Intel MacBook / MacBook Pro couldn't use Windows 7.
Apple's drivers are always iffy. Your OEM Snow Leopard with new MBP will have to have newer / latest drivers.
You shouldn't take everything Apple says about Windows and support as gospel, try taking with a grain of salt.
I'm sure the i7 is much faster and nicer, but not required. And Pro is only required for dual cpu sockets, and use to be needed to run XP Mode (that was dropped recently by Microsoft).
I don't see that you needed W7 Pro or a new MBP.
Apple does have trouble with two things: booting Windows 64-bit DVDs on some Macs; addressing more than 2GB on earlier Intel Macs that had 32-bit EFI (instead of Unified EFI 2.x which is 64-bit).
64-bit Windows has better threading, multicore support, memory handling. And can be more secure. Strongly recommend for anyone with 4GB. Doubt you would see or notice your apps running better or different. And having to use 64-bit drivers should not be an issue (isn't on my three systems).
Windows Home Premium would have done the trick probably. And there are methods to install 64-bit even on old MacBooks, though probably due for an upgrade anyway!

  • HT203175 My ITunes software on my Dell computer is not displaying the menu items or the windows content of my music.  The menus are active, but you cannot see the choices.  I suspect a missing font set.  Any suggestions before I trash the whole environmen

Loading the last two versions of the ITunes software to my Dell computer has produced unacceptable results.  None of the pull down menus are showing the menu choices and none of the content on my IPod Touch shows up in the appropriate window.  As a result, I have an interface with no functionality.  It does still sync my Touch but that is all.  I assume a missing font set.  Any suggestions on how to correct these issues.
I also now get a message that ITunes cannot play back anything on my computer and a request to reinstall the software - which I have done multiple times both the original and the upgrade.

  • Can't get battery to charge - please help before I pull my hair out

My daughter and I both have the Curve 8530, first, her battery didn't seem to hold a charge very long, then her charging port stopped working.  So we started swapping the batteries.  When hers was low, I would give her mine with more charge and charge up the other one, using it until the first one needed a charge.  That started getting more and more frequent, now, all of the sudden I can't get either one to charge in my phone.  Figured out that hers doesn't charge because it is broken.  We can see a piece of metal that should be on the little tab in the port, laying at the bottom of the port.  Mine is a little loose after 2 years, so I sometimes have to wiggle the connection or make sure I set it down and don't move it when it is charging.  However, this is making me crazy.  It was plugged into my computer usb to charge all night and was completely dead this morning.  Which, is not a big suprise as the usb port on my computer doesn't always like to charge the BB.  Gives me an error saying not enough power.  So I plugged in the wall charger and let it sit.  It gets far enough that it will start the OS, but then sat there for hours and never changed from red and didn't get even 1 bar of charge.  Usually it only take a short time.  I read another post about an internal circular battery under the sticker with all the identification numbers on it, but I don't see any battery resembling that and am not comfortable taking my BB apart like that.  So any suggestions as to what the problem might be?  Or how to fix it?  My daughter's, though she doesn't think so, is not near as important as having at least one battery for mine due to work, etc.  Thanks for reading and any help.
    Jenn

I would suggest trashing the .itl and .xml files to make sure you start clean (quit iTunes before you trash the files, of course). Then use the Add Folder To Library command and select your iTunes Music folder. That should get everything back into iTunes, though you won't get any playlists back unless you made a backup of them.

  • Problem Emptying Trash filled with Time Machine Back Up Files

I have needed to create more space on an external hard drive that I use for TIme Machine back up of my hard  drive.  I took some of the Time Machine back ups [2011 and 2012] and dumped them into my trash.  I have gone into my Preferences and removed the check mark beside the "empty trash securely" so that I can get rid of the folders faster.  I have a Mac X snow leopard operating system 10.6.8.
However, it takes about 1o hours to have the trash "preparing to empty trash" identify about 175,000 files.  I don't know how many I have in their but it has got to be over a million.
What can I do to get rid of all of these files from my Time Machine back up?  I don't want to wait five or six days before the trash starts to empty. Appreciate any help you can give.  Thanks.

  • IPhoto trashed images....

Hi, New to mac so my apologies if this is old hat...
I decided to clear out old files and things from the documents folder in the finder window, not realising that it was my photos and some itunes content... I have since discovered that (of course) the images wont show up properly in iphoto. i am able to see the thumbnails but when i enlarge them i get the '!' as discussed on other threads. After a lot of google-ing and forum reading i worked out how to send individual files back to there original place before being trashed. however i could only get this to work on individual files. I have over 10,000 files and didnt want to sit here for however long it would take to do each one so i dragged the photos to a new folder on the desktop along with the audio (also to its own folder). I have tried the Iphoto restore options on startup but this hasnt solved my problems....
Where do i now put these photo files so that they appear where iphoto is expecting them?
Ive been thinking about upgrading to 10.6.8, ive never done that kinda thing before so is it worth me copying all my photos and audio onto a hard drive and starting from scratch? if so where will i find these folders in finder?
    Sam

iPhoto backs up it's database file - this will not fix your problem.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Leopard completely trashed my HDD and now won't install on my MBP

I only moved away from Windows in the summer and now I feel I'm no better off. I've just upgraded my new MBP (only a few months old) to Leopard and it failed. Not only did it fail with some Sibling Link error (which fsck_hfs -r and other internet search result recommendations failed to resolve) but it resulted in my having to completely reformat my drive!
I then let the install disk do a format of my drive and install and now I get this "The installer was unable to create the folder BaseSystem.pkg on the volume ...." or words to that effect. So now I have a new MBP that won't boot and won't install an operating system!
    What is this? Apple's Vista?
Is there anything I can do to get this operating system to install???

do you have a software install disk that came w/ your computer. If so, load it up, go to disk utility, zero out your HD, and then reinstall the OS from that disk. Leopard absolutely, completely, totally, and irreversibly hosed my pbg4, so much so that not only would it not eject the fri@@@@ Leopard DVD, it wouldn't even cotton pickin' START UP, save for booting into Open Firmware.. I decided that before I trashed it, I'd try one more time to start it up, hold down the **** eject key, to see what happened. I waited 30 minutes to let myself cool off before using the **** thing as target practice and, well, what'd'ya know, it started up, ejected the Leo DVD, immediately following which I inserted the disc for 10.2.7, shut it down, started it up, it booted immediatley into the installer for that OS, I went to disk utility, zero'd out the HD, after which I went about installing 10.2.7. I'm now on my pbg4 w/ that system installed and it's working (so far) flawlessly. What an absolute crock of rat @@@@ Leopard is turning out to be. Oh, btw, on this pbg4 there were no haxies, no 10.4.10 widgets, nothing fancy, save perhaps for Nisus Express and Firefox. I have Leo on a separate HD on my g5 dual 1.8 which is exactly where it's going to stay until all those bright bulbs at Apple can figure out what the **** is going on.
    Hope you have better fortune,
    tony

  • Problem with "sent" mail folder-how do I trash the prefs in Apple Mail?

Since no one has answered my original request for assistance regarding my "Sent Mail" mailbox, I'll move the issue aside and approach it differently: How do I trash the prefs in Apple Mail without trashing my inbox and all the other mailboxes? Trashing the prefs works for most apps, but if I do that to Mail, I'm screwed. My real problem remains: I can no longer see or read the email in my "sent mail" box; I can see the info identifying the entry, but I can't read the contents of the email. It's all there in the Mail folder on my hard drive, but it doesn't show up in the Mail app.
So how can I trash the prefs for "Mail" without trashing my inbox?

    Hello b:
I have only had to trash the Mail preference once, and I cannot remember what occurred (except that the application worked OK after that).
Before you trash the preference file, try rebuilding the mailbox(s).

  • How do you set the setting in iPhoto to ask before deleting a picture?

How do you set the setting in iPhoto to ask before deleting a picture?

If you delete a picture, it sends it to iPhoto trash (left column), there you can permently delete using the empty trash with the icon in the upper right corner. It will come up with a warning if you want tp permently delete trash (photos).  It the iPhoto trash you can drag them back out, once you empty the trash, they are gone.
You can also go to finder preferences>advanced, and unclick secyre empty trash, and make sure show warning before empting trash is clicked.

  • No option to "Put Back" files that were trashed?

In Snow Leopard, I thought we were giving the feature of right clicking a file and choosing "put back" to put the file back where it was before being trashed. However, I don't have this option. I am running 10.6.1
    Example:

Also some programs, such as Aperture, allow you to move an item to the Trash from within the program. Files moved in this way also don't get the "Put Back" option. You have to move something yourself directly from the Finder into the Trash in order to have Put Back.

  • Iphoto Deleted but not trashed

My Iphoto library was trashed but the trash was not deleted. I dragged it to the desktop then dragged it to the dock but it isn't working properly. I have the pictures in my library but whenever I scroll thru the pictures or even click on the iphoto icon I get the spinning wheel on a regular basis.
I never got the wheel until I trashed the iphoto and tried to restore.
Was there better way to restore the iphoto application after I trashed it? Thanks in advance

Okay, so this is a little tricky, since the terminology you are using is conflicting, so let's see what's going on...
    1) From your wording, it seems that you trashed the iPhoto LIBRARY, not the Application itself...if this is the case, you're going to have to figure out where your iPhoto library originally existed, before you trashed it (WHY DID YOU TRASH YOUR IPHOTO LIBRARY, by the way?). You can use Google, but I know for me, personally, I moved my iPhoto library from where it originally was created.
    2) Another thing that you can do, is to hold the "Alt/Option" key down as you're opening iPhoto. This will allow you to choose an iPhoto library. Browse to the one that you pulled out of the trash, and this HOPEFULLY should repair it.
Let me know if this works. By the way, why are you asking this in the iPhone 4 forum?

  • CUCM 6.1 DirSync and CUCM trash collector program

If I turn on DirSync and CUCM syncs LDAP data to CUCM but I then turn off DirSync before the trash collector program runs will my original user data be there in the CUCM corp directory?

    Peter,
    Right on.
So what you are saying is that if I enable DirSync and allow the sync to happen and I don't like the results I can disable DirSync before the garbage collector program runs and my original CUCM User database data will be available again?
The main thing I was trying to determine is if DirSync is enabled and the actual sync process happens does it permanently alter my CUCM User database at that point even before the garbage collector program runs.
Somebody pointed me to the correct documentation for "Cisco Unified Communications Solution Reference Network Design (SRND)
Based on Cisco Unified Communications Manager Release 6.x"
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/srnd/6x/uc6_0.html
It includes some really thorough information on LDAP Directory Integration.
I am currently reading through the details.
Man I wish I had found this from the start it would have saved me a lot of time and questions! :)

  • Itunes folder got put in trash and dumped....

So now I've created a new library but how do I get it to work [ I have a new blank itunes .. that when I open ITunes preferences> advanced, shows me the library still resides on my external drive just like before I accidently dragged it to the trash ]! I have everything backed up on an external drive. What and how do I drag the old library into the new one I've created on my computer.

I had this tiny version of "Itunes music"
Depends what this was. If it was your iTunes folder (not iTunes Music folder) and you were running the LIBRARY (not the music) from your Mac, then you trashed your library but not your music.
I could have deleted the music in Itunes music but instead I got rid of all of it
    Sorry, you lost me.
Some time back I must have changed the location of the library in Itunes preferences to reside in my Macs HD, which created Itunes>Itunes music that I mistakely dumped
No, you are mixing up your MUSIC (folder) and your LIBRARY - the one contains all your music files, the other contains all your playlists etc. You mean - I think - that you changed the location of your MUSIC folder back from the eHD to your Mac, which means any music you added after that will have been on your Mac (the "tiny" folder you found). As for your Library (playlists etc) it depends entirely where this was located - on your Mac or on the eHD?
I downloaded a new version of Itunes from the apple site to get started
You didn't need to do this - the app itself is entirely separate from your music and playlists
there was of course nothing in it
No, this is because you deleted either your Library or your music, not because you downloaded the app (people upgrade to new versions of iTunes all the time, but their Library still opens with everything in it intact).
i have a copy of the library xml siting on my desktop ---- should i trash it??? .
At the moment I have no idea whether you trashed your music, your Library, or both. If the XML file is your Library playlists from before you trashed whatever you trashed, then importing it could restore your playlists. You need to look at its Create Date and decide. Your call. If it is a small file dated from after you "trashed" then it's no good to you, and you could trash it.
I dragged the Itunes folder in "MUSIC" on the eHD to the new open and blank Itunes on my Mac, and the song titles started to immediately transfer to Itunes
You mean the "iTunes Music folder"? If so then yes, this will re-add all your music, but not your playlists.
when I go to my computers users>home little house>music.... i see a folder with a music note on it, and underneath it has , name, kind ,and size, and when created. BUT under size it just has -- and that's it
No problem. Folders in Finder List view show up with -- for Size. You would have to do a Command-I Get Info to see its size.
This music folder on my Macs users>music> "blue music folder with note on it",looks exactly the same as before I did all the above and got Itunes working. It looks kind of empty!! Should that be how it looks?
Is it really empty? Look, check, and see. But if Preferences are still pointing to your eHD as you say, then all you've done is add the music on your eHD to your iTunes Library on the Mac - without actually importing the music. What you have done is simply rebuild your Library. What I don't know is where your iTunes Library database file and iTunes Music Library.xml file are.
    What about my playlists?
If you trashed your iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files, then they are gone I'm afraid.
