Before I upgrade to Yosemite, can an "expert" please assist

Hi all,
I have been putting off updating to Yosemite after reading about lots of bugs & issues people have had.
Now deciding that I would like to take the plunge, I am still worried that if something goes wrong I won't have a clue what to do.
Ive just run an Etre check and would like one of you very clever & knowledgeable people to take a look and let me know if I have any problems on my 2011 iMac, running OS X 10.8.5.

Check the OWC site. The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives.
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

This may be a solution. i take it your photos were in iPhoto. If so they will still be in your iPhoto library.
This library should be in your pictures folder, see below.
If you control-click on the library and from the drop down menu choose open, hopefully iPhoto will open and you will see your photos.
This worked for me, so I hope it works for you.

That's going to be a ridiculous waste of money and energy.
First of all, the current ATI drivers don't support multiple GPUs, so at the moment even a single 4870X2 would be only a 'normal' 4870 (which is quite a speed beast already). GFX drivers evolve rapidly, so things might look different next month, but when it comes to Linux and hardware there's one Golden Rule: stay away from the newest stuff and wait for proper support to get coded.
I also wonder what power supply could possibly cope with the differences between idle and full load; that's way beyond 400W. But then, I'm one of those "quiet&green" types where >100W idle is already a bit much.
I kind of understand that you want to get it done and not worry about hardware for the next 10 years or so, but that's simply not how the hardware world works and never did. At least not for the average consumer.

Upgraded to Yosemite, can no longer mount Mac shared folder on Windows 7 pc.

At the weekend I upgraded to Yosemite, and really liked the new look.
There is a folder on my mac which is shared over SMB so that it can be mounted as a network drive on a Windows 7 system. This has worked just fine for years, but then after the upgrade I found that I was no longer able to connect to the share. When I tried to remap the share it just kept asking me for password over and over again and failing to connect.
Windows could see the Mac was there in its workgroup, but not let me access it.
I tried on a Linux system, which could also see the Mac, but not mount the share.
After spending hours trying to figure this out, I wound up restoring my system from a backup made the day before.
Once I'd rolled back to Mavericks, the share worked just fine again.
Any ideas? Because if I can't map to this shared area on my Mac, then I can't upgrade to Yosemite.

Upgraded to Yosemite can I upgrade cs2 to cs5 and get it to work

I just upgraded my computer not realizing cs2 would no longer run on Yosemite, can I upgrade my software and get it to work or do I need to buy the whole new software? I am not looking to go to the cloud.

You are long past any upgrade eligibility and even if you were to buy a CS6 license, there are compatibility issues with Yosemite. Getting Creative Cloud would make that much more sense...

I am considering upgrading from mavericks to yosemite. Do I need to disconnect my time machine external backup disc drive before I upgrade.

I was concerned that if the upgrade went wrong for any reason, it may corrupt the back up drive as well as the hard drive and I would somehow loose the ability to recover my files.

Upgraded to Yosemite, can't get Mail.

I upgraded to Yosemite from Snow Leopard, 10.6.8. I immediately experienced a problem importing mail to Yosemite. Upon opening Mail, the screen reads, "Mail Message Import". After attempting to import mail from inbox per instructions, I received a message that "Upgrade Failed." I followed the instructions to launch Mail Import Assistant. I then received a message: "Your Mail Index has been damaged. To repair it, quit Mail." I then quit Mail and repeated the sequence without success. Upon repeating the sequence, I get the exact same instructions and results. I'm stuck in a loop and have no Email capability at all and no obvious way to correct the situation. Help!

Try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

Upgraded to Yosemite - can't connect to windows Server using afp

I have upgraded to Yosemite from 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and now cannot connect to a windows merit used to connect to before. I previously used the afp protocol.
I get the message "The version server you are trying to connect to is not supported".
Is afp still supported with yosemite?
Do i need them to upgrade the server software?
It connects using smb, but does not display the same folders.

I am providing mac support for a group of mac users who make up the art department in a larger multinational company. As is often usual in these situations the larger PC IT department are incredibly unhelpful.
But I have just come online and had no part in the set up. The servers are overseas and managed by them. I have no idea why the used afp as the protocol. I just know it has worked this way for years.
The macs need to upgrade to go on to creative cloud.
I think he way forward is for them to change the access on the server to allow access using smb.
It is just difficult to deal with them because they aren't here tend to say "we dont support macs" when I contact them.

Update your email account info in iPhoto preferences.
When you choose to email from iPhoto, it uses its own settings, bypassing Mail altogether.

If I upgrade to Yosemite, can I revert back if I want?

I would like to try upgrading to Yosemite, but I'm sceptical as there is a lot of bad feedback with it. So if I do, and I find too many problems, can I revert back to Mavericks?

More RAM is always good if your machine can support it.

Upgraded to Yosemite, can't get an Extension manager that works with CS5

I am suing the CS5 suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, etc
Am trying to add some plugins to Photoshop and Extension Manager CS5.5 just crashes every time. Tried upgrading to EMCC and it won't open the extensions. It tells me I am need at least Photoshop 12.0. I thought CS5 was a later version.
I can't afford to upgrade when the suite works perfectly for me.
How do I get EM to work with the extensions I need?

Each version of Extension Manager only supports the corresponding verison of CS products. To install extensions for CS5 suite, you can only use Extension Manager CS5. Extension Manager CS5.5 or CC wouldn't work. But you have to download and install 5.0.3 update from Adobe Extension Manager Updates Downloads .

I simply don't like it and would like to go back to normal. There is no compatible ad-on for my new printer and I lost most of my bookmarks. Can I rewind back to where everything was before the upgrade. I can't even find my bank account.

I hate the tabs on top. Where did all my toolbar bookmarks go? And where are the rest of my bookmarks. I had at least 50 sites I love bookmarked and only about 5 are there now. My pc will let me reset everything to Oct. 2010, but I still lose about 6 months work finding good sites for my hobbies, business and coupons.

Hi everyone. I recently upgraded my Iphone 4S fromOS ver 5. to ver 6.0.1
Now if i connect to the internet via cellular data it does not work.
Before with the ver 5 everything was fine but with this upgrade things seem to be going wrong.
However the wi-fi connection is working very fine.

Upgraded to yosemite now my speakers don't work and i can't play videos on Facebook.

When i play a video on face book I'm told i need to upgrade flashplayer, i wasn't even aware i had it downloaded! I have got rid of flash player (i think ) and now I'm told i need to download FP before i can watch videos. I can't play games on FB either and my speakers don't work.
I wish i hadn't upgraded to Yosemite to be honest as i prefer the old layout and it seems to have caused me problems. Everything was working fine before the Upgrade to Yosemite.
Im not good with computer terminology so please reply as simply as possible :-)

Can't reconnect to Time Machine backups after upgrade to Yosemite

I did a clean install of Yosemite and restored the user accounts from my time machine backup. I reconnected to the time machine backup on my time capsule and performed a backup. That went fine.
Now I can't access any of the backups made before I upgraded to Yosemite. They all show up in the history bar on the right in time machine but when I click on a backup nothing loads. I've run a verify on the backup and it passes. Looking at the backup file it has 400GB of data, the same as before the upgrade to Yosemite.
Any ideas why I can't access the backups?

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user Library folder, first select a snapshot, then press shift-command-G. A Go to Folder dialog will open. In it, you'll enter the path to the folder. The dialog will help you by automatically completing the parts of the path when you start to type them.
The path begins with slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts will be separated by slashes.
The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a "2", and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right-arrow key to jump to the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next part.
Next is the name of the volume (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it a different name.) Start to type that, then jump to the end and enter a slash.
The next part is "Users", followed by a slash.
Next is your (short) user name, which is also the name of your home folder.
Finally, enter "Library", then press return. You should now be in the Library folder. From there you can get around as in the Finder.
