How to Make a Still from Video and Burning a DVD

Hello All,
I am using FCP HD and I would like to know how do you make a still photo from video footage?
Also I have to burn an editing project to dvd. I don't know how to use studio pro, but the person said that it needs to be a ntsc full resolution version. I am not sure what that means.
The project is about 10 minutes long and this person had me using the H.264. I have been playing around and I think I not doing something write because when I send the project to compressor it tells me that I have like 200+ hours befoe it outputs.
Could someone give me some simple instructions using the H.264 on how to do a good large size (over 320x240) QT movie to dvd?

To export a still park the playhead on the image you want, mark IN OUT, go to FILE>EXPORT>QUICKTIME CONVERSION. Click on QUICKTIME MOVIE and In the dropdown choose STILL IMAGE.
You will have to De-Interlace it in Photoshop after you export.
As for making the DVD:

To export your DV project so there is no loss in quality, simply go to the File Menu and select EXPORT>QUICKTIME MOVIE. Not Quicktime Conversion, fot this will compress the footage. Make sure the settings match your timeline settings, make it self contained and you are set.
Import this into iDVD or DVDSP and burn your DVD. Don't go the h.264 route.

I used to be able to make iDVDs to share. photos with family members. Now I can't even open iPhoto when I am working on iDVD. I have a 2008 iMac. I already recently updated the computer memory from 1GB to 4GB.

I have not been able to make any iDVDs lately. I can't open iPhoto to access media when I am in iPhoto. I presently am trying? Recently I updated the memory on my 2008 iMac from 1GB to 4GB, but this did not help. I just reinstalled iLife 2009. Can anyone help me?

Is it Possible to Transfer Movies from VHS and HI8 to DvD via Encore?

I have been trying to figure out a way to transfer my inlaws' home videos from VHS tapes and HI8 8mm tapes to my computer to burn them to DVD. I have been unsuccessful so far. I thought about just taking them to a transfer place, but there are roughly 30 tapes and I need 6 copies of each one. Any thoughts, recommendations, or links to helpful threads would be appreciated.
I don't know what format/resolution to transfer from into the computer or what will work best to burn out to DvD.
I have been told that I can't transfer directly into FCE without a firewire port (which this computer does not have) so I have been using a MyGica iGrabber to transfer files in.

Encore does not do video capture, that would be Premiere Pro via Firewire
A model 55 at http://www.grassvalley.com/products/converters is one way from external to computer, and creates the DV AVI files you need for PPro editing
If you don't need to edit the files at all, those DV AVI files may be used by Encore for DVD authoring
I know nothing about the device you mention... what kind of files does it create?

Set up iMovie Theater and iCloud
In order to take full advantage of the capabilities of iMovie Theater, you must be signed in to iCloud. If you are signed in to iCloud, movies and trailers shared to iMovie Theater are automatically uploaded to iCloud. You can also turn off automatic uploading, and upload just the movies and trailers you want, or delete individual movies and trailers from iCloud. Macs use an application called Migration Assistant to copy material from the old Mac to the new one. The macs are connected together and each runs Migration Assistance and the user chooses what stuf to copy onto the new Mac.
Unfortunately I do not know how to do this between pcs or between a Mac and a Pf or even if it's even possible.

At the moment you can't - though it should be possible (if it makes it into the final release) in iOS 5 which will be available sometime in the Autumn. Photos cannot currently be moved between albums on the iPad.
If you sync separate folders from your computer you'll get an album for each of them on the iPad, and you have to sync all the folders/albums that you want together as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad (not including a folder in a sync is the way that you delete it from the iPad).

I usually use the OS connection option. So as you suggest, connect without the ISP connection software. Doing so does not by-pass the sudo command being active in Activity Monitor however.
On reading my post I see my failure to link the concerns of the laptop purchase with the sudo and modem. My thought here is of an intersection of known vulnerability with this widely used modem/software (via permanent sudo process activated) and that vulnerability then being known and utilised by another party(s).
I am pursuing the issue in part with consideration to a broader possible issue of vulnerability.

I used to make family movies using iMovie and photos from iPhoto.
I have tried to do it again just to find out iMovie doesn't allow me to use photos. Only pieces of camera movies are now used by iMovie.
Do you know any way to import photos to iMovies?

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:

Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast, for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!

I want to make movies from my photographs, NOT videos. Does Premier Elements 11 support this? I have a free trial, but it is not letting me make instant movies from my album of photographs.

The trial version should not be an issue.
You should be able to do all that you said you want to do with Premiere Elements 11, but there are some considerations, like all programs.
Premiere Elements 11 tryout is the full program EXCEPT you need to download certain CONTENT from within the opened project. What Instant Movie theme did you select? Did it have a blue ban at its right top corner? If so, that means it is one of those options that needs to be downloaded so that you can use that theme. That happens to all, those trying the program or who have purchased.
If you can achieve your goal with Premiere Elements 7, you can with Premiere Elements 11 unless there is a particular Instant Movie Theme that is not in the other. And, the theme becomes a must have factor.
Windows Live Movie Maker and Premiere Elements (any version) are two different programs often with different feature sets, typically WLMM with less features but claimed to be easier to use.. In my first response to your question, I took the time to go through the process to outline the steps that you would be expected to follow in Premiere Elements 11 to achieve your task. I do not see much different in what I outlined from what you have probably already experienced with Premiere Elements 7 with this goal.
If you could tell me more about this "not supported" message, I will work with you to figure out what needs resolution. I would go into the importance of project preset and photo sizing in greater detail, but, if you have been working with Premiere Elements 7, you have been there and done that. However, as you can see there is a major interface change in Premiere Elements 11 as compared to prior versions. Setting of the project preset has been taken over by the program and sometimes it is necessary to step in and manually set the project preset. All learning curve details.
