BEFW11S4 V4 MTU No Affect?

I have an XP 'puter connected via wire to a BEFW11S4.  on the settings page of the router,  I set MTU to "enabled" and 1492.  My DSL provider says 1492 is the max MTU.
I have the IP address of the router set to static 192.168.1.10
When I enter:   ping -f -l 1273 192.168.1.10
it returns "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set."
In fact, 1273 is the larges packet size I can go without fragmenting.  DSL connection aside, I should be able to ping the router with 1464 bytes (1492 - 28) shouldn't I?  I upgraded the firmware on the router to the latest 1.52.02.
I'm pretty up on hardware and software, but not on tcp ip.  ANy help will be greatly appreciated.

Be sure to use a wired connection to the router.
Try using the default password of "admin"  (with no quotes).
If you cannot get into your router with any password, then the only option is to reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again.  After a reset to factory defaults, "admin" should work.

  • MTU for AToM question...

    Hi:
I have a question regarding AToM.
    Say I have CE1---PE1----P1----P2----PE2-----CE2
    CE1 to PE1 - Ethernet 802.1Q
    CE2 to PE2 - FR
To get AToM up and working, would I need to change the mtu on the PE and P routers in the core?
And if so to what value?
What command would I use, if I had to: mtu or mpls mtu?
    Thanks for your help.
    Sincerely.

So you would want to change the mpls mtu on the PE and P routers to accommodate a full ethernet frame plus the two mpls labels and any other additional info, like control words or vlan tag you might be transferring across the backbone, a value like 1514 would work, but if you ever decide to do straight ethernet to ethernet l2vpn with QinQ, then you would be up to 1530. If you maybe did serial links in the future, you'd maybe be up to 4480-4490.
In most SP environments I've worked it, its standard to set the mpls backbone mpls mtu to 9100 or 9192 at install time to remove any issues with the backbone mtu.
Mpls mtu only affects handling of labeled packets, not unlabeled packets.

  • IS IS, CLNS

    Hi everybody
I am new to ISIS.  I am trying to understand how ISIS routes CLNS routes ( system address associated with the router)
Once I understand, how isis routes CLNS, i will move to integrated ISIS . For this discussion, please consider only clns routes i.e isis not integrated isis
    This is what i understand.
    L1 routing logic:
If the area match, check ISIS routing table for L1 routes.
If the area does not match, send the packet to nearest l2 router.
    Please consider the following example:
    R1(L1)---------R3(L1/L2)---------------R3(L1)
    R1 config:
    clns routing
    interface Serial1/1
     no ip address
     serial restart-delay 0
     clns router isis
    router isis
     net 49.0001.1111.1111.1111.00
     is-type level-1
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++
    R2 config:
    clns routing
    interface Serial1/1
     no ip address
     serial restart-delay 0
     clns router isis
    router isis
     net 49.0002.1111.1111.1111.00
     is-type level-1
    ++++++++++++++++++
    R3 config:
    clns routing
    interface Serial1/1
     no ip address
     serial restart-delay 0
     clns router isis
    interface Serial1/2
     no ip address
     serial restart-delay 0
     clns router isis
    router isis
     net 49.0001.3333.3333.3333.00
(left to default which is L1/L2)
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
R1 knows R3 as L1 not as L2  because I do not see any mention of  L2  on R1, so if R1 has to send packets  outside its area, how will it reach L2 (R3) when it is not even listed anywhere.
R1#show isis database detail ( understand level1 is for its area ,kinda like ospf totally stubby area)
    IS-IS Level-1 Link State Database:

      Metric: 10         IS R2.00

In short where is the information on R1 that instructs R1 to send packets to L2 ( R3) If they are destined for out of area addresses.

    thanks
    have a great day

    Hi Daniel,
If i understand correctly, "clns-mtu" value is used by both CLNS and IS-IS. For CLNS, this is used to determine the maximum sized network layer PDU that can be sent over that interface (this includes payload and L3 header). PDUs which are larger will be segmented (ISO speak for fragmentation) to clns-mtu size.
For IS-IS, clns-mtu has both a direct and indirect usage.
Directly, clns-mtu controls the maximum size PDU IS-IS will send on that interface. This directly affects the size of IIHs if hello padding is enabled (which is the default setting).
Indirectly, clns-mtu needs to be greater than or equal to the maximum size LSP that any IS in the area/domain may generate. So clns-mtu must be>= lsp-mtu for all links in the rea/domain which are used forflooding of LSPs."
Now, in IOS XR, you can't change the clns mtu, but you can change the lsp mtu.  Unlike IOS, where you can change the clns mtu.  The clns mtu will affect the hello packets, and the lsp mtu will not so that is a difference.  So you can keep using the clns mtu on the IOS router.
The 'lsp-mtu' option in the IS-IS configuration now affects the size of CSN(Complete Sequence Number) and PSN (Partial Sequence Number) PDUs.  The size of these PDUs will be limited to the value specified by 'lsp-mtu'.  If 'lsp-mtu'is set to a value larger than the CLNS MTU of an interface running IS-IS, the CLNS MTU will be used instead.
    Hope that helps.

  • My 2 notebooks running XP will no longer detect the BEFW11S4 WAP, what can I do?

My 2 notebooks running XP will no longer detect the BEFW11S4 WAP, what can I do?
The connections just stopped yesterday. Both laptops work OK when connected by ethernet cables and my main PC running XP64 connected also by ethernet is not affected.
Both laptops can see my neighbour's wireless network and worked OK with my son-in-laws network last night when I took them over to his house.
Can I assume that the "wireless component has died?
Any recommendations for a direct updated replacement?
I'm currently connected to NTL broadband but may at sometime switch to Sky broadband in the future but I understand that I would not be able to do this with my NTL phone line.

    Thanks for the comments Charrie21,
    SSID Broadcast is enabled,
Of the 3 leds on the front left:
    WLAN ACT is not illuminated
WLAN Link is illuminated [According to the instruction because it is connected to a cable modem],
    POWER is illuminated.
Of the 3 leds on the front right:
    LINK is illuminated,
    ACT is not illuminated,
    Diag in not illuminated.
The router has been reset  several times.
SSID has been changed several times
Channel number has been changed several times
WAP was previously 64BIt and has been changed to 128Bit
Firmware version is the same date as currently on the Linksys web sute for this model.
I am thinking the "wireless" component is dead.

  • How to decide the size of MTU when writing an interface ?

I have very little knowledge about network interface. But I want to write a network interface. But I am not getting how the MTU for an interface is decided depending upon the network physical capabilities. Like :
    localhost has 1500 bytes
But this size is not enough for high-speed networks which exist now a days. I am not getting how this size of MTU is actually affecting the network. And how we can find the optimal MTU for any network.

This depends on what exactly do you mean by 'network interface'? Firmware for an NIC? a device driver for an NIC? Or you you mean an application API? And if so, for UDP or TCP?
If UDP, all you need to know is that the practical limit on a datagram that has to go through routers is 534 bytes.
If TCP, you don't have to worry about MTU in the slightest.

  • Significance of loopback MTU

So the default MTU for the loopback interface is 16 KB. And apparently this is in fact changeable, or at least ifconfig acts as though it is.
Is there any situation where changing the MTU of the loopback interface might be useful? e.g. could tuning it up or down affect the performance of a local proxy? I'm just kind of curious about why this setting exists.

You piqued my interest, but this is all I could find on a quick Google... Seems to be since the loopback interface doesn't connect to an ethernet network, there are no packets or fragmentation limits, in which case I guess it depends on the available buffers or whatever the kernel uses internally to transfer the "packets" as to what the optimum size would be.
(Warning: I don't know enough about the kernel to stand by anything I've said in the above paragraph )

    16436 = = (16 * 1024) + 20 + 20 + 12
Remember that the lo device is not an 802 media - so there is no MAC address and encapsulation. The flags above indicate there is no checksum. I suppose the extra 52 bytes are sufficient to create the IP header with a 16KiB paymoad.

If we echo 1 to ‘/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_no_pmtu_disc’ then MTU dynamic shaping will be turned off and the machine will not send data packets less than the maximum if it has data to fill it. This is some times useful when trying to simulate devices on a network that do not have dynamic MTU built in or disabled.

  • Linksys BEFW11S4 v2 game issues

    Here is my spcific problem:
I am now connected through a port in the back of the linksys BEFW11S4 v2 because I know wireless will not work on this game. I want to play the folowing game: Asheron's Call:Throne of Destiny but when I load up the game it seems to stop when loading the Update blue bar. I have tried fowarding ports (9000-9013) and all but it still does not work. Am I missing anything or is this game not able to work with this router.. or what? I am really running out of options here, someone please help! Thank-you Linksys Comunity Members!

  • Cisco VPN 3.6.3b and BEFW11S4 v2 connection issue

I'm hoping someone can help with this problem.  I am able to connect to my employers VPN server, but cannot access any of the shared areas.  I've found some documentation that may point to an MTU issue, but adjusting the value on the laptop from 1400 down to 1250 to 1200 doesn't work.  I've tried forcing the value to 1250 using the Router Filter settings with no luck.  IPSEC pass through is enabled on the router as is MAC filtering.
I've tested the VPN while on-campus and I have no problems.  I also have no problems accessing the internet through the Linksys router with VPN turned off.
    Any ideas?
    Configuration:
    DELL Precision M70 running  XP
    Time Warner RoadRunner
    Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem
Linksys BEFW11S4 v2 (using wireless connection) FW 1.45.10
    Cisco VPN 3.6.3b

Ok thanks so much. I will try again.
My company's IT guys aren't  being very helpful, won't return my calls, emails, etc. and don't appear to be giving me clear instructions on what I believe to be a standard request.  Not sure why .
We can't get in as administrators, they have to do it for us, and they are not timely in requests like these.  We are a large company (over 10K employees) and the last time I tried this was with our email client and and Cisco VPN, bundled together. It was a disaster and I don't recommend it.  So this way was supposed to be easier for the user, and for them to help us with questions.  Oh well.
I will at least try what you have suggested, and when I get back to work I will see if I can get their public ip address, and see if they will check on the port.
I will post back to see if the suggestions from the above post worked.
Many thanks again for your help!

  • BEFW11S4 problem with XP

I have a BEFW11S4 v2 that I've been using at home for a number of years to support two wired computers upstairs, a wireless one downstairs and the occasional transient.  So far, I've not had any problems with wireless connections.
Originally, both wired systems were Win98 and worked flawlessly.  When one of those systems was upgraded to XP Pro it started having problems losing the connection to the router.  Attempting to reconnect using the Windows repair button or manually requesting a new IP address fail.  I would have to shut down the XP system, shut down the router, then power them up, router first, to get everything running again.   Since my daughter took the XP box to college, it wasn't all that big a deal.  However, I have since upgraded the other system to XP Pro SP2 and it now has exactly the same problem.  XP is current with all patches and the BEFW11S4 v2 has the most recent firmware.
The system seems to remain connected as long as it's in use, but if left unused for more an 24 hours it usually loses the connection and must be rebooted.
Any ideas what's different between 98 and XP that may cause this?
    I appreciate any suggestions.
    Mike

I'm having a similar problem - router has been working well for the last several years with two systems - W98 and WXP Pro. Added a second/new XP Pro system and now router hangs and must be rebooted anywhere from every 5 minutes to several hours when new XP Pro system is powered on. Still no problems at all with either of the other two systems. I've checked the MTU value and it is correct. Any solutions out there for this problem? I can supply config information if that would help identify and fix the problem.

  • BEFW11S4 v4 Disconnecting Problems

I'm having a few problems recently with my BEFW11S4 v4 router. I upgraded its firmware finally after owning it for about 5 years. I did it correctly like it said on the page. Yet, ever since I've been getting disconnected randomly and its all the time. Something like 5-10 times a day. I'm pretty sure its not my broadband modem doing it too, cause I just unplug the router and plug it back in and it works fine again. Any solotions? Or should I just dish out a few bucks and get a new one?

sO,,it has been verified that the router could be the fault because through the modem you can get online fine right?
since you have already upgraded the firmware of your router..try logging on to the router interface and lower down its MTU to 1400...

  • MTU error (Path too long) with linux-3.6.2

I have a PC running 24/7, with an OpenVPN connection up all the time as well. I also have a (shared) ssh connection open, through said vpn. Every night an rsync job is ran, to backup some stuff over said VPN, through a shared ssh connection.
Starting a few days ago (Oct 17) I've had trouble with this, as in after rsync started, it would not be able to finish its job, getting "interrupted" (or, hanged) quite early on.
Looking in the journal, I can see error messages such as those (right after rsync starts, which happens at 02:23) :
    Oct 17 02:23:05 arch.local openvpn@xxx[552]: read UDPv4 [EMSGSIZE Path-MTU=1460]: Message too long (code=90)

This eventually led to the ssh connection timing out, and the rsync job failing to complete.
Also, restarting OpenVPN seems to "fix" the issue, without the need to change any settings.
That's when I realized this started happening since upgrading the kernel to 3.6.2, so I then downgraded to 3.5.6 (Oct 19) and, since then, haven't had any issue.
So I'm thinking this is some kind of bug/regression in the 3.6 kernel, but I'm not really sure what to do now.
Note: I see 3.6.3 is out (and in testing), but only looked at the changelog so far (and didn't see anything that seem related to this issue?).

Thanks for your answers (and sorry about the delay).
I'm not sure how to read the error message actually, but I use default settings and `ip addr show` reports a MTU of 1500 indeed. Also, (on linux-3.6.2) I tried using OpenVPN's --mtu-test option to see what it would say (even though early on I never have a problem), and here it is:
NOTE: Empirical MTU test completed [Tried,Actual] local->remote=[1541,1541] remote->local=[1541,1541]
I'm nor really sure what it means, that I could (should?) use 1541 instead of 1500? And if so, how come it says I could go higher while I get errors with Path-MTU=1460 ? And actually, right before this result I do have a couple of those Path-MTU errors in the log, so I really don't know what to make of it, could it fail at 1460 but work higher? Does that even make sense?
I still don't know if it's really an MTU issue or not, since the kernel 3.5.6 isn't affected. Anyhow, I'll probably install 3.6.3 and see, hopefully it'll be back to normal.... if not I guess I'll have to try and set an MTU, though I'm not sure to what.
Also, would that require the OpenVPN server to have its MTU set that way as well (Since currently it also uses default settings, so MTU 1500) ?

  • Everything looks fine, but can't browse internet (BEFW11S4)

My BEFW11S4 v4 won't connect to internet anymore.
    Firmware is updated (v4 1.52.03).
Tried to turn off/on both modem and router.
I did a hard reset by pressing the reset button on the back of the router.
The only setting I changed after the reset was Internet Setup. Set connection to PPPOe, entered my username and password, saved.
In Status>Router page, Login status goes 'connected' after a few seconds. Internet IP Address changes from 0.0.0.0 to 200.132.....
In Status>Local Network>DHC Client Table I can see my machine is there. I can connect to the router either by Ethernet or wireless.
But I cannot visit any website. The browser always says 'server not found'.
If I plug may Macbook directly to the modem and configure a PPPOe connection (using same ID/password), then I it works fine.
Any tips would be appreciated. Could this be a hardware problem and I'd better replace my router? It's about 8 years old now...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thanks for your reply.
I changed MTU from 'disabled' to 'enabled'  then set its size to 1400. Nothing changed.
Then I tried to ping the IP address (I'm on a Mac, the procedure is different but I believe the result is the same) and that was the result (IP address partially replaced by 'XXX' in this message).:
    MacBookProi7:~ durval$ ping 200.232.XXX.247

    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.722/133.468/6235.153/899.644 ms
I understand this is the expected answer: no packet loss.
I did not try disabling Proxy Settings on Internet Explorer, because I do not use IE (all settings were done with Firefox 7 Mac).
Then I borrowed another router from a friend – a Linksys WRT54GS – and it worked fine!
Is there any other settings I should try?

Here's hoping you can help me - I've done everything possible - believe me!  When using my Linksys BEFW11S4 router with my VPN s/w (MS Remote Access - MSRA) .. my VPN is not stable and drops consistently every 10/15/20 minutes.  It is getting very very frustrating!! I believe MSRA is configured for IPSec encryption.  Right now I am trying to undertsand - what is 'IPSec Passthrough' enabled/disabled mean?  This is enabled on the Linksys config page - Security tab/VPN Passthrough section.  I am wondering if this may be contributing to my problem.  Please advise.
When I say I have done everything, I mean this:
wireless laptop is configured to use static ip
wireless router has been upgraded to latest firmware
MTU size has been reset to 1365
    port forwarding/triggering has been setup
    no firewall S/W
Nothing is working.  Even though the wireless router is probably 3+ years old, it is hard for me to believe it is the H/W.  Someone recommended I buy a NetGear wireless router.  I'm trying to give this one more shot!
Please help if you can .. many thanks!!  Rachel (frustrated in CA)

    Hello again,
Yes I was on DHCP - yet Linksys Support suggested I go with assigning Static IP, so I did that and it still isn't working well - dropping consistently every 10 - 15 minutes.  Linksys Support somewhat "guaranteed" me the Static IP assignment would work - and it doesn't.
In any case, yes I am accessing my VPN wireless - via my wireless laptop.  It is my work VPN S/W.  I believe it is built on MSRA - Microsoft Remote Access.
In any case, I talked to a colleague this AM - and I think I've come to the conclusion it is time to buy another router; this one too old to work with new laptop.  He recommended the Linksys WRT54G product.
Unless you have any other recommendations and/or troubleshooting ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rachel

  • BEFW11S4 V2, Internet goes slow out of the sudden.

Now, I had good internet speed for about 2 years and everything was fine, but about 2 weeks ago,  I restarted my computer and did a power cycle on my router and modem. Then, I put all my settings back on, and connected. Out of the sudden, my speed goes down into about 3 kb/s downloading speed. The sites take about 5 minutes each to open up, and it's really annoying. Can someone please help me? The linksys guys on the phone couldn't help me at all... I have a Westell Modem and a BEFW11S4 V2 Modem.
I tried doing everything such as messing with the beacon interval, RTS Threshold, and MTU and stuff like that.
Also, the connection is also slow when wired.
I have DSL by the way.
The modem couldn't be blocking out the speed because 2 weeks ago my internet was fast and good.

Please, if anyone can help me... It's just I got a school project to do soon and I can barely do it with this kind of connection.

  • Streaming audio and/or video crashes your router BEFW11s4 firmware problem

Ok!!! Apparently some of us have had the problem where trying to stream audio and/or video can cause the Linsys BEFW11S4 to crash, where only a power down and re-up will retore communication. Changing the MTU size has been suggested ad-nausium. I hope this works for you all, because it worked for me.
Apparently the latest firmware is the problem. I just installed an older firmware version and problem solved (1.50.14).
    ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/befw11s4_v4_v1.50.14_code.bin
So, looks like maybe Linksys could hopefully issue another firmware update that fixes this (we hate having to use old firmware... trading off one bug fix for other multiple bugs that may rear their ugly head later on).

    Hi all -
This looks like this will fix the issue I have with my router. I'm willing to try it, anyway.
My question is pretty basic: What do I do after I download the file?
    Thanks, Kate
