Beginneer to J2EE, which book do you recommend me?

Hi mates!
I have a lot of experience in C++ and Java SE, but I never used J2EE.
I would like to create an app that uses web interfaces, data bases (persistence) and a multithreaded server. I guess that is possible with J2EE, but no idea about Hibernate/Spring/JSF/Beans/WebFlow....
What book do you recommend me to learn about that kind of things?
Thank you very much for your help, I appreciate it a lot.

I'd recommend to start with the free book [Core servlets 2nd edition|http://pdf.coreservlets.com] to learn about servlets & JSPs. In the mean time I'd find a good tutorial about JDBC and learn how to do database actions with Java.
When you know that, the next step in my opinion would be to get the book [Enterprise Javabeans 3.0|http://www.amazon.com/Enterprise-JavaBeans-3-0-Richard-Monson-Haefel/dp/059600978X] , as it is still the best EJB book I know of.
Finally if you want to go for the full package, I'd read [Pro EJB 3: Java Persistence API|http://www.amazon.com/Pro-EJB-Java-Persistence-API/dp/1590596455] or even its newer second edition, [Pro JPA 2|http://www.amazon.com/Pro-JPA-Mastering-Persistence-Technology/dp/1430219564] to stay up to date with the times. I haven't read the second edition yet, but the first one was an excellent book about the Java Persistence API.
What remains would be a book about JavaServer Faces, if you want to use that as the view technology. I cannot really recommend a book about that.

  • Which book do you recommend for 'MySQL 5 Certified Associate Exam' exam?

Hello, this is my first post. I am familiar with SQL and I use it occasionally, but I decided to get certified. Which book and material would you recommend me studying to sit the 1Z0-870 exam? Online and college courses are too expensive for me and I happen to do better studying at my own pace. Thanks.

Thanks. For certification purposes: MySQL 5.0 Certification Study Guide [Paperback] ISBN-13: 978-0672328121 is still probably still good (unless the topics have been updated and I haven't noticed), though perhaps dated compared to the more recent MySQL versions.
... That said the 1z0-870 for MySQL is relatively expensive and over simple for what it is (IMHO); and it may be worth considering going direct for the OCP.
For using the more recent version of MySQL in practice additional books/material may be important for on the job in practice.

  • Which Case Do you Recommend?

I purchased a Black Nano for my husband for Christmas. I would like to order him a case soon to have for Christmas. I have looked at the Agent 18 Case. Which one would you recommend? I know that there is a certain way that you put on this case. Also, does it take away from the black? Please give me your recommendations for a case. Thanks

    Hi,
I'd have to say that I'd recommend the iSkin Duo Nano case without a second thought. I have one for my iRiver H140 as well and its never been out of it since installed. Same with the nano.
They are beautifully made, have 2 layers of protection, come in some cool colours and have screen/click wheel protectors.
Its changed the way I use my nano. Before I was always a little nervous about putting it in a bag or pocket. Now I don't worry.
There a belt clip for jogging and all 'holes' are covered when not in use. The only access is to the hold switch.
The only issue, as with all cases, is that if you have an iPod dock then it will no longer fit.
If silicone is your weapon of choice then look no further.
    Hope this is of use.

  • Hello, I am interested in buying a new Macbook Pro but want to run Adobe CS package.  Which computer do you recommend?

Hello, I am interested in buying a new Macbook Pro but want to run the latest Adobe CS package.  Which computer do you recommend for best speed and perfromance?

Depending on the software you'll use - I doubt you'll be an expert on After Effects and use Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver like a pro (you may be an exception) - I have a 13" Macbook Pro simply because the 15" lacks the portability of the smaller size - the Retina 15" is alot lighter and if you can afford it - go for it!
I bought the Macbook Pro and replaced the 4GB of RAM with 8GB of RAM and replaced the HDD with an m4 SSD from Crucial. The SSD really makes a difference in app start up speeds, loading times and bootup speeds. The RAM ensures apps operate smoothly and everything is snappy. Since getting an SSD, I would say the performance of Photoshop and Illustrator is vastly improved. I can have both open whilst surfing the web, checking my email and even using Dreamweaver every once in a while. Multitasking is great.
To conclude, depedning on your price range, buying a £999 Macbook Pro and swapping the HDD for an SSD and the 4GB of RAm to 8GB, will ensure better performance than both 15" Models. However, buying a 15" Model and maxing out the specs, would beat the performance of a maxed out 13".
I have a 13" and it runs faster than it was when I first purchased it last year. Photoshop opens in 2/3 seconds and performance is great.
    Hope this helps.
P.S. If you have the money, get the 15" Retina. If not, max out the 13" if you still want portability. Otherwise, get the 15" and max that out if you feel performance is poor.
The reason I say Retina, is because the maxed ram and SSD is already installed and saves alot of hassle aswell as the slimmer design and lighter weight.

  • For editing video which MacBook do you recommend me?

Hello. For editing video which MacBook do you recommend me? Thanks.

Unless you're too delicate and can't handle the weight, a regular MacBookPro with the Widescreen/Anti-glare and 2.6GHz processor options (gets you 1GB VRAM as well):
Then upgrade by yourself to 16GB RAM and either a 7200RPM HDD or an SSD for substantially less than what Apple charges and you will have a screamer.

How recently did you switch?  If it's less than 60 days, then Verizon simply reinstates your previous account.  The fact that you were on the EDGE plan and mailed the devices back, and they apparently are somewhere in the system, could cause complications, and it might just work out that you just go back on the same plan and they set you up with the same devices.  I'm not sure how it will go - but since you are still being billed for the devices...

  • I know this may be very subjective. What book do you recommend to learn Photoshop CC 2014?

I recently acquired program. Signed up at a local community college to take an on line beginner's course. What reference book do you like?

Taking the college class is a good step. It will bring you up to speed much quicker than learning on your own. Though I never discourage learning on your own as that is how I did it.
As for books, there are a huge slew of books available. Searching amazon is a good place to start.
To be honest though, most of my training came from videos so even if your not a big fan of video tutorials, don't rule them out completely. There are times when they can show what a book can not.

  • What books do you recommend?

I started using Photoshop literally years ago, but then stopped using it for about 3 years. I purchased Photoshop Elements 4.0 and have started diving into it again.
I have the basics (and if you watched some of my previous posts), I have developed some standard workflows etc...
I just picked it up by playing (not really reading).
Can you recommend a book (and/or magazines) that will help me go to the next level.
I think something that will also teach fundamental photo theory such as "curves" and such would be helpful - because I don't understand that stuff.
I just know how to play with levels and the shadow/highlight dialogs to get the pictures I want.
Any help or suggestions would be great!

I ended up getting the Missing Manual and also The Hidden Powers of PSE 4 by Lynch. I am about 1/2 way through the Missing Manual - and it is GREAT.
I didn't realize all the things I wasn't using in the program. Some I should have (obvious) and some that weren't obvious.
I installed the Lynch CD but haven't read the book to understand it.
I also picked up Rick Sammon's Guide to Digital Photography that covers a lot of general imaging and photography concepts that help fill in some fundamentals... I haven't really cracked that open but will let you know when I do (if it's worth it).
    Some tips I already learned:
    a) I never realized that the Hidden Tag will hide (by default) pictures.... when you tag - they don't hide until you press F5 or exit and restart the organizer. (DUH!)
    b) A GREAT explanation of how to use tags vs collections. Really helped.
    c) Great explanation of what to explore (experiment with) and when. I never really played that much with blending because I didn't understand it and I solved the problem other ways, but now I found many tricks that make simple changes easy. For example, duplicate any layer and choose multiply or screen. You just increased/decreased about 1 F-Stop. Quick and easy. Many others.
    d) Best explanation of all the strengths and weaknesses of the various selection tools.
Well I got to get back to reading :) ... I should have RTFM or is it RTFHM (hidden manual) a long time ago...

  • I'm an architect looking forward to purchasing a new Mac. Which model do you recommend and why?

I currently own a MacBook Pro 13 inch model (late-2011)
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
I'm an architecture student in my last semester, looking forward to buying a desktop Mac (for current and future use as a professional).
Sadly, for us architects we are limited with some mayor Architecture Programs such as 3Ds Max & Revit (both of which I use frecuently and have to use in a PC )
I have tried runing them in Parallels (in my MacBook Pro), but the result is slow and sluggish... so I plan on purchasing a new desktop computer as I believe these have more capacity to run this programs.
I would like to avoid using Boot Camp (hate having to restart the computer frequently) so if a Mac with be it Parallels/VMWare Fusion/CrossOver can do the job EFFICENTLY I would be happy.
So, which Mac model do you recommend for this case?
I'm undecided and would like some advice from you guys.
I'm not so limited on budget, but of course low cost would be appreciated.
If you could give some specific specs as RAM, Processor model, etc. that would help me more.
Im guessing the Power Mac is the best one...but just checking other opinions and answers.
    THANKS!

Why not if you are going to run Windows pick up a PC with what you need?
The new mac pro 2013 won't be out for couple months and figure more time for software, even Fusion etc to catch up.
A VM is never going to be the same as running directly on the hardware natively.
The new Mac Pro though should be able to handle what you throw at it but even support for Windows could take time.
And looking at a new Mac operating system 10.9 Maverick. Windows 8.1 in same time frame.
If you do use a VM, install Windows natively to begin with and then attach the VM to point to it. There are times you need or want to run or apply updates natively.
The Mac has never had support for multiple high end graphic cards, no support for SLI and CrossFire-X, no 8-pin power connectors, if your software needs.
Mac Pro 2013 product page - new design and up to 12-cores and FirePro (2) GPU if you want to burn a pile of $$s.

Thanks.  Hadn't heard of it. ?  Is there any concern installing this free program on my Mac.    Have you used it?  Apart from being free is there any other advantage of Parallels and VMfusion. ?
Virtual Box is safe and well developed, it offers similar or identical features to the paid competition, it may be a little less polished but that's all.
Download and try it out, nothing to lose (except time).

  • Water block for a reference MSI HD7970, which block do you recommend?

    Hi,
Just bought a new MSI HD7970 reference model. As the reference fan is very loud I will be buying me a water block for this awesome card.
Can you recommend me a nice waterblock? I live in Sweden and therefore it's a plus if I can buy it from here. Otherwise, buying from inside the EU would be nice.
I've looked some at the EK. I don't really like the design so much, and I've also heard of some leakage problems with EK?
Other block I've looked at is the heatkiller. I have these on my dual HD5970 and like the performance and design of these.
So, if you could give me your advice on a nice water block, I would really appreciate it!
I'm really new to water cooling so I doesn't know much about what alternatives there is.
Here is a picture of my recent setup with HD5970 in crossfire with heatkiller-blocks.

An idea would be the Swiftech Komodo-HD7900 series full cover VGA waterblock: http://www.swiftech.com/KOMODO-HD7900.aspx.
Very great is the aquagrATIx HD 7970 block but could be hard to get outside Germany: http://shop.aquacomputer.de/product_info.php?language=en&products_id=2848
Alternatively it would still be EK. Unlike you heard the EKs can't be that bad as it is the factory pre-installed block of PowerColor's Water Cooled LCS Radeon HD7970

  • XML = Swing GUI, which framework would you recommend?

    Hi,
I'm looking for a framework that translates an XML description to a Swing GUI.
There're a lot available, e.g. gui4J, swixml, Thinlet, XUL, XULUX, Jelly, SwingML
    Can you recommend one?
Are there any drawbacks I should be aware of from using such a framework? How about performance?
    Many thanks

  • First Mac ever (former PC person).  What book would you recommend ("MacBook for Dummies" ?) for someone like me who wants to get up to speed quickly ?

I am looking for a book - (maybe something from the "Dummies" series) that will get me up to speed quickly.
I expect to use the MacBook for word processing, email and watching and downloading videos.
                            Bob

The essential book is Amazon.com: Macintosh Bible, The (8th Edition)
Wow, Macintosh Bible goes back to 2001 - not sure how "essential" the information is in 2012.  Happy for you to come back to me on that Kappy and justify your recommendation!
I recommend 'Mac OS X Lion - The Missing Manual' by David Pogue:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mac-OS-Lion-Missing-Manuals/dp/1449397492/ref=sr_1_1?ie= UTF8&qid=1328642593&sr=8-1
The books in the 'for Dummies' series are quite good too but the 'missing manual' book is more thorough and goes into greater depth.
