Beginner Audio Question

I am working with an interview and ambient sounds to overlay onto photographs in Premiere Pro CC. I was cutting the interview audio and placing it in the timeline from the work station window. When I play the audio back in the timeline the man's voice is much deeper than it is in the work station, which is producing the interviewee's natural voice. What am I doing wrong with my audio transfer into the timeline?
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.
Can you do the full narration recording in Adobe Audition?
If so, then Save_As a PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit, and Import that file into PrPro.
If you cannot, then it's probably time to address possible HDD issues, like formatting, available free-space, etc.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Can't edit multiple tracks - plus 2 easy audio questions

I have a sequence with 1 video track and 6 stereo audio tracks. I set an in and an out point. The area on the clips in the timeline between the two edit points highlights, I hit delete. Normally, the tracks between the points should disappear as the two segments come together and form one great edit.
But all the tracks do not highlight and edit. The video track and stereo audio tracks 3+4 and 5+6 highlight and LIFT off. But audio tracks 1+2 do not highlight or edit. And the whole sequence doesn't close together where the edit should be.
Only way I have been able to overcome this is to use the razor blade tool, cut each track individually. Highlight them all, and then hit delete.
This didn't use to be the way. FCP used to edit through one track, 3 tracks or all tracks, no problem.
Two audio questions. How do you stop the waveforms from drawing onto the clips in the timeline, in order to speed up FCP?
How do you get the audio in captured clips to be a Stereo Pair, from the outset?
Thanks to all you who help!

Is it usual for FCP to bog down on a 4 minute piece when audio wave forms are turned on??
    <
No. Should run fine. You get up into 6-12 audio tracks, FCP gets all moody and pouty.
But it depends on your system's capabilities and how well you have chosen your sequence settings.
Audio waveforms n FCP are a cruel joke compared to many other NLEs. Often easier to leave them off in the timeline, use the waveform in the Viewer and set markers for hooks in the audio tracks.

  • Beginner font questions

These are some beginner font questions if someone has the time/patience.
I've never paid much attention to fonts over the years, never installed
any other than those that might have come with applications. Early on,
15 years ago or so, I settled on Palatino and I've stayed with it for
most docs (Word 5.1a and now Word vX) and often for other apps (Safari,
    Now).
I just upgraded to Tiger (10.4.4) and I use Word vX.
    Questions:
    1. I gather from looking at Font Book that when I'm using Palatino in
Tiger that OS X is getting it from my OS 9 System folder for Classic.
It does not look like Palatino is in any other locations including MS
Office vX. Does that make sense?
    2. I always thought that Palatino was a very basic, always available
    font. Not so?
    3. If I decide to stop using Classic, and I'm close to that time, can I
transfer those fonts to OS X? If so, to which location is best.
    4. And are the same fonts used for printing and screen? In other words
back in pre OS X days I thought some fonts came in screen versions and
print versions but my memory is hazy on that. Not only that.
Thank you for any education or links for info.

Yes, you can just put it in Users/username/Library/Fonts (or Library/Fonts for all users).

  • Beginner Audio post question - stereo music recording

In a normal recording session, each instrument is recorded separately. So, i imagine all the effects and processes are designed for single-instrument tracks. How do you handle it when an entire band is recorded onto a single stereo track? Are any of the effects made for that purpose? What typical operations and rules apply? Is there some guide available and is it possible to, for example, boost certain instruments leaving the others alone?

This is getting slightly away from Audition but...
Mic placement depends quite a lot on the style of music and location....and, of course, the types of mics available to you.  Without knowing what you're doing exactly it's hard to be specific, but I'd suggest you Google "coincident pair" and "spaced omni".  Between those two (and variations you'll find when Googling) you'll cover a lot of options!
Then you put the mics in one pair and a mixer feed in the other and combine them later.
You mention the "house board" so it's likely safe to assume that we're talking something amplified.  Being frank, this is difficult to do a good job on with a simple stereo technique.
I'm often the guy running the "house board" (well, theatre board in my case) and I can sort of explain why the feeds you get don't sound right when recorded.  The mix being done for Front of House is designed to be heard in situ.  Instruments that are loud by themselves (drums for example, or guitar if the guy has a big amp and multi speaker cabinet) are generally kept very low in the mix.  Quieter things (vocals, electronic keyboards, etc.) are turned up in the mix to do battle with the drums and electric guitar.  This can sound okay live, but gives a very uneven sound when you hear JUST the recording.
Depending how cooperative the FOH guy is, there might be things you can play with, even with your limited tracks.  If he has spare aux outputs (and everything is run through the board) it's possible to do a passable mix using pre-fade auxes.  This lets you tweak things to a rough balance even if you can't ride levels constantly through the set.  If there are even more auxes available, I'd think of splitting things up a bit:  maybe vocals in one track, drum kit (mixed) in another, guitars in the third and keyboards in the last  That's obviously just an example since I don't know what you're recording!  Obviously, this takes a lot of cooperation from the guy mixing--so if you get a lazy grumpy old git like me, you're in trouble!.
Having said all that, you have to manage your expectations a bit.  A quick and dirty recording using any of the techniques above is never going to sound like (or give you the mix options of) recording 30 or 40 totally separate tracks and spending days on the mix later.  However, some okay results are possible.

  • Easy way to add more audiotracks??? + Environment midi/audio question???

    Hi!
Let's say, when I open a new project I have standard 24 audio tracks.
But when recording I see that I will need more, is there an easy and fast way to add more tracks?
As I see it now, I Have to run the Logic Setup Assistent, add more tracks (let's say 40). Reopen the project, go in the environment, create a new audio object for every track I want to add, double click it and assign the correct track to 'channel'. If I need to add 10 more tracks I have to go over these last steps 10 times. Am I missing some handy quick trick here?
Also, the second part of my question:
when I open the environment window, sometimes it only shows "midi" and the "GS instrument drum mapped" and some other times it shows "audio" and an "overview of my mixer". This seems to happen at random and I don't know why. The mixer view is what I want (especially when I need to add tracks as mentioned before), but when I get the midi view I don't know what to do to get the audio/mixer view. Any help?
    Powermac G5 dual 2,3 - 1,5Gig ram   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Logic 7.1.1 / M audio Ozone / BCF2000 / Drumkat 3.8

    Ok,
There is a way so you wont have to do the 10 setups.
Run the Setup Assistant and when it asks how many
audio tracks you want, always tell it more than you
will possibly need. I use 101. I know I will probably
never use that many but they are already and waiting
in case I do need more. This way you dont have to do
anything except go to the track menu and select create
new or double click the arear below the last
track and what ever track is highlighted, a exact duplicate
will appear. Then you just click and hold on it to make it
whatever kind of track you need from the menu that appears.
This first answer takes care of the second question. Since you
dont need to go into the enviroment to hook up new tracks.
Just so you know if you click and hold on the name of the layer
Midi, instruments, clicks and ports or whatever another menu
will appear letting you choose what layer you want to go to.
    This is the easy way!

  • T410s/T410/T510 DP- HDMI, audio questions, survey

    Hi,
after all the confusion concerning DisplayPort-audio and the T-series, I decided to find out for myself and test it at my local Lenovo dealer.
As my dealer had not a single HDMI and audio capable output device in his shop, I brought my own Medion MD 20226 LCD TV, which has 2 HDMI-in ports.
The idea was to use a 2m DisplayPort->HDMI-cable provided by the dealer in order to connect the T410s in question to my little TV.
Background: Due to the misleading information from Lenovo concerning the last generation T400s/T400/T500 models and their audio over DisplayPort issue (no audio at all), I expected to get a picture without any problems but that I would need to figure out how to enable the sound by changing some settings inside Windows 7.
What happened: Actually neither me nor my dealer were able to get ANYTHING out of the DisplayPort, when using the DisplayPort->HDMI-cable. There was NEITHER video NOR audio!
I should point out that at the time being my dealer only had T410s models without the (maybe) switchable NVidia graphics.
Another point that I want to emphasize is that, after 45 minutes of trying everything we could to make it work, we switched to the T510 that was standing right beside the T410s in his show room. Unfortunately I was too confused to ask what kind of graphics setup this machine had, but the result was the same: no video, no audio at the TV.
As it is apparent that there are quite a lot of confused Lenovo customers out there that have similar questions:
I HEREBY FORMALLY ASK FOR A DETAILED AND IN-DEPTH INVESTIGATION/CLARIFICATION OF POSSIBLE DP->HDMI, DP-AUDIO AND DP->HDMI-AUDIO ISSUES WITH THE CURRENT T410s/T410/T510 SERIES (all combinations of graphics cards).
Of course I think that it would be best if one of the Lenovo engineers would take care of that in one of the Lenovo blogs.
But until then, it might be a good starting point to ask those of us, who already have a T410s/T410/T510.
So I just start right away:
    MODEL:                   T410s (NUK39GE / 2912-39G)
    used GPU:              Intel GMA 5 / QM57
    DP->DP-video:       not tested
    DP->DP-audio:      not tested
    DP->HDMI-video:  tested->not working
    DP->HDMI-audio: tested->not working
As I said, I was only able to test it at my local Lenovo dealer and I gave up after around 1 hour of testing. So it might be, that someone who has more time and resources (different adaptors) might be able to get it running.
So to all of you out there with a new Tx10(s), please take the time, find your next HDMI-TV and try it.
And to Lenovo: as long as there is no official statement concerning this, I will keep asking for an official response ;-) (and THIS time, don't blame the chipset, as the new Intel-Calpella has all the HD-video/audio goodness one could ask for: wiki article on Intel Calpella and its DP features).
    Thanks for reading all this!

  • Bluetooth / audio question

Hi Guys - i have a question which may be more related to a particular application http://www.sonomawireworks.com/forums/viewforum.php?id=2 but seeing as no-one there seems to be able t help me (and it may in fact be a Mac, rather than 'app' related issue - I thought i'd try here)... ok, so here's my problem....
ight, I downloaded RW from Line 6 a while back (version X / Mac OSX). All was going well - great app then....(and this may be just coincidence) I tried to pair my Vaio with the Mac (unsuccessfully as it happens). After having done this, when booting up (which now takes a while) I get an alert saying
    "Bluetooth Audio Failed
There was an error connecting to your headset / ignore / stop using your headset"
Irrespective of the option I select, when RW does eventually fires up, there is no audio. I can see the app is playing OK (the master dials are registering) - but no output. Same problem even if I turn off Bluetooth on the MAC...
Any ideas guys? - I use the app for teaching and this is a real headache...

This whole Bluetooth thing is new to me ...
    1. Does a Bluetooth headphone set (for music only - don't need a mic for phone calls) require a Battery(s) to operate? If so, how often do you have to replace the battery(s)  say for 1 hour per day of use?
There is stereo bluetooth headsets that can be used just for audio listing but most bluetooths are made for phone handsfree use, if you want to listen to audio through bluetooth you have to verify the headset support A2DP profile for streaming audio.
    2. Anyone recommend a very good headphone set that is comfortable & great sound? Do I have to buy something specific for the DX from Verizon? Moto?  Or can I walk into any store and buy a Bluetooth Audio headphone and expect it to work? I *really* don't want to spend $150+ for decent headphones.
Basically all bluetooths can be used but it is a prefrence of what bluetooth works for you but I use Motorola H720 from http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Motorola+-+H720+Bluetooth+Headset+-+Black/9755234.p?id=1218167395767&skuId=9755234&st=bluetooth%20headset&cp=1&lp=5
    $59.99
    3. Are there any "gotchas" using Bluetooth for Audio music?  e.g., sound quality issues? interference?
Your streaming audio wirelessly and the quality can reflect this, if you want the better level of audio through a bluetooth give this a look at http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Rocketfish%26%23153%3B+Mobile+-+Mobile+Behind-the-Head+Bluetooth+Stereo+Headphones+-+Black/9828558.p?id=1218180649134&skuId=9828558&st=bluetooth&contract_desc=null

  • Quality of audio question

    Hello there,
Watching Nigel's presentation at MAX I've noticed that there was a question about possibility to stream MP3 within the LCCS framework.
Nigel, could you elaborate a bit on that (after the Holiday ). For example, wether it's possible to use 'codec' property in MicrophoneManager or AudioPublisher to integrate other than Speex audio codec?
The reason I ask such question is that the audio quality - dynamic range, frequency range, sampling rate - for my project is of significant importance.
Any recommendations as to how to approach the task of maximizing audio fidelity would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Igor Borodin

Infact I said the Flash Player only has "encoders" for voice codecs (but it has decoders for much larger set of a/v formats, like MP3 and H264).
Basically encoding is usually quite expensive so the player only has encoders for low quality / low processing power formats (voice for audio and lower quality video for webcams).
Decoding is most of the time less resource intensive than encoding, and if available can leverage hardware accelleration so the player can supports higher quality formats.

  • Beginner's Questions

As a really new beginner for BEx, I would like to ask you guys some basic questions.
    1) I have a problem with designing a query to serve our requirement.
Fiscal Year       Accounting Num.        Amount          AVG(Amount)
    2006                10001                         100                250
    2006                10002                         200                250
    2006                10003                         300                250
    2006                10004                         400                250
                           Total(AVG)                  250
    2006                10005                         300                350
    2006                10006                         400                350
                           Total(AVG)                  350
What I want is the forth column, which is equal to the average value of amount in the third column. For example, in group 1 (Accounting Number 10001 - 10004), the average of 100 - 400 is 250. In the forth column, I want to get 250.How can I do this?
    2) How can I load a hierarchy from a text file in BI 7.0. I just see the option to maintain the hierarchy in BI, but I can't find the way to load the hierarchy from a text file.

    Hi,
1.Create a formula or CKF which is equal to Amount. name it  AVG(Amount).
right click AVG(Amount) in the query definition.select properties.select calculate  single value as 'Average of all values<>0'.
    i thnk this shld work!

2.) When I log in using valid credentials the url becomes http://xxxx.xxxxx.net:443/myContext/myServlet
and the page I expect to display doesnt. It only displays this:

When I go to http://xxxx.xxxxx.net/myContext my login index.jsp page displays perfectly and I am able to log in and do see the expected page.
Apparently I missed a step somewhere or just the obvious but how do I get my index.jsp to use SSL. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Are you intentionally leaving a connector for port 80 open? If you don't need anything to be non-ssl enabled then you should comment out the port 80 connector and just have a connector for port 443. You should then be able to access any of your stuff via https://whatever/whathaveyou...
    [edit]
this is an obvious question but you didn't mention it so just in case - you did create a self signed server certificate and import that into the keystore right? (or use a commercial certificate and import that and the CA chain into your trust store)

  • Hopefully Simple Audio Question

I am doing a highlight film for a local high school and I have a question about the music. At the end of the game highlight sometimes the song is not completly over so I cut it to end it at the same time as the video. My question for you is how can I fade out just the last 5 seconds of the song and not fade out the whole song. I don't want it getting softer and softer through the song. I think you do it by cutting the last 5 or 10 sec. of the audio (song) and make it an independent clip then take that clip and fade it out. Will this work or not. Thanks. Also I am having a lot of trouble adding text to my video. Should I just do it in motion and not even mess with it in Final Cut. Thanks

press Option W to turn on clip overlays.
then press p to change to the pen tool.
on your music track create an audio keyframe about 5 seconds before the end (just click on the line in the audio track using the pen tool)
create another audio keyframe at the end of the music, and drag this one down to the bottom of the track
... yaaa, you just created an audio fade
alternatively just apply a crossfade transition to the end of your audio track and make the crossfade last 5 seconds long

  • Beginner's question re Audition Effects

This is a real starter question so hoping someone can help me out..
I spent ages fiddling around and getting an audio clip sounding good with EQ earlier I saved it to my premiere pro project. I later realised I hadn't applied to the other audio clips on the track. How can I  go back to the original EQ effect saved on the 1st clip and save that as a preset to apply to the others?
    Many thanks

There are options within the effect for saving presets. Just to the right of the preset box is a tab that you hit to save your settings as a new one. If you haven't used the EQ for anything else, the chances are that your previous settings will reappear from the local preset cache when you re-open it, and you can then save them.

  • Beginner Workflow Questions

    Hi All,
After wearing a Gopro helmet in a hockey game, I'm trying to use PE9 to edit the 1.5 hours of footage and make some sort of movie.  I have everything split into what I think will be relavent sections but now I find it a little overwhelming.  There are so many clips I can never tell where I am or where I want to go.
    My Questions....
    1) Is there a way to rename all the clips in sequence?  For example, the original file is named GOoooo8.  Now I have about 10 GOoooo8's.  Any other naming tips?
    2) Can I tag the clips?  When I go back to organizer, the clips are still in the large original files instead of the new small files.
    3) Is there a way to get the "opacity: clip opacity" off of the timeline?
    Thanks!!
    Wally

I do not know enough about those particular helmet cam clips to comment on the clips themselves. Most use proprietary codecs in order to fit lots of
video in a small space, and that often means that they behave strangely in programs like Premiere Elements.
As for the Opacity notation on your clips, that is one of your clip's properties and it is listed on your clip because it is often keyframed (as when you apply a fade in or fade out effect). You don't want to remove it. You can, however, click on it and, if you prefer, display Motion instead -- though I don't know if that's what you're trying to do.
The Audio equivalents are Volume (displayed by default) and Balance.

  • Help with audio question please

    New guy here,
I have a MAC G5 with Premiere CS4. I do not prior Premiere experience. I've worked several other NLE packages so I'm not a rookie either.
Anyway, I'm routing the audio through an analog mixer and into a Canopus ADVC 110. I've been able to capture video and audio from a DVD player with Premiere's audio hardware settings set to (Built-in line input/Built-in line output). I've been able to capture both video and audio with the hardware setting set to (Built-in digital input/Built-in line output) put when I scrub on the time line or try he clip in he preview window it will not play back when I hit the space bar or click on the play button. When using (Built-in line input/Built-in line output)everything is fine.
Here's my question. How do I preview and adjust the audio prior to capturing it? I can hear it just fine when I'm capturing but I can't preview the audio levels to know where I'm at.
I thought the analog audio going into the Canopus converter would out put the audio as a digital signal since it's being exported to the MAC via firewire.
Hope someone out there is smarter than I am about this.
    Thanks!
    Jim

Based on the concept of Unity in a gain chain, if you set the levels properly at the output of the analog mixer, then they should be fine coming into the software after the A/D conversion. As long as you don't clip the digital input, you can adjust levels internally on an audio timeline, so it is always better to err on the side of too little rather than too much.
Digital maximum is -20 dB which is equivalent to 0 dB VU in the analog world. This provides sufficient headroom to avoid clipping in most circumstance.
Try a few different levels and see what works best for your needs.
