Beginner question: Can I create a hybrid home network between an ethernet-connected iMac and an airport connected Macbook Pro using a hybrid router?

I recently acquired an friend's used iMac, I don't know anything about networks and all I can find is how to create a Wi-Fi home network but nothing about hybrid Ethernet/Wi-Fi networks.
I have the iMac connected via Ethernet to the wireless router.
I connect via Airport with my MacBook Pro
I would appreciate if anyone has any pointers as to how I can start setting up a network between my ethernet-connected iMac and WiFi connected Macbook.
Thanks!

ethernet and airport/WiFi are just transmission media for the same network. If you can get internet on both computers, they are networked. Using the same router = same network.
So now, what is it you want to do? Share files between them?

The router is te network hub.
I have a network between my Linux box and my PC  and my MBP because they are both hooked up the the same router.  All you need is the "192.168.1.x" address of the destination box and the software needed for the type of conection (VNC, SSH, etc).
What helps is to set up "static routing" for all boxes so the IP address does not change.  I have set up my Linux box to be 192.168.1.100 always, using the MAC (the ethernet abbreviation MAC, not Macintosh) in the router's "static routing" table.
Exactly which screens you need in the router depends on te router make and the internal management screens.  The router maker should have either online (if they offer it past a 1 year from purchase) or online help found through Google.  A MAC address is a set of 6 hexadecimal number separated by ":" -- an example (which I imagine will match *some* MAC *somewhere* is "6A:13:F2:72:E4:A1".

  • Can't connect to work server (windows) on MacBook Pro through VPN - via router

Due to the nature of my job now, I am working remotely.
The IT department hooked me up with a MacBook Pro that connects to our work server, which I know is Windows-based, via a VPN. The VPN connects just fine; however, when I go to connect to the server—it doesn't find it. It gives me:
The server “dc03” may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
Interestingly enough, the first time I used it (at Starbucks, then McDonald's) it worked, but at home it wouldn't. We isolated the issue to the router, since I could do it when plugged in, but no one could figure out what kind of settings were different or weird. I went to the store and bought 2 other routers. One worked, the Linksys, but the Belkin did. WHAT? So the cheaper one worked? This was the easiest solution, because still don't know the bottom line: why?
Now, a local spot in town that I frequent—one that used to allow me to connect to my work server—changed routers (the "newest, fastest" AVIS). So now, I cannot connect and get that same message.
My IT guys are stumped. I don't personally know enough about this side of technology to be of any use.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

What is the make & model of the new wireless router that you ISP has provided you? Are you able to administer it if needed?
For the MacBook Pro, try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
In the windows on the left side: Select login for Keychains and "All Items" for Category.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)

  • Can I update keynotes version 5.1.1. to keynotes version 6.2.2. on my macbook pro using snow lepeard?

I have a Macbook pro still on Snow Leopard with Keynotes version 5.1.1.(09)
I have created a Keynote presentation on my MacPro using keynotes v 6.2.2.
When I tried to send the 6.2.2. version over to my Macbook it stated that it was not a valid keynote document.
There is no update connection on the Macbook to update the 09 version.
Will I have to purchase a new Keynotes and will it run on Snow Leopard.
Failing this, it means that I will have to set up the whole presentation again on the Macbook!!! Time consuming.
    Thanks
    SAS

The most up to date version of Keynote that will run in Snow Leopard is 5.3
Keynote version 6.2.2 will not run in Snow Leopard, it will only run in Mavericks
All versions of Keynote are unable to open files created in a later version, so version 5.3 can't open files created in 6.2.2

  • New Ipod Touch 5g can't access Internet in home network (using Linksys E4200 router). But, OK with other Wifi.

Just bought new Ipod Touch 5g. I found out it can't access Internet in home network. not really cannot access, but very slow to open any web page, App Store failed to access, etc. But, OK with other Wifi (office & starbucks). Others existing iOS devices (Iphone4 & Ipad2) have no problem like this. I'm using Linksys E4200 router at home. anyone has any idea why?

    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>GeneralReset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

We are having old home movies put on DVD's. How do we import them to MacBook pro using Snow Leopard and iMovie 8.0.6?  Can watch the movies on the laptop, but they will not import.

We took 3 video cassette 8mm that were recorded in the early 90's to a place that burned the videos onto 3 DVDs.  When inserted to our Mac, the DVD player comes on to play the DVD. Opened Quicktime, but can find no way to import. Went to File>Open File>Sony_DVD_Recorder_Volume. Clicked on Sony_DVD-Recorder_Volume and it shows a file named VIDEO_TS.  Clicked on that and 6 files showed VIDEO_TS.BUP,   VTS_01-0.BUP,   VTS_01_0.IFO,  VTS-01_1.VOB,   VTS_01_2.VOB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  Where is DVDxDV?

I plan on keeping the iMac and PB until they cease to work ( have replaced HD's on both already).  I mostly use the PB-- lots of writing, surfing, email, etc.
    Your thoughts?

The minimum Mac specs (from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) are :
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.2 or later recommended (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access
So you only need Leopard, not Snow Leopard

You have to all be signed into the same Apple ID and on the same WiFi network, but yes you can do it. You have to sign into her Apple ID on your iPad in the store settings.

If you can get them paired again try making them "favorites" from the Bluetooth system preferences.
Try smc and pram reset too.  May gave to do this before you can get them paired.

  • Can I create a "new" iTunes library on an external hard drive and transfer my iTune library to save space on my laptop

Can I create a "new" iTunes library on an external hard drive and transfer my iTune library to save space on my laptop hard drive

Yes. Just copy all your music to a folder on your external. Then delete the music on your computers hard drive.
It is not quite that simple. If you do that you will end up with many broken links and will have to re-create your library from scratch .  iTunes does not like it when you move or rename files or folders and doing so between drives is guaranteed to result in exclamation marks indicating you have broken the links to all your media files.
If you are content with moving the whole library to an external drive (usually the best thing for most people), try:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

How do I use my wireless Led TV as a second monitor to my mac book pro using my home network without any cables? Both of them are connected to home network

Having a gateway there is not going to be a problem. We just need to configure the Time Capsule correctly to work with the 2Wire.
You will need one ethernet cable to connect the 2Wire to the Time Capsule and a second ethernet cable to temporarily connect your computer to the Time Capsule so that it can be configured.
The 2Wire you have now should already be broadcasting a wireless network, so once you have the Time Capsule setup, you will actually have two wireless networks there.
Here's how to configure the Time Capsule to work with the 2Wire:
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire to the WAN (circle icon) port on the Time Capsule.
Connect another ethernet cable temporarily from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a name for the Time Capsule, a device password (write this down) and adjust time zone settings
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
    Wireless Mode....Create a wireless network
    Wireless Network Name....Your choice
    Radio Mode....Automatic
    Channel...Automatic
    Wireless Security...WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password....Your choice (write this down)
Check mark next to....Remember password in keychain
    Click the Internet icon
At the bottom, change the setting for Connection Sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and the Time Capsule will restart after 20-25 seconds and you should get the green light.
You should now be able to connect to your Time Capsule wireless network.
I'm not clear on whether you have tried to setup the Time Capsule to backup your computer. Post back if you need some info on that. We may need to start another thread for that as that will be a different subject.

  • Why can't I login with my Apple ID when I try to setup Cloud on my MacBook Pro?

Why can't I login with my Apple ID when I try to setup Cloud on my MacBook Pro?
    thanks,
    Simon

First question that I am not clear on your answer about: Is the Apple ID itself a valid email address, and the same one that you have as your Primary email address on your account? If the actual Apple ID is not an email address, then that is why you are not able to sign on to iCloud or to verify it....it must be an email address.
If it is an email address then:
Update your OS to the latest version - 10.8.5
Once you have updated, reboot the Mac and then go to Preferences>iCloud and try to sign on with your Apple ID again.
Check Manage your Apple ID to make sure that your Apple ID/Primary email address is verified.
If the problem persists, contact iCloud Support to see if they can provide you with an explanation of the meaning of the message. If the Apple ID has already been verified, then I'm not sure why you would be getting this messge:
