Beginner's inquiry on How Oracle VDI product works

Hi,
I read some Oracle VDI (OVDI) pages but still don't get the whole picture as to how the OVDI product works and decided to shoot some of my questions here. My questions are as follows.
Since my users are currently using only Windows7, WindowsXP, and Smartphones... (no Solaris, no Linux)
Assuming that I installed/configured both OVDI software and storage on either a Sparc or x86_64 box and everything works fine on the OVDI server side,
My question is:
Will my users will use their own devices to just bring up something like "Remote Desktop" to connect to the OVDI server and work there? That is, that's how there's nothing to save on the local drive of their laptops and their laptops would be used as if they were thin clients in the old days?
From the high level picture, I'd like to understand how the server/client works.
Thanks much in advance for sharing your knowledge!
- Steve

Hey Steve,
I'm not sure I understand the background on some of your questions. By the way, we've been using Oracle VDI for a little over 3 years, and we have about 450 virtual desktops (and thin clients) in production at the moment.
"do you think that the Oracle VDI solution really gives the benefits of using VDI?" -- the Oracle solution is as effective as any competitor VDI product, perhaps more so in some respects.
"Not just to follow the IT trend, but from the pragmatic point of view, do you think end-users in corporate businesses would get much more benefits even if it comes with some inconveniences and things that end-users may not like?" -- I think the business has to decide what their goals are with VDI. Is it to make life easier on the user? Is it to reduce IT costs? Is it to improve endpoint security and keep data in the datacenter? Are your users mobile? When we looked at VDI here (a hospital), we needed all those things. I think we came out with nearly all that except for maybe reduced IT costs. Yes, there was some user frustration and confusion early on before they understood how the mobility of VDI could benefit their workflow as they moved through the various buildings here on camps and to their houses. Ultimately I think they accept any minor inconveniences and have come to appreciate what the technology does for them. On the IT side, our lives are much better as well, but our goals early on were more focused on the users (healthcare providers) and their productivity.
"Also, I'd appreciate your feedback on the cost benefits of implementing/maintaining the OVDI solution (vs. continuing to use the laptops/desktops as standalone boxes) as well. Is it worth introducing it now or is it kind of premature yet and too early?" -- I think you mean to say the OVDC (oracle virtual desktop client software client). Honestly if you have the choice, commit to the VDI experience and buy the Oracle thin clients. They are great... there are no moving parts, no fans, nothing really to break. If someone steals one or "loses" it, who cares? Put in another. We replaced a few hundred desktop computers with them and as a result, our helpdesk staff probably can't even remember how to clone a machine or replace a hard drive. They don't have any of the problems that desktops or laptops have, and there is almost nothing to manage about them compared to a full workstation.
The OVDC client fills in some gaps where the thin clients leave off... take mobile users for example. We have thin clients in people's offices here, but they obviously don't have them at home. So instead we package the OVDC client and allow them to run it from home over a VPN. Of course, you can send a real physical thin client home with people if you wanted -- they have built-in VPN capability as well.
Personally, I wouldn't do VDI if you were going to leave all the old workstations and laptops in place. If someone's hard drive dies, you have to go replace it and reinstall the OVDC software... if someone loses their laptop and gets a new one, you have to go install that software again and configure it to look to the VDI servers... If someone gets a virus or malware on their PC and the OVDC client stops working, you have to go fix that PC to get the VDI client working again. None of those things would happen if you had true thin clients in place instead of full client side workstations.
I hope this helps a bit? If I am confused on something, please let me know. Whatever solution you go with, VDI is definitely ready for primetime, even in 24x7 environments. It will change the way your IT department works, and you might even end up with a few happy users.
thanks

  • How Oracle Connection Manager Works

    as this image
    http://www7.0zz0.com/2013/04/30/08/747223164.gif

    So each user has a connection reserved while he/she is online. X number of online users need x number of connections. It is resource consuming. Javamail connection pool is to solve this kind of problem, I believe. No, I'm afraid that's not true.
    First, the JavaMail connection pool is for IMAP connections only, and it only applies to a
    single user.
    IMAP connections are extremely stateful, and that state is represented in the JavaMail API.
    It's extremely difficult to share a single connection between multiple users.
    The simplest approach is to assume that each user has one folder open at a time, and each
    open folder requires a separate connection. You should time out connections after some
    short period of inactivity; typical IMAP servers will time out the connection after 30 minutes.

  • Anyone know when will Oracle VDI support Oracle VM Server x86?

    Hi there.
    Is there a roadmap or plan for Oracle VDI support Oracle VM server x86?
    I think we need enterprise class(type-1) hypervisor.
    DH,

    I dont think its in the roadmap because Oracle VM does not lend itself nicely to all the technology deeply embedded in Oracle VDI, namely, VRDP which is a proprietary remote desktop protocol Oracle VDI leverages to paint screens directly from a VirtualBox remote display session. The only thin Oracle VM (Xen) has close to this is the dated VNC protocol.
    We went down this road early on, expecting Oracle VDI to integrate, but the more we learn about how Oracle VDI does things, the more it doesn't make sense to adapt Oracle VM Server to do this.
    I don't know Oracles plans surrounding this (who does?) but it would seem it would take ALOT of work and redesign to make that happen, whereas they already acquired Oracle VDI (and VirtualBox) from their SUN acquisition.

  • How to configure Solaris 10 IPMP for Oracle VDI 3.3.2

    Hi,
    Does anyone have an indication on how to configure Solaris 10 IPMP in a manner that supports Oracle VDI?
    We have setup two servers with 2 test addresses on physical and 1 logical for the hostname of the box, but when we configure VDI the VDI database does not come up on the 2nd box. We have also tried configuring IPMP without test addresses, but it doesn't make any difference - the DB still doesn't go into the up state after configuration on the 2nd server.
    Solaris 10 u9 with patches
    Two physical NICs on management VLAN via 2 switches
    Two physical NIcs on VDI VLAN via 2 switches
    VDI 3.3.2
    All hostnames are in DNS and resolve for short name, FQDN and also reverse IP lookup
    The is a proposal pdf on Oracle website that mentions IPMP, so someone has done it. Just could do with a hint on how it was done so that it works.
    ( http://www.oracle.com/us/technologies/virtualization/vdi-design-proposal-1401195.pdf )
    Thanks
    Paul

    OK, updating this with what was causing the issue.
    Not an IPMP problem this was a DNS problem. The VDI servers have access to two DNS environments, so had a DNS search path that had the domain where the VMs where going to go and another for management of the box with two DNS servers listed in /etc/resolv.conf.
    We configured VDI using the FQDN for the management DNS, however the vda-config script takes the hostname of the box adds the first DNS domain from /etc/resolv.conf search entry and configures using (it seams to ignore what you put into the vda-config). When the config script comes to configuring MySQL because the names didn't match (FQDN it created by adding hostname to the 1st entry in DNS search path & FQDN that you put into vda-config command), it decides that it is configuring a "Client MySQL" instance rather than a "Slave MySQL" instance, which means the VDA DB never comes up in the out of vda-center status.
    So the fix is to:
    1) configure IPMP without test addresses (so traffic comes out of the correct IP and can be reverse looked up in DNS by the other host)
    2) if you have multiple DNS search entries, configure VDI using the first entry in your search path as its FQDN

  • Anyone knows how to implement Decomposition Tree in Oracle BI products? to

    Hello Everybody
    Recently I'm trying to use Oracle BIEE plus to upgrade our old report service in our product. I'm a newbee to OracleBI products but I have a question that oracle support guys in our region also could figure out a clear answer. If anybody here can give me some clues it would be appreciated.
    I once used ProClarity BI product before, and ProClarity report service can provide a very powerful visualization tool like Decomposition Tree. I'm quite interested this function. But I searched many Oracle BIEE plus and ESSBASE documents, it seems Oracle BI can' implements the functional for which Proclrity Decomposition Tree can provided?
    Is there any body knows any other solution to implement Decomposition Tree in Oracle BI product?
    Thanks

    Appreciated the quick response:)
    Yes. I don't find the directory object .. I'm not very familiar with biee so far so might be me slight this object in my investigation.
    I need to check this object and see how it works.
    And thanks for your advise.

  • How to determine which of the Oracle security products have been installed

    Hello!
    I would like to determine whether or not the Oracle security products have been installed for an Oracle database.
    The Oracle security products are:
    * Oracle Database Vault
    * Oracle Audit Vault
    * Oracle Configuration Management
    * Oracle Total Recall
    * Oracle Advanced Security
    * Oracle Data Masking
    * Oracle Label Security
    * Oracle Secure Backup
    * Oracle Database Firewall
    So what I thought is to look at the "DBA_REGISTRY" table which displays information about the components loaded into the database.
    But on the other hand there also is the "V$OPTION" view which lists database options and features.
    Does anybody know, how I could correctly determine whether or not each of the product is installed?
    I guess for "Oracle Database Vault" I should query V$OPTION, but what should I do with the other ones? And in case DBA_REGISTRY would be the right table, how would the comp_ids look like for the products?
    SELECT 'Oracle Database Vault' , nvl( (SELECT VALUE FROM V$OPTION WHERE PARAMETER = 'Oracle Database Vault'),'FALSE') FROM sys.dual
    OR
    SELECT 'Oracle Database Vault' , nvl2( (SELECT 'valueFound' FROM DBA_REGISTRY WHERE comp_id = '??????' AND status NOT IN ('INVALID', 'REMOVING' , 'REMOVED')),'TRUE','FALSE') FROM sys.dual
    Thanks in advance
    Kai

    Hi kai;
    There are some script avaliable on net, first please check them and run it on test server first!

  • How Oracle to deal with the data lose?-----QNo.104

    In incomplete recovery,some data will be lost. How Oracle to deal with it?
    For example, at 9:00am, you find that it is a mistake to drop a user(you dropped it at 8:30am). But other users' transactions are in progress. A lot of data is input between 8:30 and 9:00. If decide to make a incomplete recovery, does this means all the data input between 8:30 and 9:00 will be lost?

    For example, at 9:00am, you find that it is a mistake to drop a user(you dropped it at 8:30am. But the transactions are in progress. To make you clear, you can't drop the user while session connected to this schema.
    I dont think that you would loose any data.
    The other workaround for this issue would be,
    I would clone this on other server just before the user dropped, take the export and then import the user in the production.
    Is this satisfy your question?

  • Why and how oracle allows this?

    Hi
    Can someone please clear my understanding on this?
    i had installed oracle 10g on my personal laptop a while ago and i have forgot the password,
    then by searrching in net i found this way of logging in from dos prompt
    "/ as sysdba"
    i would like to know
    -how oracle allows this?
    -whether anyone who logs into my system can do this?
    -whether it is possible to do like this in any production environment? i hope it wont be, how they prevent this in production database
    Thank you
    MJ

    -how oracle allows this?
    # yes, this is the way Oracle works.
    -whether anyone who logs into my system can do this?
    # If you can login to the OS as the user who owns and/or runs the database software you can login to the database without a username/password. If you login to the OS as another user you can't login to the database without a username/password. Not sure why you are so worried about a database on your personal laptop ? If you don't want anyone to access your data, don't give them the OS password (or you could encrypt your data).
    -whether it is possible to do like this in any production environment? i hope it wont be, how they prevent this in production database
    # yes, production systems are like this also. This is why you should not let anyone know the password of the OS user that runs the database. If you give out the OS password, then you have given away access. This security is good enough for banks and governments, so it should be good enough for you.

    i want to make my career in oracle which should be more dynamic,learning and creative not like in production support which have monotonus life.I wish it were monotonous! When it costs $$/second for production to stop, it can get very exciting very fast!

    second devolper track in sql/pl sql having its own limitations like less demand, less financial growth etc. and people usually wants to shift in other area like BOThere is about 10X more demand for developers than administrators over the long term. Various sub-specialties are hot at various times. But that isn't as important as knowing what excites you.

    5)Others (thats all i know,please add some others if they are creative )
    Problem area:
    1)iam really confused now which way to choose development or support?Most people find development much more exciting. But that depends on what you like and what your skill set is and the support environment. I once had a support job that I loved, until it simply became overwhelming in volume. I've seen support people in jobs that I just pitied, they were so bad. DBA is my real love, what's yours? I have a dev/support/admin job, so even though most work isn't what I would choose, I still get to do what I find exciting. It took a lot of experiences to get to this point, though.
    2)how to jump in other company on what basis after total experience of 2 years? Since iam in prod support they will hire me for the same againThat is true, headhunters and HR departments want those with 2 years experience in a specific skill set, because they are cheaper. The trick is to find an environment where you can move to what you want. For many people, that is a development environment, especially if you can find a mentor that can help you move in the direction you want. Of course, you need to define that direction. Life throws all sorts of opportunities at you at random times, you need to be prepared to seize them when they come.
    3)How could i get to others areas like CRM,BO datawarehouse,apps ?As they more demanding and good learning and future pathDevelopment and implementation are about it. They all have a future path, some are very boring. What's boring to me may be exciting to you.
    4)what to do right now at this position to enhance my skill set in this field (What to learn? )Look at the sites that post job ads in your area. You need a critical eye to translate into what they really want, but it becomes obvious what is hot. Of course, you need to know what will be hot in a couple of years, but if you see what is hot now, you can pick up on those in a couple of years when something else is hot, and eventually catch up.

    Seeking good help from forum experts.
    Please suggest!A lot of work is what you make of it, attitude overrides knowledge. You can always learn, but your attitude comes from within and takes effort to improve.
    If you can find something that you like that everyone else thinks is bad, so much the better. That is the essence of geekdome.

  • How oracle is used in Essbase

    Hi
    I just want to know how oracle is used in Essbase, to what extent it is used.
    Do i need to write procedures ,triggers....... in essbase.
    Krishna

    Oracle and/other relational systems can be a source of data for Essbase databases, but the data is not currently shared between Oracle and Essbase. Data is extracted from Oracle (tables and views) and loaded into Essbase. Essbase has it's own database to store the data. Depending on how it is loaded, the source system can also be used in a "Drill through" situation to get more detail than the Essbase database holds. Oracle can also be used as a repository for some of the companion products of essbase to hold "system" data. Things like report definitions, screen format, users, etc.
