Beginner's intro to 3d logo's

I made a quick youtube video introducing 3d logo's. The 2d layers were created with the rectangle and ellipse shape tools plus some text.
The 3 layers were converted to a smart object so that all the objects would have the same thickness and position in depth. Had I done each layer seperate, I would have had to do triple the work. The convert to 3d process can not be done with multiple layers selected or grouped.
The video is short and a little dry, but I thinks it gets to the point.
Enjoy the video...

Sounds like a combination of the help and Rick's Skinny on Skins is required reading. You can get the later here.

• Adding intro/outro to Flash video

Hi there,
Sorry for cross-posting, but I posted this to the plain Flash
forum a
few weeks ago and got no response. I'm wondering if this is a
better
venue for it, so I'll try again:
We have created a series of short video product reviews that
are all
being loaded dynamically into a common SWF container
something like this:

We want to add a simple common intro and outro (logo fading
to video for
intro and logo fading back in for outro). Is there a cool and
clean way
to do this as part of the Flash movie rather than having to
insert it
into each QT movie beforehand?
The biggest problem seems to be determining when to begin the
outro
since all the videos are slightly different durations. Is
there some way
to use script to determine when each video is ending and
trigger the
closing animation?
Thanks for any help with this,
Don Hinshaw

open the xml file and look at it. it should be obvious how it corresponds with the video.
then read the flash help files about working with cue points. read the section(s) that relate to your actionscript version and which class (netstream, flvplayback component) you're using to play your flv.

• Premiere Elements 12: Rendering not on the exact frames

I'm using Premiere Elements 12 and cutting MOV files in most cases.
Now I detected that PE isn't rendering always correctly: In some cases the rendered file shows at the end of a clip 1 more frame than in it shows in the cutting window.
Meaning: The original MOV clip contains 2 scenes. I import the MOV file into my PE12 project and put it into the cutting window.
Then I'm moving the viewing bar of the cutting window exactly to the end of scene 1 and click "cut".
When I separate both scenes in the cutting window, PE12 show exactly the result I want to get: scene 1 ends with the last frame of scene 1, scene 2 starts with the first frame of scene 2.
Then I delete scene 2 and render scene 1 to a MP4 file.
When viewing the result file in any player (e.g. Windows Medie Player, VLC, Quicktime), all these players show at the end of scene 1 the first frame of the original scene 2.
Again: even if I couldn't see this first frame of scene 2 in the cutting window!
So the cutting window doesn't show EXACTLY the result I will get!
I already tries different ways of importing the original MOV files, different codecs and so on - nothing helped.
In roughly 50% the cuts of the final file are like planned, the other 50% of cuts show one frame too much at the end of a scene.
Problem: In a lot of cases the scenes are already very short, so I can't give always "one frame plus" before I cut: sometimes I really need every single frame.
And I can't believe that a programm like Premiere Elements should not be able to cut exactly at the frame where it is supposed to!
So does anyone have a clou what I'm doing wrong?
Or this this a knows issue of PE?
Thanks in advance!

Dear ATR,
I now found some time to check this out.
Let me describe exactly what I'm doing:
Source file is a MOV file full HD.
Drag & drop it onto the timeline.
Set half frame option (is it called "field"?) to "reduce flickering" - because if I don't (default option: "none"), the rendered result is not that stable, meaning the picture is totterling a little. Is this normal? Could this setting cause the trouble with the last frame at cutting/rendering?
Switched Timeline to frame display instead of timecode.
By the way: this CTRL + clicking the area above the Timeline doesn't work ...
Moved the Timeline bar with the arrow keys to the position where I want to cut; the Monitor Window above the Timeline showed the first frame of scene 2. Doublechecked by moving the cursor with the arrow keys one frame forward and back again to really got the right position (twice). Clicked "cut" icon on Timeline.
Repeated the same at the end of scene 2 - the Monitor showed the first frame of scene 3.
Moved scene 2 to another position on the Timeline with the mouse (drag & drop).
Checked cuts on the timeline: scene 2 showed the first and last frame as it should.
Repeated all this with 10 scenes from the original MOV file, brought all of them into a new position and thus order.
Deleted the rest of the original MOV file from the timeline.
Put the 10 scenes together, placed them at the left side of the Timeline.
Rendered the result.
Settings: AVCHD - MP4
PAL, 1920 x 1080 px, 30 fps, Widescreen 16:9, Profile: High, Level: 5.0
rendern with max depth: "no"
VBR, 2-path
target: 15 mbps
max: 25 mbps
Audio; AAC, stereo, 48 Khz, Quality: high, 160 kbps
Priority: Bitrate
The result file showes on 4 of 10 scenes that one frame too much at the end of the cut scene.
And it always happens at the same scenes, not randomly!
So it does not depend if I'm viewing frames or timecode in the Timeline. Surprise!
But what I detected: When I'm using a "new project", this issue does not occur!!!
So I looked at the project settings: The "new project" I let the default settings be, because it I should import a file and drag this to the Timeline, the software would give me a message if the project settings should not match.
Default settings are: NTSC-ADCHD-AVCHD 1080p60.
But what I normally do is using a template file with all my intro, outro, audio, logo and so on, copy that *.prel file where I want to edit it, rename it and then open this copied prel file. Here I the project settings show:
HD 1080i, 25 fps, 1920 x 1080 (I guess I once selected this under PAL because there is no PAL 1080p25 oder 30, just 1080p50). And I'm from Germany, so I chose PAL instead of NTSC ...
So I guess this makes a difference - even if I do not have a clue, why.
Big question now: How can I chance my project settings in my template file without making it anew?
Because I cannot copy all the objects from one project to another, right? At least I never managed to do so...
To built the template anew would take about 6 hours, and on this basic template are based 6 more templates for special formats. So makeing all templates anew would cost me up to 2-3 days!!!
So I really hope for a better solution
Kind regards,
Lutz

• SAP HR Introduction help needed

Hello, I am very new to SAP, and am currently a student looking up information about SAP for an academic exercise. Just to get a handle on SAP HR portal, does anyone know of some good books or links for information on how to start building an SAP HR portal. I need to understand more information about the usual setups, costs, and other general information about this type of setup and I don't have too much experience with SAP to begin with. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have looked around the wiki here and there is a ton of information, and I haven't found any really beginner or intro data that has what I am looking for.
Thanks

Hi Jon,
For SAP HR you can use the ESS (Employee Self Services) and MSS (Manager Self Services). These can be implemented into the business logic and processes via the SAP Portal.
Links:
-> ESS
- /thread/428959 [original link is broken]
-> MSS
- MSS configuration
Use the key words "MSS configuration" on the SDN, this brings you a lot of practical stuff (unfortunately not on the lowest level of expertise).
Additional HR fields are:

• Play animation only once

I am building a site that will use flash for the top
navigation bar. I want some items in the navigation bar to animate
the first time into the site, but then remain static from there on
out. As an example, look at www.summerlin.com. After the intro
page, the logo in the top left animates your first time in. After
that, it is static, even if you go to another page and come back to
the home page. Does anyone have any good suggestions on how to
accomplish this? I could do it with cookies, but I am wondering if
there is a better way. It's an asp page, so I could also pass a
variable in the URL string or the http header, but I'd like to
handle it entirely in Flash. I suppose I could do it if the flash
document can detect the refering page (not the page it's on, the
one the user just came from). Can flash do this? Any
thoughts?

• .mov into Premiere Pro not supported

When I try to import, I get a notice that says the video (.mov) is not supported. Do I need a program for it to work?
Thank you,
Tracy

I just installed Quick Time and it plays fine.
I can get it into After Effects but this is a program that I've never worked with. It looks like it shows a small portion of the images on its monitor. Learning AE is on my list of priorities but I don't have the manual.
A friend across the country made an intro for my logo in AE and sent it over the internet. I just figured it's all compatible.
I've played it and seen it, I just can't do anything with it.
Thanks,

• Play Edge animation only once

I have created an animation in Edge Animate, and placed it in the middle of a page in Muse and applied the Edge Animate scroll effect.
The animation works nicely, but it repeats over and over as I scroll. I only want the animation to play ONCE.
I tried coding a STOP ALL action on the final frame, but that seems to be ignored by Muse.
I even tried extending the end of the animation, and jumping back so it would sit and loop on the final frame ad infinity... that too seems to be ignored by Muse.
Is there really no way to only have an animation play once while scrolling?

• Connecting to Ubuntu machine from PowerBook

I can connect wirelessly to my self-build machine running Ubuntu 12.04, both from my Intel iMac (10.6.8) and my G4 PowerBook (10.4.11), by opening Terminal and typing:
ssh -X [email protected]
where 'hostname' is the name of the Ubu machine. The 'ssh -X' at the start is something I latched onto early on in my investigating this sort of thing. I'm very, very new to Terminal.
I only need relatively few commands, I think, to do what I need to do from time to time, and accordingly have learned a few which work OK.
This is the Preferences window for Terminal on my PB :
Regarding the un-selected option "Execute this command (specify complete path):", could I use that to automatically execute the command I noted above so that I could save the tedium of typing what is, unfortunately, a longish username-hostname combination. (I wish I had thought ahead and chosen a really short name for my new machine.)
These are machines in my home, and I'm the only person who will have access to both Terminal and the Ubu machine, so in-home security doesn't even figure in all this.

Thanks for your long reply. I'm sorry to say that I don't really understand most of the technicalities in it. I have an extremely limited exposure to this so far, and have learned a few tricks to achieve what I want.
FWIW, you're playing in the proverbial deep end of the pool here. The shell can be quite unforgiving of certain sorts of mistakes, too.
Although in my first post I set out the command ssh -X user@user-etc, I can achieve the same effect that I want (or so it seems) by simply typing ssh user@user-etc.
For instance, the command sensors works with or without the -X.
Similarly, I can update and/or upgrade the software by issuing the appropriate commands (via aliases I created), with or without the -X.
With the -X (or -Y), ssh is intending to tunnel X Windows sessions, and (to function) the ssh -X (or -Y) command is issued from an X11.app Xterm environment. If you're not using remote X displays tunneled via ssh, then you don't need -X (or -Y) here, nor do you need X11.app for that matter.
Basically, I'm happy to acquire the few commands I need to carry out a limited number of tasks.
I'd spend a little time with the bash beginner's intro and related materials including the shell-scripting intro. If you're going to be using Terminal.app on OS X or managing a Linux box with the command line, you'll need some grounding in bash and related.
What I'm wondering, is whether I can shortcut the whole login process after the prompt, and do away with the need for a password.
That's what I was referring to in that reply, and in the linked ssh no-password article. (I don't have an article covering connecting to Linux, unfortunately. There are undoubtedly a few posted around the 'net, however.)
In general, you can get to a no-password login by setting up the certificate keys appropriately. ssh can use what is called a public-private key-pair, and the public key can be, well, public. The private key must be maintained like a password; privately. You first create a key-pair on OS X as described in the article, or from various other resoures around the 'net. With the private key kept on your local system (again, as described in the article) and with the public key transferred over onto the Linux system (and into its ssh directories), you will get an automatic login, or you'll be prompted for the passphrase associated with the key-pair. This passphrase is associated with the key-pair, and is not your login password.
There are other ways to do a no-password login including as setting up Open Directory and Kerberos on your local network, but those are more involved than setting up an ssh key-pair. Those are going to be more effort to set up.
ARD, screen sharing or CoRD are the other options, and entirely avoid the command-line, assuming the Linux box has RDP server capabilities configured.

I am starting a YouTube Fitness channel and I am in need of a logo and intro. I am nowhere near good enough with illustrator or after effects to create either of these. Would anyone be willing to help me out? Please please please.

• Particles To text for logo intro...?

I'm wanting to do a short 8 second logo (intro) to my videos.
I'd like to do a particle to text effect.
Quite similar to these:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbUS1y23U7A
Or this:
http://videohive.net/item/-particle-burst-logo-reveal/9513664
Any tutorials on how to do this in Motion?
(I have latest version)

Neither one of those examples is particularly a "particles to text" type project. This one is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wl5mcVtZYY
If you want something like those examples, there are several pre-built emitters in Motion's Library > Particle Emitters. All you need to do is animate them along paths of your choosing then "reveal" text from behind them (a simple Fade In will do.)
If you want to learn "particle explosions", there is this tutorial ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O8OaaWV0Yg ) which demonstrates how to create an explosion effect, then reverse it to create an implosion effect. Since you'll be working with text (which you would use as the Image Source in the Emitter), you can skip the step that is used to "Take Image Color" and colorize the particles any way you like (generally "Pick From Color Range").
Hope this helps.

• Trouble re-sizing a logo in InDesign.

I am trying to resize a logo to place on a business card. When I insert the logo and hit ctrl+shift to resize with the cornerbox I shrink it and the box becomes smaller but the image stays the same size. So pretty much it is merely just zooming into the logo and cutting off the picture. It is a jpeg. file. Can anyone help please? Beginner at InDesign here.

Make sure you press the keys BEFORE you click the mouse.
