Beginner's question on unintended sound reduction

Hi.
I've noticed that when I export a multitrack mixdown into an mp3 file, the new mp3 file will sound slightly quieter than the original sound files I've used. I've done a simple experiment and kind of confirmed this so I know it isn't just my ears playing tricks on me.
What I did was I took a random mp3 song file, dropped it into Track 1, did absolutely no editing on it and exported it (File > Export > Multitrack Mixdown > Entire Session) as another mp3 with a different name. Then I took this newly exported mp3 and dropped it into Track 2. If you look at their waveform, Track 2 has "shorter lines" in its waveform throughout the whole song, which to me means the sound is "less loud".
I seriously did no editing before exporting. I didn't lower the dB on either track. When I exported, I matched the same Sample Rate/Bit Depth/Kbps as the original mp3. The only difference I see is that the original mp3's source format says "mp3 320 Kbps CBR", and the newly exported mp3 says "MP3 320 Kbps CBR OFL".
I don't know if that is the reason, but I'm guessing it's not.
So why does this happen? Could it be "fixed" if i simply turn up the dB on Track 2? Or did I actually lose audio quality after exporting?
Please help

It's caused by the pan law setting in Multitrack (go to Preferences>Multitrack). If you pick the Left/Right Logarithmic setting instead of -3dB center, your file will export at an identical level to the one you've already got.

  • Beginner font questions

These are some beginner font questions if someone has the time/patience.
I've never paid much attention to fonts over the years, never installed
any other than those that might have come with applications. Early on,
15 years ago or so, I settled on Palatino and I've stayed with it for
most docs (Word 5.1a and now Word vX) and often for other apps (Safari,
    Now).
I just upgraded to Tiger (10.4.4) and I use Word vX.
    Questions:
    1. I gather from looking at Font Book that when I'm using Palatino in
Tiger that OS X is getting it from my OS 9 System folder for Classic.
It does not look like Palatino is in any other locations including MS
Office vX. Does that make sense?
    2. I always thought that Palatino was a very basic, always available
    font. Not so?
    3. If I decide to stop using Classic, and I'm close to that time, can I
transfer those fonts to OS X? If so, to which location is best.
    4. And are the same fonts used for printing and screen? In other words
back in pre OS X days I thought some fonts came in screen versions and
print versions but my memory is hazy on that. Not only that.
Thank you for any education or links for info.

It seems to be out of favor.

Yes, you can just put it in Users/username/Library/Fonts (or Library/Fonts for all users).

  • 2 easy questions - one on file size, teh other on sound reduction

    Hi, hope you can help:
    1. If I make a 30 second movie clip in imovies that I would like to put on myspace it is 600MB and the limit is 100MB. How do I reduce the file size or what other options do I have?
    2. When I overlay music from itunes onto a movie clip, is it possible to take the sound off the movie clip, or quieten the sound during the music?
    Thanks for your help

    1) in the share dialog, you see some presets, mail, web, cd.rom.. choose one of these and your file size will shrink dramatically...
I personal prefer a "manual" setting, choose Quicktime, hit the button, and you get confronted with a second window, with zillions of options...
    2) sure, spend some time reading..:

  • Newbie question about vinyl noise reduction

    Dear folks,
I am entirely new to Audition (trying out the Mac beta), so if this question is entirely answered by other threads, please just point me in the right direction. Thanks!
I am transcribing all my vinyl albums (48KHz, 32 bit) as FLAC files and now I need to clean up the transcriptions. Both DeClicker and Noise Reduction (process) seem to do an excellent job at the default settings for each, but I am not sure of the best way to use them--
First, which order is it best to use them in; DeClicker first or Noise Reduction first?
Second, are the default settings ( threshold :30 and complexity:16 forDeClicker and 100%/40dB for Noise Reduction ) the best ones to be using in general? If not, what qualities, audible or otherwise should I be looking/listening forto help me figure out the best settings to use?
Third, any recommendations for help files or tutorials I should read on this subject?
    Thanks for your help!

    Ctein wrote:
If I understand you correctly, you're recommending two passes with the Noise reduction process-- one with a large FFT followed by one with a smaller FFT sample size, right? The default for the process is a 4K sample window, with windows from 0.5K to 16K available. What values would you recommend for the two passes, and what NR percentages and dB "reduce by's" would you recommend for each pass.
Yes you understand correctly, but it's rather difficult to say how much to use in any given situation, because it depends entirely on the condition of the original recording. The basic rule is 'as little as you can to achieve an acceptable result', whatever FFT size you are using. As for sizes, the 4k is fine for the LF pass (you might want to look at adjusting the blue line to shape it so that it only attacks the bass, as well) and 16k is fine for everything else.
In some ways it's easier to talk about what is a realistic end result to achieve, than actual reduction numbers. Realistically, you should be able to get vinyl noise floors down to around minus 60-65dB, assuming that your signals get close to 0dB peaks. But with some older records, you may well not get this far before things start to sound rather 'fake' because you've over-processed the results. Often it's better to monitor the results on a pair of headphones rather than speakers - you'll hear more low-level detail, and have a better idea of how much processing you can get away with.
Yes, RX2 is pretty damn good - as good as you can get, in fact. But for vinyl, with care you can definitely get good results with Audition, but it takes more effort, especially with the NR. What actually makes RX2 good is that the multiple pass part of the processing is done for you by the software, and that's the major difference - other than that, the basic algorithms are quite similar. But, it costs an arm and a leg, so unless you have a massive amount to do, or somebody's paying you to do this, it's a dubious investment.

  • Beginner's question

i started to work with labview newly, the task im tryin to do is the following : i have a microcontroller and i wanna know if it is alive or not .. simply am tryin to open a port (com) and to ping the microcontroller using the functions (.dll provided).
as it could be seen from the attached file i have tow functions, the first opens a port (to the microcontroller) and returns a handle to the second function which pings the module (microcontroller). i tried to see if the functions return something but it looks like they don't.
am really stuck, i tried to read some manules but i didnt get what i want out of them!!
in all cases thx in advance .

As Dennis mentioned without additional details no one will be able to accurately answer your questions. However, based on what you have provided I am not sure you will need the .dll at all. Basic serial communication is very easy in LabVIEW. There are several examples that ship with LabVIEW that you can look at. You would use VISA to open a serial connection and to read or write data on that connection. The second function call you specified may be a bit more challenging to implement in LabVIEW without a full understanding of exactly what the function is doing. A basic ping sounds fairly straightforward though and would probably be easy to reverse engineer what that function is doing. A serial port monitor would show you what was being sent and received. From there you should be able to implement it directly in LabVIEW.

  • Beginner's Questions

As a really new beginner for BEx, I would like to ask you guys some basic questions.
    1) I have a problem with designing a query to serve our requirement.
Fiscal Year       Accounting Num.        Amount          AVG(Amount)
    2006                10001                         100                250
    2006                10002                         200                250
    2006                10003                         300                250
    2006                10004                         400                250
                           Total(AVG)                  250
    2006                10005                         300                350
    2006                10006                         400                350
                           Total(AVG)                  350
What I want is the forth column, which is equal to the average value of amount in the third column. For example, in group 1 (Accounting Number 10001 - 10004), the average of 100 - 400 is 250. In the forth column, I want to get 250.How can I do this?
    2) How can I load a hierarchy from a text file in BI 7.0. I just see the option to maintain the hierarchy in BI, but I can't find the way to load the hierarchy from a text file.

    Hi,
1.Create a formula or CKF which is equal to Amount. name it  AVG(Amount).
right click AVG(Amount) in the query definition.select properties.select calculate  single value as 'Average of all values<>0'.
    i thnk this shld work!

  • Question About the Sound Blaster Ca

I haven't yet read all the info on ever one of your cards, but was hoping one of you Creative Labs guys could answer my question for me. I looking for a card either now or maybe one you guys could think about to do more than one sound at a time. Meaning... Say I'm playing a PC game and have the game playing on my computer speakers.. or in my case. On my Home Stearo system. And I have a program, which in my case is Ventrilo. (Which is a Computer Specking program used to talk with other players online that are in our server) Now Looking for a card to play the game on the stearo speckers and the sound from vent (people talking) on my headphones. So You are hearing the game on the speckers in great 6.7 7., 5. sound.. and the talking is all coming though on the headphones.. so you can hear the people easyer when they are talking. Also making it more realistic. Sorry about my spelling also. Hopfully you guys will be able to see where I'm getting at. Maybe the card could do up to three different sounds on three different soucres. So is this card real? Something that could come out? Or just somehing that couldn't happen on a PC card. Thanks for reading.

If you can specify which soundcard the program uses when you talk to other people, I have a setup that might work for you. Instead of trying to combine all of that into the soundcard, use the soundcard just for the game. Then use a bluetooth headset and a bluetooth network adaptor for the voice chat. The bluetooth antenna I have shows up as a second soundcard called bluetooth audio. If you can't specify which soundcard the program uses though then this most likely won't work.

  • Beginner SSL questions

I am still very much a beginner and this is my first time trying to set SSL up. I am experiencing some issues and I am not really sure what to do. I hope this is the right forum to post this.
When I go to https://xxxx.xxxxx.net/myContext my login index.jsp page displays however
1.) In IE it's not showing the page as secured(no lock).
2.) When I log in using valid credentials the url becomes http://xxxx.xxxxx.net:443/myContext/myServlet
and the page I expect to display doesnt. It only displays this:
3.) None of my stylesheets are being used.
When I go to http://xxxx.xxxxx.net/myContext my login index.jsp page displays perfectly and I am able to log in and do see the expected page.
Apparently I missed a step somewhere or just the obvious but how do I get my index.jsp to use SSL. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Are you intentionally leaving a connector for port 80 open? If you don't need anything to be non-ssl enabled then you should comment out the port 80 connector and just have a connector for port 443. You should then be able to access any of your stuff via https://whatever/whathaveyou...
    [edit]
this is an obvious question but you didn't mention it so just in case - you did create a self signed server certificate and import that into the keystore right? (or use a commercial certificate and import that and the CA chain into your trust store)

  • Beginner's question re Audition Effects

This is a real starter question so hoping someone can help me out..
I spent ages fiddling around and getting an audio clip sounding good with EQ earlier I saved it to my premiere pro project. I later realised I hadn't applied to the other audio clips on the track. How can I  go back to the original EQ effect saved on the 1st clip and save that as a preset to apply to the others?
    Many thanks

There are options within the effect for saving presets. Just to the right of the preset box is a tab that you hit to save your settings as a new one. If you haven't used the EQ for anything else, the chances are that your previous settings will reappear from the local preset cache when you re-open it, and you can then save them.

  • Question about my sound, please see these video examples

    Hi Premiere Elements gurus
Say, I wonder if you know what's going on with my audio? If you look at these three clips:
    http://youtu.be/UkWyqPcULEM
    http://youtu.be/eXCs1W5DMx
    http://youtu.be/XsxvoieBnQA
You'll notice that there is a lot of hiss in the background. In fact,  there used to be a little bit more, but I used the noise reducer in  Adobe Premiere Elements, but that make the audio sound a little weird,  with some extra reverb.
Does it sound like there is more/extra hiss or room noise than you would  expect (than "normal")? And if so, if this caused by my equipment  setup, as I have a Sennhesier G2 Evolution wireless mic feeding into a  Canon Vixia via it's mini-plug, but I have the output on the Sennheiser  set very low and perhaps the Canon is adding extra gain to boost the  sound? Just a theory.
Do you think it's possible to get clean sound, where I can remove the hiss/hum and just get vocal, using the audio effects? What plugins would I use and how would I use them, what settings?
OR is there a third party audio scrubber that will clean the sound for me somewhere?
    Thanks!
    Ronald

Hi both of you. Thanks for your replies!
I think I found a solution. First, I've also uploaded a copy of two of the videos with the original sound and with the Noise Reduction effect removed, but the Denoiser (which was already in Premiere Elements since version 7) effect applied. The Denoiser did an excellent job of removing the extra noise that I hear.
Do you guys hear a different in the audio between these sets of three clips?

  • Questions about USB sound blas

I just got the Creative USB Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX, and I simply love it. It was well worth the $0 I paid for it with a gift card I had to blow anyway. I have come to expect quality from Creative, through 2 sets of speakers, an MP3 player, and now a USB sound device.
I do have a question though. I've got USB . in the machine I use the device in. I'm wondering if it would make any difference to use USB 2.0?
Also, there was a very large cable that came in the box that I couldn't find out what it was. Do I need this cable? My music is working great right now, but I'm wondering if I need that cable.

The USB-6008 is supported by both DAQmx and DAQmx Base, so you can
definately use a USB-6008 with Visual Basic 6 through the DAQmx
API.  Information on how to get started can be found at this link:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/B22FE2B0F9C8935286256E920073DA07?OpenDocument
While the DAQmx driver is the preferred API under Windows, you may also
use the DAQmx Base driver with VB 6 if you prefer.  It is slightly
more work to set up however.  Instructions on how to do that can
be found at the following link:

  • Question Regarding the Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Gam

Hello everyone, I apologize if this question has been asked dozens of times, but it's something I've dug through countless number of posts to find an answer to. I bought a sennheiser pc 350 headset this past weekend along with a sound blaster x-fi x-treme gamer sound card. I opened up my case, plugged the card into the pci slot, screwed it down and finally plugged in the power cable into the card. Upon bootup I disabled the on board sound in the BIOs, although?I did notice that the optical out slot emitted a redish light, which I'm not sure indicates a problem or not.
Anyways, after booting up the computer detects the new hardware, so I install everything on the vista CD before going online and downloading the latest drivers off the creative website. I'm running Vista 64 bit ultimate btw. After installation I reboot the system and hook my microphone into optical out and my headset into line . I ended up getting sound in my headset just fine, but no matter what I did I could not for the love of me get the mic to work. And that's the sole problem, the little microphone lol. I've read several posts about the same thing, although they date awhile back and I was hoping a solution has emerged since. I've read that on the x-fi control panel line and mic need to NOT be muted, but whenever I unmute on, it mutes the other. I also find the digital I/O setting tab which also may be the culprit, as it has the selection for mic-in/line , but I can't select it!
Otherwise I believe everything is fine.. in the control panel under speech recog options I went into advanced settings under speech recog and set the sb xfi mic to the default... and yes, in the sound tab the mic is the default with everything else being unavaible and the auxiliary being disabled ( is this ok? ) and in playback speakers are the default rather than spdif out - not sure which should be the default. The mic, speakers, and spdif say they are all "working" and although playback works... no recording.
Anyways, I'm sorry for the long post, I just thought I would give as much possible information as?I could to help get a solution... I appreciate any comments and please - please help me fix this thing! lol.

Sounds like you have misapprehended something regarding usage of analog and digital I/Os?
st, you don't plug the microphone into optical output but into FlexiJack port (as it's called). Check the X-Fi User's Guide for more.
2nd, when you wonder that those other choices being not available when one is selected, what makes you think that the card would be able to record more than one source at once through one input port (For Creative cards, this can be possible when using ASIO drivers but, does your card have more than one input port. (if there's a AUX port (internal connector on card board) then maybe you could get both input ports listed w/ ASIO)?
3rd, why the ouput would be defaulted to S/PDIF (you are normally using headphones or acti've analog speakers)?
I don't know this model but if there's a separate Mixer Panel applet for X-Fi (you maybe need to install the Creative Software bundle to get this) then, have you checked your settings there (playback source should be set to MIC and recording source set to MIC)?

  • Beginner: some questions

    Hello all,
I am just a beginner for EJB, and writing a simple example of EJB. Some questions confuse me.
    1.     about server
I just use JDK1.3.1 and JSDKEE1.3, is it all right? Do I need another things, for instance, weblogic ( what is this?)?
    2.     about deployment
I wrote some code( CMP) include: home interface, remote interface, implement class, and primary key. Now , deploy it? Use C:\j2sdkee1.3\bin\deploytool command, is it?
I thought every EJB need a XML deployment descriptor, my question is: I write this by myself or use deploytool?
    3.     about datebase
I notice some example use Cloudscape, is this database? Whether can I use another database, for instance, MS Access? If I can, how to access it in CMP, and what is the Database JNDI Name( if I use MS Access) when I deploy using deploytool?
    4.     about direction
if I finish coding, then compile, and deploy, now, is it OK? I mean, I should move some file to special direction? (I remember the .class file is placed in special direction when I use servlets. )(suppose: I work in C:\mybean. Every file in it)
    5.     I use JDK1.3.1 and JSDKEE1.3 to write a simple example, do I need anything else in order to achieve EJB?
    Thanks

    1. No you do not need anything other than J2SE 1.3.1 and J2EE SDK 1.3 J2EE SDK 1.3 includes a reference implementation that you can use to do pretty much everything that is J2EE platform standard.
Products such as WebLogic, WebSphere are comercial implementations of J2EE platform specifications. And you would use them for commercial/production quality applications.
See http://java.sun.com/j2ee/faq.html Especially the questions about using reference implementation.
    2. You as a developer write the deployment descriptor and the deployment engineer customizes it if required at deployment time.
    3. You can use JDBC-ODB driver to work with Microsoft Access databse.
    See http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/guide/jdbc/getstart/bridge.doc.html#996747
    4. No. The files go to the right place at deploy time.
    5. No. If you have J2SE 1.3.1 and J2EE SDK 1.3, you arealready on your way to achieving EJBs.

  • AUDIO QUESTION: Running external sound card plus internal sound a once

    Hello,
I have a question about the possibility of operating an external sound card (Line 6 tone port UX1) and operating internal audio at the same time. In system preferences, it just lets me have one or the other.
Is there a workaround or program that would allow me to do this.
It is necessary because I need a cueing output and a master output for djing with my m-audio xsession pro.
    Any suggestions would be great.
    Thanks,
    Lynx

  • Beginner's question:  Using Time Machine with a WD External Drive

    Hello folks,
Could someone help me with some basic questions?
I have a MacBook with Mac OSX 10.5.5. It has Time Machine but I've never used it before. I've just obtained a Western Digital External Hard Drive which is Mac compatible but, I'm told, may not be formatted for Mac.
    1. If that's the case, how do I format it for Mac so that I can use it with my MacBook? Or can I just plug-and-play?
    2. Once ready to use, I'd like to use the external drive for two purposes: (a) to create back-up images of my entire computer using Time Machine, and (b) as a second drive where I can just drag-and-drop selected files when needed (e.g. so that I can put photos in a photo folder on my external instead of on my MacBook hard drive). Will my MacBook let me do this, or will using Time Machine effectively reserve the entire external hard drive for Time Machine and not allow my to drag-and-drop files?
    Thanks! And Happy New Year!

    Question 1:
    1. Launch Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utility folder.
    2. Click the "erase" tab
    3. Select your entire WD disk on the sidebar (the uppermost icon).
    4. Format: "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
    5. Name the Disk
    6. Click on "erase"
    Question 2:
What is the size of your drive? If it is large enough you can partition it but Time Machine backup will "grow". So if it's important to you to save all backups you'll want to give it the whole disk. If not, you can partition the disk at the same time you format it.
Follow the steps here. It will accomplish both Q1 & Q2.
