Beginning Chapter Marker

Hello,
I posted this question earlier and received some helpful info., however, I am still having a problem. To quickly recap, I brought a project from Final Cut Studio, into iDVD (I have DVDSP but still new to this and have not learned to use yet). I created chapter markers in FCP, then exported to a non-self-contained quick time movie, then imported to iDVD. I was told that in order to get rid of the chapter marked 'beginning', (my first chapter in FCP was NOT created in the first second, or the last. It wasn't until about 5 seconds in) to just rename it, after deleting the actual first chapter that I wanted (therefore renaming that one). However, the problem remains that if I do rename it to the first chapter that I want, it starts in the very beginning of the movie, rather than if about the 5th second of the movie, which is where I want it to start, because it matches up to a text frame. Since I now have 4 menu pages, I am only 'allowed' to put music onto 3, therefore leaving the 4th menu pg. with no music. If I did not have this 'beginning' chapter marker, it would have fit onto 3 pgs. I tried deleting it in the 'maps' section, but it did not work, I only got the 'error sound'. Any help w/this would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Hi Kristina
I think I would address the FCP-forum or may be the FCE (though they don't
get DVD-Studio pro in theis bundles).
Not really getting Your problem. I wounder what the first Chapter 5 sec in
should be good for that "Just start from beginning = Play movie" wouldn't do.
The Chapters in iDVD doesn't play an individual Chapter but is just in-points
to the full movie. Selecting one eg Ch.5 will result in a start at Ch5s beginning
playing to the movie end.
If You want a play one Chapter function You only have two alt:
- Use DVD-Studio pro (OK I'm in the same boat - steep learning curve)
- Reduce the movie to iDVD to half size (duration) than include each Chapter
as an individual movie too. Only way in iDVD.
Yours Bengt W

  • Rename/Delete "Beginning" Chapter Marker?

In iMovie '11 (9.0.8) is there a way to either rename or delete the "Beginning" chapter marker it automatically places at the start of your project. I want to use chapter markers in my project, but I don't want one called "Beginning".

    Here's what I do:
When creating my chapter markers in Final Cut I do not create the first marker I want. I set my In and Out points to define the movie, and I move to where the second chapter will be and create that (Dance Two <Chapter>Two) and keep going till I'm done. Export as Quicktime Movie
When I bring the movie into iDVD it creates the correct number of chapters, except the Chapter One is called "Beginning" I just change the name in iDVD .. so I delete "Beginning" type over "Dance One" and that is Chapter One. Save the project to maintain the change.
That way I maintain the correct number of chapters and get the naming I require. BTW, DVD Studio Pro does the same thing .. at least the old version that I use

  • Troubleshooting a Vobulator Error, Line 332 - Chapter Marker Problem? Is Beginning of Timeline OK?

Hi, I am getting the vobulator error on a Encore CS6 project...
    "internal software error: Vobulator\Title Planner|CVOBUPlanner.cpp, line 332"
I have spent a couple hours tonight reading all the forum discussions I can on this trying to troubleshoot my problem.
First question I have is regarding the advice of "no chapter markers on the end of a timeline".
Does the beginning of my timeline qualify as an "end" that I should not have a chapter marker on?
I have one timeline in this project with about 18 chapters in it.
The first chapter is at the beginning of the timeline - seems logical to me to put a Chapter 1 in at the start.
But maybe that is wrong, since the begining of the timeline IS the starting point of the DVD?
But how can you label the start (i.e. I want to lable it "Act 1") if you don't use a chapter marker?
Also I noticed the Chapter 1 Marker got moved in to the 1 second point after transcoding. I set the chapter in premiere pro cs6 at the 0:00:00 point.
Some details on my Encore CS6 Project...
1 Video Timeline in Encore, Dynamically Linked from Premiere Pro CS6
    No Menus
    No Other graphics
Intent is to Auto play on loading, and stop at end action, with chapters in between for skipping around by user.
I get this error when I try to build a DVD Image. I get no errors when building a Bluray image.
    Premiere Pro CS6 Project...
raw video was shot as 1080p24 video from a Canon Vixia HF S21
a few cross disolve transition at beginning and end
a few graphics at beginning (but I have successfully used all of these same graphics in other Encore projects without error).
    -Thanks for your help.

Yes, not having a chapter marker at the end only refers to the end that is at the end. Not the end that is at the other end.
While logically the question is a good one, Encore puts a chapter marker at the beginning whether you want one or not. And one way to get this problem is to think  you've faked Encore out by putting the first chapter marker two frames in.
You can label Encore's Chapter 1. I thought you had to wait till you were in Encore, but in CS6 at least, you can name it in Premiere,
If you are seeing a chapter at one second; you may have 2. In a test, Encore does not move the marker when I transcode.
Be sure you are not seeing a poster frame marker.
And it may be a different chapter marker or some other problem that is throwing the error.
I assume there is only one Premiere sequence on your one timeline, correct?
From your description, I would look for an accidental chapter marker too close to another one.
I would start over with a new Encore project.

  • Chapter marker thumbnails getting duplicated, out of order (FCPX 10.1.4)

Group - I use FCPX to compile home movies of my kids, the pets, etc. I use footage from a Canon HD camcorder and an iPhone 6+. I import them into FCPX, trim, transition, maybe throw in some music, and usually put in 40 or so stills (JPEGS) at the end for a slide show.
The project I'm working on now is around 2.5h long after editing and transitions. I put chapter markers at the beginning of each scene, and then drag the pin to set a custom chapter marker thumbnail.
The issue - no matter what I do, I can't seem to get ALL of the thumbnails sorted properly. Meaning, I get one or two out of order, and numerous ones duplicate. I've rebooted, trashed prefs (opt-com start), copied all the clips into a new project and re-rendered, and even deleted them all and manually applied them all again. There are roughly 36 or 37 chapters in this project. I tend to get a different result each time, but with the same general problem.
Sadly, iMovie worked pretty flawlessly for me, but I thought I'd enjoy the added capabilities of FCPX. The rendering time for this movie on a one year old iMac with 24GB RAM is around 7 hours at 720p, so as you can imagine, it's not been a fun project. I've attached a screenshot of the issue on my AppleTV for reference. I've seen a lot of history with this problem, though many threads proclaimed it 'solved'. I'd disagree. Anyone have any thoughts on what I am doing wrong, or is this just more stellar quality control from Apple?
PS - Are there any recommended alternatives to FCPX? I'm noticing I use fewer and fewer Apple-branded apps, I'm starting to see a pattern here.... :^(

Discs are not my top-priority here, but I remember this rules (for iDVD):
    The Rules of Chapter Markers:
*Make sure no chapter markers are within two seconds of the start or end of the timeline.
*Make sure no chapter markers are within a transition.
*Make sure no chapter markers are within two seconds of the end of a transition.
*Make sure you do not have the "Share selected Clips" option checked when preparing to share to iDVD
maybe, these rules were not by limitations of software, but by 'standard'?
If you test it, try to what happens when you 'violate' these rules ...........

  • Tutorial on Creating Chapter Marks is Incorrect

I just discovered that by following the tutorial for adding chapter marks to a movie you end up with chapter marks that are duplicated in the chapter popup menu of the QT movie window.
Instead of "Add to Selection and Scale" as indicated in the tutorial, you need to select "Add to Movie". Once I did this, the chapter marks behaved correctly and did not duplicate. You just need to be sure that the length of your text track is the same length as the video and audio tracks.
Hope this helps someone from tearing their hair out. Luckily I discovered this before tearing all of mine out.

    Not so fast.
There's another problem, to do with the duration of the chapter track movie before it is copied and pasted into the main movie.
The tutorial tells us that when we export the timecode text file to work on, we should set fractions of seconds to 1/30th. I understand that this is because this is the way the Inspector shows time. Which, indeed, seems to be the case. (I just want to make it clear that I did this.)
Next step: in my text file I fill in my timecodes for the chapters, including the last timecode, which matches the movie's duration. I save the text file, open it in Quicktime and... whaa? The duration is fractionally longer. I select all and paste into my main movie and "Add to movie" and, yes, the chapter track pushes out the end of the movie. Well, no worries, I can trim the end of the movie.
But this is not enough! I also find that some of the chapters begin at the wrong points. Really odd. It seems to be chapter points early in the movie rather than later, which is counterintuitive since one would think that a timecode error would aggregate over the length of the movie.
The only way I've found to overcome this issue is to launch QuickTime Player 6 and use this instead. It opens text files with chapter information and creates chapter "movies" of the right length. When pasted into the main movie, chapter markers fall in exactly the right place.
I think I'd better make a bug report. Anyone else come across this?

  • Blu-Ray Stops Playing at 1st Chapter Marker

I am battling an issue I cannot get my arms around.  I have a 3-hour video that I have sent From Premier Pro (CS4) to Encore via Adobe Link.
In Encore I rendered the video as a Blu-Ray image and set the play parameters to make the disc auto-playing.  That is the DVD has no menu start page.  The First Play is set to the beginning of the timeline, and the End action is STOP.
I do not have any Overrides set at all in my Encore project.  I have checked both the disc and the timeline panels, and Override is set to "Not Set" in both cases.
I have Encore Chapter Markers at the origin of the timeline and at every day thereafter of an 18 day trip.
The .iso image file produced by Encore was then copied to discs using CyberLink Power2Go.
When the (Blu-Ray) DVD is put into a player, it starts fine but then terminates play at the 1st marker after play starts (this is actually the 2nd timeliine marker, as the first is at the origin, or zero point) about 9 minutes into the DVD.
When I examine the Stream file  (BDMV>STREAM>00000.m2ts) on the disc, it does contain the entire video, and it plays just fine.
Thus I am assuming that something has not correctly constructed the playlist scripts causing the playback to start at the beginning but STOP at the first Chapter marker it encounters after starting play.
Any thought on how to debug and fix this issue will be GREATLY appreciated!!
PS - I just opened this Encore project and used the Preview function to play the video.  The preview STOPS also at the first chapter marker (9 minutes into the video) exactly as in the finished DVD.
I can find nothing unusual about this marker, but it is obviously the culprit!

OK.  I think I found the issue but not sure why!
When I set the project up in Encore in the Flowchart window I set the Timeline icon (linked to by the disc as the 1st play item) to an End Action of STOP.
Since it was the entire timeline that was my 1st play asset, I assumed that the STOP End Action would be at the end of the DVD.
BUT, apparently it Stops when it encounters the first Marker.
If I go to the Timeline in Encore and click on the individual Markers, all of them but the first one have an End Action of "Not Set" but the first one has "Stop".
I have just changed that 1st (at the timeline origin) Marker's End Action to "Not Set" and the last Marker to "Stop"
I'm guessing this will fix it.  Will report back after I preview things.

  • Export with chapter marker to iDVD

Ok something has slipped from my memory.
I'm trying to create a DVD of my recent project. I created 12 chapter markers with the first being 00:00:15:01 into it. I exported it to Quicktime movie (not conversion) I selected add Audio and Video and include Chapter Markers. I made it not self contained. But no chapters appeared in iDVD? I tried including All Markers and also tried including Studio Pro markers without success.
    Any suggestions?
    John

I've exported a sequence with chapter markers using Quicktime conversion and all the chapter markers show up except for the last one. Looking back at the original sequence in FCE, this last chapter marker is the only one that is a pink marker on the clip rather than a green marker on the timeline. I've tried several times to delete this chapter marker and re-create it. Each time, it reappears as a pink marker tied to the clip. Is there a way to force it into the timeline? The only difference between this chapter marker and the others is this one is located at the beginning of the credits at the end of a movie which were created using the Boris plug-in for a scrolling title. All the others appear correctly in the timeline were tied to normal video clips.
Would the fact that I'm creating a chapter marker in the part of the sequence created using the plug-in cause the marker to behave differently?

  • Duplicated chapter marks

I've just found out about the ability to add chapter marks to QuickTime movies, something which is incredibly useful and should be exploited more often. But I can't seem to get it to work properly...
Let's say I create a plain text document with my chapter names called "text1", and open that file in QuickTime. When I 'select all', copy, go to my movie, select 'Add to Selection and Scale', go into Movie Properties, choose Other Settings > Chapters [etc...] the little menu that pops up in the timeline shows all of my chapter names perfectly. At this point, I haven't exported "text1" from QuickTime as a text-to-text document.
When I do export "text1" as a text-to-text document and open "text1" in TextEdit, I get a list of my chapter names and timecodes - I change these timecodes to the corresponding chapter name, and save the file as "text2".
When I open "text2" in QT and go through 'select all', copy, Movie Properties [etc...] the little menu that pops up in the timeline seems to duplicate most (but not all) of my chapter marks. So for example the list would show:
    Titles
    Titles
    Introduction
    Introduction
    Jo
    Jo
    Claire
    Journey
    Journey
    Arrival
    Arrival
    Dinner
    Party
    Afterwards
Clicking on the 'duplicate' chapter name takes me to a point in the movie that I haven't specified. This happens *every single time* I put in the correct timecodes to the corresponding chapter name; with every single movie I try, and it's really quite frustrating.
I know it's a long post - but any help would be much appreciated from you lovely people
    17" iMac G4 800Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   80GB, 768MB RAM

    1. Yes, I'm saving as a .txt file.
    2. Maybe I should have explained it a bit better; I think you might have misunderstood me. The first time I went through the procedure of added chapter markers, everything seemed to go okay, no error messages etc. I noticed that the chapter menu appeared in the timeline, so thought I'd have a look to see it was working okay before I actually saved the file - it was then I noticed that most of the chapter names had been duplicated.
So then I decided to try again from the beginning; creating a new .txt file with my chapter names, opening and exporting that .txt file from QuickTime. At this point I'd normally open that new file in TextEdit and input the relvant timecodes; but I decided to import that file into my movie, *as if* I'd already put in the relevant timecodes. When I did this, my chapter names appeared fine, no duplications etc. Thinking that everything was okay now, I'd open this .txt file in TextEdit and put in the relevant timecodes, save, and use that file in QT - but the chapter names are duplicated in QT.
It seems that my chapter names are only ever duplicated whenever I put in my own timecodes in the .txt file (after exporting as a text-to-text in QT). and yes, I'm using QT Pro 7.04, repaired permission etc I do appreciate your help in this.

  • Chapter marker ignored!

    Hello.
Chapter marker (chapter 2) set at specific time code.
When the DVD project is built, output file VTS_01_2.vob does not start at chapter marker.
I wish to have beginning of Title number 2, (VTS_01_2.vob) start at chapter marker 2.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    William Johnston

VTS_01_2.VOB is not related to the chapters at all.
Don't even think about trying to make a chapter marker align exactly with the start of this file, as you ain't gonna do it.
The VOB files are split into 1Gb chunks, although in the actual playback they are all percieved as a single file.
Title number 2 is *not* VTS_01_2.VOB. That is part 2 of title 1, as written to the DVD. (The _2 does not mean "Chapter 2")

  • Chapter Marker Question

Since you can't do chapter markers in iMovie'08 anymore, how do you insert them into iDVD where you want them? I only found the "selection of movie", "advance", "set chapter markers" and there you can give a set interval. Well, that is stupid since I want a chapter marker at the beginning of a new chapter! How is that done now?

They were thinking that the DVD is dead. (which of course is wrong.)
It's almost right. Apple's just a little too early. Online content distribution isn't quite there yet. Going forward, I'm willing to bet that most video will be distributed online (purchases and rentals) once the mess of DRM gets sorted out. Rather than storing video on DVDs, people will just leave them on a network attached hard drive or computer and view them on their Apple TV or similar network aware video device. There will be no need to physically find the DVD that has a particular file on it when you can browse your entire video library (purchased, rented, home-made) on your network.
Music is already following this trend. Lots of people buy music online now, and once DRM is out of the way, many more will follow. There is no need (or desire) to carry around tonnes of CDs. You can have your entire music library on your Mac, iPod, etc. Video is slower to follow because of the higher bandwidth requirements, but it will eventually follow. Kudos to Apple for seeing this trend, but shame on them for trying to coerce us into adopting it before we're ready!

  • Wrong picture ICON for chapter MARKER!

I'm trying to make a wedding DVD for a friend, I've never had a problem before but it won't play the correct chapter thumbnail in the template that matches the correct marker made. I'm using "silver wedding".
I edited it in FCP using chapter markers, at first they wouldn't even load correctly when I put it in iDVD (only the words, no picture at all) now I got it to work by turning off the "loop" but now 2 of the 15 chapters show the WRONG thumbnail icon that goes with that chapter. It's completely arbitrary, I see no logical pattern. And here's the funny part, when I select that chapter, it's the correct chapter, just showing the wrong picture icon for that chapter. Any thoughts?

    Hi
    My thoughts
    a. Trash iDVD pref file
    b. In FCP - NO Chapter mark at the very beginning ! iDVD Has to do this by it self.
    c. From FCP I do
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file (Chapter marks set to be exported !)
    • Not self contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QuickTime Conversion - IMPORTANT
    d. There is an iDVD BUG ! If You make an iDVD project - then go back to movie
to alter/correct - iDVD will notice and ask to Update or Cancel - NEITHER WORKS
Medicine - Start a new iDVD project and re-do.
    e. Try another theme - to figure out if this can be the culprit
    f. free space on internal start-up hard disk > 25Gb ?

  • Is there a way to directly connect/group a chapter marker to the first frame of a clip?

I have over 6 hours of SD clips on my timeline.   I ended up having to add more clips throughout the timeline.   I was able to "group" the titles to their respecttive clips so I don't have to deal with moving them when I move their clip.   Now I am curious to know if there is a way to link the Chapter Markers to the first frame of their respective clips so that when I move the clip, so the Chapter Marker moves with it?
BTW, I know it is best to put the Chapter Markers in last b4 I go on to Encore.   While I was working in Encore I realized it would be more meaningfull to create and add several After Effects "AVI" files between several of my clips.   This work in progress would be a lot easier if I did not have to keep re-adjusting the Chapter Markers everytime I modified the timeline.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Duane

Thanks for your suggestion about using the clip markers.   I tried them on a test clip.   They did not come down to the timeline.  Besides, I would want them labeled.   Right now all my clips have a marker that is labeled with the date and location.   The chapter markers are labeled the same way.   I have a spread sheet that list the dates of all the Chapter Markers which connect to the dates on the menu.     This seems like an old fashion way to do things for such a sophisticated software.   Maybe I should put in a feature suggestion to Adobe.   I would do that, but I am afraid that I may embarrass myself as being the only one that ever asked for something like that.   Or they would accuse me of misusing their software.
    Again, thanks for your suggestion.

  • I want to create a "Play All" chapter marker that will play the video from start to finish in addition to the standard chapters I have-I guess I can auto start the DVD but would prefer a button-how and where would I put this "play all" marker??

I want to create a "Play All" chapter marker that will play the video from start to finish in addition to the standard chapters I have…I guess I can auto start the DVD but would prefer a button…how and where would I put this "play all" marker?? Thanks..

The start chapter button is a play the whole movie button regardless of how many other markers you have.
Once a DVD starts playing it continues to the end.
Chapters marker simply gives the viewer a place to start playback whether it be the start, middle or near the end.

  • Chapter Marker Image Problems

    Hi,
I created a movie and set chapter marker. For images I moved the image slider to different locations than default. After rendering the movie chapters work fine but the images are wrong. The same image sometimes appears a two adjacent chapters and other times the image for the next chapter appears at the one before. I didn't have that problem before so I don't know if it is me doing something wrong or if the bug came with the recent 10.0.9 update.
    Anyone noticed the same?

Problem is solved. FCPX inserts a chapter marker at movie start which caused the problem. I set that marker manually and changed the chapter image to the position I wanted it to be. Now all images correspond to the appropriate chapter markers.

Try using the "Save as..." option to place the chaptered H.264/AAC movie in a MOV file container.

Not as far as playback is concerned in iTunes or on the iPod.
And if yes how can I transfer my exported-for-ipod movie from the movie folder to the podcast folder (in the ipod).
An file created using the "Movie to iPod" export option is (supposedly) compatible with playback on an iPod. This process does not, however, create a Podcast. To turn you iPod compatible file into a Podcast, run it through an application like Podcast Maker. This will mark the file internals properly, upload the file to your server, and take care of XML/RSS requirements.
