Beginning of startup chime is cut off

I just purchased an Intel iMac 20" and when I press the power button, the very beginning of the startup chime is cut off.
I haven't installed Boot Camp or any firmware updates yet - this is a virgin computer.
Any ideas?

Oddly enough, it was when I installed that firmware update that the chime went away. Funny how something that we all took for grantedd becomes a thread when it goes away. LOL

  • How to I get the iPad to recognize a number beginning with 0 without it cutting off the 0

How do I get the iPad to recognize a number beginning with 0 without dropping the 0.  And how do I get the iPad to recognize a 4 (birth year) or 5 (zip code) digit number with adding a comma delineating it to thousands?

    Hi,
Because the iPad requires more power than from a normal USB port can supply therefore you can not charge an iPad using ONE USB port on a laptop/PC.  Please try this free utility, many HP users say it works:

  • Sound at beginning of slide gets cut off after publishing

    Hi,
Any idea why a perfectly good slide might have just the
beginning of the sound consistently cutting off the beginning of
the slide? It didn't happen in Preview, but now it's happening
since I've published it to the Web.
Also, I found when playing it in Safari on a Mac this morning
that suddently the audio got ahead of the slides, then paused, the
slides slowly caught up, and then started syncing again. Any idea
    what might be causing this?

    Rick,
Once again, a huge help. I would never have thought of daisy
chaining as the solution and after reading your link, I can see why
this is probably the culprit. I am wondering...I have a three
button "menu" early on that either continues or jumps to the end of
the slides to show a couple of short pieces, (about the author,
management tracking). I want to have all three accessible at any
point in the slideshow, so I'm wondering how daisy chaining them
might effect this, if at all. Could someone in the third part of
the daisy chain easily jump back to the first? Or instead, should I
move the short pieces into the first piece? I guess I'm wondering
if daisy chaining allows the broswer to unload the previous ones to
free up memory, and therefore not allowing the user to access the
earlier pieces. Thanks again. You've been a great help...and on New
    Year's Day at that!

  • Abruptly cuts off during startup

I have a Lenovo 3000 N200 0769 BWG and have been having a lot o fproblems alately. My laptop started ABRUPTLY cutting off (like power loss) during wake from sleep or normal startup. Always just as it got to the windows screen. You also notably heard the HDD click as power was cut.
*this happens even if laptops cold
*laptop does get noticably hot- it didnt used to.
*Also thoroughly cleaned it out with compressed air. No difference
*ASSUMED it was HDD failure so installed new HDD 320GB and bought Win7 ultimate - ok at first then started doing it again (i think after updates*)
*when going through the failed startups, it eventually loads the startup repair, identifys some faults and mentions "bad-driver", then it will startup fine... until restarted/shut down again!
Also in my device manager I have two "BASE SYSTEM DEVICE" listed under other devices. Windows cannot find device drivers.  -- I would like to know what drivers I need for these or what they are please?
Ive tried disabling those two devices via device manager then restart but get same problem.
Really in need of some help with this as I cannot afford a new laptop.
    INFORMATION FROM ACTION CENTRE
Some of the errors I've had relating to this:
windows failed to start because of missing system files
windows failed to start because of a problem with the hard disc
windows was not able to determine the cause of the problem
these messages are logged after the failed startups where it cuts off and these is always a "windows was not properly shut down" message before them
Really need some real Lenovo Tech help on this please!
    Will, England

Not sure if this helps, but, I've experienced similar problems.
Computer shuts down suddenly and randomly.
Boot always takes three attempts, everytime.
    Corrective action so far:
Restored computer to factory state (used Lenovo recovery utility)
No improvement - still shutsdown .
Next step - update BIOS - found an update on the Lenovo support site.
I look forward to any other suggestions from others.

Usually if you have some kind of hardware failure there is some beeping during POST or most motherboards now have LED indicators to produce and error message based on the type of failure
So if its bad memory, not place properly, mismatched, processor not inserted properly, mismatched voltage or voltage connector not present etc it beeps or generates the error id.
Power supplies can be tested for failure. There are some walk throughs for testing just them with a switch, paperclip or a jumper (I'd suggest not doing this if you are not familiar with the dangers of electricity).
Memory can be tested with memory diagnostics programs like Memtest+
Processors can overheat if the proper precautions have not been taken usually you will get a POST beep or error code for that.
If the motherboard has no response then do the basics first:
Check power connectors and power supply. Once you determine that is not the case move on to other items like graphics cards in all the way or memory.

  • Audio clips cutting off at the beginning, after replacing audio.

I have received an fla for a complex game, and have been directly replacing the audio clips in it with new ones with the same file name. The game randomly chooses themes, displaying text and a corresponding audio clip.  After replacing the old files with the new ones, out of 20 audio clips, about 6 of them get cut off at the beginning. There is no discernible difference in the length of the clips, or empty space at the beginning between the original audio files and the new ones.
Is it possible that there is something happening in the actionscript that could be causing the problem? The fla calls a file calls Themes.as, this is the code in the file, case the answer is in there somewhere:

If you have not upgraded to version 7 you should do that.
If you have upgraded to Version 7, be sure to do the updates to 7.0.5
Go to the Help menu and select 'About Adobe Presenter' to see what version, if it is 7.0, to 7.0.2 you need to update it
drop down the help menu again and you will see an 'update' option.
you need to install in order - 7.0.1, then 7.0.2 then 7.0.5 - you cannot install all at once
another thing you might want to do is open the file you are working on in 7.0.5 snd save it out with a new filename in a new location to combat that pesky problem of the 'media.ppcx' file disappearing....

  • Mini Cuts off after startup

My 1.42GHz mini, 512 RAM SuperDrive + Bluetooth will not stay booted. It goes through the startup process fine after I press the button, then cuts off just as the Finder shows up. I noticed that the LED on the front sort of pulses as it's starting- blinking from bright to not-so-bright. It ran just fine for a couple of weeks, and I just shut it down overnight and tried to boot it in the morning.
I have the original Cinema Dispay 20" LCD with an ADC-DVI adapter.

Try to boot off the Install CD and run an Apple Hardware Teat, but it looks like yor mini is going to sleep! Try resetting the PMU:

  • Beginning of iTunes Home Sharing tracks cut off

I recently set up a new Apple TV 3, which is connected via Wi-Fi to my home network and to my TV & receiver via HDMI. I have turned on Home Sharing in iTunes on my iMac (connected to the same network via Ethernet), and am using the Computer function on the ATV to listen to music from my iMac. However, I noticed that the very beginning of songs played this way are cut off. It's only for a split second, but still annoying, and rewinding back to the beginning of the track doesn't seem to fix the problem. Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Hello Alex,
Congratulations on your new Apple TV.  It sounds like you are experiencing a playback issue when streaming music from your computer.  I found an article with steps that I think would help with this issue.
I recommend reviewing the full article below, but I think steps 4-7 are specifically useful for what you described:

  • Half a chime (cuts off), no video, no boot

My G5 just crashed launching a Protools session. It will no longer boot. It chimes - but the chime sound is cut off half way. The fans power up and I can hear the drives spin up. I've removed PCI cards, swapped drives, swapped RAM... nothing helps. No video, no response from the keyboard (trying a PRAM reset for example).
Did I just loose a logic board? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    more info:
It just booted after letting it sit for almost an hour.
Passed Techtool hardware tests. I just started another loop....
    Crash!
Just shut down with no display or fans - light still on though.
Something overheating here? I'm hoping someone has an opinion as to logic board or CPU failure - or something else (temp sensor?).
Any help or comments would be very much appreciated.
    What the...
I hit the power button (expecting it to either shut off or make me hold it for 10 sec ts shut down) and it acted like it woke from sleep and continued with the Techtool test where it left off.
Then it shut down again after 15 sec or so.
    Repeat... same.
    Opinions please!

The first few frames are getting cut off, and I suspect it's because Encore sets the first chapter marker automatically to what it thinks is the first fully bright frame. Is this what's happening, and if so, how can I prevent that, and therefore make the disk play from the black beginning?
    thanks,
    - Michael M.

Encore always sets the first chapter in a timeline at time zero...only the poster frame for the first chapter can ever not be at time zero.
Why you are seeing what you are seeing, I'm not sure. Have you checked it on multiple DVD players? How does it look in a software DVD player?

  • Sound cut off at beginning of track

When clicking on "Play Movie" button in menu, the transition takes place, then the DVD cuts to the movie. However, the first second or two of the sound is not heard. This seems to simulate properly, but when the disc is burned and played in a real DVD player, the cutoff of the sound takes place.
Is there any way to tell DVD Studio Pro to wait for a defined time after executing the transition, before beginning the play of the audio and video tracks?

You sure it's not the audio playback system you're using? I our studio the big system has some sort of buffer. No matter what I do the first couple of seconds of audio are cut off. That's the only place it happens, out of thousands of DVDs played.
You can sneak a piece of black video with silence and place it in front of your primary video right in the track. Pretty foolproof.

  • How can I turn off the startup chime?

The chime sounds from the internal speakers at full blast no matter what volume I have set the computer to. Is there any way to turn this off or at least quiet it? It keeps waking my baby up, even when she's sleeping upstairs!

    Julia,
I have used the System Preference pane that Neil recommended for over a year successfully. It is good to hear the startup chime, even at a much lower volume, because it lets you know that your Mac has passed the built-in Power On Self Test.
I'm sure that mr fish didn't mean for his post to be as condescending as it seems. You know, telling a woman where her mute key is located! He is new here in the Intel discussions and has been having issues fitting in. He recently learned how to color the text of his posts and isn't aware of how childish and distracting they have become. But he is coming along and is a welcome new personality here in Using Your Intel-based iMac.
But, mr. fish aside, the tip he gave you about muting your Mac before turning it off should work! So the fact that you report that it doesn't, leads me to believe that there may be some maintenance issues with your new Mac. I want to give you the link to the X Labs. Dr. Smoke, the author, is a long-time, regular contributor here in the Apple Discussions and he has put together a great site that explains well how to keep a Mac & Mac OS X running in good condition. When you have time you can check it out and see if there are some things that you could be doing that will keep things running smoothly.
Something that will help folks here in the forum when you ask for advice is if you go to your Profile and expand a bit about your Mac; model, OS X version, amount of RAM, etc.

  • How can I turn off the startup chime on my new iMAC (Intel based)?

    Hi,
Every time I turn on my iMac the startup chime is very loud.  It doesn't matter whether I lower or mute the volume prior to shutting it down, the startup chime volume is unpredictable.  Is there any way possible to control it without having to download a third party program?
    Thanks!

    Thank you for your response.
I seem to get a lot of conflicting information whether you should shut down a computer at night or simply put it to sleep.  However, that is another discusssion
As to the startup chime, ideally I would like to be able to control the volume at least (not mute it).  I will still be able to hear the chime when the iMac starts up, but right now it sounds like a church bell going off in my apartment whenever I turn on the computer!

  • Turning off the startup chime?

Anyone knows how to turn off the startup chime? It's a bit embarassing if I start my Mac during classes...

    You're welcome anytime.
Please do keep in mind that the startup sound isn't just there to 'annoy'
It's more vital reason for excistence is to inform you when there are problems during startup, like bad RAM or the like.
So once in a while or when not at school, you should enable it again, just to make sure everythings still ok.
Have Fun and thanks for the star.
    Stefan
