Behavior of ADC Display on G5 via ADC Connection

Hi,
As I might be 'upgrading' to a G5 and currently have a 17" ADC monitor I was wondering if anyone could confirm the functionality of the ADC monitors connected to a G5's graphics card via the ADC port.
i.e.
* Does the monitor power button still turn the computer on?
* Does the power button sleep and wake up the computer?
* Does the power button 'pulse' when the G5 is asleep?
All of the above happens on my current G4.
Thanks very much for your help.
James.

Hi Klaus
tries step 3 but no joy. Can't go any further then that as it is a new 27" iMac and you have to take the screen out to get at all the workings and I think thats a pretty specialist job! Looks like it's going to be a trip to the Genius Bar!!
Thanks anyway

  • 20inch cinema display not working via ADC?

Heres the specs on my Mac
    Dual 450mhz Gigabit Ethernet Model
    OS X 10.3.9
    1.38GB SDRAM
ATI 128 video card -----> now nvidia GeForce 4 MX
    The Story:
I have had my G4 since it was new. I bought it with the 17" Studio Display and it has worked fine. and still works fine with both video cards mentioned above. I bought a used 20" Cinema Display. I saw the display working off an ADC connection before I even paid the guy. I brought the monitor home and tried it out. It loaded to the grey apple screen and then went blank. After some research I found out the ATI 128 only supports up to 17" display. So I got a nVidia GeForce4 MX, put it in my machine, fired it up and I get NO DISPLAY AT ALL! I plugged the 17" back in and it works just fine.
Also the guy I purchased it with threw in the apple DVI to ADC adapter, so I plugged the monitor into my Powerbook 1.33mhz and everything works just fine in mirror and dual display modes.
I am stumped. Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Jus

    Hey guys,
I don't know if this will help, but here goes. I bought my 20" Cinema Display with the first G5s to come out ~ 9/2003. Lightning came in on my G5 thru the ethernet port and it wouldn't boot up. Frustrated, I unhooked everything and let the setup sit.
About a month ago I bought a G4 off ebay. It had a video card that had a DVI and VGA port--I guess it was an aftermarket upgrade. I was itching to try my 20" Cinema Display on it. So I bought the Apple DVI to ADC adapter ($99 thing). Hooked it up and sweet, screen real estate for days!
Came home a couple of days later, woke the G4 from sleep, and the Cinema Display stayed blank....f*!
I was p**d! I spent nearly $1200 for the thing, plus $99 for the adapter. I tried unplugging and plugging the adapter/display/G4 per the adapter instructions, still blank screen.
Well, today I had 3 different 22" LCDs in my newegg.com shopping cart and was ready to fork out $200-$300 for a new LCD with a DVI connection. I was convinced it was the adapter. So I thought I would try to hook the setup up 1 more time before I pulled out my debit card. I looked at the instructions again, and noticed apple pictured plugging the power cord into the adapter box first, then plugging the power cord coming from the adapter into the power source, then plugging the display into the adapter box, then plug the DVI cord from the adapter into the G4s video card (DVI-I port), then finally plug the USB cord from the adapter into the G4.
I powered up, and low and behold, I worked!!!
I'm typing this post on my 20" Cinema Display right now.
Only two things I can figure is setting the G4 and display to sleep is no good. The display and/or adapter seems not to work well with the sleep function. So I set System Preferences to never sleep for the display and the G4. Second, could there be a sensor where the power cord plugs into the adapter box? That's the only step I did different this time.
Sorry so long winded but if I can help out i want to 'cause I know how frustrated and sick I was about a having a kickin' $1200 display on the blink.
It could be just a coincidence, I'll repost if the Display goes blank again.
    peace,
    Danny

  • Mac Pro Adc Displays

    Hi
Since Friday i have a Mac Pro.
I connect my old Adc Cinema Display, with an ADC-DVI Adapter.
    Everything work fine.
I have another 17" ADC Display.
Is it possible to connect two ADC Displays, with two ADC-DVI Adaperts to the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT Graphiccard without a problem?
    Thanks
    Greetings from Vienna

I'm seeing a lot of this.
    Pay attention closely.
If you have an ADC display and you want to connect it to the new Mac Pro, you must buy a different adapter. The ones supplied with the Mac Pro do not connect an ADC display to a DVI Mac Pro. You need to buy one that has a power supply and a USB port. DrBott and Apple make them.

  • G4 ADC display not powering on

I have a 400mhz AGP graphics G4 that at some point had a video card upgrade to a card with only VGA out. A friend recently gave me an Apple 15" Studio Display so I bought what I thought was a replacement for the original card, an AGP ATI Rage Pro 128 16mb. The card I bought has ADC and VGA out and when i connect the display it won't power on. The display will power on when connected to a G5 with ADC out and the VGA out on the card works on a VGA monitor so I believe both the card and the flat screen are working fine. Looking into it a little further I realize now that the stock card that was originally on the machine had DVI/VGA outputs. Is this where my problem lies?

    Hi-
Looking into it a little further I realize now that the stock card that was originally on the machine had DVI/VGA outputs.
The Rev 1 AGP graphics G4 Sawtooth cannot support ADC, as there is no power provided to the ADC port via the AGP slot.
Is this where my problem lies?
    Yes.
To use ADC monitors on a Sawtooth, you need a DVI port equipped card, and DVI to ADC adapter.

    PowerMac G4 400 MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Gary,
The G4 AGP graphics model is pre-ADC and its motherboard will not support a video card with a native ADC port. The ADC ports on such cards draw their power and USB feed via an extra leg on the card that fits into an extra slot at one end of the AGP slot on the computer motherboard. Your computer does not have this extra slot.
To run an ADC display off your computer, you can run a video card with a DVI output, then use a DVI to ADC adaptor such as this one:
    http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0111-DVAD
You can use VGA to ADC adaptors, but they are much more expensive (than a DVI to ADC adaptor plus another video card), and don't give as good a result.
    Cheers!

  • ADC Display and Mavericks compatibility

After installing Mavericks I can't set the brightness of a 20 inches Cinema Display (ADC) anymore, options are just gone.
Anyone experienced the same? I already have reset the PRAM but it didn't fix it.
I'm using a Macbook 5,5 with an Apple DVI to ADC converter.

    Hi,
I have the same problem. Mac Pro 3,1 with EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, 30''-ACD plays fine including brightness control, but 2nd screen (old 23''-ACD via ADC-DVI-Adapter) shows no brightness control. Has been all ok under Mountain Lion before.
I just filed a bug report at Apple's feedback page.

  • How to connect an Apple ADC display to a new Mac mini?

Has anyone found a way to connect the brand new mac mini, either HDMI or micro to an older Apple display that has an ADC connector on it? Where to buy - the Apple store does not have their DVI to ADC adapter. Thanks.

I found one here for $139:

Cinema Display (clear) with DVI/ADC box doesn't work with MacBook Pro when plugged in with a dvi to mini dvi cable. Any ideas what to do to make it work? I lugged the 23" 2500 miles into the wilderness and I need help

Okay, here's an update: the DVI to ADC adapter does work with the Apple displays that I have tried, but it won't work with the Formac. I have tried multiple time to contact them, but to no avail... they don't even respond to threats of posting my opinion of them, which is this:
DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM FORMAC! They make quality products, but their customer service is a big time joke! They won't take care of you.

  • Dual ADC displays and a vid card w/ no ADC ?

    Hi.
I've got a PowerMac G4 with an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro vid. card. I bought it when I purchased my 17" Apple display not knowing that the Apple display had its own connector that required me to but a $99 adaptor that also requires a power cord!
Anyway, my old CRT (that acted as my 2nd display on the G4) finally died. I purchased a nice 15" Apple display, but apparently forgot to consider the ADC connection.
I need a cheap, fast solution.
I've got a G4 with the 9800 Radeon which has a DVI and VGA connection.
By the way, does having 128MB DDR of video ram help with rendering time??
Ok, back to the original question.
I also have the original video card that came with the PowerMac G4 1.2mhz Quicksilver. I believe it's an 9000 Radeon. It's got an ADC and VGA connection.
How can I setup a dual display on the G4 with the two Apple displays? Both are ADC and neither card has (2) ADC connections.
I've got two ADC to DVI convertors and I have the VGA to DVI convertor that came with my 17" apple display, but the DVI end doesnt match the DVI end on the 2nd ADC to DVI convertor.
Any suggestions? Is there a dual ADC video card?

    Hi
As far as I'm aware, the Radeon 9000 that came as the stock graphics card in certain PowerMacs had an ADC connector and a DVI connector. It also came with a DVI to VGA adapter. If this is the case you should be able to attach one monitor directly to the ADC connector and the other to the DVI connector using the $99 DVI to ADC adapter. You'd be losing the benefit of the Radeon 9800 though.
Unfortunately there aren't any graphics cards with dual ADC connectors, as the card (and AGP slot) would have to provide enough juice to power two monitors. The options seem to be:
    1. One AGP card with an ADC connector and DVI connector, which would require one DVI to ADC adapter, such as the Radeon 9000.
    2. One AGP card with two DVI connectors, which would require two DVI to ADC adapters, such as the Radeon 9600 retail version. Mines worked perfectly, although there do seem to be problems with it in certain Quicksilvers and Digital Audio G4s.
    3. One AGP card with a DVI connector, which would require a DVI to ADC adapter, such as your existing Radeon 9800 and one PCI card with a DVI connector, which would also require a DVI to ADC adapter, such as the Radeon 9200. An AGP card with an ADC connector would also work but seems pointless given you've already got the 9800 and adapter.
Unfortunately I'm not sure there is a really cheap solution. As already mentioned, there are VGA to DVI converter boxes on the market, but they're incredibly expensive and you'd be converting from digital to analogue and back to digital, with some loss of quality.

  • Matrox DualHead2Go and ADC Display?

I have an older 17" acrylic display with that big ADC-DVI adapter. I'm currently using my Macbook Pro (ATI X1600 video card, Dual-Link DVI connector) with a surprisingly good HP VGA panel, the same resolution as the Cinema Display.
Has anyone had any luck with using an ADC monitor with the Matrox DualHead2Go? I'd like to connect both of these displays to my MBP, and have heard concerns about compatibility with certain devices and the ADC adapter. Secondly, does anyone know if the DualHead2Go can support mismatched signals, at the same resolution(1x DVI, 1x VGA).
I suspect I need the Digital Version, but it seems that because the signal has to turn into VGA first, it may not work with the ADC display. So third, is the Macbook Pro capable of connecting to the newer DisplayPort version of the DualHead2Go? Assuming someone makes a DVI-Displayport connector.

The idea behind the DualHead2Go is that the two displays be matching displays, so mismatched resolution won't work AFAIK. But you can ask Matrox that question to be sure.
If your MBP has DVI for its output, then it won't be compatible with the DisplayPort version of the the DualHead2Go.

  • ADC displays, 10.4.11 and MDD

I've been running a dual 1.25 PowerMac G4 with a 23" Cinema display (ADC) for about 8 years now without a single hint of trouble. No room for the 23" ADC monitor on my desk anymore (making room for 30" w/MacPro), so I picked up a 17" ADC Studio display and wall-mounted it (actually, I have two of these).
Trouble is, my MDD G4 refuses to turn on with either 17" ADC Studio display connected. (LED only blinks once, machine never goes on.) The 23" Cinema works perfectly (as always) and a 15" ADC Studio display works, too. Both 17" ADC Studio displays work fine connected to an old G4 Cube, but both prevent my MDD from starting up. I always thought any Apple ADC display would work on the G4 MDD - no? What makes the 17" Studio displays different? Video card is the OEM ATI Radeon 9000 Pro (1 ADC, 1 DVI).
What am I missing? All four displays work, only the combination of MDD and 17" Studio display fails....?

Tried to startup from a great old SCSI drive running OS9, Monitors CDEV set to proper resolution, etc.
Computer's power button LED only lights when pressed, nothing else happens.
It's a hardware issue, simultaneous with two identical 17" ADC Studio Displays? I have an ADC to DVI converter, but what's the point of trying that? So..... why do they both work perfectly when plugged into a (10.3) G4 Cube?! What's the diff between G4 MDD (Radeon 9000 Pro) and G4 Cube's AGP cards (32MB VRAM 1280x1024 ATI RV200? - upgrade from OEM card)....?

  • 17" Studio ADC display to Thunderbolt

I have an old PowerMac G4 that I use with the ADC display. Well I will soon be aquiring a new 13" MacBook air. I want to know if I can use  a series of adapters to hook up my old ADC display to my new MacBook w/ Thunderbolt. What do I need?

If it is a LCD display, not CRT, you can use a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter

  • DVI display port/ADC display port bottleneck!

My G5 dual came with ONE DVI display port and ONE ADC display port. I wish to add another monitor for editing purposes. My current monitor is an NEC multi-sync, which uses up the DVI port...leaving the ADC port empty and useless.
    1. Am I forced to purchase an Apple Cinema Display?
    2. Would it be more frugal to purchase another video card?
    3. Can I make this work even though I have bought every 'adaptor' under the sun and the ADC port is still useless?
    4. It there a 3d party adaptor that can use the ADC port to use an NTSC (television) device as 2nd monitor?

  • IMac & ADC display

I have an older Apple LCD display with the ADC connector, which I can use with my (even older) PowerMac. It's a great monitor, and I'd hate to have it just sit around when I upgrade...hopefully to an iMac.
I know there are connectors for mini-DVI to VGA or DVI, but would it be possible to go from mini-DVI to ADC? Or would a mini-DVI to DVI and then a DVI to ADC adapter have to be the way to go? Has anyone tried this before?

Yes, thanks. But has anyone actually daisy-chained several connectors together to make sure it works with an ADC display? I just don't want to spend the $100+ and find out that it doesn't work. In theory it seems like it should, but one can never fully tell with technology.

  • Connecting 2 15" ADC Displays to G5

I already have a 15" ADC display & have another one on the way. I require the use of a seperate display for using music software etc. Can anyone tell me how I can connect the extra display to my G5? Do I need an extra connection?

I have the same problem with a 9800 AGP and 9200 PCI card.
    Things start to go wonky.
