Behavior that blows my mind -- duplicating restored information

I have an external drive with all my iTunes information. I lost some changes to playlists mid-day today, and got my library to the point where I thought it would just be easier to restore my latest backup from a few hours previous, since I hadn't made any purchases since the last backup.
I disabled TimeMachine backups, so the latest backup was the one I restored from.
First problem: I go to restore the iTunes folder, and only get the choice to delete the old information and restore with new information or to make no changes. What ever happened to just doing an intelligent restore that just fixes what's different?
Second -- and wilder -- problem. So, I decided to erase the external drive (but not repartition or rename it), and restore everything onto the erased partition. When I re-enabled TimeMachine, the first backup BACKED UP ALL 207 GB OF THE RESTORED MATERIAL ALL OVER AGAIN! If TimeMachine just restored it, shouldn't it know it is the same as the material it just restored?
What kind of programming leads to this?
So, over 20% of my backup disk is used for an exact duplicate of material that is already there. The iTunes library is copied twice. (I can tell because the disk space available on my TimeMachine backup drive shrunk by all 207 GB.)

I had just asked Time Machine to restore a folder from its most recent backup. It already had all that information. The last time Time Machine looked, the information was there -- that's why it's in the most recent backup. Then I asked it to restore. So everything is JUST as it was in the last backup. It knows that.
No, it doesn't, at least not without comparing everything on both drives every time it does a backup.
One of the big advantages of Time Machine over traditional "archive"-type backups is the speed of incremental backups, because of the way TM works.
If you've ever used such an app, when they do incremental backups, they examine every file and folder on your system to see what's changed and needs to be backed-up. This is, obviously, a very lengthy procedure.
But TM uses an internal database that OSX keeps on each drive, called the File System Event Store, of each directory (folder) that was changed. So TM can just look in that particular directory. When you consider that even a small Mac running OSX has upwards of half a million files and folders, that's clearly a huge advantage.
For example, on my small (~30 gb) system, when very little has changed, CarbonCopyCloner's incremental backup takes 15 - 20 minutes and most of my CPU. My Time Machine backups rarely take over *30 seconds* and I usually notice them only if I happen to see the icon spinning.
The occasional downside of that is, if you replace everything on a disk, it's all changed, even if you put all the same info back.
With a traditional system, it just isn't practical to do incremental backups more than once or twice a day (and they have other large disadvantages, too).
So, take your choice.

I have connected my ipad to my computer and logged into iTunes website. On my iPad to restore my my data Ipad I have chosen language, country then it asks you to connect with cable and log into iTunes, I have done that, but cannot find this other information I need to restore from the website. Can you help me please? the 2 replies, I thank you, but this has not helped with my problem.

Your post is somewhat confusing. To restore your iPad you use the iTunes application on your computer and connect your iPad. Select your iPad in the left column of iTunes on your computer and select General in the right column. You should find the restore choice there.

i was transferring my information from my old iphone to the new one, and i forgot that i had some pictures in the new one. i did the restoring information and the pictures in new one are gone. how can i get them back???? please

Only way to get it back is to restore your phone from a backup, if those pics were included in that backup.
But most likely those pics are gone.
What you should've done was import http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 the pics to your computer and after you restored from your old backup, you could sync those new pics to your phone via itunes.

  • TS1503 How do I clear the 'other data' on my iPhone 4S? It is using 25% of the available memory.  I do not want to have to wipe it and then reset every thing I use.  That's why I have restore.  Except restore puts the other data back on the phone.

I've come to the conclusion that Apple is no better than Microsoft.  There was a functional iTunes. I could sync music, playlists, etc; across my iPad and iPhone.  I can't now.  It now eats up storage on my devices with 'other data',  and Apple is silent on what is going on.   I currently have 2 iMacs, 2 iPads, a Macbook Pro, and an AirBook Pro.  I will stop purchasing Apple products.  It is a royal pain to fix anything.  This support page tries my patience to use.  I used to enjoy working with Apple products, simply because they functioned and where intuitive to use.  No more.  Music is impossible to sync across platforms using the same account.  Songs only, no playlists.  This is step back to the early year of systems.  No common data formats, zero portablity, and labor intensive.
Way to go Apple,  you've destroyed your reputation!

Similar issue -- this is the third time in as many months that I've had to restore my iPad. It's a iPad Mini w/ 32GB (ME277LL/A), running the latest iOS8.1.2. The "other" data starts off about 1GB and will bob around that. I was careful about games this time, seeing only a slight rise in the data. Once it started to rise, I deleted all of the game and the data on Game Center. No joy -- the data stays about the same.
Then I noticed it was really climbing -- shooting up to about 10GB and sitting there, no matter what I did: sync it: nothing. Deleting music (on the off chance it was album art or some such: nothing. Deleted all the books in iBooks: no effect -- still 10GB. Cleared the iCloud storage, cleared caches repeatedly: nothing. Reset everything: no effect. Only Restoring the iPad -- which takes forever and is a gigantic pain in the @$$ -- gets it down. This is exactly the same thing that happened the other two times -- I lose about 10GB to "other."
I now suspect, thinking on what I was doing with the device, that pulling movies from iTunes seems to be the culprit. Deleting the movies might take the movie "off the iPad", but there seems to be a corresponding jump in Other. My guess is there's some glitch dumping the information elsewhere.
It makes a 32GB iPad pretty frickin' close to useless in a remarkable amount of time. I've not had this issue until this iPad (bought last summer) with the iOS8 upgrade. I don't see this happen on the iPhone 5S with the same OS...that's why I dialed down to iTunes (when is it not smack in the middle of issues?) and Video as the culprit; I don't watch movies on the phone.
I've noticed a massive amount of posts in support and around the web on this matter...it might be time for Apple to shift it and do something about the matter. If I'm going to be restricted to surfing the web, email, and little else thanks to the Other issue, it really doesn't make sense to stick with this device. I can doo all that on my laptop, can't it?

  • How to restore information on iphone

Okay, so I lost my iPhone but then luckily someone found it and returned it to me. However, I set a passcode on my iPhone before I lost it, so when the person found it, he tried multiple times to get into my phone, and he ended up completely disabling it. When I got it back, the screen said "Phone disabled, connect to iTunes". I did that but it didn't unlock my phone (since I recently got a new laptop and have never synced my iPhone to it). As a result, I just put the phone in recovery mode, and restored it back to the original factory mode.
    HERES THE PROBLEM:
In doing so, I lost all of the information on my iPhone, from contacts all the way down to pictures.
Is there anything I can do to restore my iPhone back to when It had all the information? You know how you can restore your computer to an earlier date? Is there anything I can do like that to my iPhone, like restore it to before I completely erased all of the info, or to before the person disabled my phone?
Basically, can my phone go back to the way it was?

Did you ever backup your data in iTunes? (backups are performed with each sync - go to Edit > Preferences > Devices in iTunes to see a list of your backups of devices synced on your computer which which you can restore your iPhone with) Are your contacts synced with an address book manager like Outlook? Is your iTunes library intact or backed up elsewhere such as a CD, DVD, or external drive?
If you answered no to all of these questions, then the answer is no, there is no way.

  • How do I restore information from a time capsule Back up to a new computer???

Last week my Imac was stolen. Fortunately the thieves did not take the Airport Time Capsule on which I have my back-ups.
Yesterday I bought a new Imac and today I tried to recover my back-ups.
A very disappointing experience I must say!
During installation I somewhere chose the option to restore information from a previous backup. I entered all the requested ID's and passwords and the system started to reset the backups. It indicated that the "transfer file process" would require 2 hrs 45 minutes. Very promising!
However, after less than 10 minutes it stopped. When I checked the information on the Imac it appeared to be inclomplete. Part of my photo's had been recovered, but my E-mail settings including address books and old E-mails had not been recovered.
I then used the Migration assistant to start the transfer process again. Unfortunately with the same sad result.
When I tried to repeat the process again, the system did not find the Imac back-up on the time machine anymore.
Is there anybody who can help me out???

Your backups may be corrupted.  Try repairing them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  Be sure to connect to the TC via Ethernet.
Then start over, per the green box in How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups?

  • Duplicating Row Information Macro

    Hello,
I am having some trouble making this button or macro for this pdf file.
I currently have a row of input cells that it would like to duplicate with the click of a button.
The reason that I do not duplicate these rows to begin with is to minimize the space of the file and allow users to create their own request form with the number of parts they are requesting.
I am currently running Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES 8.2.1
    Thanks

I was able to figure it out, your instructions were very clear and it helped to have the example you sent to have something tangible as a learning guide.
Thank you so much for your help.

  • Restoring Information from Timecapsule

I'm restoring information back onto my Macbook. It's stuck with "less than a minute remaining" and has been this way for about an hour. It's all wireless. I'm told I should restart my computer, is that true? If not, what should I do?

    Hello,
I was on the phone with Apple today. After resetting the TC and erasing the HD and reinstalling the OS again, the Apple folks had me do the migraton assistant again.  This time I was taliking with a TC support person. When it came time in the process to recognize and select the MacBook Pro data on the TC, he had me wait about 30 seconds. And sure enough after that time both the TC data for my iMac AND for my MacBook Pro were displayed and I could select the correct one.  My previous mistake was going with the first selection and not giving TC enough time to display both back ups.
So after the 30 second wait and selecting the correct Back Up, everything went perfectly.
Thanks for listening and I hope this helps someone out there!

Before you reinitialize your log shipping configuration, check to see if you can take a differential backup and restore that on top of your standby database. This is relatively easier than to take a full database backup just to reinitialize

I can take a diff backup.. But in my secondary, when i right click standby >tasks-->restore-->i can see only option to restore transaction log file. Other options are greyed out. How can i restore a diff backup now. If i bring the DB online with

Somebody provide me insight on below error
This secondary database is not functional because

Yes - I connected my phone to my computer / Itunes and went into the apps section, but from there I have no idea how to manage the push notifications.  I even tryied going into itunes that is installed on my phone.  I still cannot find anyplace to manage these popups.  I have also gone into settings - notifiations - and tried turning all notifications for these apps all off but that didnt work either.  Any guidance is MUCH appreciated - Im not sure where to go from here.

Once I do that, it says it will restore but every time, restoring it fails. My iPod is not working at all, and I really have no idea what to do. I would like to know which app/software in MAC gives us the same feature that is provided by System Restore in Windows, and how does that work.

Time Machine is one such program, although it is a recursive backup program which offers limited archive capability, based on the capacity of the backup destination, and it requires you set it up before you start editing your files.   Some programs are also Versions aware, which offers a kind of restore capability by file.  Again needs to be setup before you start editing.
    Just a for-your-info:
Mac is not an acronym, it is a nickname for Macintosh.

iOS 5 seems to work on my ipad, but apparently something went wrong when restoring. I lost music and movies, and when I connect the ipad to my macbook, I get the message that itunes was interrupted when restoring. I have had the same issue since day 1 of the ios5 installation.  I always hit "Cancel" and then the iPad eventually shows up again in iTunes.  Then a few hours later, I get the same message again.  Annoying, but I've not found a way around it.
