Behaviors and Motion Tracking help

I just started using Motion today and am having some problems. I am trying to add an angel like halo effect over a head and am having trouble. I imported the clip I want to add the halo to into Motion via the Final Cut timeline. After it opens the clip in Motion I try to use "add behaviors" but it wont work when I click it.. I have the clip selected. I imported the clip into Motion but it's not letting me use behaviors for tracking.. It's also not letting me bring up certain windows like the Inspector. It will only show me the layers/media/audio and timeline windows. Please help. Thanks in advance.

I have no idea why it posted my question three times... I only clicked once.

  • Motion 3  - motion tracking help

I am rather new to Apple Motion, so I apologize in advance for any novice comments or inquiries. That being said, I have extensive experience with video shooting/editing/graphics withing the Adobe family products. In this instance however, I am required to use Apple Motion.
My question is simple (I hope). I have a short video that has been motion tracked - selected a definable area on the motion and created keys frames to track the motion. I have then overlayed a graphic of a "dot" to highlight the motion of the initial video. The dot is subsequently matching the motion perfectly and is in sync with the underlying video. My question is this:
How do I add a "tail" effect to the dot - similar to a lens blur - so that the motion of the dot is highlighted a bit more. The concept is the same as having a "tail" on your computer mouse. I thought this would be easy.
More preferably - i would like to attach a paint stroke, as a light trail to the initial motion tracking (instead of the dot + tail). Apple's light trails are much more aesthetically pleasing and look better than the animated dot mentioned above.
In any case, I'm sure the above task is easily accomplished for an experienced Motion user, but alas I am struggling. Thanks in advance for your answers!!!

There is a trail effect in the filters, but I'm not a fan of it. Do do a light streak type of effect, I'd probably utilize the particle emitter.
Create an emitter from your dot (E), and set the speed of your emitter to 0. Match move the emitter to your tracked footage. Use the color over life parameters and birth rate to tweak the emitter and create your "light streak".
Specialcase has a wonderful tutorial that covers exactly what you're trying to do. Here it is:

    Hope this helps.

  • Motion tracking help

Hi all, hope everyone had a great Xmas.
I am having an issue with motion tracking and I will try my best to explain my problem as clearly as I can
Here is what I am trying to achieve.
Please visit this youtube video  Canon Powershot SX30 IS -140X Moon Zoom Test - YouTube
and this is a still shot I just quickly edited in fireworks to show you the effect I am trying to achieve
    http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/3148/motion.png
As you can see in the video, some parts of the moon go out of screen in some shots and the camera also zooms in and out of the moon, so I need the word "Business" and "logo" to increase and decrease in size in proportion with the moons size ( camera zooming in and out ) whilst remaining at the exact point on the moon ( as if the word "business" was built on the surface of the moon )
Which tutorial might help me? or if someone would be kind enough to explain how to do this, it would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks in advance

Don't even bother to work with that video.  Reshoot it.  Next time, use a tripod and make sure the shot is consistently exposed, which at the moment, it is not.  You apparently haven't even considered the problems trying to match your AE work with the camera auto iris.
And since he put it so well, I'd also like to quote Bogesian from a different thread, responding to someone who also knew little of AE, and wanted to learn what he or she thought would be a simple trick:
"After Effects is a kitchen. It's not a cookbook. And there is much more to using this metaphor than putting a frozen entrée  into the microwave.
You have everything you need, it's just not given to you as a recipe for that specific effect.
The AE help system and the many tutorials that came with After Effects will show you how to animate text.
You will need to learn how to use motion tracking in the same way.
You may need to learn how to use the planar tracking system, Mocha, which is not for the faint of heart.
Like learning to make soufflé, you need the basic tools, fresh ideas, high quality ingredients and sufficient fundamental experience with all of the toolsm, techniques and ingredients. You will fail many times. Once you've discovered certain truths and universal, reliably repeatable steps, anything is possible within the kitchen.
Suggest you invest in ayof the many AE books by Trish and Chris Meyer or visit their website for several hours before you attempt to use the more advanced resources you can easily find online."

  • Shake vs. Motion for Keying and Motion Tracking? Also, best way to learn?

    Hello,
I have been working in the Final Cut Studio Suite for a little while and have gotten pretty good at getting visual effects out of Motion.
However, Shake has always looked very interesting to me and from what I understand, is much more powerful than Motion.
Two effects I am most often involved with are:
    1. keying out greenscreen
    2. analyzing motion to match-move elements of a composite
Can anyone vouch for how much better Shake is at doing these processes over Motion and After Effects?
If I do decide to get Shake, I know I'll have to spend a while getting used to just moving around in it - node-based workflow is TOTALLY new to me.
Are there any good learning resources that Shake gurus here can recommend? I've always learned better from CDs and DVDs than books, but I would consider picking up a book to learn from if it were REALLY good.

Shake is far more powerful and flexible than Motion in both of these tasks. It offers considerably more control over the end result, albeit at the expense of a learning curve.
I mainly learned from books so I would recommend the tutorial book that comes inside the box as well as this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Pro-Training-Shake-4/dp/0321256093
I've also got a couple of Gnomon DVDs as well, which I found helpful:

  • DVD Capacity and Motion Menus HELP!!!

I am a newbie . . . . After 2 weeks or more of working on my iMovie and now iDVD, I am just about ready to burn my first dvd . . . my second attempt. My first attempt, after approximately 12 hours, left me with an error while burning . . . one or more of my buttons were out of the TV safe area. That was an easy fix. Since then, I've added a few things . . .primarily, 5 background photos with music (using the Passthrough theme). Before burning, I checked the project info and see that my "Motion Menus" is 126:11 of 15:00. I'm not sure what this means or how to fix it. I assume it's the added photos and music that I added, but find it hard to believe since it's just photos. Also the DVD Capacity is now at 8.7 GB of 4.2 GB. How did this happen and how do I fix that too? Thank You!!!

I figured it out. For those that want to know how to fix this issue with Motion Menus/DVD Capacity (overload). :)) Reduce the amount of time for each menu that contains motion using the slider. Slide to the right to reduce the amount of time, thus reducing your "Motion Menus" overload! which then reduces the DVD Capacity. Phew!! :))

  • Using motion tracking and time remapping to smooth pans?

    Hi!
I shot some video with a cheap tripod and I'm not happy with some of the panning shots that I made. It came to my mind that it might be possible to smooth out the un-even speeds of those pans by tracking the footage and then using time remapping to make the movement smooth and constant. However, I don't know how to do the math in the right way. Has anyone tried this before? Is there maybe even tutorials on the subject?
Any help will be appreciated! Thanks!

I saw someone else thinking about the same solution on another forum so I decided to bump this a little bit.
The way I see it, this should be doable (unless there is something that I really dont understand).
The way it would work is this:
You have a panning shot of a stationary scene (no moving objects). You choose a track point that is visible during the pan and motion track that point. Then you look at the speed of that track point (how fast it is moving ie. from left to right) as pixels per seconds. And then you tie it to the time remapping property to make the speed (pixels per seconds) move in a constant manner.
The way I see it, there should be no black gaps when using a method like this, which kind of is why I'm interested in the consept. Because you are not moving the frame around spatially, you are simply changing the time it takes for a point to get from A to B.
    What do you guys think?

  • Locking Vignette to Motion Track in FCP, Can it be done?

    Hello All,
I have been watching a tutorial about Apple's Color and there was one section that
used a motion track and connected a vignette to that track. I thought it was neat and
convenient, so the question is, can that be done in Final Cut or the second choice would
    be Motion?
The process was elegant in Color but that puts the effect late in post, at out put stage. I know
something similar can be accomplished with key frames. The idea that a motion track can
    control an effect is intriguing.
    Thank you, Tom

FCP does not have motion tracking. You can send the clip to Motion and Motion track the effect there.

  • Help with Motion Tracking and Masking?

Hi. First and probably only post here. I've got a bit of an issue....
I'm trying to create "snapshots" in my video that are created from masks which are then motion tracked and remain stationary. Here's a video of what i'm talking about... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OhVAduuJc8
The problem I'm running into is that after i motion track the layer, select a null object as the target, duplicate the video layer, mask the object, freeze frame, and pair it to a null layer, the object does not remain stationary as the ones in the video do. Instead it moves WITH the null object and I cant figure out why. I've gotten a tutorial from the guy who made the video, however it's private so i don't know if you guys will be able to see it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zY0QLrMCcGM
Either way, i followed the tutorial exactly and still to no avail. Are my settings messed up or what exactly is going on? Ive successfully done this project before but now that i'm using CS5, i'm running into these issues. If anyone has any advice i'd gladly try it out and return with the results.
Thanks so much for trying to help me out.

Yeah the null is still moving. Will freezing it lock the mask into place while still allowing the footage to play through? And how would i go about "freezing the null"?
I just dont understand how this person does it in the tutorial, and the mask remains in place. I know you probably can't watch the tutorial cause the user has it set as private, but as far i know his mask stays in place, but uses the null (while still moving) as a tracking device to keep the mask from floating out of control as the camera moves through the shot.
Sorry if I'm making this rather confusing. It's difficult to explain.
Maybe it might be easier to explain how you would obtain the result from the video I've posted? Keep in mind I dont have CameraTracker.

  • 3D Motion Tracking Error/Crash in progress [Urgent Help Please!]

    Hey there!
I'm an video editor and I use 3D Motion Tracking a lot but recently every time I use it, it comes up with an error and says crash in progress,
It never used to do it and I can't seem to find any solutions to fix it.
    Computer Specs:
    Manufacturer: Toshiba
    Model: Notebook
Processor: AMD E1-2100 APU with Radeon(TM) HD Graphics 1.00 GHz
Installed Memory: 4.00 GB (3.45 GB Usable)
System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
So here's how I get to the problem. (I'll try provide as much detail as possible)
I import a mp4/avi file into After Effects,
    Create a new composition with:
    1280 x 720 (16:9)
    Frame Rate = 30
    Duration = 30 seconds
    Resolution = Third
    Advanced
    Renderer = Classic 3D
    (Boxes Underneath all unchecked)
    Options:
Shadow Map Resolution = Comp Size
    Motion Blur:
    Shutter Angle = 180 Degrees
    Shutter Phrase = -90 Degrees
    Samples Per Frame = 16
    Adaptive Sample Limit = 128
       3.  Drag the mp4/avi into the composition to use it. (1.21 Seconds Long)
       4.  Right click on it and go to Effect > Perspective > 3D Camera Tracker
       5.  The 3D Camera Tracker initializes with these settings:
Shot type = Fixed Angle of View
Show Track Points = 3D Solved
    Track Point Size = 100.0%
    Target Size = 100.0%
       6.   Loads Frames 0% > 100% then as soon as the orange line shows up with Solving camera it shows this,
and when I click okay it shows this,
       and then finally this,
and then it crashes. that's the same process every time and it still comes up with this.
       Help would be appreciated !
       Thank you !

Try rendering an image sequence from your original footage then load that into AE and Camera Track the image sequence. Use the AME to or AE to render a JPEG or PNG image sequence:
It's important to know that some footage cannot be Camera Tracked. In order for camera tracking to work there must be a significant amount of fixed geometry in the scene. For example, if you have a shot of open water like this it cannot be Camera Tracked:
This shot also cannot be camera tracked successfully because most of the frame is moving:
If transcoding or converting the shot to an image sequence does not fix the problem and you don't get a frame rate mis match warning then you could have possibly not given enough memory to other applications in you memory and multi processor settings. Keep memory allocation for other apps in even numbers and make sure that you have not starved the dynamic link server that does camera tracking. If you have the memory 4GB to other apps is absolutely the minimum. If you only have 4GB then give 2 to AE and 2 to other apps.

  • Motion tracking and chroma key

I shot a webmercial and during the product demonstration (on an iphone) the screen of the application is very close to the color of the green screen. I am having a hard time keying due to the similarity in colors. I duplicated the clip and created a bezier mask around the LCD screen of the iPhone, and tried to apply the motion tracking behavior in Motion, but it's not working well. Any ideas anyone, or a better way to do this?
    Thanks!

Umm, okay, it's a closeup of the iPhone, Apple will like that.
You may be approaching this all wrong or I'm still not understanding but try to think of the hand and the phone as a single object. All you need to do is not apply the greenscreen keyer to the hand-arm-phone object. You can protect that object by using a hand-drawn matte (also known as a garbage matte) but you can create a protection matte many different ways including pulling a hard luma key.
Here is one approach (if Patrick was tuned in, he'd have another, much more elegant, suggestion for you):
You have a your video as a layer, yes, you apply the green keyer to it and part of the phone screen drops out, too. That's okay, you're going to fill the phone back in with itself.
You place another copy of your video on top (or even underneath) and you draw a mask around the screen of the phone. Doesn't need to be precise. Maybe you need to keyframe the mask position a few time, maybe you can attach the mask to a tracker. But all you're doing with the mask is allowing the keyed video to show everywhere exept in the mask or, if you apply your mask to the keyed video below, you're just allowing the clseup shot to be seen through the hoel from below.
Umm, clear as mud, I know. The point I'm trying to make is the task is probably not as complex as you're thinking it is.
If you were using AE, you'd use a four corner  motion tracking setup with trackers in each corner of the screen.
PS: Thank you for the kind words, mostly I ust pi$$ folks off around here.

  • Motion 3 - Motion Tracking and Match Move

Hi, I have no problem learning how to use motion tracking or match move because there's plenty of tutorials online. My question is, if let's say i motion tracked a clip to my original clip and half way through the movie an obstacle comes into the position where my motion tracked clip is. How do i make is so the obstacle appears in front of the motion tracked clip?
For example, take apple's motion 3 sample video.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwezKN_hFF4
The place where they put the GPS clip, if while the girl is driving she moves her hand in front of the GPS. How would we make it so that her hand appears in front of the GPS not behind it?
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thank you

If I am understanding you correctly, it sounds like you are asking how to have an object that is part of the background layer appear in front of an object that you are going to composite in an match-move.
The only way to do that is to duplicate the background layer and move it in front of the layer you are bringing in, then create a mask around the portion of layer you want to keep (in the example you provide - the girl's hand).
You would have to go frame-by-frame and animate the mask to follow her hand - very time consuming but I don't see any other way.

  • 4-corner Motion tracking. Mixing manual and auto generated keyframes

In Motion I start setting tracking points manually. Then after some frames, I like the Computer to finish the work and press the button that tracks 4-point automatically. As a result, the manually points are not moving the object any more. It stays fixed until the playhead reaches the automatically tracked points in the timeline. They work as expected. When I press "undo" to remove the automatic points, my manually points again move the object.
I dont find an explanation nor an solution to this. Any ideas?
    THX
    Manfred

The problem you had adjusting the position is because Match Move is a behavior. Luckily, I was doing this just yesterday so I have two possible solutions.
The simplest answer is to convert the Match Move behavior to keyframes. Simply select the layer and hit CMD+K. Motion will assign keyframes to the position and the behavior will be deleted. From there, you can place the playhead on frame 164, and manually keyframe until frame 172 and you're done.
If you don't want to lose the behavior for some reason, there is another solution. You can duplicate the match move behavior and shorten the OUT of one to frame 162, and the IN of the other to 172. Then for the space in between you can use keyframes.
Personally, I think the former is far easier, but they should both work fine.

  • Need Help With Motion Track/Camera Tracking

I've been trying for several days to motion track 2 seconds worth of footage but I cannot get it. I've tried the AE motion track, 3D Camera Tracker, Mocha Pro, Camera Tracker from the Foundry, Boujou (could be user error with that though, cause I had never used it before), but I cannot get this shot figured out. Test - YouTube here is a link to the footage, I'm trying to track from frame 183-235 (where the guy is kneeling down in front of the box holding dynamite and everything is black and red)
Any help would be great, all I want to do is have an image attached to one of the boards in the background so it doesn't move.
    Thanks!

Wow you have boujou? Thats awesome $10k, anyway looks like mocha should be fine for this as I don't see a ton of camera movement in that shot where you want to track. Do you know how to use mocha? If not there are tuts while working on that scene.
