Beige G3 Server won't boot 9.2.1 from CD or HD

Tried to upgrade a Beige G3 Server w/Rev3 ROM from 8.6 to Retail 9.2.1.
Would not boot from CD. Gets to appletalk extention icon then gets bomb dialog box with no text. Mouse still moves pointer.
Installed via alternate method to HD (ultra-wide scsi) from CD with 8.6 booted,
I now have the same senario when trying to boot from the scsi HD.
Boot with space bar down has the same results.
Booting with extentions off gets the bomb dialog box with
"illegal instuction, restart with extentions off" ( catch 22!!).
Installed a second drive (ide) from another computer with 8.6, this boots fine.
Have used this same CD to install 9.2.1 on a beige G3 MT/Rev3 ROM with no problems.
Will boot 9.1 from Norton Utilities CD no problem.
Configuration is: 128meg, 4G ultra- wide scsi w/9.2.1 on scsi-3 card in pci slot 2, 4G ide drive w/8.6, ide cd-rom drive, floppy drive, Internal scsi-1 cable removed (no device on this cable) performed manual reset, no change.
Any help greatly appreciated!

I finally found the problem, after going thru the forum on G3 Usage there was a post to check the personality board for proper fit in its socket ( a common problem apperently), and how this can cause odd operating problems. On close inspection I noticed that the back of the case had a slight bow outwards. Since the board is secured to the back of the case, it was lifting the board slighty out of its socket.
I straightened the case to match up the mounting holes with the board while the board is properly mounted in its socket. Problem solved...
Why this only affected 9.2.1 is beyond me. It would still boot 8.6 and 9.0.4 with no problems!

  • 10.4.11 Server won't boot past hfs mount

Any ideas how to repair an OS X Server 10.4.11 system that won't boot past the gray Apple logo/spinning bars? Verbose mode stalls after the line "hfs mount: enabling extended security on <startup volume name>"
The machine will boot from the OS X Server install DVD (10.4.7 Universal). Disk Utility permissions and repair indicate no problems with the startup volume.
If I am unable to resolve the problem with the existing system, what is the best method for re-installing the server OS without having to manually re-construct the network configuration, accounts and permissions? I have a configuration settings file and a relatively recent Open Directory Archive disk image.

I have been unable to find any way to get past the boot stall, so I re-installed OS X Server 10.4 and restored from my Open Directory archive. Had to recreate shares.
Any tips on what plists or other System components should be cleaned out to try recovering from boot problems like this were there is nothing wrong with the disk and you can't boot into single user mode?

  • Mac Mini, OSX Leopard Server: Won't Boot

I have a Mac Mini Server that 's been stable and connected to my home network wirelessly.
But the signal strength has been so-so.
So I added an Airport Express Modem in my system and installed the adminstrative CD that came with it.
The Mini saw everything and set up the Airport Express fine and it worked great...for about 3 minutes.
I was checking  the speed when it became non-responsive. I shut it down and tried rebooting, and the loading ball spun and spun and spun and did nothing.
I tried rebootijng from a regular OSX Disk and it was non-responsive.
I got it into diagfnostic mode, got a diagnostic screen showing me everything was working, but it still only shows a spinning ball forever and won;t boot.
Using an external DVD, tried using the administrative disk, but I also couldn;t get into it.
No matter what I've tried, the "loading ball" spins and spins and spins...and won't actually load anything.
Ideas, suggestions? I HATE to hit the genius's this time of year..IT'll take FOREVER!!!

Smells of a low-level hardware failure.
I'd usually suggest ordering a spare Mac Mini Server, and rolling in your backup, but Leopard is a very long time ago and jumping to Lion is going to be involved.  Which leaves you to scrounge something old enough to run Leopard or Snow Leopard, and moving to that.
Or you get to brave the local Apple store, yes.
If you don't have good backups of your disk, stop working with the server Right Now, as - if this is a disk-level error - further activity on a failing device tends to reduce the likelihood of eventually recovering the data.

  • Server won't boot from RAID mirrored pair

Some months ago we updated an OS X 10.4.7 server with a software raid pair of disks to 10.4.8 and were rewarded with a machine that sticks at the black-on-grey Apple logo with no cog wheel displayed. At that time I just bought a couple of new and larger disks, reinstalled OS X Server, updated with combo updates rebooted a couple of times to be sure and all has been well until tonight when our system manager tried to install Retrospect which required a reboot and, suddenly it's hanging at the Apple Logo again. Such cruel irony...
Booting from the install CD I can mount the raid, and apart from a handful of permissions needing fixing, Disk Utility says the pair is fine. Although Startup Disk lets it be selected as the startup volume, the problem persists and still won't boot.
Does anybody have any thoughts as to how to cure this problem reasonably quicky in way that preserves as much as possible of the existing installation. My only idea is to try bless(8) to fix the boot behaviour of the volume. However, its man page doesn't discuss blessing raid mirrors. Is there anything special required?
I'd also like to know what caused the problem in the first place, and how to prevent it in future.
    Thanks
    Charles

You say it has been working so I can't really tell you why it acts up now.
But the raid was setup using 10.4 Disk Util (RAID ver. 2 sw.)?
Tried diskutil checkraid disk3 in Terminal (from DVD)?
    Tried running DiskWarrior?
A customer who bought a pair of new larger third party drives for his Xserve G5 and put them in his old 250GB drive bay carrriers couldn't get it working with sw RAID (I didn't look at it myself).

  • How to access old G5 Beige Tower that won't boot?

I own a couple of computers, a G5 Beige Tower and some early iMac I believe (come to think of it, now I can't picture what it looks like).
The G5 won't boot up—I haven't given it a try in years, but I refused to throw it away. I think it shows a flashing question mark inside of a macintosh icon.
I lugged that thing into an Apple store long ago and they managed to retrieve SOME files (they sure didn't try very hard, imo), so that tells me that I may still be able to access the hard drive, is this correct? Do I only need a boot drive somehow? I'm not sure if I even have one, floppy or CD.
The second computer was fried in an EMP. Lightning must've struck somewhere nearby (there was a huge storm at the time) and the craziest pulse of energy went through my body, I'll never forget it. It was like exploding in slow-motion, every particle in my body pushing outward, and when it was over, I was fine (shaken), but my computer was dead along with other electronic gizmos. Any opinions on if I should give up on this?
Would an Apple genius even know what to do if I took that computer in?
Both are old but may have some files from college that I'd love to recover.

    Hi,
You mentioned a "G5 Beige Tower". The last beige Macintosh tower computer was a G3 model (http://support.apple.com/kb/sp406). Could it be this one instead?
If it is the G3 model in the technical specifications above, minimum Mac OS 8.0 would be needed for startup. This could be an appropriate/supported system CD. It could also be the Disk Tools PPC floppy that has been made available for download from Apple (you would then need a working older Mac with a built-in floppy drive and Disk Copy 6.3.3 in order to create a bootable floppy from the disk image):
    http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English -North_American/Macintosh/System/Mac_OS_8.1_Update/Disk_Tools_PPC.img.bin
    http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English -North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/Disk_Copy/Disk_Copy_6.3.3.smi.bin
A bad logic board battery can sometimes cause startup problems. You may also want to try a PRAM reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Another possibility would be to remove the internal hard drive (the same could be tried with the iMac). An IDE/ATA drive can be connected to an external USB adapter (such as the example below) and then read on a more modern Mac (or even a PC with the correct software).

  • Mac Mini server won't boot after logoff, any suggestions?

My mac Mini Server will not boot after administrator logoff, I get a gray screen with the spinning progress wheel, but nothing happens.  Any suggestions?

Can you boot into single user mode? If so, run fsck and post the results.

  • MBP stuck to the spinning wheel, won't boot after deleting something from "/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd.plist"

    Hi all,
I have a MBP 13" (early 2011) running Lion 10.7.2 and some days before, I wanted to host an HTTP server on it.  I googled and found I should turn on "Web Sharing" for this feature.  But unfortunately, it just wouldn't start.  I googled again and found a solution (I think).  I tried deleting the disable key and
    <string>-D</string>
             <string>WEBSHARING_ON</string>
from "/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd.plist". I couldn't save the file because it is protected.  So I tried copying all the content of the file and save it to a new file with the same name, deleted the original file, and put the new one back to the directory.  Nothing worked.  I couldn't edit the new file as well.  So I put the original file back and replaced the new one.  Then I tried to change my rights of that directory as well as the file to "Read and Write".  And I managed to edit the file!  I deleted the mentioned sentences and saved it.  Then I tried turning Web Sharing on for about a hundred times, but never succeeded.  So I turned off my MBP and slept.  OK, the next day when I decided to try again, I found the machine won't boot!  It got stuck to the grey screen with Apple logo and a spinning wheel permanently.  Every time I needed to hold the power button for 4 seconds to turn it off.  I've tried SUM (command-S) and ran fsck, no problems were found.  I also tried the method from http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20809 , but still couldn't get past that grey screen.  Cannot boot into safe Boot also.  I don't if it is a problem related to the alias of that file because I had deleted it and put it back.  Please help.  Many thanks.
P.S. If can't solve it, should I bring it to Apple Store and ask for Genius?

    Hi,
Yes, I did resolve it - it was the graphics card. Changed that, updated OS X and it was done.
I can't now remember exactly which card I used, and I'm away at the moment so I can't get to the infomation, but I do remember that it was a full length card with a large heatsink, and was a bit of a pig to squeeze into the chassis!
Had to buy an adaptor for the second monitor connection, but that didn't cause any hassle. I got the card and cable from the local Apple Store.
It also theoretically needed a later version of OS X than was already there, but since it allowed me to boot off the CD, that didn't matter (and it worked with the old one anyway, as it turned out).
Oh, and also of course, although it's a bog standard PC card, you have to pay way over the odds for it because it has to have different PROMS for a Mac. (Thank you Apple.)  Just part of the price we all have to pay for using Macs.
I seem to remember that there was a certain amount of dancing involved in upgrading the OS afterwards (might have had to do one step twice), but nothing that unusual.
    Hope this helps,
    All the best,
    Brian

  • New X2270 won't boot OpenSolaris 2009-06 from internal disk

Is anyone having any problems with recent X2270 servers? I took delivery of two of these last week. They are without the ILOM card because Sun are having quality issues with them - a firmware bug I believe. They are fun to install as my only eyes is via a serial port that seems to have some kind of bios video text to serial ascii emulation which has quite a delay on it.
Basically after installing Solaris it won't boot from the internal disk. So far I've tried net installs of SXCE b105 and also the latest OpenSolaris 2009-06 and in both cases the install completes correctly without any errors (that I've detected) but after rebooting they fail to load the kernel. Here is what's left on my serial console:
Press F2 to run Setup (CTRL+E on Remote Keyboard)
Press F12 if you want to boot from the network (CTRL+N on Remote Keyboard)At this point the hard drive activity light flashes twice and then the machine appears frozen. The Solaris banner is never shown. I've left it like this for hours just be sure.
I've chosen ZFS for the whole disk in both instances. I wonder if this has something to do with it.
Presumably OpenSolaris has the drivers for the disk interface cards otherwise it wouldn't have been able to install onto the disks.
    Any advice greatly appreciated.
    Kind Regards
    Jesse

The solution for my problem was reinstalling linux-firmware & linux. Maybe this can help you too.
I have booted from a live cd and doing these steps:
    RAID Array scan

  • Mac Mini server won't boot.

Our server is on, but when we try to access it via its screen it excepts password but returns to login page. Any ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Too bad mini server won't boot from an external drive

It won't. Enterprise TEch support confirmed this. I bought thew new mini server to get a good value fast machine with a quad i-7.
What's the purpose of Thuderbolt if my apps and doc folders have to reside on a SATA disk?
They really should have non server version with the i7 quad.
Even better Apple should make it clear that this is the case. Even the guy in the apple store said I coud boot it form an external drive!

Yes this will all take some time for sure.
If you want to keep lion server on your current machine, then yes, that is correct. It doesnt hurt to have a few spare 500gb+ hard drives to help the long process.
See there was previous controversy with the mac mini servers with the dual cores (the one I have) because we all wanted the better processors but to not run the server version and some also wanted to be able boot from other drives. Same as you..
In non lion versions of OSX you would normally put the SL Server DVD or SL DVD into your mac and instead of installing a fresh OS, you would select utilities , then restore from time machine backup. You could also obviously use an external drive or SD card with SL or SL server installer loaded on it to install the OS or perform the restore.
    That being said
I personally only know how to use a Snow leopard Server or Regular snow leopard installer DVD (or disc imaged external hard drive partition as just mentioned) to use time machine to restore an OS. I personally dont have experience with the lion disc repair for using its utilities to restore from a backup. Im sure it works the same way though when you hold option and boot from it..
If you are looking to go NON server on your OS you must have a Snow leopard retail version DVD (not leopard upgrade version)  to be installed on to an external drive.
So what you would do is Set up a partitioned external hard drive and load it up with Snow leopard, upgrade it in app store to lion ($29 ) , then update it with software update, back it up to another partition using time machine, then boot from the install dvd (or disc imaged partitioned installer of SL) , go to utilities, and select restore from backup, when its asks wher eto install choose the external you want to boot from (must be partitioned using GUID partition table) and install. When you want to boot from that drive, hold option right after you power up your machine until it gives you the option of the drive you want to boot from, select it and boot.
Unfortunately like I said you will have to have a snow leopard retail installer (no longer at the apple store only online or ebay for $30) and then would have to 'upgrade' to lion in order to NOT have lion server version on a mac mini set up for server.
If lion server version is good for you then yes do what you wrote in the reply would work. My experience with server snow leopard was that it was slower than snow leopard regular and it extremely interfered with my music production even though I was not running any of its server options..
    I hope this helps..

  • POST fails on T5140 server.   POST shows errors about "Unable to create files".  Server won't boot

    All,
Need any help that someone can provide.  Currently I have a T5140 server.   Yesterday it crashed unexpectedly. We were able to reboot the system and it come back up with the service light on.  Service light was indicating a memory DIMM problem.   We powered down the server to replace the memory modules that had service led showing for them.   After powering the system on, it never gets past POST now.  We attached a serial console to the ILOM and watch the post.   POST starts normally. Then we start to see messages about "unable to create files.  Finally POST gets to a point where it looks like it is finishing but hangs.   It hangs at the point where it say that it is initiating run level 3.  But it just sits there and never boots the system.  Any ideas?   Is this a motherboard issue that really cemented itself when the power was removed to the system?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  We are stuck.
    Thanks.

I have had this same issue, unfortunately you will need to place a service call for a field tech to come on-site and replace the failty DIMM. The T5140 WILL NOT BOOT if any one or more DIMMs fail to POST.
The only partial solution is to disable the CPU that is connected to the bad DIMM so the system will successfully boot up in degraded mode. But I would not run the box like that for long.
You need to call service a.s.a.p.

  • Mac Mini "server" won't boot Clonezilla CD

Has anyone gotten the Clonezilla Live 1.2.3-27 or alternative 20100121-karmic CDs to boot on this dual-drive box? Mine shows this...
    ISOLINUX 3.84 2009-12-18 ETCD
pauses for about a minute, then ends with
    ISOLINUX 3.84 2009-12-18 ETCDisolinux: Disk error 01, AX = 425B, drive 90
Boot failed: press a key to retry...
The CDs boot just fine on my Mac Pro. Thanks.

Greetings Richard, I ran into a similar situation recently with my mini server. although I believe it to be a problem of my DNS settings getting hosed. I couldn’t log in no matter what log I used-even as the root user.
I had a back up on the second drive of the mini. I did buy the USB drive when I bought the mini, so I was able to boot off the install disc. Then from the menu I choose the back up partion as the start up drive. After restarting, I was at least able to recover and copy my important files to the back up partition. I have not been able to work out the login issue yet. I’ll probably just do a reinstall on the corrupted drive.
In any event, it maybe worth it for you to buy the USB drive and boot off of it.
The verbose mode is for you to be able to login through the command line and trouble shoot from there.
Also, in safe mode, any files that you may want to change permissions, you may need to change the owner and then change the permissions. This is done with the chown command and then chmod command. You’ll need to use the sudo command so you can become the root user to use the commands and make any changes.
Hope this will at least help you get further in troubleshooting this issue.

  • Mini server won't boot after reinstall.

I had to reinstall Snow Leopard Server on my Mac Mini Server. I did it via a firewire connection to my MBP. Everything runs fine when I boot in target disk mode from my MBP. Problem is when I disconnect the MBP and boot just mini it gives me an error message that says I need to restart the computer. I have the two 500gb drives on the mini configured in a raid array.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,

What the heck does a Mini Server come with for Install media anyway???
Where's the  BDAqua SOP (standard operating procedure): which Mac Mini Server are we talking about? 2010 or 2011?
Did the mini ship with Snow Leopard? or is it a current 2011 model that shipped with Lion Server?
Did it always have that RAID array or was it something that you set up during the current reinstall?
I only have experience with the current 2011 Mini Server that comes with Lion Server. With that one, the included physical install media is exactly as you find with the current computers that ship with Lion pre-installed: none, none, and none. You boot from a recovery partition (be it on the internal) or on a USB key, and you download a 4+ GB folder that includes Lion + Server stuff. It's a slightly different "server bundle" from Lion client because the setup wizard after the install is specific to server.
(That's why I have no experience with the Lion Server app store two-step: purchase & install Lion client, then purchase & install (additional) Lion Server sw. My install is single, and I have only a single specific server setup wizard.)
If you save that folder, you can use it again from another computer to install back on the Mini Server put in FW target disk mode; I've done that from my MBP 13" (early 2011) and the resulting install of Lion Server on the Mini Server has always worked.

  • Server won't boot after update

This is the second server that's had this issue. I've rebooted after successful installation of updates and I get dumped at the recovery screen like this:
No amount of rebooting fixes it. Disabling automatic repair drops me to a files missing error screen (I haven't done it with this server but I did it with the last one)
No I don't have backups as I was installing updates after a fresh install of Dynamics CRM which I would really prefer not to reinstall!

    do you recall which update?
try looking and refreshing the vm config, make a small change and change back.
try adding/removing network/hard drive from VM.
also try making a copy of virtual hard drives and create a new VM from them, you will lose network information in the VM but not much else.
