Being forced to use Windows due serious Entourage 08 problems

I posted this over in Markspaces forums but my last year of many happy years of using the Mac has not been happy. I thought I'd share this as I think this issue around core software for the Mac might put the recent rise of the Mac in jeopardy. I'm sure not happy with what I might have to do but I'm thinking I'm going to have to revert to running Outlook as Entourage 08 is a mess:
I posted this as a response to a Spotlight Markspace Notes issue I encountered as a result of having to give up on Entourage due to its many issues but primarily due to its sync issues. I thought I'd post it here as a general thought on what is happening at least for me which I suspect will happen with others and thus potentially threatens the Mac:
I never would have come across this if I didn't need to stop using Entourage due to its sync issues (post at Markspace due to a Spotlight issue with their Notes app not getting properly indexed due to some problem in Leopard 10.5.5). I've talked to Microsoft again yesterday as they released an update 12.1.5 but it doesn't fix the problem. Microsoft is now being much more candid about the sync problems in Entourage. They just can't figure out how to fix it and she even said they are looking at a conduit but I can't see how this would resolve my problem as I now use both my Palm TX (had this for over 3 years now) and a BlackBerry Curve.
I told the Microsoft rep I'm actually thinking of using Outlook but I hate to have Parallels and XP running all the time as it is really intensive on the system. Also, since Outlook would be what I'd live in as it was when I ran on the PC and Entourage was when it worked on the Mac, it then begs the question well why would I write my documents on OSX - I've got XP running so just open Word in Windows (plus Outlook runs tons faster than Entourage and so does Word in XP than Word on OSX). But, now I'm really living in XP so then this really begs the question why have I got a Mac. Its cool that you can run Windows on the Mac but I only do this to say install an app to my BlackBerry or look up information that I created in Outlook in the long past or maybe peruse and an Access DB. But I really don't create any info in XP.
However, if I do decide to move back to Outlook, I'd just use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager for BlackBerry sync and Palm's desktop Manager for the Palm. In some ways, this is way more efficient than sync services under OSX as these desktops, although discrete, have been designed specifically for their respective products and thus work incredibly well. Especially in the case of the BlackBerry, its Desktop Manager is totally current and even with Missing Sync for the BlackBerry you still have to use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager for app installation and backups or as I recently did, upgraded my BlackBerry OS from 4.2.2 to 4.5. I can't really remember what the Windows Destop Manager is like for the Palm but as far as I remember, when I ran Windows, it was fine.
I just hate to see that I'm being pushed backed to Windows due to the problems in Office for the Mac 08. But, in addition, the other major app I use all the time is Quicken. My version is 2006 as Quicken has yet to release a current version. They are working on something called Quicken Financial Life for the Mac but they have been for months and they still are asking for beta testers, which I've signed up for more than once but no one has heard anything. The Windows version of Quicken is just so much better than the Mac version and they have released their 09 product. Although my 06 Mac version meets my needs it is lame against the Windows version and there are a few things in the Windows version I could put to use. But I really think here's another big software player that doesn't seem to be able to deal with the Mac and releasing an Intel product either because they are finding it too complex or just not worth the effort. I don't know why.
I suppose then my only concern with running XP continuously and running all my core apps from XP is the overhead its going to put on my machine and then really I have to ask the question well what am i using OSX for. I don't have a good answer to this but I know once I start thinking this way I'll slowly start testing sync under Windows for the BlackBerry and the Palm and if it seems viable from my virtual machine I'll just buy updated Windows version of Office and Quicken. Now I've migrated back to Windows, gone through the learning curve to get back and well even if the Mac stuff gets resolved (Office, which I think is a long way off in terms of a fix as its a mess and who knows with Quicken as there is literally no info) am I going to feel like doing the reverse of the above - maybe yes and maybe no.
I will let Apple know about this as I'm not really sure if they might be strategically aware of the impact of the failure of Microsoft to deliver a robust Office product for the Mac and Quicken as to how this could create a problem for the Mac. I don't think the Mac is a viable environment without Office unfortunately. It never would have survived if Microsoft hadn't gotten in back in the beginning, would have died if they pulled out as the threat indicated a few years ago and will cause problems once users catch on to this.

I am unwilling to attempt navigation away from these sites. The pop-ups that occur on the attempt to leave a site or to close the browser are exit traps offering incentive to stay.
Once upon a time, when the internet was less dangerous, I would be willing to close the exit pop-ups. Now, after twice being infected with malware trying to close the pop-ups, I now force close whichever browser I am using.
Recently, I clicked on the red X to close one pop-up, and it installed a trojan that I had to pay to be removed. When I clicked on 'Leave' in another exit pop, it didn't exit and it turned out I was giving permission to run a script file. Now that criminals have learned these exit pop-ups can be used to force a click action, the sites using them have become dangerous.
If I force the browser to close using Task manager, Please tell me how to stop FireFox from sending me directly back to the same site because it mistakenly believes it crashed when it did not. I forced it to close because I was on a site that had taken control of my browser and was not allowing me to leave the site.
No other browser sends me back to the potentially dangerous sites. I prefer Firefox, but the new version must have a setting that allows me to get safely away from a problem site?

    Hey there Jantje1,
It sounds like you are unable to launch iTunes and get an error message instead. I would try the troubleshooting outlined in this article named:

  • How do I stop Firefox from thinking it crashed and doing a recovery when forced to use Windows Task manager to close a bad URL that I never want to go back to?

Long question, I know :~) There are web sites that I may visit that will not allow me to exit the site, so I use Alt-Ctrl-Del in Windows to start the Task Manager and force the site to close by ending the program. The new version of Firefox (31.0) thinks that Firefox crashed and send me right back to the source of my problem.
Your documentation for this process is as follows:
    After a crash
Due to unexpected issues such as problems with a website, software errors, or an accidental loss of power, Firefox may unexpectedly close. In these situations, Firefox can restore the pages that you were visiting when it is restarted. Firefox will automatically restore your previous session, the first time you launch it after a crash.
If Firefox crashes a second time, the Restore Session (i.e. "Well, this is embarrassing") page will appear when you next launch Firefox.
...and this is what I found trying to stop this process. Next, when I am forced to use Task Manager to close Firefox a second time to stop a badware site, then the 'Well this is embarrassing' dialog appears and I am finally safely away from the URL.
I do not want Firefox automatically sending me back to a problem site.
Thank you for any procedure you can suggest to stop Firefox from restoring problem web pages, Art Clapton

  • HT2498 How do I import photos from my camera without being forced to use any silly mac software?

I haev a PC as well as a new Mac Mini.
It has always bugged me that Mac seems to force me to use a silly image managment software (like iphoto) to import photos from my camera when i plug it in.
On my PC (windows 7) it simply recognizes it as a "removable storage device" and i can access the flash memory as if it was a hard drive and simply drag my photos to a folder on my computer. (this same technique works with my iphone photos)
However on my Mac it seems there is no way to open up the flash memory and just drag photos off and manually import and manage my photos. I do not like all of the complicated software to complete a simple task like this.
Am i missing something? if so please fill me in. thanks!

Mac seems to force me to use a silly image managment software (like iphoto) to import photos from my camera
It does not force you to do that.
Open iPhoto, go to iPhoto / Preferences and change the setting so no application opens when the camera is connected.
Whether you change the setting or not, the camera does indeed appear as a "removable storage device". At least mine does:
And you can double click the camera icon and navigate the contents. The contents are shown exactly as they would be on any "storage device":
Thus you have the option in iPhoto preferences to let it do it for you, or do it yourself if that is your choice.

  • How do I play video podcasts on my TV using via Apple AV cable? After iOS 6 upgrade and being forced to use Podcast app, I'm unable to do this.

I used to be able to play video podcasts on my TV by connecting my iPod touch to the TV via an Apple AV cable.  Now that I've upgraded to ios 6 and the podcasts app got installed along with the upgrade, video podcasts will no longer play on my TV when connecting the iPod to the Tv via an Apple AV cable.  It should be noted that other video content (movies, TV shows, etc) will play when connecting the iPod to the TV via an Apple AV cable.  Is there a setting I need to make that will fix this, or is this yet another bug with the podcasts app? Or is the Podcast app for some reason designed so that you are unable to output a signal via the AV cable when playing back video content (this would be a pretty bad decision on apple's part).  Also, I have to say that I'm not happy at all with the Podcasts app, so if there's a way to uninstall it without harming the functionality of ios 6, that would be great.

I found a workaround that puts podcasts back in the video app as well as the music app so you can watch them on TV via an AV cable again.
The instructions can be found at this video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaI9GwPKXkE
    In short:
    1. Make sure both the music and podcast app aren't running on your iPhone.
    2. Plug your iPhone into your computer and disable Podcast syncing for your iPhone in iTunes.
    3. Remove the podcast app from your iPhone
    4. Plug your iPhone into your computer again and turn on podcast syncing, then sync.
    5. Turn off and then back on your iPhone.
After I did this, I found podcasts had returned to being listed in my music and video apps.
    Hope this helps you too!

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

  • System freezes due to hard disk problems only on Linux (not windows)

    Intro/context:
Recently i've bought (about 2 months) a new laptop, a Lenovo G50-70, which came with Windows 8.1. As i had no interest on that OS, i formatted the disk and installed only Arch Linux. During that time i experienced system freezes which i had no idea why they were happening. As time went by, i found disk errors on system logs related to hard drive. I searched those errors and almost everything i found was that my hard drive had problems, so i decided to use my warranty. But first, i installed the original OS back again. And after using it a couple of weeks, i didn't experiencie any problem with my hard drive (on Linux it was really frequent). Now i've installed Arch Linux back, along with original Windows 8.1, having dual boot. There is no disk problem when using Windows, but when on Arch, i have the same errors and problems i used to have. So i assume it may be related to kernel or some confniguration issue.
I also haven't noticed any relation between system freezes and system use. I mean, it can happen either under light or heavy use.
tl dr: system freezes randomly for some minutes when using linux due to hard drive problems. The problem doesn't happen on windows.
    What i've done so far:
The first period i was on Arch, i run smart (long and short), fsck, and hdparm tests. And nothing (no errors). Searched for bad blocks, and nothing. When back on windows, i also run tests on hdd and found no problems, except some sector reallocation not-that-nice indicators. These problems occured at the end of the first arch installation period. But still i currently experience no problem on windows.
I've also tried setting libata: noncq, 3.0G, noacpi, noapic kernel parameters, and had no result.
Changed BIOS setting from AHCI to Legacy, and no result. Also updated BIOS and no result.
I found no firmware update for this hard drive.
So i don't know what other thing i can try. I want to emphasize that there is no problem, no freezing, when running Windows, so i don't think it's a hard drive issue.
    Info:
Hard drive is a Toshiba 2.5" HDD MQ01ABD100 5400 rpm.
Some logs i've recollected all this time:

Something i'd noticed both the first time i was on arch and now i've reinstalled it, was that at first i didn't have this problem. I mean, when Arch was just installed. While i was installing and setting up everything.
Now, i'm not 100% sure about this, but i think problems began when using my current user. Disk is partitioned the following way:
    $ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
    sda 8:0 0 931,5G 0 disk
    ├─sda1 8:1 0 1000M 0 part
    ├─sda2 8:2 0 260M 0 part /boot
    ├─sda3 8:3 0 207,7G 0 part
    ├─sda4 8:4 0 25G 0 part
    ├─sda5 8:5 0 14,8G 0 part
    ├─sda6 8:6 0 80,5G 0 part /
    ├─sda8 8:8 0 599G 0 part /home
    └─sda9 8:9 0 2G 0 part [SWAP]
So, i believe problems, for some reason, are related (and were related), both before and now, to the /home partition, /dev/sda8 in this ocassion.
Because of this, i booted into systemd rescue mode, like root, rw, and unmounted /home partition. Despite root-only limitations, i used the system for a couple of hours, started lxqt, browsed the web mainly, and experienced no problem at all.
Now i booted normally, with my regular user, and these problems are experienced just like before (and almost instantly, like 3 or 5 minutes after starting system use).
dmesg this time showed a some different log, though it's not the first time i see this. I just didn't saved that kind of log before.

There are some sda8 (home) related messages. I also found these messages first time Arch was installed (i think also related to home partition).

  • Unable to open RSS Feeds in Safari, I am forced to use the Mail app.

Unable to open RSS Feeds in Safari, I am forced to use the Mail app.
Since I have Safari 6.0 (OS X Lion 10.7.4 on MacBook Pro bought this year)  I am being forced to use the Mail app in order to open RSS Feeds, but I do not want to use the Mail app.
Does someone please has a solution for me? People form Apple, are you reading this? It is annoying me.
    Greetings

The Corp giveth and the Corp taketh away!
250 exciting new features in Lion and 300 new problems or deleted features!
Firefox doesn't show how many unread items there are in a feed, but Safari 5.x did.  I guess I have no reason to use Safari anymore.

  • Forced to use Air SDK?

I'm trying to use Flash Builder 4.7 with our current projects. All these projects require Flex SDK 4.1 because we publish for Flash Player 10.
It's not possible to select Flex SDK 4.1, I'm being forced to use the AIR SDK 3.4. These projects don't even require Adobe air.
I'd really like to use Flash Builder 4.7 with our projects but this keeps me from using it while developing.

Im so glad I finally found this thread. I am going to move back to 4.6 if I can find the download. I tried for 2 days to get my projects at work running 4.6 to work on my laptop at home running 4.7. I have multiple library projects and I single action script project with a link to the lib projects and I still can not get it to work on 4.7. I tried making it an action script project but could only use AIR and got tons of errors, a flex project but then ran into run time issues of not being able to find packages. It has really wasted a lot of my time and my companies time. Having the option to choose SDK was a good feature. I still much prefer Flash Develop as it is a simple application but as it is not available for the Mac I am forced to use Flash Builder which I think is bloated, terrible shortcut keys and lacks so many simple features that Flash Builder comes with. Maybe some of those features are in Flash Builder but everything is so hard to find I find myself doing things the slow way just because I refuse to go digging for things for example is there an easy way to get the path to an asset qucikly into my code as an embed path. Any way, Im going off topic. Reverting back to 4.6 if I can find it although I have just spend good money on an Adobe Creative Cloud membership so hopefully I can find a 4.6 download in there but Im not that confident.
    Rant over.

  • Why are MobileMe users being forced to switch to iCloud?

Add me to the list of MobileMe subscribers who are not happy about the chance to iCloud.  I was very happy with MobileMe.  I'd much rather pay for a good product vs. being forced to use an inferior free product.  I back up all my work data to MobileMe/iDisk and I am concerned that it will not be transferred and that I may run into problems in the future.  A previous post that I just read said that data will not be transferred.  Is this true??  Also why are photos and videos not being transferred?  Can they at least be manually reloaded?

Apple have decided to terminate MobileMe - they did give a year's warning of this - eleven months ago.
iCloud does not provide general file storage of much in thue way of a Gallery; you will need to download any files which you do not already have on your Mac before the end of June.
If you want to continue with online storage and galleries you will have to find a third-party alternative. These pages examine some options:
