Being greedy - 2 sound outputs at once!

Is it possible to have 2 sound outputs active at once? This may seem rather strange but it makes sense to me. Could I send sound out thru my iMic and the pro speakers? - I think that is what they are called, 2 tennis ball sized transparent things. Is such a thing possible, if so how?
Thanks

Have you tried the Audio Midi Setup utility? If it is possible that is where you will set things up.

Hi all. I have a 2008 mac pro running snow leopard, and want to preview some sound edits with a co worker. I have a usb headphones in the usb socket, and another set of headphones in the line out.....how can I get both of these to play at the same thing at the same time rather than just one or the other?

  • Sound output channel keeps switching by itself every few seconds

Hey guys, I have this sound output issue with my Macbook pro 2010 September version that every once in a while, the audio output would keep swapping between headphone, digital output and the speakers when NO headphone or digital output or what so ever is actually plugged in. During this time i am unable to adjust sounds, and my menu bar would become very slow to respond (the sound icon and Soundsource application would stop responding during this time). After a while (could be less than 10 minutes or last to about an hour, it varies), it returns back to normal by itself.
I've read many posts on Apple forum about this issue, but i haven't found a suitable solution. Also, I read that for most, when the audio output doesn't work it would usually be a output socket issue that there is a RED light in the socket. But for me, at times it has a RED light, at times, it doesn't, and sometimes the RED light would switch on and off by itself for a couple of times, depending on how long this issue lasts until it returns to its normal state by itself.
    I have tried:
    1. plugging the headphone into the socket and take it out quickly
    2. Downloading Soundsource: i heard that Soundsource has an option of manually adjusting the sound output channel instead of letting the computer switch automatically, but unfortunately I downloaded the latest (2.5) version of the software and it doesn't have that option on my macbook pro.
    3. I also tried Cmd + Opt + P + R
The result however is that none of this worked.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have both and haven't experienced this at all. Very strange. I do get a lot of random channel changes however when I put my iPad on the remote, the cat walks over it or the dog sits on it.
That being said, I don't use the Samsung remote at all for the TV and never have done. I dislike it and find it unresponsive. I use a different remote to change through the available outputs and the Vision remote for Vision and for switching the TV on and off.

  • Digital Sound Output suddenly muted (though Apple TV is not)

I'm wondering if there's a simple explanation (and fix) to the problem.  Before upgrading iTunes and OSX to the most current versions, I encountered the problem of no output via USB.  That problem I attributed to a broken audio output jack requiring an expensive repair.  But then I discovered that by using a digital plug the "USB Audio Output" automatically appeared as "Digital Output" in the sound panel (of System Preferences).  Problem solved.  Once again I was able to output sound from my iMac to my Onkyo Receiver and Wharfdale speakers (the equipment that's next to my computer).
But now I'm seeing "Digital Out" in my Sound panel with a dimmed, muted speaker icon in my Menu Bar, indicating (correctly) that no audio is going through the output panel of the computer.  At the same time, when I switch to Apple (or Fire) TV in my Sound panel, the speaker icon in my Menu Bar plus volume waves are once again shown in bold black, indicating (correctly) that Apple TV in another room of the house is working just fine.
I confess I haven't tried unplugging Apple TV to see if this would fix my problem at my computer (which sees the greater use by far).  But it never occurred to me (til now) that Audio via the computer's Output Jack and Audio via Wi-Fi and Fire TV might be an "either / or" proposition.  If it is, I can live with it.  If I can have both, that would make living all the easier.
    Thanks for any illumination,
    Cap

I'm back in business.  Something happened, and the digital output is once again pushing audio from my imac to my receiver-amp.

  • Having problems choosing sound output through HDMI to my television, any one any ideas?

Though listed in the sounds options, I can't seem to choose a sound output to my TV through HDMI. I have sound output to headphones via the headphone socket or usb, but when I highlight to the HDMI TV option it justs returns to the top of the list, any ideas anyone?

About alsa dmix, and for the record:
On an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     E7500  @ 2.93GHz, the following are my finding about
quality/cpu when mixing two streams at 44khz:
    a snippet from my .asoundrc
    #converter "samplerate_best" # perfect: 16%cpu, maybe overkill
    #converter "samplerate_medium" # almost perfect: 6%cpu
    #converter "samplerate" # good: 4%cpu, definitely usable
#converter "samplerate_linear" # bad: 2%cpu, way better than default wine resampler
#converter "samplerate_order" # very bad: 2%cpu, like the default wine resampler
Here is the reference topic: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=942724
I may be wrong, but in an opensource world (code reusing), i really doubt pulseaudio could lead to better quality/cpuuse tradeoff.
Pulseaudio, being just another layer atop of alsa, could only lead to higher cpu usage.

  • Sound output stuck on Airplay on OLD Macbook Pro

This should not even be possible, since AirPlay is not even available on my late-2008 Macbook Pro...but my system preferences show that sound is being routed to my AppleTV via AirPlay!!
I have zero sound coming from my Macbook.  None with speakers attached, and none with nothing attached at all.  I go into System Preferences>Sound>Output, and AppleTV is somehow, impossibly, selected.  I can not unselect it.
I have rebooted my laptop, and rebooted AppleTV, and nothing works.
    Help!

Have you tried SMC or PRAM reset?
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Device for sound output changing randomly

After the latest OS update, I've been having issues with my sound output settings. My sound will play most the time through the "line out" setting, but then randomly the "sound effects" will play thru the internal speakers. I keep changing the setting in the "sound" panel of system prefs but it keeps changing randomly on me. I've saved the setting and rebooted and thought it would be fine, but it keeps doing it. Once my Sound Output setting were changed too, and my music just started playing thru the internal speaker.
Anyone know what's up with this, and what could correct the problem?

It may sound silly, but from my own experience (having had exactly the same problem while working on a soundtrack) after snooping around I found that the plug/cable I was using (a cheapo cable) was somehow the guilty party.
It fit snugly, no wobble, no crackling, changed the cable and all problems went away.
Same cable works 100% now used to hook up the iPhone to the mixer.
Seems to make no sense, and yet... voodoo (or a badly soldered plug).

  • System sound output switchery

    Hi everybody,
I'm having a very strange problem that I haven't figured out how to reproduce just yet but thought I'd give it a try on the forums anyway...
The problem is that the system sound output in the audio prefernce pane seems to be randomly* switching from "Digital Out" to the next one in line, my bluetooth headset. So, if my headset is turned off I get all kinds of "error connecting to bluetooth device" messages and if it's on, the battery drains quickly from connecting and disconnecting all the time. I should mention that Digital out is working beautifully; it's just that I'm getting these bluetooth errors all the time as something is switching the audio out from "Digital Out" to my headset.
*I'm sure there's a cause, but I haven't been able to put my finger on it just yet.
Sorry I can't be more specific at this time...
    Cheers,
    Ryan

OK, I've found that the problem only occurs when watching a movie in dolby digital (VLC or DVD Player) and a sound is played in iTunes or an event happens such as receiving an IM. This is beginning to make sense to me as the receiver after all is receiving a dolby digital signal, and wouldn't be able to play a stereo stream while it has its hands full with the dolby digital. (I guess? Correct me if I'm wrong... anyway the receiver LED can only display stereo or digital, not both at once!)
So my question becomes, how to stop OS X from directing these sounds to my bluetooth headset. There must be a way just to turn off all other sounds while I'm watching a movie in 5.1 or send them to /dev/null or something, anything other than repeatedly connecting/disconnecting with my headset or displaying annoying warning messages.

  • NO SOUND output (except for start-up chime) on MacBook Pro

I've been looking all over the discussion boards but haven't been able to figure this one out.
Suddenly for no apparent reason I have no sound output. I've checked all the settings, repaired disk permissions, restarted, etc. with no effect. I DO get the start-up chime but then nothing. Also, I do NOT have a red light emitting from my adio out jack. F3, F4 and F5 show the volume icon changing on-screen but with no actual sound output. Switching to a speakers or earphones doesn't change it either.
The only thing I can think of is that my battery has been slowly dying and has just recently started to crap out when the battery life indicator shows more than 50% charge. For this reason the computer has lost power and suddenly shut down once or twice without having been properly shut down. But the loss of sound input did NOT happen directly after this.
    Any suggestions?

    I Finally figured it out...
For some reason, my audio setting got changed in my audio prefs:
    System settings --> Audio
On the "Sound Effects" tab, it was set to "Internal Speakers", which explains why I was getting the startup chime, and alert sounds just fine.
However on the "Output" tab, it somehow got changed to "Sunflower" which causes the sound not to work. As soon as I changed it to "Internal Speakers" everything went back to normal.
    Hope that helps!

    Hello,
i've been on this for a week now, not getting anywhere.

so, is it possible to duplicate & reroute the default card's pcm or master channel back into the default card's Line channel (Line in)?
If you're talking about the analog audio path the answer is maybe. But fair warning, you'll be spending many more hours (maybe) getting it to work while wallowing real deep in today's integrated audio hardware and ALSA if you want to use this method.
the soundcard is a basic laptop intel chip.
This is the first thing you need to learn. That chip is generic and found on almost all modern x86 motherboards. Where the audio magic actually happens is the "codec" chip and the vendor/model varies. The HDA Intel chip merely "talks" to the codec chip which sits "behind" the HDA Intel chip on the bus.
So the first step is to figure out which codec chip is installed and then determine if you can "manually" connect the "virtual wires" inside the codec to make a connection from the output (play) to the input (capture).
One way that you might find which codec you have is to enter:
        less /proc/asound/cardX/codec#Y
where "X" is your card number and "Y" is the codec number
Just look for "Codec:" near the top. Also, there's gobs of other good info in that file that will be used in a moment.
The codec chip contains what I call "virtual wires" that connect it's internal components (amplifiers, mixers, ADCs, DACs, etc). ALSA gathers info from BIOS and determines which connections to enable, but I've found that most codec chips have many connections that are not enabled. More importantly in this case, I've also found that many chips have a connection from the output (play) to the input (capture), it's just not enabled... and that may (or may not) also be the case for your chip. I've been able to enable the internal connections in my chips to create a hardware loopback so that Line Out is connected to Line In... so what you hear in the speakers is also sent to ALSA's capture interface... and the capture level is independently adjustable.
So how would you inspect and change these "virtual wires"? With a program called hda-analyzer. It will use the data in the /proc/asound directory (and more) to show you how your codec is wired in both text and graphics form, along with allowing you to change it. One way to get it is by running this command:
    wget -O run.py http://www.alsa-project.org/hda-analyzer.py
I'll leave it to you to figure out which dependency packages need to be installed, but once you install them, run:
    python2 run.py
where it will download yet more code (possibly in the /dev/shm directory) and will barf because you either need to install yet more dependency packages to run hda_analyzer.py, or simply because it tried to automatically run it using python3 (because it's also a python2 program, so run it manually like: "python2 hda_analyzer.py").
Once you get it running, the confusion factor will probably kick into high gear. Take your time and poke around. Get your bearings somewhat by clicking on "Graph" to display the wiring layout and hover your mouse over the square blocks and the wires. As I said in a previous post, if you can download the datasheet for your codec chip, it may help if it includes an internal diagram:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=147208
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1089243
Any changes you make to the "wiring" are instantaneous (so you can try it while making changes) and will go away on a reboot. Clicking "Exp" will create a python script of your changes that you can run later to make those connections again from the command line.
Good luck, and I'll check back to help if I can find the time... that is if you're up for such a major challenge.

    ==USB problem==
The MSI MEGA STICK do not work with the MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR.
When you plug it, its recognized, you can write on the MEGA STICK, delete files but cannot READ from MEGA STICK. It freezes while display "reading". I have tried on lots of PCs. Only my MSI motherboard do not work properly. The same problem with my 2 MEGA STICK. And i had tried Windows XP and Linux. Same problem. Others USB devices works fine. Even card readers...

My optical wireless mouse do not works properly. When i turns on the computer, it works ok. If i restart, do not work. Restart again, works. And go on... Only this mouse. Others MB works fine.
    ==Sound Output==
And also with my sound output. The eletrical one (coaxial).
It do not work with my 5.1 home system. It works fine with my old SB Live. It gets worse when i use my tv output from my Radeon 9100. It only works SOMETIMES when the tv output is not plugged in.
Thanks to all that could help me.

    Mega stick.
have you updated the firmware ?
No. It Freezes before being able to update. Also the update do not tell about solving this problem
    "Firmware version: 2.05
    Update items
    1. Improve delete MP3 and voice files function.
    2. Fix device will restart while forward/backward Voice file."
you do know that windows xp does not come with usb2 drivers.
sp1 does and you have to install them yourself.
go to device manager and delete all usb entries and reboot and windows will install the usb2 drivers next time you boot.
if you get a slipstreamed version of xp you dont need to do this as it installed usb2 drivers rightaway.
slipstream means a xp disc with sp1 on it.
My XP cd is already SP1. Also tried on BIOS to use only USB 1.1V
    PS2.
tried to use the other ps2 contact ?
No. Could i use the keyboard PS2 to plug the mouse?

  • No Sound Output from front headphones jack on HPE-070a

Two days ago, i purchased a new HPE-070a with Windows 7 64-bit and Realtek HD Audio Drivers. Unfortunately, while the sound output to the speakers from the rear jack is working really well, the headphone jack at the front of the box has no output. I've updated the Realtek drivers and reinstalled them as well, but when I run the troubleshooter, it tells me that "sound playing not functioning". The PC recognises that, once the headphones are in that's where the sound is output, but there's nothing going on.
If you've got any ideas, it'd be greatly appreciated if you could let me know. If i don't have headphones, my girlfriend's going to be assaulted with Counter Strike and Dragon Age!
    Thanks.

Beaker, have you checked in the Control Panel to assure that all boxes are checked correctly?  It may be that the headphone jack is not enabled.
