Belkin Express Dock

I had read in several places on the net where the Belkin Express Dock was a wonderful device providing two Thunerbolt ports, a Firewire 800 port and some USB3 ports.  Various pictures I found on the internet showed one Thunderbolt port on the front and other pics showed two in the back along with the other ports.  I bought the thing and I just opened it up.  There are two Thunderbolt ports on the back alright but there is no input port on the front.  I went to the Belkin website and looked for some info on how to set it up thinking maybe there's a hidden port somewhere.  Nope.  They show how to connect the dock to the computer using one of the two Thunderbolt ports.  This leaves me right where I started, with one available Thunderbolt port, only now the available port is on the dock rather than the computer.  That can't be right.  Where are my two Thunderbolt ports?  I gotta be missing something here.  Yes?

Post in Belkin's forums - http://www.belkin.com/us/support-article?articleNum=10057 or download the dock's user manual if one did not come with the one you purchased - http://www.belkin.com/us/contact-support/update

  • Thunderbolt to USB3 using Belkin Express Dock

I am using the Belkin express Dock Thunderbolt to USB3 . My 2011 laptop 2.5GHz-i7 with 10.7.5  does not mount the Seagate 2TB USB3 drive using the Belkin Express Dock.  If I plug the USB3 cable directly into the Laptop it will mount the Seagate drive as USB 2…  Yuk
Am I missing a driver?   Disk Utility will not see the Seagate drive when plugged thru the Thunderbolt into the Belkin Express Dock and then out the USB3.

  • Ethernet connectivity using Belkin Express Dock

If you find this post helpful, please add to the thread.
    My issue:
I am using a Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock and was unable to get the ethernet port to work.  I spent hours on the phone with Belkin support but ultimately solved the problem on my own.  When asked, I was told that Belkin support staff doesn't have any Apple computers, nor can they send or receive eMails.  Enough Belkin support bashing for now, I do like some of their products.
After connecting the Thunderbolt Express Dock to my laptop, all ports were working except I was unable to get my ethernet working.  I could use wireless connectivity, but being old school, I prefer a physical connections.  The solution is simple once you know it.
I disconnected everything from my laptop, went into System Preferences / Network.  Depending on your location (top pull down), there are various interface options that appear on the left side.  Typically an active interface is indicated by a green dot to the left of the interface.  A red dot indicates an interface that is inactive.  I started with a new location with no interfaces.  Clicking the "+" at the bottom left of the window, you get a list of available interfaces.  For a Retina MacBook Pro, you get the following selection:
When I pluged the Apple Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor into one of my Thunderbolt ports, the list of choices expands to include "Thunderbolt Ethernet".  In other words the list is dynamic based on what the hardware configuration is.  One of the reasons I bought the Belkin Express dock was to eliminate the need for the Apple Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor, but I wanted to go slowly and see what changed as I connected devices back to my laptop.
I then removed the Apple adaptor and connected the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock to my laptop, hit the "+" and got the following list:
Notice both "Thunderbolt FireWire" and "Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Controller".  I selected the very poorly labeled Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Controller as my interface and everything worked perfectly.  I think also added in the other interfaces that I am likely to use and saves this configuration as my new "Location".  All is good now.
The point of the story for Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock users is that the ethernet interface is very poorly labeled as Broadcom NetXtreme.
The point of the story for anyone having internet connectivity issues it that you might want to try comparing what possible interfaces your computer allows if nothing is connected to the computer and then again after you connect a device capable of providing connectivity.
    I hope this helps!!

  • Why doesn't the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock relay sound from it's audio out port?

Why can't my Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock operate my desktop speakers?
    Options
    07-14-2014 01:48 PM
Bought a Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock at the Apple Store to use with my new MacBook Pro.
When I connected it to my
    -20" Mac Cinema display,
-Various USB connected hubs and devices,
    -Various Firewire hubs and devices
-My ethernet network from my Cable Modem
Then made the last connection from the Dock to the Thunderbolt port on the MacBook Pro...
    All was fine.
But when I made that one last connection - to my desktop speakers via the audio-out port on the dock (earphones icon) nothing happened.  The dock did not pick up the audio from the laptop playng an iTunes song or send it to the desktop speakers.  When I unplugged the audio cable from the Dock and plugged it in to the MacBook Pro directly, the desktop speakers kicked right in again.
Does Thunderbolt pick up audio-out from a MacBook Pro and carry it to the Dock for connection to my desktop speakers?
Of for some reason, can that signal not be carried by Thunderbolt?
Will I have to get used to the onerous task of unplugging 2 cables from my MacBook Pro when I want to more it to another location in stead of just 1 cable?
But stay with me.  Here's the thing.
When this happened I called Belkin Customer Support to ask if they could help me.  After taking me through their steps, they agreed that the unit must be defective and agreed to ship me a replacement Thunderbolt Express Dock.
The replacement arrived over the weekend and when I shut down my system and then plugged everything from Dock I purchased into the replacement Thunderbird Express Dock - - - - - the same thing happened!
No signal to the speakers from the dock.  Perfect signal when the plug moved from the Dock to the computer itself.
    Hence my question:
Does Thunderbolt pick up audio-out from a MacBook Pro and carry it to the Dock for connection to my desktop speakers?
    Can it accomplish that function?
Am I really that unlucky to have received 2 defective new Belkin Thunderbolt Express Docks in a row?
Or is it simply a matter of the Dock not handling audio throughput in the manner I am expecting.
Then again, if this is the case, why did the Belkin techies not know this when I called them in the first place.
Yes, I'm going on and on here.  But I really don't have time for this.
    What's going on here?

OK.  No reason to be playing games here.  Just surprised that this issue hasn't been brought up here on the community boards as well.  Here's the simple solution

After reaching a Level III technician in Belkin customer support today and having spent approximately 4-5 person hours on this issue, we figured out that the Sound/Output preferences in the Apple System Preferences should not be set to "Internal Speakers"  but rather set to "USB PnP Sound Device".
Worked like a charm.  Simple, elegant solution to a real problem, one likely to be encountered by 90% of the people who buy a Belkin Thunderbid Express Dock off the shelves of any Apple Store to use with a current generation Apple laptop or desktop computer.
But the Level III Belkin technician admmtted that this critical little piece of simple, straightforward information should have been readily available to their Level 1 techies who began helping me 5 person hours ago.  Would even have saved Balkin loads of customer service support time.
    And so the saga ends
Belkin owes me for helping them learn this precious lesson.

  • Connecting Dell UltraSharp U2212HM to Belkin Thunderbolt Dock

Hi , ive just bought a new MBPro 13 retina and also a Dell UltraSharp U2212HM and a Belkin Thunderbolt express Dock so that i can connect via single th/bolt cable, could anyone help me with regards to which cable that i need to connect the monitor to the dock? thank you

Hi there, I just bought a Belkin thunderbolt dock and I want to ask that can't I use additional thunderbolt port to output a mini DP signal to my ASUS PA279q?
Because when I plug into the ports, it start refreshing 2~3 seconds a time. Seems my screen doesn't get the signal.
P.S. I use Apple thunderbolt cable to connect my Macbook Pro Classic 2012 and mini DP to HDMI cable to connect between dock and screen.

  • Belkin Thunderbolt Dock -- only works when lid open

I just purchased a Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock for MacBook Air. However, my external monitor (an Asus) only fires up and displays the desktop when the lid is open on my MacBook. I would prefer to be able to simply dock the closed MacBook, connect to the Thunderbolt Dock, and get working. Solutions? Thanks...

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
To use 'Clamshell Mode' (external screen on with laptop closed) you need to connect an external keyboard and mouse then close the lid to put the MBP to sleep then touch a keyboard key to wake the external screen again.
Make sure you run System Preferences/Displays and set the external preference panel to it's best resolution before doing this.

  • Belkin lightning dock no longer works with iOS8.1 update

I have the Belkin aluminium dock and since the update to 8.1 it no longer works with my iPhone 5S or 6 plus. I've tried reboots and resets, can't get it to work.
I just get the 'this accessory may not be supported' message.
Anyone have a fix for this?

quit iPhoto, Delete the iPhoto preference file ("your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> comn.apple.iPhoto.plist) and launch iPhoto and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it

  • Bootcamp and Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock?  Does it work?

Anyone try this combination out with Windows 8.1 running on the boot camp side?  With a VGA monitor plugged into a Display Port Adapter into the Thunderbolt port and with a USB keyboard and mouse into one of the USB ports in the Belkin dock.
    Is this something that works?

Ordinarily, with FileVault a user is chosen in the pre-boot authentication dialog, and then logged in automatically after the system boots. Before that happens, the OS isn't running at all, so there would be nothing for the peripherals to do.

  • Dell/Belkin DJ Dock for my Zen To

Does anyone know if i can buy this in the UK or does it have to be E-bay? also will it be compatible with our electrics here too? would appreciate some feed back on this thanks.

FM transmitters will work with pretty much any MP3 player e.g. those by Belkin, AudiaX (although they are technically illegal in the UK).
Portable speakers are made by Creative e.g. Travelsound, Playdock, and there are many 3rd party makes out there.
If your hi-fi has an auxilary in plug of some description, normally a twin phono socket, then you just need to buy a suitable audio wire to connect it. Typically a mini jack to twin phono plugs, which is very easy to buy at any reasonably hi-fi store.

  • Two external monitors + ethernet on the Macbook Pro Retina (late 2013)

The new MacBook Pro 13" retina have 2 thunderbolt connectors and one HDMI but no ethernet port (how pro is that?).
As the title of this post suggest, I want to drive two external monitors as well as an ethernet port.
1.) Is there a dock that woudl allow such setup out of the box?
    -OR-
2.) Using the Macbook Pro's two thunderbolt ports and the following adapters:
    - Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet,
    - Mini DisplayPort to DVI (is this actually thunderbolt compat?).
Can once of the thunderbolt connector be splitted or chanied to drive etiher: two screens or one screen + ethernet?
Or would I also need to use the HDMI port in such case? If so is there any performance difference between the Macbook Pro's HDMI port and the thunderbolt ports? Can all these be run concurrently i.e. thunderbolt display and the HDMI port?
The monitors both have DVI-D connectors.

Thunderbolt expansion docks are beginning to appear.  "They ain't cheap."   This one would support what you want to do ... Belkin Express Dock  (using both Thunderbolt ports on your MBP)
Thunderbolt devices can be daisy-chained however I don't believe that means it will support 2 displays on the same chain.
miniDisplayPort and Thunderbolt are co-compatible.   You can plug a miniDisplayPort cable into the Thunderbolt port in order to connect a display.
DVI and HDMI are co-compatible.  You should only need an appropriate cable to connect the display to the MBP's HDMI port.

  • External hard drive adaptor

The USB ports on my MacBook Pro (Early 2011) aren't working and I want to use this external hard drive to back up my things (Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive for Mac (STBW1000900)). What's the least expensive adaptor I could use to connect the hard drive (which connects through USB 3) to my Thunderbolt port? Could I just use a general USB to Thunderbolt/Firewire adaptor if I'm not concerned with speed?

Could I just use a general USB to Thunderbolt/Firewire adaptor if I'm not concerned with speed?
No.  You cannot connect a USB device to a Thunderbolt or Firewire interface.   They are completely different and you risk frying your external hard drive and/or your TB/FW port if you were to do so.   (The plugs are also completely different, so you couldn't do it even if you tried.)
There are also no TB-USB or FW-USB adapters that I know of.  Again, because USB is not compatible with them.
Some expansion docks have started appearing on the market, however.  They are not cheap, but one like the Belkin Express Dock would connect to your MBP via Thunderbolt and give you 3 USB-3  ports.

  • MacBook Pro Docking Dilemma

Hey everyone! I'm buying a new MBP for college and would like to dock it in my dorm. I thought that the Thunderbolt Display (TBD) was exactly what I needed, but after seeing mixed reviews, limited port availability, and a hefty price tag, I decided to expand my research. During which, I came across a few questions.
First, here are my problems with the TBD:
Mostly, bad reviews and cost. (1000$)
But also, I'd like my display to have HDMI capabilities for entertainment (Xbox/Apple TV) that the TBD lacks. I get that I could Thunderbolt-HDMI, but with TBD only having one Thunderbolt port already locked up by the MBP I'm connecting to it, I don't see very many options.
My only two guesses are either: Daisy chain a device with more than one Thunderbolt port and then Thunderbolt-HDMI in the second port, or Firewire-Thunderbolt and then Thunderbolt-HDMI. Both of which I'm pretty sure wouldn't work, along with bringing more hassle and clutter to a already VERY (and I mean very) confined space.
But hey, I'm happy with 3 USB ports, so that's a plus.
Enter the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock (BTED). With fantastic reviews and a reasonable price (200$) this was the culmination of my research.
Benefits of the BTED are as follows:
    Great reviews and palatable cost.
Same ports as the TBD + an additional Thunderbolt port and audio jacks.
Now, the first Thunderbolt port will be used connecting my MBP to the dock, and the second will be used connecting the new display to the dock. Seemingly, this would create the same HDMI void. However, with a display like the Dell UltraSharp U2412M monitor (260$), that comes with a HDMI port, that void would be nonexistent. All I'd have to do is buy a Thunderbolt-DVI-D adapter to connect the Dell to the Dock.
If you tl;dr this post, you can just look at these questions:
Is the TBD a worthy investment? Does anybody have it and love it?
Does the TBD have HDMI capabilities that I'm unaware of?
Is the Belkin Dell combo a smart idea? ie: I'm running a MBP with non-apple products, which I've known to be dangerous. Would there be any hiccups with the adapters, cables, etc?
Sorry if this is too long, but your responses would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mitch

I haven't read a whole lot of good reviews for the TBD. I can't decide if I want one either considering those reviews and the price of the screen. If I were you, I would just get like a 32" flatscreen over the TBD as it's a lot cheaper and it can do what you want. It may not have the same picture quality as the TBD but it might last longer and work better. As far as MacBook choices, you have three and they all will be able to connect to a flatscreen. The Air and the non-retina Pro have one Thunderbolt port. You could buy either a Thunderbolt-VGA or Thunderbolt to HDMI. The retina display Pros have two Thunderbolt Ports and an HDMI port. So you could either use the HDMI port or use the Thunderbolt Port. If you get a flatscreen over a TBD, you could save money and put that towards a higher-end MacBook. I would try and stay away from the non-retina Pro only because I've had a very bad experience with one. It was my first MacBook that we bought brand new September 2013. In less than a year, Apple had to replace three logic boards, two hard drives, hard drive cable, hard drive bracket, graphics card, and clam shell. They covered it every time since it was under warranty. If you're on a budget, get a MacBook Air with the 128GB hard drive or higher. If you have the money, make the stretch and get at least a retina pro with 256GB hard drive. I have that model and it's great for what I do. I'm a high school student, mobile DJ, photographer, and light gamer and it fits all my needs. I have a dock set up in my room that connects it to a 19" Dell monitor, Apple wireless keyboard, magic mouse, and external speakers. I will hopefully be replacing the monitor with a 32" flat screen.
