Belkin Firewire 6 port Hub and iSight

I'm having problems getting my computer to recognize my iSight when it's plugged in to the Belkin hub. Basically it will only see the iSight if I unplug it and replug it in. The camera is not recognized at Restart or Shutdown/Startup. Works fine when plugged directly into the Mac. I have two other devices plugged into the hub: my 30G iPod and an 80G Lacie Porsche firewire drive (portable not separately powered). Any ideas?

You might want to try another FireWire hub instead of the Belkin, or you could replace the La Cie drive with one that has its own power supply.
A more proactive solution would be to replace your PowerBook with a new MacBook Pro laptop with a built-in USB camera.
Personally, I would avoid an external hard drive of any kind that does not have its own power supply.

  • Belkin F5U237 7 Port Hub

I bought Belkin F5U237 7 Port Hub from Amazon UK about a month ago (to replace a dead Belkin 4 port hub) If it is powered up my G4 Dual 1GHz will not boot at all - if I disconnect the hub power the G4 reboots OK I then connect the hub power and it works as advertised! A cheap and no-name 4 port hub I scrounged works OK why can't the Belkin?
Belkin technical support (an oxymoron) have been of little assistance, I am out of time regards returning to Amazon and what really grips me is that I paid the extra £5.00 for the so-called Apple version (turns out I paid the extra for silver paint)
Any suggestions most welcome, Belkin suggest that there may be a legacy setting that can get me around this issue...
    Regards
    Tez

If you have an open PCI slot there are some cards with USB 2 that you can install. OWC has several choices, but I am not sure of the best source for you in the UK.
IO Gear has a USB 2 Model or a USB 2/FW 400 Combo that might be of interest. They have worked OK on my G4.
I am not sure why the hub you got would not work properly. I have an earlier production one of what I think is the same model which works OK, but I do have it running off of a PCI card USB 2 port so that it has USB 2 speed.

  • Belkin Firewire Hub Not working

I purchased a Belkin Firewire 6-Port Hub unit and plugged all of my firewire gear into it and it is not working. The unit is glowing green and is connected to my iMac so that is all good.
I read the back of the package and it says the following....
To use the hub your computer must feature a built in firewire host adapter or be equipped with a firewire host adapter upgrade card.
Does the Intel Core 2 Duo based iMac have either one of these? Could this be my problem?

I had one external hard drive plugged in (with its own power supply), my Digi002 Rack plugged in (with its own power supply) and a cable to my camcorder. I turned my hard drive on and the icon would not appear. I just unplugged everything and now the hard drive works. I guess I will just take the belkin back or sell it on amazon.
I have a belkin usb hub and that thing works great! I guess the firewire hubs are kind of finiky.
There really was not exact place to plug the firewire cable into the hub that connects to the computer, unlike the usb hub. I thought that a bit odd. Perhaps I pluggede the cable from the computer into the wrong spot on the hub so the hub was not recognized by the computer?

  • Airport Extreme, with Belkin usb 7 Port powered hub, with printer & 2 HD's

I have the Belkin usb 7 Port hub going into the Airport Extreme, my Macbook Pro sees the printer and prints fine, but doesn't see the 2 western digital mini hard drives My AE still has a green light. Is there something else I have to do? Thanks, Schooner

    Hi Schooner17-
    Are the drives bus-powered?
If so, do they work with the hub on a Mac? Do the drives work 1 at a time?
That hub might not supply enough juice to power both drives.
    Luck-

  • Are those USB port hubs safe to use?

I bought one of those Belkin USB 4 port Hubs so that I can have more USB ports on my iMac.
I have the one that needs external power.
I was curious as to wether they can cause any damage to my iMac's ports? Here I am using 4 ports on this hub which is connected to a port on the iMac that is designed for 1 device right? Not 4 devices.
So can using 4 devices via a hub connected to a USB port designed to have 1 device to it, cause any damage to the ports?
Also - what about data corruption?
If I have 4 drives connected to the USB Hub, transferring files between them and to the computer, could this cause data to become corrupt?
So far I've had no problems but I use these USB ports to transfer large amounts of iimpotant data and cant afford anything going wrong..
    -Frank

It is perfectly safe (and encouraged by Apple) to use USB hubs. In fact, USB will support up to 127 peripherals chained together over one USB port. The only concern may be if a hub loses power in the middle of a file transfer, or gets disconnected. But that is the same for everything.
I have used USB hubs for many years without any problems.

  • USB 7-port hub (powered) crashing G5 isight 10.4.11 and g4 soccer ball 10.3.9 iMacs--why, how fix?

It's definitely the usb 2.0 7-port hub--Staples brand, which they think is Belkin--hub several years old and fine until just recently, and happens with a brand new hub, too (also Staples, also believed to be Belkin).  The crash is a total freeze, usually during startup, restart, and shutdown but occasionally during app usage (esp. Safari).  Happens more when a jump drive is being accessed, but also happens when simply empty hub is on the system.  Get the slightly grey screen with small black box with message in 4 languages saying that I must restart my mac.  Have to hold down the power button for several seconds, or pull the power cord out, to get the mac to shut down, and then (if the hub is disconnected from the mac--direct usb hub connect, by the way, not from keyboard, and yes it has its own power supply--) it freezes during startup and needs the forced shutdown, followed by restart with forced shutdown a total of 3 times before all is good with the mac (with the hub no longer able to be used, though).  If the hub is left on the system, three-fourths of the restarts freeze and application freezes are more common.
I did Apple Hardware Test and I used TechTool Pro and Disk Utility (using a startup OS DVD) and there were no hardware problems found, and I zapped the PRAM, I reloaded the OS and updated to 10.4.11 three times, I wiped the hard disk and reloaded the OS and updated to 10.4.11 two times, and nothing fixes it if I keep using the hub.  I had a local person check out my G5 and clean the insides out and he found no hard disk, fans, dust, connections, etc. problems and could not reproduce my problem (he didn't attach anything but a mouse, keyboard, and ethernet cable for internet), but I reproduced it immediately with both the old and brand new hubs.
And I get the same problem with my G3 soccer ball iMac with OS 10.3.9 (or whatever the "newest" 10.3 version is), and that machine also had been just fine until recently.  But I don't know what's new that made this happen--was fine for several years until just recently.  My only changes recently have been the following, and while things got much worse in the last 4 weeks, there were some earlier problems with occasional freezes and jump drives not showing up on the hub prior to these updates:  update firmware for Apple Extreme base station, update MS Office 2004 with April 2011 updater (the former done via the G5, the latter done on both machines).
Oh, and my dock icon for widgets on the G5 has disappeared.
I haven't tried anything with my intel machine--it has a 4-port usb hub on it and has no problems--wife uses it.
I need at least 3 powered usb slots (printer, 16 Gb jump drive, wireless mouse) in addition to the keyboard slot, and sometimes I have 2 jump drives on the system at the same time and a usb headset.
Does anyone have any info on why this is happening, and more importantly, how to fix it?  Are there any USB hub makers that I should use instead of Belkin?  Is there some USB port firmware update I should get?  Will an intel Machine with 10.5 or 10.6 etc. fix this?  I'd like to avoid the expense of upgrading machines and OS for a few more months, at least.
    Thanks.
[email protected] for any direct answers not wanted to be left here.

The gray screen with the box is a kernel panic.  When you restart, doesn't it tell you there was a problem and gives you the option of sending a report to Apple?  Near the top of that long report might be some clues as to what in particular caused the panic.

  • Belkin MacMini 6 Port USB/Firewire Hub  F5U507

Does anyone have the Belkin F5U507 6 Port MacMini USB/Firewire Hub?
I want to buy it but I'm hesitating, being concerned that it doesn't have its own AC power unit to attach to the wall socket.
It does look nice, matching up to the Mini, but I don't want it to be a case of more form than substance.
    Any recommendations?
    Thanks.

Well, this may be an "oopsie" for me then. I just purchased this hub a couple of days ago from the Apple store (my powered Belkin hub - the lozenge-shaped one - just failed).
I was wondering how they got around the fan-out issue with the new hub being unpowered. Well, I have time to cancel the order.

  • MacBook Pro + Belkin Firewire Hub

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro and I use a 5 port Belkin Firewire Hub that has a Lacie d2, Lacie Portable and Firewire Audio Interface attached. Right now the hub has just stopped working and I keep restarting and nothing happens. It happened on Sunday aswell after I brought my MacBook to a gig and I shut the laptop down and went to bed. In the morning it was fine. I can't have this happening all the time because all of my synth libraries are on these hard drives and I need those all the time...
    Any ideas?

Sometimes Firewire chains can get 'confused' - try unplugging everything for an hour or so and then reconnect them live/hot in the sequence you require. (And, there could be a hardware fault in the hub ...)

  • Airport Extreme, Belkin USB Hub, and external hard drive

I'm having a serious meltdown. I've been at this all day long and I've reviewed SEVERAL, if not all, discussion threads. I've seen my question many times on many threads, but yet to find a solution!
Just got the hub, and I tried today to connect the Belkin USB hub so I could get my external hard drive accessible from my Mac. My external drive worked fine on my PC. I recently moved to Mac.
Printer works with no issue at all, but my external drive does not even list in either the Disk Utility or System Profiler. It just doesn't get recognized. I've tried EVERYTHING...switching ports, connecting directly to my Macbook, restarting, etc., etc., etc. NOTHING.
Anyone have any insight to this? I'm ready to throw in the towel.

Ok I'll try that! Uh oh...now I can't even see the external drive on my PC! I also spent some time looking at the manufacturer's website to see if there's any software I may have downloaded before using the hard drive, but the website is not helpful in that capacity (www.cavalrystorage.com). I don't remember having software when I first started using it. Furthermore, I just looked at paperwork I received when I got the drive back in Nov.06 and it says not to use "the CD if you have Windows", (to install a driver, perhaps?) which of course, I did. But now I can't find what disc I may have gotten with the drive. It also had no specific instructions for a Mac. Although the external drive has wonderful reviews, and says you can use it with a PC or Mac. I hope this helps. I certainly appreciate your help!
I'm starting to think something has gone awry with the external hard drive? I've tried connecting through the hub (my printer works at least!), direct to AirPort, and direct to laptop and nothing.

  • Firewire port hub??

I would like to use an external drive as my scratch disc. My Powerbook has only the one firewire port. The person at the Apple Store suggested that I could connect both my video camera and the external hard drive (both of which use firewire cables) using a 6-port hub. Is this likely to work? Thanks.

Perhaps I'm getting closer...I hooked up my LaCie drive and Canon ZR900 camera to my Powerbook using a firewire hub. I reset the scratch disk (improperly???) for the LaCie. Files seemed to capture fine, I rendered all, but when I played back from the time line, there was no sound. When I hooked up the camera directly to the laptop and reset the scratch disk back to the internal HD, everything worked fine. Am I setting up the scratch disk improperly? Thanks.

  • 800 FIREWIRE PORT HUB

I need a hub that I can use to connect both my video camera & my external hard drive at the same time, so I can save my raw video directly to my
external hard drive from iMovie on my new 27" iMac.  I have a cable that fits the 800 port for my Canon GL1 camcorder.  Can someone suggest
a hub I can purchase that will accommodate two FireWire connectors and fit my computer port or/and do I need some adapter also?
I am still learning the lingo so I hope I asked this correctly.
    Thank you for your help.

Firewire 800 hubs/repeaters are fairly rare.  My recent searching found 4 sources (alphabetically):
    Kramer Tools - has models with 2, 3, 4, and 8 ports.  http://www.KramerElectronics.com.
    NitroAV - has an 8 port hub/repeater.   http://www.NitroAV.com
Sonnet - Has an adapter (Ying Yang) that alllows both FW 400 & FW 800 to be pluged into new Macs with FW 800 (3 ports)   http://www.sonnettech.com

  • Belkin Firewire hub not supporting usb optical drive

I got a Belkin Firewire 400 6 pin hub and was going to use the firewire 400 bus to power 3 external burners that are usb 2.0. When I plugged the hub into my computer I noticed that the external burner wasn't appearing and so from there I began to troubleshoot the problem and I found that the only way the external burner will work is if the hub is attached to my computer through usb and not firewire.
I really would like to get it to work via firewire because burning 3 dvds at a time on usb 2.0 might be a problem for me due to the transfer limit of 2.0.
So my question is is there a way around this? Do I need another hub or is there any other way to have 8 external burners running from one computer?
    Thanks

Put a second drive inside the Mac Pro, then you need only one external drive.
If you want to use FireWire, get FireWire drives, or move your drives to FireWire enclosures.

  • Daisy chaining external hard drives and a video camera from a single firewire 800 port on my imac

I have only a single firewire 800 port on my imac and want to know if I can daisy chain two external hard drives and my video camera, please? If not is there another solution using USB 2?

Are the external HDs self powered or powered by the FW port?  If they are self powered there should not be a problem. If they are port powered they may put a strain on the port's power output but I'n not positive on that.

  • Does Target Disk Mode work between FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 ports?

Can I mount one as an external volume for the other Mac and vice versa? The one with FireWire 400 port runs on OS X 10.5, and FireWire 800 one has OS X 10.6 installed. If it works, I am thinking of buying an 800-400 adapter.

Can I mount one as an external volume for the other Mac and vice versa?
    Yes.
