Belkin KVM Switch 2 issue

recently bought the new Belkin Switch 2 KVM gizmo.
Hooked it up to a G5 PPC DVI->VGA & G4 PPC(AGP) VGA. Montior is a Samsung Syncmaster 172T (1024x768 @ 60hz), keyboard & mouse are Apple Pro, both wired. Running 10.4.7
Boot up the G5 & it gets through boot up but then crashes - in respect that although login/startup items continue to load, the mouse is unresponsive & the screen defaults to the generic wallpaper & the screen resolution is not as specified in system prefs (ie. lesser/basic res.)Only way out is to hit the power button til it turns itself off.
Boot up the G4 & it works perfectly. Have reversed the switch cables to check them but no change to the G5 crash. Looks to me like there may be an issue with DVI-VGA and the Switch2.
Has anyone experienced this & more importantly figured out how to solve this issue?
TIA, Andy
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The new Apple keyboard is very underpowered. Even if connected directly to the computer mine won't power my Ipod, so i would say it's likely a power issue.

  • Problem with iBook G4 and Belkin KVM switch

I purchased an iBook G4 a few months ago, and then recently got a Belkin KVM switch to share a monitor with my Windows XP computer. The switch is powered over USB (so uses a USB mouse and keyboard). It worked great up until recently. Now, whenever I switch over to the iBook, it shows the OSX desktop, and you can hear the USB devices (mouse and keyboard) "unplug" from the XP box (familiar USB sound on XP). Then, after about 2 or 3 seconds, it goes back to the XP display and re-enables the USB mouse and keyboard in XP. The only thing I can figure is that the KVM switch is not getting any or enough power from the iBook USB to let it know it's there. I should mention that the only thing I did different in between the time it worked and started to not work was plug in an M-Audio Fasttrack USB guitar device to the iBook at the same time. Both the KVM and Fasttrack worked together only once. Now, the KVM won't work, both alone and with the Fasttrack. I have used the Fasttrack before and it worked just fine, but this was the first time I used it with the KVM together.
I have seen a few posts on this general topic, but none that I saw had any possible solutions. Could it be an OSX update that broke this somehow? Thanks.

Well, I managed to figure out the problem. I called Belkin, and they suggested unplugging everything and then plugging it back in. And, wouldn't you know, it worked. I'm not sure why, but I'm not complaining. So, if anyone else runs into this same issue, try this.

  • DVI KVM Switch??

    Hi,
I have a G5 running tiger (soon to be running leopard hopefully) with a DVI cinema display.
I have a PC that I use for testing my work on the Web. I was able to switch back and forth easily with a Belkin KVM switch back when I was using a VGA monitor. But I can't seem to find a KVM switch that works with my current setup.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers!

Would this model work for me?

  • Kvm switch

    sir
we had a belkin kvm switch of the series number with F1DP108A , which worked fine on windows os not OEL , i installed kde desktop in OEL 32 bit the moment it worked fine.
But in 64 bit OEL , even if installed kde desktop it failed with an error message stating that "video mode not supported".So as per the suggestion from
OEL service request, we replaced the belkin kvm switch with ATEN KH1508 model, but the problem remains even if installed KDE also. Regarding the belkin kvm switch, we applied
a number of solution from oracle service but no result. Please help us in this problem.

Check the physical connections. Make sure there are no bend pins on any of the connectors - on all devices attached to the KVM.
If this is for sure not the problem, perhaps you've set your video card to a refresh rate and/or a resolution your monitor can't handle. I don't know the specs for your Belkin KVM or monitor, but setting a refresh rate to 60 Hz and a resolution to 1024x768 should always work.
Check /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Look for Section "Screen" and rearrange the order of the defualt depth Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

  • New Apple Keyboard for Dual G5 with KVM Switcher

    Hi Everyone,
I have a Dual Mac G5 and a Dual Mac G4 with a Belkin KVM Switcher, so they are able to both share one monitor. I am not sure of the model number of the Switcher, but I bought it because it was recommended by Apple. It has worked flawlessly since I installed it over a year ago.
My problem is this. I plugged the new Mac keyboard into the G5, where the old one was. When I did this, the Switcher just kept switching back and forth, on and off, and just was not behaving.
Is there some software out there that I have to install that will enable me to plug in the new Mac keyboard without any problems with the KVM Switcher?
Thank you for reading this. I would sincerely appreciate any help. Best Regards, Luke 77

Just make F5 as your Dashboard...
System Preferences---> Keyboard---> Shortcuts---> Mission Control---> (check mark Show Dashboard)---> Double click the current state (could be F12). When highlighted, hit the actual key "F5".
From then on, you should be able to hit "F5" and it'll show the Dashboard for you.
I believe there are at least two Apple Wireless keyboard out there. The one that I am on right now shows 6 squares on the F4 key. The other has the dial face on the F4 key. This one also has brightness control for the backlighting on the keyboard, or rather the built-in keyboard of a Mac Book (Air and Pro). Which are on the F5 and F6 keys. Why Apple did that, I have no idea.
You could also use a Hot Corner to open the Dashboard. For instance use the upper left for it.
System Preferences---> Mission Control---> Hot Corners (lower left of the window)---> Select the upper left and scroll to Dashboard.
I personally like to have the Dashboard "fly" over my current screen/desktop. So I unchecked "Show Dashboard a Space."

  • KVM Switches

    Hi Gang
I currently have an IOGEAR DVI Mini View 2 Port KVM switch which required the use of a detector, specifically I'm using #2 Geffen DVI Detectors for 2 G5's, and ONE 20" Apple Cinema Display. Was wondering if there's currently a different approach, (a simpler approach), (a less costly approach)?
I'd like to help a friend who has two G5's (both 1.8SP), with the same Video Cards: ATI 9600 Pro, and ONE 20" Apple Cinema Display.
Wasn't sure if the deciding factor were my two DIFFERENT Video Cards, which required the Detectors, or if there was another reason?
BTW, obviously, my PC's do NOT require DETECTORS - all 3 towers recognize the SAME monitor thru a simple Belkin KVM Switch.
    Thanx for your input..

YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST - I LOOK FORWARD TO READING YOUR MESSAGES HERE FROM TIME TO TIME!
Yes I suppose with Ebay's aggravating reputation, these things do happen - it's a far cry from when I joined 12 years ago. Many Sellers have left in disgust.
So perhaps I'll take yer advice Chris and make a decent offer to local for the 7800 GTX512.  I will do this based upon your top rated card, and from my great experiences USING the GT256MB version. The PO here, well I'll have to take a chance ...

  • KVM switch not working on new mac pro

Why won't my Belkin KVM switch work on my new mac pro

  • Belkin Flip KVM Switch and Blue Screen

G5 Dual 2ghz, clean install of Leopard.
I have a dual head video card, attached to the DVI port is a 22" monitor connected via DVI, on the ADC port I have ADC to VGA adaptor which a Belkin "Flip" KVM switch is attached, leading to a 17" monitor.
On booting I get to the point when the Finder should be loading and get a blue screen on both monitors, the monitors both periodically do a fade from black as though the system has just tried to change video resolution. However this loop continues.
If I remove the KVM and have the 17" plugged in, boot up is fine. This set up worked fine with 10.4x.
    Any suggestions.
    Thanks

Zork, have you cracked this problem yet?
I have a similar item - Belkin's Switch2 for Mac mini - and I get the same halting at the blue screen. Belkin UK's 2nd line support failed to replicate this error and replaced my device with the one that they used. It failed as well on my system (which works fine without the Switch2!).
In case it helps, a dig in the logs showed the following fault repeating itself presumably while the screen stayed blue:

  • Belkin KVM makes Acer monitor unrecognisable to OSX

I have bought a belkin KVM. (Belkin Omniview 2-Port KVM Switch with Built-In Cabling, USB)
I am using MacOSX 10.5.8 on a MacBookPro.
My monitor is not recognised through the Belkin KVM. It IS recognised when I directly connect it to my MBP through a VGA to DVI adaptor.
So the belkin KVM loses information on the monitor, it's name and supported resolutions. This means I can't access my favourite resolutions anymore. This makes the KVM unusable.
I need some kind of fix so I can use the KVM.
"Detect displays" fails to recognise the monitor.
Can I FORCE MacOSX to see the monitor as whatever type I want it to be? Is there some software to force the monitor type? I want to manually set the monitor type. But OSX's built in software does not let me. I tried SwitchRezX, which had an "export EDID" feature, but it did not have an "import EDID" feature to let me force OSX to recognise the monitor So that didn't help.

Well, I managed to figure out the problem. I called Belkin, and they suggested unplugging everything and then plugging it back in. And, wouldn't you know, it worked. I'm not sure why, but I'm not complaining. So, if anyone else runs into this same issue, try this.

  • A discussion of DVI KVM Switches

    Hi Gang
I have an APPLE Cinema Display 20" LCD A1081 MONITOR with two Power Mac G5's.
    I researched DVI KVM switches, and tried out an Iogear Model GCS1762;
    http://www.iogear.com/product/GCS1762/
With DVI, (as opposed to VGA), there is a neccessity for a 'hand shake' between computers, as it tries to figure out what to do. The Iogear doesn't connect instantly, consequently producing glitches, lines, video noise for a few seconds before it clears up when toggling back n forth.
Gefen on the other hand, apparently realizing this issue came out with something called a DVI detective; http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=4714
    They also make a (probably better) switch;
    http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=5040
Has anyone had any experience with either of these?
    Thanx
    Mike

I've gone thru several between work (2 offices) and home and after using different models and having them die or exhibit difficulties with new larger monitors, I've been happy with the Belkin KVMs that I've had for the last couple years. But I foresee a possible problem with the wireless part. I think you'd better put out a call for reports on success/foibles using a KVM and wireless mouse/keyboard. What I'm not sure about is how the computer will react to losing contact with wireless and then getting it back again.

  • KVM switchs, any problems with MSI boards???

    Hi Everybody!!
X-Abit fan here, I have a 2 port Belkin DVI KVM switch. I had trouble with Asus and kvm's so I'm asking ahead of time. I built a couple of MSI boxes in the P3 days and had good experience. I'm glad to here Quality is back as a priority at MSI. Congrats on the #1 spot on Tomshardware 965P round up.
Hope the forums here as lively as the Abit one is.
    Thanks for the help??

some KVM switch has incompatibility issue with some boards. What you have is just by luck they both work together!

  • Can anyone recommend a good KVM switch for a PC/Mac pair?

I want to run my Mac and PC off of the same USB keyboard and mouse and use the same monitor. Naturally, to fix this problem I bought the first KVM switch I could find (how different could they be?) which was a Belkin variety. Worked ok right at first, but by day 2 I was having switching issues - the monitor kept switching between the two endlessly, though the USB seemed to switch ok. The Mac refused to sleep, though. I'm taking the Belkin switch back and trying something new.
Has anyone had any success with a KVM switch? If so, what flavor?
    Thanks.

Personally I love my IOGEAR USB KVMP.
I own 2, both of them are 2 port units
Best part of IOGEAR is they come with all cables & power supply.
Worst part is most models dont have Audio support, so every machine needs their own speakers.
The IOGEAR USB KVMP Miniview #GCS102U http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GCS102U that I own has ports in front for USB keyboard & USB mouse, in back are 2 USB (A/B) ports with 2 male 15pin VGA ports to connect the 2 computers, also the main monitor port has female 15pin VGA port to connect the Monitor. Cool part is you can use a DVI-VGA adapter without problems which is nice if you LCD or CRT monitor.
2 other USB ports on the back let you share other devices like Printer and Scanner. I am able share my keyboard, trackball, monitor and printer with my newer MDD Dual G4 and an Intel Celeron 2GHz PC I have that runs Linux.
My other KVMP drives 2 other older Macs, a BWG3 and a USB upgraded PM7600.
The front has a button that you push there is less than 2 second delay for monitor and no software needed.
The USB ports are all USB1.1 if I recall so the style is fairly universal if out of date.
they also have a 4port version which I might get http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GCS634U
Although I have not used one, http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=255941 I love the look of the new Belkin Flip. Apple sells them on the AppleStore for $80 and are touted for PC & Mac mini, although I dont see why i cant be used for any Mac. Its cool feature is it does offer Audio Support too and far as I know it has its cables too. I think it is USB2.0 since its a new product. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/6314001/wo/0I7xL JNdSeJb3Do7Faa1XvHguGA/1.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.0.3
    good luck.

  • Mac mini with KVM switch

I'm thinking of getting a Mac mini, but I need my Windows PC for some apps that aren't available on Mac and some other stuff. I can't afford to get a large monitor for a Mini if I get one, but my current PC has a big flat panel display.I noticed the KVM cable way of moving your stuff (a cale taht lets peripherals like monitors, keyboard and mice be connected to two computers so you don't need a separate one for eache computer), and was wondering if that's a possible way of using both without buying monitors, etc. for the Mini.
Is anyone doing this, and if so, what do you think of using the Mini this way? Does it work well, and what are the pros and cons of doing this?
    Thanks,
    Ilya Smirnov

My experience with my Belkin KVM is also good, with the exception of one thing. I can't switch back to the Mini once I've switched to the PC. I have to unplug the PS2/USB adapter from the Mini and THEN do Scroll Lock-Scroll Lock 2. The KVM then switches, and I can plug back in. Everything works fine after that. It gets cumbersome though if you want to switch seamlessly between the two.
I only use the KVM for the KM part these days since my monitor (Samsung 930b 19" LCD) is able to switch between DVI and VGA by itself. And since I'm using the Windows box mostly for gaming these days, I use the DVI with the PC and the VGA with the Mac. The KVM was able to handle it without any distortion when I ran VGA on both of them. To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a cost-effective DVI KVM switch out there yet. I could be wrong.

  • DVI to VGA via Belkin SOHO Switch Problems

Hi, I've searched and emailed Belkin support and no luck.
I am using DVI out through a DVI -> VGA adapter (tried Apple® branded and non) then through the company supplied Belkin SOHO VGA KVM switch.
My MBP detects the external display fine, but no video is displayed.
Other monitors/projectors without the Belkin switch are fine using the DVI->VGA adaptor. And I've used the DVI straight out for years without a problem.
Belkin's tech support couldn't figure it out and just recommended that I buy a DVI KVM switch. Nice.
    Anyone?
    Thanks in advance!

My MBP detects the external display fine, but no video is displayed.
What kind of display is it?
Other monitors/projectors without the Belkin switch are fine using the DVI->VGA adaptor.
Other monitors? What about the one connected to the Belkin switch? Does it work fine when driven directly without the Belkin switch?

  • I'm running iTunes Radio on a WinXP PC with a KVM USB switch. With the latest iTunes update, iTunes Radio will no longer continue to stream when I switch to my work PC via the KVM switch. Can this be fixed?

I use a WinXP machine as a dedicated Music PC. I also have a separate "newer" PC to do work on. Each machine shares a Monitor, keyboard, and mouse through a KVM USB switch. I like to stream iTunes radio by starting iTunes on a selected station, then 'switch' to my work PC so that the Music PC will stream iTunes like a radio station through my Audio sound system. This used to work fine up until the latest update to iTunes. Now, when the Music PC detects the KVM switching to the other PC (basically a system hardware disconnect detection), iTunes will stop. Can I turn this 'hardward detection' issue off in iTunes?

Check your  i tunes version on the PC.  you need the most recent version.
    Other potentials -
    try a different usb port,
    try a different cable.
