Belnet pacman mirror

Hello,
I have an internet connection of a university that works as follows:
You can download only 4GB per month off the internet with your account. But since Belnet is our backbone and contains only educational things like linux distributions, you may download from belnet without it costing any gigabytes.
My next pacman full system upgrade, is 900MB. I'd like to use belnet to upgrade archlinux to be able to use this 900MB for other things.
But, the belnet archlinux mirror, at http://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/archlinux.o … y/os/i686/, doesn't work for me anymore. If I go to that URL, it keeps loading forever, but does nothing.
Could you try in a browser if that URL works for you?
Can someone of Archlinux fix this, or is it completely up to the Belnet administrators?
If anyone can help, thank you very much!

I have had lots of ups and downs with the belnet mirror as well. A lot of packages are out of date. Even though http://users.archlinux.de/~gerbra/mirrorcheck.html says it is up-to-date (at present anyhow).
And here's a package that seems out of sync in a lot of mirrors : sshfs
Its been updated two days ago (to 2.2-2) :
http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sort … =&limit=50
But pacman still tries to install version 2.2-1 :
:: Retrieving packages from extra...
error: failed retrieving file 'sshfs-2.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from ftp.archlinux.org : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
error: failed retrieving file 'sshfs-2.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from ftp.belnet.be : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
AS you can see it's also out-of-sync on the main mirror...
Another weird thing : the following mirror :
http://mirror.leaseweb.com/software/arc … a/os/i686/
lists the package correctly (2.2-2), but this mirror is not even listed in the Mirror List from the wiki...
PS: is it possible to tell pacman to install a specific version of a package ?

  • Pacman mirror for India

    All the pacman mirrors seems to be slow from my location, chennai in southern India. The only reason I am sticking with ubuntu, is that they have got a mirror 4 kms away from my home in IIT and i get  60K download speed on my 512kbps line. I tried a few of them and none of them includeing the main server give more than 30k. This should'nt be a problem, except that my ISP has a download limit and I can  download for free only for 11pm to 9am, which is usually used for downloading other stuff. So how do I find which server will be fastest for me. I tried to ping the servers and compare, but I soon discovered that the ping really does'nt influence download speed. Often a server with higher ping seems to be faster than some with lower ping.

    i use the apokryph server from the topic of #archlinux.de which is pretty up to date and i get good speed there aswell (about 650k). the downside is, that it doesn't include the community repo
    edit: switched to hosteurope.de too. just as fast, more up to date than apokryph and it has community too /me happy

  • Ftp.belnet.be mirror very slow with updates

    The mirror that is closest to my location, ftp.belnet.be , seems to be very slow with updates for AL.
    XFCE4 was updated to 4.2.3 around nov 10 on archlinux.org.
    11 days later xfce4 4.2.2 is still on belnet , and not replaced by the new version.
    Since it's also a fast and reliable server, i don't mind waiting a few days, but more than a week is TOO long.
    What's the use of a bleeding edge distribution when you can't get updates that have been available for more than a week ?
    For now, i have fallen back on archlinux.org , but will look for another european server.

    In contrast with the name, that server doesn't seem to have ANY arch packages anymore.

  • [SOLVED] pacman mirror problems

    It seems that my preferred mirror (mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca) is down, so I commented it out of /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist. However, pacman still insists on trying to download from this mirror EVERY TIME it tries to install or update a package
    So each package takes about 15 seconds to say:
    error: failed retrieving file 'gcc-4.5.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz' from mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca: Connection timed out
    before trying another mirror.
    Is there an option to make sure pacman is using the mirrors specified in the mirrorlist, or to not use a certain mirror? I can't find anything in the man page or wiki.
    thanks.

    I know this thread is marked solved but I've just run into the same problem and was wondering how you fixed this issue?
    When I run pacman -Syu I get:
    error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca : Connection timed out
    So I guess this is the same problem. It's weird though because I'm still able to search for packages without the connection timing out. I did check the mirrors status and it still seems to be up so I don't think that's an issue.
    Any help would be appreciated, sorry in advance if I've done something wrong by posting in a thread marked solved.
    Shot in the dark but I had a similar problem. The way I fixed it (and I'm still not sure why it worked) but I manually entered my DNS servers into my network manager applet. I don't know if you use Gnome, KDE, or whatever (I use KDE), but that worked for some reason. Maybe you could try it.
    Thanks for the response, yes I'm using Gnome and networkmanager applet 0.8. I'm not too sure what you mean by entering the DNS server in the network manager applet. Are you suggesting that I enter my ip address (the one assigned to me by my ISP) into the BSSID or MAC address field? Those are the only two fields that I see when I select my connection and click edit in the network manager applet, unless I go to the security settings or one of the IPv tabs.
    I was able to update my system after uncommenting the kernel.org mirror, so maybe it is the mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca. Too bad mirrors don't have a blog or something to post news/status updates on it could prove helpful when problems like this occur. Then again that would mean more maintenance for them and I can understand why it might be considered too much work. I guess https://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorStatus works good enough.

  • How to Change pacman Mirrors

    arch works fine, except i use the ftp.archlinux mirror and its throttled, so my download are way slower then im capable.  i followed this from the wiki
    [core]
    # Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/core
    changed it to
    [core]
    ftp://ftp.nethat.com/pub/linux/archlinux/
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/core
    didnt work, tried
    ftp://mirrors.unixheads.org/archlinux http a well
    It wouldnt work, It even hung once so i had to restart.
    So i cant figure out how to use other mirrors besides the default one and have them actally work.  I would like to be able to download faster then 50-80kbps when im capable of mb's down at a time.  I saw this in the wiki
    "Aria2 Mirror Script " but it also says not to use ftp.arch linux with it, so im stuck, its all i can use.  Any options for a newb?
    maybe post a pacman.d if your in america? i dont know what im doing wrong.

    what's up with pacman servers lately ? some mirrors are many weeks behind, others will drop my downloads after a couple seconds, some are just butt slow ..
    it didnt use to be like that ..  i've just spent the last 20 minutes trying to download wine 1.2 (11 megabytes), and after trying about 5 servers and resuming about 12 times (which is unreliable at best since they all seem to have different versions of packages) , i'm still at about 52%..

  • Choosing pacman mirrors

    Does it mean its a CDN and will automatically get the fastest/nearest server?
    Do I choose FTP or HTTP
    In general how many servers should I enable and how do I choose them? When I ping some servers that I think its near, it does not necessarily mean the fastest ping. In Ubuntu it can determine the fastest server to use. Is there something like that in Arch?

    Also, I think my network is set up correctly as I can ping google.com
    I am using a wired connection with dhcp.
    Do I need to edit the resolv.conf, and the hosts files, I am not sure what needs to go in these files.
    I installed from the 2008.06 core i686 iso.
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks again for all your help Xyne,
    I am trying the install from within Ubuntu, and it isn't looking good.
    I needed to follow http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … ting_Linux instead of the link you posted because of pacman.static being removed or something.
    Anyway, it is still timing out
    I don't know what to do, I don't think it can me my connection, as it seems to be working well for everything else.
    Also, I read this in the wiki guide, and was curious, I'm not using x86_64.
    You may want to manually resolve DNS in the /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist, because pacman-static for i686 may not be able to get address information on x86_64 systems.

  • Pacman mirrorlist

    Hi,
    I've a problem with pacman, it failed retrieving file from any mirror... first I had ftp://archlinux.puzzle.ch but once it doesn't work anymore, so I tried other mirrors in the mirrorlist sorted with rankmirrors. But with any mirror I've tested I received "error:failed retrieving file ''from core..... error:failed retrieving any db" when I try pacman -Syu or any pacman -S ...
    What should I try to do?
    Thanks for your help,
    Sylvain

    Did you do
    pacman -Syy
    after you changed mirrors? As explained in the Beginner's Guide, this is necessary after changing mirrors in order for pacman to synch all databases.
    Additionally, your mirrorlist looks strange. My mirrors look as follows:
    Server = ftp://ftp.wh-stuttgart.net/archlinux/$repo/os/i686
    Server = ftp://mirror.leaseweb.com/archlinux/$repo/os/i686
    Server = ftp://ftp-stud.hs-esslingen.de/pub/Mirr … po/os/i686
    Server = ftp://ftp.surfnet.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr … po/os/i686
    Server = ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/metalab/distribu … po/os/i686
    Server = ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/archlinux/$repo/os/i686
    Server = ftp://ftp.belnet.be/packages/archlinux/$repo/os/i686
    Server = ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributio … po/os/i686
    Server = ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/$repo/os/i686
    The difference is, that you don't have the architecture in your paths (i686).
