Benchmark program for OSX?

G'day,
Just recently got iMac 24" for mum and dad, I would like to run benchmark tests on intel iMac, intel mini mac, this G4 933mhz, and PC (Intel dual duo E4400 2ghz running OSX86 on it) What program would it be called to do benchmark tests?
Norton used to have one called System Info which was great for non-osx. - What is it now?
Thanks
Tristan

Do I need to buy new programs for osx lion?

First you need to make sure you have a supported machine, and all the current updates (Core 2 Duo, i3/5/7 and 10.6.8.)
If you are using Microsoft Office 2004/8, then you will need to buy Office 2011. If you are using older versions of Adobe Photoshop before CS3 that are PPC only, then you will need to buy a newer Adobe CS.
If you are running iWork 08, it will work, but there will be no support for full screen unless you have 09 version. If you use Apple software like Final Cut or Logic Studio, you will also need the latest versions to use full screen support.
Basically, if you have any software installed that is more than 2 years old, you need to check if it is Intel, PPC or Universal. Because anthing that is listed as PPC will not work at all. And most Apple apps older than 2 years do not have any support for the new Full Screen or Versions features.
If you want to see if you have any PPC apps that are not supported at all, simply click the Apple icon at the top, click about this Mac, then click more info. System Profiler will open, on the left side click on "Applications" and you will see a list of every installed app. The far right column will tell you KIND, Intel, Universal or PPC. Anything in the list that says PPC will not work after installing Lion.

  • Does anyone know of a good genealogy program for OSX?

Most of the offerings in the app store whilst being relatively cheap really do not come anywhere near the quality of software such as Family Historian or even Family Tree Maker.  The graphics are at best "jazzy" and quite often hard to understand.  Quite often they concentrate on pretty pictures which most genealogists don't need - they need a good database! Gramps is the only package that comes up to my expectations and runs on practically everything except OSX - and it's free!
Any suggestions would be most welcome as I continue to use a PC and windows for my genealogy pursuits.

    Reunion
Not cheap, but extremely robust. The company has been producing and supporting it for as long as Macs have been in existence.
If you ever need support (you probably won't) don't be surprised if Frank Leister picks up the phone himself.

  • Image resizer - power toy's style program for osx ?

I hope this is the correct forum. I am new to the mac way of life and I have just began to explore my new (and first) mac (17" G4 powerbook).
I have Adobe elements that came with my Canon 300D, so I do have an image resizer, however I was hoping someone had information to a resize program that worked similar to the Microsoft power toys. Simply right click the image and choose the size you wish it to be.
If this exists, please point me in the right direction
    Thanks a million!

  • Fontek character chooser FOR OSX?

does anyone know if there are any programs for OSX that do the same types of things as the lovely OS9 FONTEK CHARACTER CHOOSER?
I have suitcase fusion but it does not show ALL the characters available for each character set in a preview window .. which is what I'm really looking for.
The international panel doesn't use all the fonts that I have functioning, only the ones the system is using (I think, because there are only four or five fonts to choose from in the drop down menu in the keyboard)
    thoughts? ~KT

Things have changed since OS 9 and you can no longer normally use the keyboard to enter the kinds of things you want. In the Unicode system used by OS X, special characters are no longer mapped to Latin codepoints that the keyboard reaches, but to their own standardized codepoints beyond this, for which there are no keystrokes. You need to use the Character Palette, either double-clicking or the Insert Button at the bottom right, to input such characters. You can use the Glyph mode of Character Palette to see all the glyphs in a font and try to input them. Some apps may work with older fonts that replace Latin with symbols, but some will not.
Have you found and looked at Character Palette yet? This is the tool you need to use, not Keyboard Viewer.

  • Enable Bootcamp to install from usb for OSX 10.9**WORKS**

So basically, I have trying to install windows on my mbp using a usb drive. However bootcamp wont allow me to do so since I have a optical drive on the laptop. I have been searching for a long time and eventually came across this solution and I would like to share this so u guys dont have to google all over the place again .
The solutions given before by changing info.plist is correct except that now Bootcamp crashes everytime you change it in OSX 10.9.
    Full solution:
    1. Add your Boot Rom Version(from system info) under DARequiredROMVersions.
    2. Add Model Identifier(from system info) under PreUSBBootSupportedModels
    3. Delete "Pre" from "PreUSBBootSupportedModels", so you have "USBBootSupportedModels"
The first 3 steps are same as before and if its not clear you can easily google solutions with screenshots.
The next step is only for OSX 10.9, as it employs some kind of code signature to prevent you from changing info.plist and cause bootcamp to crash.
    4. Open your terminal, use the following command
    sudo codesign -fs - /Applications/Utilities/Boot\ Camp\ Assistant.app
Sudo means using administrator privilege and u need to enter your mac password. And the command resigns the bootcamp application so that it runs with the new info.plist file and not crash.
    5. Continue on with your installation....
    Cheers.
P.S. back up info.plist before u change anything.

do you have multiple partitions on your USB stick? And what partition table does it use?
I have two windows installers. One is on a 4GB single partition fat32 formatted stick, and one is on a 5GB partitions of a 500GB USB HDD. On the USB HDD I have windows as second partition. First is OSX installer. I noticed that I can boot in BIOS mode with the 4GB USB stick, but not with the 500GB USB HDD.
So try a windows formatted USB stick with a single partition. See if that works.
Be carefull with google.. In the last few days I have been researching some bootcamp related things and there is waaaay more wrong information of people that tell others what they 'heard' than that there is right information of those who know how stuff works.
I am of the 2nd category btw. I only tell you what I know for sure. If an '06 macbook with ODD can boot of of USB into BIOS mode, then so should you.
Edit: The reason the Windows EFI installers says it found an MBR partition only is because by default the disk is in GPT mode with a 'protected' mbr so that non-gpt aware programs wont look and scream "free space! ".
In order for Bootcamp to install in legacy BIOS mode it converts this 'protective' MBR into a "hybrid" MBR. If you download the open source app "Gdisk", install it, and type "sudo gdisk /dev/disk0" in terminal you will see there is either a protective or hybrid MBR on the disk.
Formatting a disk to fat32 with any OSX tool (BC Utility or disk utility) will convert the protective MBR to Hybrid MBR.
Gdisk allows you to reset this to a protective MBR as described here: http://superuser.com/questions/508026/windows-detects-gpt-disk-as-mbr-in-efi-boo t
Hybrid MBR: Full Bootcamp compatibility. OSX knows whats up and decides everything. Windows installs in legacy BIOS mode on an MBR type disk.
Protective MBR: Bootcamp utility and OSX are not used since they would convert the disk to a hybrid MBR. This mode is compatible with booting in EFI mode. EFI compatible Windows versions (7 partially, 8 completely) will live alongside OS X, for the most without problems. And will install on a GPT type disk.
Hope to have helped you with this. Took me three full days of non-stop reading to figure this out.

Edit 2: Make damned sure you have a backup of your system. Messing around with partition types and tables shouldnt hurt when you know what you're doing. But since I know this for three days, and you apparently havent found this yet, I think it's safe to say both of us aren't yet 100% sure of what we're doing .

  • What is the FASTEST Internet Browser for OSX? (2014 Edition)

What is the FASTEST Internet Browser for OSX? (2014 Edition)
I'm a tech junkie, I love everything about technology.. especially FAST and EFFICIENT technology..
I am currently using Google Chrome, and have nothing bad so say about it.. I like that I can "sign in" to Google Chrome pretty much anywhere (including my iPhone 5s), and instantly have access to all of my Bookmarks and Bookmark folders..
I have seen a bunch of benchmark tests testing a bunch of available internet browsers on OSX.. however, the results seem a bit inconclusive and varying, and some that even support the notion that Safari is now FASTER than Google Chrome.. I'm not sure whether or not to believe it, and I don't really have the time/energy to conduct a series of tests on my own..
What do you guys think? Is Google Chrome still considered the "fastest" when it comes to browsing/downloading?

Has anyone used or have any opinions about Lightning?  I found some positive reviews around, and granted they all mention it's unrefined, they all seem to think it is the fastest.  Great as that may be, before I fork out the $2 I would like to get some more info regarding privacy and security.

  • What script to find associated program for a file type?

    Hi friends,
I am looking for OSX commands that can do the following:
    - return name of associated program for a particular file type, i.e "QuickTime' for .mov
    - return path of the executable file of the program name returned above.
I hope to get some ideas/suggestions from you.
Thanks and have a nice day!

Microsoft has a recover pst program that you can get from their

  • Converting Windows programs for Mac?

I am considering purchasing a Mac, but have many expensive programs for Windows. I do not want to install Windows on my Mac. Is there a way to convert my Windows-compatible programs for my new mac computer?

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
while it is not possible to simply 'covert' a Windows program so that it runs in Mac OSX, you might wanna have a look at Crossover for Mac http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/ which lets you run certain Windows programs on a Mac without the need to install Windows.
Depending on what Windows programs you use this approach is the 'least invasive way'

  • ITunes could not be opened-not enough memory: "3ivx D4 4.5.1 for OSX" FIXED

    iTunes: 6.04 (3)
    QT: 7.0.4
    OSX: 10.4.6
After reading through other posts regarding this message, "The iTunes application could not be opened. There is not enough memory available." and trying what everyone else had tried (rebooting, repair permissions, delete iTunes prefs, re-install, change theme, create new user) my iTunes still told me I did not have enough RAM. I have 2GB installed and more than 16GB free on the hard drive. There were no problems found when using disk utility to verify the hd.
Then I remembered that I was trying to watch a movie yesterday in quicktime and the audio wouldn't play. I searched and found a couple codecs to try; msmpeg41, msmpgv2 and '3ivx D4 4.5.1 for OSX.' (none of which allowed me to hear the AC3 audio track. Had to convert to divx/mp3 with ffmpegx) After removing/replacing the new codecs one by one while trying iTunes, I narrowed it down to the 3ivx D4 4.5.1 for OSX codec. When it is in my /Library/Quicktime folder, iTunes tells me I don't have enough memory and quits. When I pull it out, all is fine. So even if you didn't install the codec that gave me problems, other QT codecs could potentially stop iTunes from opening.
    Hope this helps someone.

It's a unified GUI program http://gui.interacto.net/ and some people (including me) have had this error message when using it with iTunes 7 Their latest version 1.3.1 seems to overcome this, but if you are not using it ........!
