Benchmark Results for CS4, attn. Bill Gehrke

Bill (and others interested),
I have now tweaked my system a bit and done some simple benchmarking to see if I did it right. There is not yet a PPBM+ benchmark available to see how this system fares in comparison to others, but if you make it available for CS4, Bill, I will submit the data.
Anyway, here are the results for the time being:
b PassMark 7.0: 4338,1 (only second place due to Vista 64, which adds a 5-10% performance penalty in comparison to XP-32).
b Cinebench R10: 5670 single CPU / 22338 multi CPU / 5154 OpenGL.
b HDTach 3.0.4 long (32 MB): Single disk burst 233 / Avg 99, 2 disk raid0 burst 4275 / Avg 177, 8 disk raid30 burst 1045 / Avg 671.
This is a budget system with i7-920 @ 4.0 GHz, 12 GB RAM, ATI 4870 video, 150 GB boot Velociraptor, 2 TB Raid0 for pagefile/scratch, 2 x single disk 1 TB for audio, stock footage and export, and 8 TB Raid30 for media (Areca-ARC 1680iX-12 with 2 GB cache and BBM) plus 2 BR burners.
Bill, how are you coming along on the PPBM+ CS4 version?

Agreed up to a point. The raid controller, cache memory and BBM, which I would have wanted for any system, be it low budget, mid range or high budget, takes out an enormous heap. I could have gotten four i7 CPU's for that. If you add the disks as well, yes, it does get expensive. However, that investment may well outlive several generations of mobo's and CPU's and gives me your much coveted RAID30 array of effectively 6 TB (8 TB raw) and some more.
In the old days, people used to say that the system you wanted is around $ 5K. Nowadays when you want top-of-the-bill $ 5K is not enough; that is IMO a high budget system. A low budget system IMO at least for NLE is somewhere around $ 1-2K and medium is around the $ 2-4K bracket and anything higher than that is top material. That leaves my system in the medium bracket, nice, but not top-of-the-bill.

    Michael,
I actually need some data to analyze. Please advise if BEA has anything like that.

  • Problem Creating MR Results for MR and Billing Order after Reversal

    Hi Experts,
After Creating Meter Reading Order and Results i have done Reversal of Meter Reading and when i again tried to create Meter reading Results for same MRU i am unable to create Meter Reading Results. I was able to create MR Order, but not Results. Please advise me how can i create MR Results again and why i am unable to create the same.
    Thanks,
    Kushal

    Hi Kushal,
Looks like you have configured independent validations - 05, 06 0r 07 for your validation class at SAP Utilities --> Device Management --> Meter Reading --> Validations --> Allocate Independent Validations to Validation Classes.
If you have maintained independent validations - 05, 06, or 07, then you need to maintain tolerance limits at  SAP Utilities --> Device Management --> Meter Reading --> Validations --> Define Tolerance Limits for Validation Classes.
This tolerance limit config is missing. Either you maintain tolerance limit or remove independent validations - 05, 06 or 07 from your validation class.
Hope this will resolve your issue.

    Avinash

  • Anyone have Benchmark results for an older MBP?

    I am thinking about ditching my 17" MBP ( 2.13 - 2GB - 120GB) for a newer model.
I am thinking about a fully tweaked 13" MBP (8GB, SSD, etc) or a built MBA.
How does the older models compare to the newer ones? Is there a score that can tell the difference, or is it just based on perception at this point?

  • LiveCycle 8.2 benchmarking results?

    1. Are there any benchmarking results for Livecycle 8.2 on Microsoft Windows Server(s)?
In particular for PDF Generation operations.
    2. Assembler Service Documentaion  states:
The Assembler service can assemble documents from one or more source documents. It supports several options for specifying source documents. Beginning with LiveCycle ES 8.2, the non-PDF documents can used as PDF source documents. Assembler service automatically converts such documents to PDF documents. The Assembler service performs the conversion by using the Generate PDF service. The PDFGenerationSettings element specifies conversion parameters.
Q2) What fraction of time is spent in conversion and merging, respectively?
Q3) What is an optimum workload for the assembler operation that does convert+merge?
Q4) What are the limits for LiveCycle 8.2 in terms of:
              - max number of docs that can be converted and merged at one time
              - max total size of docs to be converted and merged at one time

  • Benchmark Results BEA/JBOSS for Asynchronous Apps

    Hi people,
here are results for the messaging benchmarks, for BEA and JBoss.
First, a little description of the scenario.
We decided for this simple scenario to benchmark :
    PostingClient posts to Topic1.
MDB1 (a message driven EJB) is listening on topic1, gets the message, puts
its time of receipt in the message, and sends it to topic2.
MDB2 (a message driven EJB) is listening on topic2, gets the message, puts
its time of receipt in the message, and sends it to topic3.
MDB3 (a message driven EJB) is listening on topic2, gets the message, puts
its time of receipt in the message, and sends it to topic4.
MDB4 (a message driven EJB) is listening on topic2, gets the message, puts
its time of receipt in the message, and sends it to topic1.
and when the message is posted to topic1, MDB1 regets the message.
There is another listener on topic1 --> MonitoringClient.
MonitoringClient gets the messages arriving there, and reports the times the
message took between the 4 MDBs.
Summary : the messages sent into the EJB Server remain in there, and make
loops from MDB1 to MDB4 and back again, endlessly.
Hardware : Pentium II, 400 Mhz, 256 Megs of RAM.
    OS : Windows NT4
    VM : Sun 1.3
    Benchmark Testing Series :
    Weblogic Benchmarks:
    VM : 64MB heapsize.
    Configurations :
    1) max-beans-in-free-pool : 50 initial-beans-in-free-pool : 6 (in the
entries in weblogic-ejb-jar.xml, for each of the 4 message beans)
    2) max-beans-in-free-pool : 500 initial-beans-in-free-pool : 62
    3) max-beans-in-free-pool : 2000 initial-beans-in-free-pool : 250
for each configuration we tested (with 1 KB messagesize):
50 msgs, 500 msgs, 5000msgs, and infinite (until server crash - maximum time
    waiting for crash 30 minutess)
    On JBoss :
    VM: 64MB heapsize.
    Configurations:
    (in jboss.xml)
    1) container-invoker : maximumsize 50,maxmessages 1 - container-pool:
    maximumsize 50 minimumsize 6
    2) container-invoker : maximumsize 500,maxmessages 1 - container-pool:
    maximumsize 500 minimumsize 62
    3) the maximum jboss could handle even with 128mb ram for the heapsize of
    the VM was :
    container-invoker : maximumsize 500,maxmessages 1 - container-pool:
    maximumsize 500 minimumsize 100
for each configuration we tested (with 1 KB messagesize):
50 msgs, 500 msgs, 5000msgs, and infinite (until server crash - maximum time
    waiting for crash 30 minutes)
    Results for Weblogic :
this server is very fast and stable. With 5000 Messages, we had a crash at
configuration 1, at 1800 Messages sent.
With configuration 2, it crashed at 3300, and with configuration 3 we had a
crash as early as with 500 messages - but that was due to the low heapsize
    of the VM.
When we raised the heapsize to 128Megs, the server ran good with 10000
    messages.
Sending times : we mesaured the times needed for a message to be sent
between to consecutive MDBs - for weblogic it was all around 0,1 secs.
At 10000 messages, average sending time was 1,4 seconds.
For 5000 messages, even with config 3, we had 0,8 seconds.
All other results were very acceptable, average times of 0.01 to 0.2.
If you need any more details, contact me.
    JBoss :
    config 3,2 : 3 seconds average with 50 messages.
Well, to be very honest : perhaps I m doing something fundamentally wrong,
and I dont know exactly what strategy JBoss is pursuing in its kind of
message delivery, but JBoss crashed at every config with 500 messages.
Average sending times at 50 messages were 3 seconds, regardless of the
configuration used, the parameters showed little or no effect.
I know that these parameters should tune throughput, I know, and I know that
with 4 topics and 4 MDBs, we are not simulating a true asynchrnously
designed application, meaning : with asynchronous components only.
But regardless of the throughput, no one wants to wait 12 seconds for a
    response.
Even with 30 messages in the system, the average was 2 seconds, meaning 8
seconds in total to wait for a response : and this with only 4 asynchronous
    components.
At 10 messages, we got average times of 0,7 seconds - meaning a response
time of 3 seconds in total, which could be acceptable.
It is also strange that weblogic showed significant CPU usage when
increasing the JMS load, while JBoss stayed very happy with around 10%, not
caring about any optimization in speed, it seems.
Have we forgotten any parameters to SPEED up sending times, message
delivery, or MDB invocation for JBoss ?
    I am really wondering.
    For precise details, contact me.

  • How to Package Photoshop Extension for cs4/cs5 with manifest.xml

    Hello,
tl;dr: How can I package my extension for both cs4 and cs5 in a way that respects the extension's window geometry?
I have a panel that specifies window geometry in it's manifest.xml. When the panel is installed into Photoshop's panels/ folder, the geometry gets ignored, so I'm trying to package the panel as an extension to be installed via the Extension Manager. I have run into different problems for each CS version. I've read quite a few pdfs about the Extension Manager, UCF command line packaging, etc, and have not been able to find a solution that works for both platforms.
    My understaning
My trial and error research has lead me to understand that the extension's files must eventually end up in the (mac) /Library/Application Support/Adobe/<CSversion>ServiceManager/extensions/ directory. In CS5, if the extension's folder contains a manifest.xml file (ex: /extensions/GuideGuide/CSXS/manifest.xml) that specifies window geometry, Photoshop will respect that window geometry when the panel opens. However, in CS4, this is not enough. From my tests, Photoshop CS4 doesn't seem to do anything with the manifest.xml file. Instead, I had to modify /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CS4ServiceManager/ServiceManifest.xml and add my extension to it's contents. Once I did this, Photoshop CS4 launches my panel and respects it's window geometry.
The problem with this is that it's a manual installation. I can't ask my users to dig around in their system files to install my panel. In addition, since it's unsigned using this method, it won't work if they're not flagged for debugging. I've started exploring using the Extension Manager, but I have run into problems that I cannot find ansers in the few pdfs about packaging that I've been able to find.
    CS5 Problems
If I use the UCF command line tool, I can package and sign my file. It installs fine and does what I want. However, using this method, I haven't been able to find a way to specify the author and description that shows up in the Extension Manager.
    CS4 Problems
The UCF command line tool doesn't appear to make packages that can be installed by CS4, and I haven't been able to find one that is compatable. I've had to result to using the Extension Manager to package my extension based on a .mxi file. The problem I have here is that installing files this way limits me to putting them in the /panels directory, which then causes the panel to ignore the indow geometry. Is there a way with an .mxi file to install in the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/<CSversion>ServiceManager/extensions/ directory and modify the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CS4ServiceManager/ServiceManifest.xml file?
There must be, because Kuler and other extensions are installed there.
Thank you SO much for any help you might provide. I've spent weeks trying to get this to work and have run into nothing but dead ends and wild goose chases.

Your extension is a CSXS extension. For CSXS extension it's introduced in Extension Manager 2.1. (You can download Extension manager 2.1 from http://www.adobe.com/exchange/em_download/em20_download.html)
In Extension Manager CS2.1 only MXP package is supported. In Extension Manager CS5 CSXS extension must be packaged by ZXP format. So you have to generate two packages for CS4(mxp) and CS5(zxp)
For CS5, you can use ucf.jar to generate the zxp package.
For CS4, you have to create an MXI file and package it by Extension Manager 2.1 to mxp package. Here is a sample CSXS mxi file:
    <macromedia-extension
               name="CSXS_TEST_EXTENSION"

  • PI 7.1 Benchmark results

    Hi,
now that PI 7.1 GA is getting nearer it would be interesting to see some real life benchmark results around performance when compared to PI 7.0 or XI 3.0.
Has anyone had the opportunity to run any as of yet or planning to do so? Would be very interested to see where and to what extent the much promoted improvements have increased the performance and be able to put these numbers in front of customers who are currently struggling with performance related issues on previous versions or who are not yet committed to PI due to uncertainty regarding the performance.
I've tried to search in the SDN for PI 7.1 benchmark results, but if such benchmarking exists I didn't manage to find it (if you have a link, please post it as a reply).
    Cheers

  • Which NVIDIA graphics card for CS4 & CS5.5 Premiere?

I just upgraded to CS5.5 Production Premium but I'm still using XP 32bit. That means I had to load the CS4 version of Premiere and After Effects. Sooner or later I'll upgrade to 64bit Win but in the mean time which graphics card will give me the best bang for the buck and still be useful for CS5.5 later? Money isn't an issue, I just don't want to pay for something and not benefit from it. What's worse is Adobe doesn't even list cards newer than the 8800 and Quadro FX for CS4! Weren't GTX cards available before CS5 came out? Do I need to update a file in CS4 apps to make them accept cards for GPU processing?
Adobe and NVIDIA keep pushing the Quadro cards but when you look at the benchmarks it looks like the GTX cards do just as well. I will use the system for gaming sometimes so DX11 is a must. I have a watercooled i7 920 OC @ 4.0GHz and very stable, temps never go above 60C under full load. I have 6GB RAM and use a memory handler to access the RAM over what XP can use, and use it for virtual mem and caches etc. But my current graphics card is a slightly OC'd 9800GT w/512MB. My system doesn't like to scrub video that isn't rendered unless it's at lower resolutions and obviously I'd like rendering to be as fast as possible.
    Looking around I see:
    GTX560-TI @ $240
    GTX570 @ $300
    GTX480 @ $300
    GTX570 @ $300
    GTX580 @ $460
    Quadro 4000 @ $550
    Quadro 5000 @ $1200
So what's the secret? Where's the sweet spot?
    TIA

    JEShort01 wrote:
The "secret" to MPE bliss is to get the video card AND Win7 64bit AND load your CS5.5. I really don't think that the video card would help much running CS4 on 32bit. Regarding which card, I'd say the sweet spot since you want to game and use CS5.5 would be to go with a GTX 480 with two or three fans (single fan reference design is too LOUD). Also, if you are not going to Win7 right away, delay your purchase and the next GEN of NVidia will be closer or out and you may either want one of the new smaller die-size cards or you could benefit form lower prices on what's available today.
    Jim
So you're saying on Win32 and CS4 Pr, Ae, AME, the graphics card doesn't matter at all? That I won't see any improvement over my 512MB 9800GT?
If I was to narrow it down even farther, the most important aspect would be in the "preview" performance. I can always render when I'm not using the system but sometimes the preview windows hang while working on a project. The problem worsens as the resolution increases or as the project gets more complicated. I had the same problem with PP1.5 which is why I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to see if a newer version would help.
Cooling isn't an issue as long as a water block is available for my next card. I've read the 570 & 580 may be the same reference layout and use the same coolers, I'm still looking into that. I know I can liquid cool the 480, 560TI, 580. I have no idea about the Quadro's, I've never seen a block for those.
I'd like to go to Win64 but other software etc is keeping me from getting there soon. I'm looking into dual booting but have read about lots of problems with folder/file sharing issues when going from XP to Win7. I keep all files/projects on a seperate drive and some are shared over a network. If MS hasn't solved the sharing issues I'm forced to stick with XP. I have too many files that need read/write access and Win7 is stated to set all shares to read only. I'm still researching if it's been resolved.
So it's important to know if anything will help CS4 because as stated above, it'll make more sence to wait for the next gen cards for use in CS5.5.
The bottom line is, I built this system from the ground up just a few years ago before Win64 was so popular. I used the very best components (the 9800GT is actually the lowest componet I bought because gaming wasn't that important at the time). I'm running steady overclocked @ 4.0 and boot from an SSD drive. The data drives are 7200RPM and I bought the fastest RAM I could at the time. Obviously people were editing happily a few years ago on equipment inferior to mine. What's the catch? What am I missing to run smoothly on Win32? I'm assuming it's the graphics card because it's the only place I skimped. Maybe I have a software conflict keeping any version of Pr from working smoothly.
Being 3 gens behind, and mediocre at that, I thought the card might be a good place to start.

I suspect in 2010, using multi-threading, Grand Central multi-cores, and even OpenCL GPU assist will help differentiate products. Those productivity apps (or utilities and games) that do support any or all new functionality will become more desirable than those that do not. This is clearly the future-proofing advantage that people see in buying the 2.7 GHz and 2.8 GHz quad core machines now; they may not be faster today than 3 GHz or 3.3 GHz Core 2 Duo in some things, but tomorrow is another story. Will be nice when Apple's Pro Apps such as Final Cut or even Aperture and Adobe CS's flagship products like Photoshop are tuned for these quad processor configurations. With six-core desktop processors on the horizon, even more pressure on vendors to do it right.

  • Documenation for CS4

    Hi all,
After a very long absence from this group, I would like to hear advice about purchasing documentation for InDesign CS4. (Windows shop--Windows XP)
After a multiple-year wait, our team finally got upgraded from CS2 to CS4. Over a year ago, anticipating we would get CS3, I bought David Blatner's "Real World InDesign CS3." I think very highly of Blatner.
Can you tell me if there are enough differences between InDesign CS3 and CS4 to warrant my buying (my company does not buy support for us) Blatner's same book for InDesign CS4?
Also, do any of you prefer another documentation source?
    Thanks very much.
    Lizbeth

I think the Real World InDesign book is a fantastic resource, although Sandee Cohen's Visual QuickStart Guide is probably better for beginners, as Peter suggested. However, if you don't want to buy any new books for CS4, you'll probably be fine using a combination of your Real World CS3 book, the Help system, and Google.com.
There are several new features in CS4, and some features -- such as Preflight and Hyperlinks -- have changed quite a bit, so you'll want to become familiar with those changes to avoid getting "bad" advice from your CS3 book. You can check out the "What's new" help topic to get an overview:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/WSFE4C4DDD-967A-4cf0-845F-AB2B86FCC809a.html
By the way, I'm the guy who writes the Help topics for InDesign. The web version of Help includes links to videos, user comments, and links to related blog entries, book excerpts, and forum threads. And, when you search in web Help, you can include some of the best community sites in your search results -- essentially a customized Google.com search.

Billing or simulation cannot be processed because there are not enough meter reading results. In this case, a meter reading result is missing that marks the end of the period to be billed or simulated.
Can anyone guide me through this? since i am very new to functional process of ISU Billing.
    Help is much appreciated.

    Hi Astrid,
Here is what i have done,
    1) From an exisiting valid contract, i have done a full removal of device 988100000049413 and installed a new device TEST_GP3.
    2) Created MR Order using EL28, done a estimate and saved it.
    3) When i check in Manual monitoring the status shows as Billable.
    4) When i do a EASIBI with date taken as the MR date it throws the error.
I have also checked the implausible readings using the transaction provided, but there are no records for it.
    Thanks again.

  • Benchmark Figures for Mobile Service Database

    Dear SDN Community
We want to implement CRM Mobile Service and are looking for benchmark figures for the database size to support the database vendor decision.
We intend to replicate business partners and contacts by postal code, all products, service orders, price conditions, service confirmations, and enable van stock mgmt.
I know this is only high level - but we are looking for benchmark figures how to calculate the to be expected database size on the Client.
Every rough estimate is highly appreciated! Benchmark figures would be perfect!
    Thanks very much
    Christian

    Hi,
we had the same request in an earlier MSV project but we couldn't get any (official) estimation tool from SAP product development which allows us to decide whether MSDB (resp. MSSQL Express Edition) is sufficient or not.
Anyway such a statement would be very risky because there are hundreds of parameters which could have an impact on the DB size. E.g. a single 5 MB attachment of a service order equates to thousands of BP or products (including conditions).
I would suggest to use the MSSQL 2005 Standard Edition in the Dev and QA environment and simulate the effective data volume with reasonable test data there.
Also you should try to minimize the data volume (and transfer) by using suitable filter criteria (especially for the product master incl. conditions). Service orders and confirmations can be revoked from the Mobile clients after they are closed by using according status filters. BP can be replicated by using an interlinkage order -> BP in order to optimize the BP amount on the laptops. The attachment maximum size can be defined in customizing.
Also note that running the Mobile sites in unicode mode could cost you up to 100 % more DB space.
Finally there are some important notes which refer to tools for DB administration (defragmentation, reorganization).
I suppose you will have a proper result concerning the needed DB size on the laptops after you have done these configuration steps and observations in the QA enviroment.
    Regards,
    Wolfhard
