Benefit of using iChat test buddies

My sister and I tried to unsuccessfuly to get iChat working for the first time and after reading through all the router, port, ISP issues that can affect iChat, it just makes your head hurt!
I sent my sis a list of initial things to try on her end, first being to add a iChat test user, in this case, Apple3utest01, and see if she can connect to it.
My question is, if you are able to successfully connect and see video and hear audio from a test buddy, does that mean that all of your iChat related settings are 100% a-ok and you don't have to change anything?
I'm running iChat v. 2 and am able to connect to the Apple3utest01 buddy and this was before I changed my quicktime bandwidth setting and did all the port-forwarding from my modem/router. And I did have my vonage hardwired to my modem/router. So, I'm just unsure of how helpful it is to even try a test buddy?

Hi emmarin,
It is really a first point.
From what we can tell the appleu3test accounts do not appear to be on a NAT server/modem/router of any sort.
This will eliminate many NAT related problems when one end is doing NAT. It tends to be when both ends are doing NAT that problems can show up more.
They also have the advantage of being on fast connection and they are set to Auto-Respond which again cuts down the connection time which in turn improves the chance of connection.
Both Defcom and I run Little Snitch which puts pop up windows of the IP and Ports for us to read.
This can add to the delay in making the connection and cause it to fail.
If you have slow connections at both ends this can be a problem for your success.
So to answer the question is it a signal that everything is A-OK then no it isn't.
However it is a marker on the way.
If you can't get the Text accounts then more work needs to be done first.
Then of course we have Table 2 for more real world testing
http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.html
It is a bit like a racing car.
It started, so can it get out of the Pit lane and set a Provisional lap time ?
Table two allows you to set lap times with other cars on the circuit (in all senses of the phrase)

After years of owning all things Mac, I am finally trying to use iChat, and can't get it to work. I am using gmail, and I see my buddy (no camera icon next to her name), but all I can do is send a message--the video and audio chat icons are gray, as is inviting to a video chat under Buddies. My buddy has the same problem as I.  We are able to do video chat through gmail, but I had hoped to use iChat.  I am using OS 10.6.8, iChat v. 5.0.3.  What am I missing?

    HI,
iChat will Video chat to another iChat in a Jabber Buddy List (Google run a Jabber server for GoogleTalk)
However it will not Video to the Web Page login to iGoogle or the Web Mail Page login.  (where people can Google Chat as it were in a  Web Browser).
Nor does it video to the Google Talk Stand alone app for PCs or any other Jabber apps on any platform.
iChat uses a connection Process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which is also used by other VoIP devices.
Jabber/XMPP invited the Jingle Protocol for Jabber Applications.
Google have included this in their Standalone app and the Plug-in for Web Browsers on both PCs and Mac (you can get this as a Standalone Plug-in or as part of Chrome)
More on this here  This article has been changed several time in the recent months.  It now claims a greater involvement by Google in writing the Jingle Library (Although now Google's version does not work with the others)
This tends to mean that using the web Login to Google to Chat also cannot video chat to other Jabber apps that are using Jingle.
If your Buddy is using iChat then check the Video Menu has two items to Enable Camera/Video chat and Microphone/Audio chats are ticked.
In the View Menu the Show Status Items should be ticked (Selecting them toggles the tick and the function On or Off)
It could be Internet speed but at this stage I would doubt this at this stage.

  • How to use ichat??

I have had my mac for a couple months now but just tried using ichat for the 1st time the other day. My friends have aim and i can IM them but when i try to video chat i only see myself from my camera and even after accepting the invitation still cant see them. after messing with the settings my friend can see and hear me but me still nothing. what do i have to do to fix this or do i need something other than what my macbook pro comes equipped with? thanks!!

I haven't really used iChat either, as I am a relatively new Mac person. I have gotten as far as how to get it set up and to show my buddy list, but I however; do not have any buddies . Sad, but true. Anyhow, if you're wanting to test it out with another .mac account person then I would be more than happy to help assist you as much as possible. Maybe it is something with the AIM client that could be preventing them from seeing you.

  • People tell me when they use ichat I'm always signed on!

When others use ichat people are always telling me I'm signed on all the time. When people use there browser on gmail my username does not show up on there messager. I don't have ichat so why is it always saying I'm avaiable to talk.

    Hi,
    GoogleTalk is a Jabber server.
Some Jabber servers do what is called Off Line Messaging.
Basically this means that the server stores the messages until such time as you are back on line.
I am not sure if Google is one of these servers.
From what you say about not getting any Messages when you sign back in suggests that it does not do this.
Maybe I can explain this using AIM as an example.
AIM uses many servers to "answer" your login.
When you login it sends you your Buddy List.
It sends this with "flags" to say who is logged in or not. (or more importantly who is willing for you to see them as On Line)
You then get more data in the form of the current Buddy pics from the Buddy pic server.
On the AIM (Settings) website there is a specific place you can turn Off their Option to allow Off Line IMs
iChat and Messages have a similar setting in the General Section of the Preferences and about making sure the app is shown as Off Line on Quit.
This can mean that for AIM logins an iChat user could set each of these two settings differently.
If they leave the iChat Setting so it does NOT make the account look Off Line on Quit but sets the AIM Settings page  to Not Allow Of Line IMs they will appear On line when they have quit the app but not be troubled by Off Line IMs getting stacked up.
So the app can make the person look Off Line by telling servers not to bother it when the computer is On but the app is not in use.
Also the User can set AIM to not allow Off Line IMs.
With specific effeorts to look at your situation of using a web Browser I signed in to GoogleMail via a web browser and turned Off the account in Messages (the Mountain Lion version of iChat if you like).
I could see my GoogleMail (GoogleTalk0 ID On line in another Jabber account I have.
IF... I just quit the Google Page with out Logging out specifically I still appeared On  Line in the Buddy list for a few moments.
In one test it was for about  minute after I dismissed the page.
This is most likely down to the refresh time between the App updating and the web page login filtering through the GoogleTalk servers.
It is not any quicker at disappearing from my second Jabber Account's Buddy List if I specifically log out of the page first.
On the Google Sign-In page  there is a box that says "Stay Logged In ?" that can be ticked.
I am sure there is a setting or adjustment for the length of time this applies.
I think the default is two weeks but I cannot find the setting at the moment.
I have it ticked for when I am logged in but it seemed to make not difference to me as to the length of time after dismissing the Google Page in my Browser or Logging  out of Google Mail and therefore GoogleTalk before it went Off line in the other Jabber list.
As well as using the Messages app in Mountain Lion I have a Laptop running Snow Leopard and iChat 5
This too shows the GoogleMail Login going Off line.
I can't replicate what your friends are seeing.
I even looked at the Settings for the mail page and then the "Chat" option in there but find no settings about appearing Off Line or On Line on Quit.
    In summary.
I still feel it is something to do with the default period you can sign in for at Google on the Web Mail page and in turn how other Web Browser Logins and the iChat app look up this sort of info from the Google servers.
However I cannot find the settings for the default "stay Logged In" period or replicate the things your  Buddies see.

  • Can two peeps use iChat with different accounts on the same computer?

What do I do to REMOVE an old AIM account and replace it with a new account in IChat?
Can two peeps use iChat with different accounts in the same computer?
(Actually, two people share a laptop, but one of us cannot use her AIM account cuz mine is in iChat already... And, when traveling, I have the computer - and I would like to use iChat on the computer...)

In iChat 4 you can have more than one AIM Valid name logged in at once.
AIM valid = AIM, @mac.com or a MobileMe name.
What you are then stuck with is that iChat is linked to one Buddy Picture and The one Mac User Account's Address Book which may or may not have Full Names, emails details, or a Nickname in iChat 4 linked to the Screen Names.
Whilst it does let you both log in whilst using one Mac User Account there are drawbacks about who uses the keyboard and reading meesages from the other persons Buddies.

  • How can I use iChat for Hotmail?

I would like to use iChat with hotmail... is it possible? ANy other method thatn Jabber?

    Hi,
The only method at the moment to Contact MSN Buddies is using the Jabber Method and a Jabber Transport.
MSN for Mac version 8 can be downloaded as a free Standalone from Mactopia (the Microsoft Mac Pages) and can do Video chats.

  • Using iChat Server with Windows clients in an integrated Active Directory/Open Directory environment

A co-worker (Super Brent) and I were working on using iChat as an internal IM server after having used Openfire for a couple days. The reason for switching was basically that we had a Mac Mini Server that was available so we decided to take this on.
First problem: Knowing whether or not Kerberos was needed for AD/OD integration. We spent a ton of time on this, not knowing a huge amount about AD and with our server administrator on courses, we just kept poking at it and removed Kerberos.
For the AD/OD integration, we first bound the Mac Mini to our Active Directory server. We shut off LDAPv3 support as we only wanted to use the AD functionality. Additionally, we ensured that the search policy in Directory Utility only used Active Directory. Then we created an Open Directory master in the Open Directory service. We enabled a self-signed certificate and trusted it locally. After creating the iChat service, ensure that you use the self-signed SSL Certificate and set authentication to Standard. (no kerberos).
Second problem: Once this was complete, we started to test clients out. We were unable to successfully login using our AD credentials using Spark IM and Pandium IM. After trying nearly 100 different variations of server configs, we decided to try a new client. I installed Miranda IM on my Windows XP machine and tried a few different setups. It turned out that the magic potion was to make sure that the "resource" field was set to "Home" and use SSL for encryption. This resource setting was the deal breaker for the other IM clients as many of them such as Spark and Pandium do not have this as a login option.
We ended up using Pidgin IM as the Windows client of choice as it did have the resource variable and it's interface was the best suited for our environment and users.
I hope this helps someone out there as we spent days looking all over the internet trying to figure this out.
    Cheers,
    Frenchy and Super Brent

  • Error Message when using iChat w/ Video

I am receiving an error anytime that I use iChat video. It only occurs in certain circumstances though. They are anytime I have been in a video conference with someone for about 20/30 minutes, I am told that audio still comes through but the camera feed freezes. Then when that happens, I close down the video screen/window and attempt to re-connect. When attempting to reconnect, it tells me that it is asking for the other party to join in, tells me that it is connecting then I get an error message popping up.
I'm going to go ahead and throw this in here. I am using a 2Wire Router, my internet provider is ATT U-verse (I know feel for me).
Now, in order to get video to run again, both parties have to reboot their computers. Otherwise we will both continue to get an error. What in the bloody heck is going on? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!
Here is the particular error message.

Is System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming set to 1.5Mbps ?
Restart iChat if you have to change (the Automatic setting can cap iChat in Tiger and to a lesser extent Leopard)
In iChat > Preferences > Video Section set the Bandwidth Drop down to 500kbps
I say this as the symptom you describe may be your ISP trying to control Peer-to-Peer File sharing and as iChat is Peer-to-Peer in Video and Audio Only chats it seems it is subject to those ISPs playing with Bandwidth to control this.
It may pay to have the Connection Doctor (In the iChat > Video Menu) open to monitor if your Connection speed or your Buddies is the one that is dropping off.
You can change the Bandwidth setting in iChat during a chat and it does not need a restart.
    Which 2Wire device ?
What can you tell us about how it is set up for iChat ?
Does it have and is it using UPnP ?
Does it have DoS or SPI protection as this may also get in the way ?

  • What is the benefit of Using Data Adaptor

    Hello
I wonder that What is the benefit of Using Data Adaptor ? I don't know TopLink Technology , inorder to using Data Adaptor I should know toplink but what is the advatages of using BPEL database adaptors in conditions thet I can make webservices by making plsql web services or exposing ADF application modules more easier?
I think that if I use Data Adaptor (based of Toplink) I can use JTA feature for transaction managment , am I thinking Correct?
for example I can invoke to webservice A and the B in BPEL process with two DB adaptores (by global transaction ) such that if A failes the process automatically roles back the B transaction without need that I manauly compensate the undo process
    please help me ?

Thank you for your very useful comments about DB adapter
I tried again and I have Successfully deploy and test my DB adapter with using # for parameter.
But I have another question : We have ADF Application that using ADF bc for user data entry supporting in use case scenario , but we want to call web services (eg BPEL) in save operation instead of ADF application modules Normal commit !
If we want using Data adapter for persist the Data that user entered by UI , we must write a lot of Insert or Update statements in DB adapter because of lot of database entities.
How can we shorten this production scenario in our Project?

  • I want to use iChat video and file sharing with Windows users

Nowadays, iChat is compatible with AOL/AIM, Google Talk, Jabber, Mac.com and MobileMe instant messaging services. I know that Yahoo Messenger support will be available soon in Mac OS X Lion.
I tried using AOL/AIM and Google Talk natively in iChat in order to talk with Windows users which were using Google Talk application or web chatting (Me from: Google Talk - My friends from:  Google Talk, and Me from: AOL/AIM - My friends from:  Google Talk), but videoconference and file sharing were not available.
I also tried Windows Live Messenger in iChat via Jabber intermediate, but it is not efficient and doesn't work for videoconference and file sharing.
So, which IM service combination I should use to chat with Windows users in order to be able to use videoconference and file sharing using such a great app like iChat?
    Thanks you.

    Hi,
A lapsed Trial or lapsed Paid for MobileMe account will not work in any fashion, as a Screen Name in iChat/AIM apps or as a Email.  (Of course it is no longer an Valid Apple ID either).
Given that Google is a Jabber server iChat will Video (or Audio Only) Chat Jabber to Jabber.
With a Valid AIM name (AIM, MobileMe or @mac.com) then it is supposed to work to AIM on a PC
This tends to vary from person to person as to success.
From AIM version 6.5 AIM introduced a Send as Typing feature called "Real Time"
It does not work to iChat and in fact also has to be turned Off in the Buddy List at the AIM end for Video or Audio chats to work.
The AIM app also has to be allowed through the Windows Firewall as an Exception, preferably with UPnP enabled as well and UPnP enabled in their Router.
Trillian is a paid for App for PCs that provide an alternative.
Recently theri site offered 3 windows versions
The Pro version of verion 3.2 (known to work), a version 4 and a version 5 in beta.  The version 3.2 used to have a free Text chat version and only the Pro version was needed to Video.
Until the site was reorganised the 3.2 version was "On Sale" at a reduced price.
It seems version 5 is now out of beta
They are still separating out a Pro version.
    It is a multi-service client
There is also a Mac version although I have not tried it.
I am not sure what you mean by "Manage" your MSN Contacts.
How about using a MobileMe expired account screen name for using iChat with Windows-Google Talk users? Should I expect the same incompatibilities?
I have already addressed part of this. The fact the name will not work full stop.
However one way of reading this is that you are thing of linking AIM and Jabber (Google) Buddies in one Buddy List
Directly in iChat this cannot be done - unless you are the one with the Jabber Account and an AIM Transport set up.
You would be subject to the same Text Chat only restrictions.
It is a bit like the fact your phone line can be used for Fax, Telephone and DSL broadband. (in fact mine does TV as well)
You granny would not be able to talk to your Fax machine if that happened to answer the call.
Her Fax machine might be able to communicate with your computer if you had an active Fax app on there, and a dail-up modem active to answer.

  • Not sure how to use iChat

To use iChat do u use it to have all accounts in one (MSN, skype, AIM, etc)?

    Hi,
iChat can use any Name that is valid with AIM or Jabber.
AIM names include those gained from any AOL owned company such as early Netscape Names, Compuserve, names for the AIM Web site and AOL names. (they are all free)
Apple IDs are aslo valid and fall in to two groups.
Those ending in @Me.com gained from the MobileMe service and older ones that end @mac.com which came from the service Apple did before MobileMe called .Mac
@mac.com names are now offered as Free iChat names.
Jabber servers are interlinked and having a name from one can chat with anyone with another Jabber server name ID.
    GoogleMail IDs are Jabber names.
iChat cannot connect with Skype Different Protocols all round for Text and A/V chats.
MSN Buddies can be added through a method of registering a Jabber Server "Transport" that links with the MSN servers but it then only works for Text chats.
iChat creates a Buddy List for each Screen Name you have and can also do Mac to Mac Chats using Bonjour if the macs are on the same LAN.
See here and work the lower menu left to right
    http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/versions/ichatvers4/howtos4.html
This is for ichat 4 (In Leopard) but there are little changes at the level we are talking about here.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Using iChat AV and trying to video conference with a PC using AIM

I am trying to create an AV session from my mac to a PC. I am using iChat with an AIM username and the PC is using AIM. Everytime i try to establish a video connection it says that I did not respond. What can I do to fix this?

    HI Helen,
    Just to check.
    He is on XP ?
He is using AIM 5.9 ?
He has Tuned the camera and Mic to the App ?
If he is at Service Pack 2 he has enabled the app through the XP firewall ?
You have the MAc firewall Off.
The ports are enabled in your modem.
Either using UPnP or these actual ports
    5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403 for just the AIM stuff.
Have you changed the Quicktime setting to match your download speed ?
Can you and he get any of the people or test accounts o this page ?

  • Camera in Use iChat error message

When I try to initiate an iChat video chat, I get this message:
    Camera in Use
Your camera appears to be in use by another application. Please quit any other application that might be using the camera.
This was the first time I'd tried to access the webcam since I turned on the computer. The only other program that's open that access the webcam is Skype. I've also heard that when people try to initiate a video chat with me they are told that the camera is in use.
I've been using iChat for years; this problem just started happening within the last two weeks.
    Thanksd!

    Umm,
Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Your account > Login Items and see if Flash is listed there.
It may pay to try turning Off Flash in your Browser as a Test for a few minutes (i.e not permanently)

  • Apple iChat test servers seem to be offline a lot these days

I've been trying to use Apple's three iChat test servers - appleu3test01/appleu3test02/appleu3test03 - for videoconference testing, and it seems as though they're offline a lot more than I remember from even just a few months ago. Not with 'away' status - although that seems to happen more than I remember, too - but just entirely unavailable. appleu3test01 seems to be available slightly more often than the other 2, but not by much.
Anyone have any idea what's going on? They're a great resource, but a good deal less so when they're not available.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

    Great info, thanks!
Just for others who might stumble upon this thread, based on the icons in their buddy listings, [email protected] seems to be a dedicated videochat test server, while [email protected] seems to be a dedicated audiochat test server. I tried [email protected], but that doesn't seem to be working at the moment.

  • I cannot use iChat video with certain people

I have an iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.7. I use iChat 5.03.  I can screen share and video with all but one person in my virtual company of 7. I have an Airport Express and Zyxel Modem.  I have been unable to change the port to 443 in my iChat settings as advised in another support post.  It just reverts back to 5190.  I did go into the modem customization and add a port for iChat of 443 but I really don't know what I'm doing. Nothing seems to make a difference.  Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
Do these things and report back.
In iChat go to the iChat Preferences > Accounts section
    Highlight the Account/Screen Name involved.
On the Account Info tab on the right is a check box "Use this Account" Uncheck this Check box.
It will log you out of the server.
Now the Server Settings tab will be Editable (Dark Text)
Change the port to 443 (from 5190)
Go back to the Account Info Tab and check the "Use this Account" box to log in again.
Now Log on to the Router.
The first page you see should have three columns of Links.
At the bottom of the middle one should be UPnP
Select this link and Enable UPnP and then Save/Apply Settings.
The first of these steps will get around the Zyxel Quirk.
When most  routing devices do Port Forwarding they con't allow port to be forwarded twice (normally to another computer)
However iChat uses port 5190 on the TCP Protocol for Logins to AIM and then for FIle Tranfers on the UDP Protocol.
Some Routers set the Protocols in Port Forwarding as well, meaning that port 5190 has to be Forwarded twice to the same computer.
With the Zyxels - for some unexplained reason - this crosses over in to iChat's Video and Audio functions.
Changing the Login port (The only one you can change seems to get around this).
UPnP is a way of opening or allowing the ports on the Router.
    It is an Enable/Disable setting.
Once Enabled the app itself tells the Router which ports to allow.  (Some devices also have control about the Hops (How many devices can see it is doing UPnP) and how long a period of inactivity before they close again).
As iChat uses a random Port for Screen Sharing it is best to use UPnP as you cannot forward a Random port.
It is also simpler to set up and has the advantage that any computer on your LAN can then use the same Ports (Which Cannot be done with Port Forwarding).
    One last note.
Most Routing devices come with the first 1024 ports already open qand in a way that allows multiple computers to use them.
It means it works for Web Browsing (Port 80 and sometime port 443 on secure  site like here) and Mail (ports 25, 110, 443, 568, 965 and others depending on Server)
Setting Port Forwarding for port 443 may effect the normal functioning of the router and NOT allow some people to Browse Secure sites of get Mail from Secure servers.
You may have to Unset this.
