Benefits of Lightroom vs Camera RAW

I currently use the following:
Elements 11 (w/ Camera RAW)
Canon Rebel XS (1000D)
Canon Powershot SX50 HS).
I also shoot RAW that vast majority of the time.
I just downloaded a trial version of Lightroom 4.  So far seems like I can do everything in Elements and Camera RAW that I can do in Lightroom.  Am I missing something, or can anyone point out anything in particular?
Thanks

Brett,

  • Lightroom and Camera Raw

I am in the early stages of trying Lightroom 4. There are some great features and may purchase a copy after the trail ends.
However, I have a question about using Lightroom with older versions of Photoshop.
I made some changes to an image, mostly used the Lens Correction feature, changed the white balance and changed the tone curve as my images always look a little flat.
At the end of "developing" I like to add some sharpening. I prefer to use Photoshop for this as I use different mettods depending on what result I want.
When I chose Photo > Edit In > Photoshop CS4 (CS4 being the version of Photoshop I have) I get a message along the lines of Lightroom needing Camera Raw 6.7. If I select open anyway I see the original flat image before I made the changes in Lightroom. Is this correct.
My version of Photoshop is fully updated but the version of Camera Raw is 5.7. Can I get Photoshop to "use" Lightroom instead of Camera Raw?
I did once click a button that said something along the line of Use Lightroom, but Photoshop started to "do stuff" with the images I had imported into Lightroom. What was it doing?
    I hope that makes sense.
    Thanks for any help.
    Chris.

You should choose the option to open a copy with Lightroom settings. When you open an image from Lightroom into Photoshop, ACR is used to translate the adjustments made in Lightroom. Since you are using an older version, ACR cannot translate all of the adjustments. So it's best to let Lightroom create the copy first because it will include all of your Lightroom adjustments. It's really only a difference of WHEN the copy is made because after you make changes in Photoshop the new file has to be created anyway.

  • Lightroom to Camera Raw

I cannot open raw files from Lightroom in Camera Raw when I choose "edit with photoshop" from the LIghtroom menu. They simply open in photoshop itself and not Camera Raw. I am using Photoshop CS6 (latest upgrade) and LIghtroom 4 (Latest upgrade) on a Mac. Any help appreciated

Thanks for your replies. Mostly you have highlighted my problem. I have just switched to Photoshop and LR. Previously I was using Aperture 3. I do prefer the Camera Raw operation over the LR editing as it seems both quicker on my Mac and I find the interface easier to use.
I am hoping to use LR for its database and tracking. Ido backup to a seperate HD from the one I use for LR itself. The attaraction for me in opening a RAW file in Camera Raw before going to Ps6 is that sometimes I don't need to do the latter - but either way LR promises to keep track of editing and changes much the same as Aperture did.
Not sure if this is totally logical but I had hoped that the connection between LR and Camera Raw/Photoshop would be a direct and simple one. In fact I thought I read somewhere that choosing a raw file in LR and then "edit in Photoshop" should automatically open the file in Camera Raw and then progress on to Photoshop as its next step.  Perhaps I am expecting too much?  I am new to the forum and Ps6/LR but keen to learn.
Thanks everyone for your help  Cheers

  • Lightroom VS Camera Raw

I'd appreciate some input. I've been using lightroom 3.2 for some time and really like it for organizing my photos and most editing chores. I had been using PSE for what I couldn't do in Lightroom. I've recently switched to PS CS5, something I should have done a long time ago.
My dilemma is this; should I also switch from Lightroom to Camera Raw? Is there a definite advantage to using Camera Raw VS Lightroom?
    Thanks,

First, I don't think you have to "pick" one or the other exclusively.  They're both tools you can use, and importantly, they both use the same underlying engine to process images.
The primary difference is in how the work flows.
If you process a lot of images to a final product in a "production" type of environment, then you might find LightRoom more agreeable.  To work on "quality rather than quantity", perhaps you'll want to open an individual image into Photoshop through Camera Raw, and process it further in Photoshop.
Nothing is absolute; Camera Raw can be used to process (small) sets of images, and of course Lightroom can be used to process one image.

  • Can LightRoom use Camera Raw 4.5?

I downloaded the ACR 4.5 plugin to the proper directory on my Mac, and Photoshop CS3 sees it correctly, and can open RAW (ORF) files from my Olympus E-520.
However, it seems Adobe LightRoom 1.4.1 cannot open RAW (ORF) files from the E-520. Is this normal? Is the problem that LightRoom cannot use this feature of ACR 4.5, or is the problem that there is some out-of-synch cache in LightRoom containing supported cameras? Or does LightRoom contain its own internal version of ACR? I checked, I only have ACR 4.5 installed on my Mac.
    Many thanks!

Yes, exactly. As far as I understand, the equivalent of Camera Raw 4.5, with regard to the raw engine, is Lightroom 2.0---both have Beta status as of now and are not yet officially released.

  • Lightroom 4 / Camera RAW 6.7 causing Premiere Problems?

I've also posted this in the Premiere Forum, but wanted to copy it here too....
After installing Lightroom 4 and the Camera RAW 6.7 beta, my Premiere Pro CS5.5.2 Win7Pro stopped working, popping up this garbled error message:
(The other program which stopped working at the same time was the Sony EXCAM EX Clip Browser!)
A reinstallation of Premiere Pro CS5.5 had got Premiere working again, but just wondering if anyone else had had this issue?

Since that was a beta, was there a place to report problems on the download page?

  • Lightroom 4 camera raw plugin 7.4 install questions

I have Lightroon 4 and CS4, When I right click to edit in CS4 I get a dialog box that says "This version of lightroom may require the Photoshop camera RAW plug-in version 7.4 for full compatibility. Any help?

LR always expects an ACR plug-in that is the same as is compatible with its version.   You must have LR 4.4 so it expects ACR 7.4.
Unfortunately you’d need PS-CS6 or PS-CC to get ACR 7.x or higher, so with CS4 you can only use ACR 5.x.
In such a situation you should choose the option to Render with LR Adjustments and you’ll see a TIF or PSD in PS, rather than PS using ACR to render the file, which is the normal situation when the versions of LR and ACR match.
If you’re not seeing that option whenever you use Edit In PS, then go into the LR preferences and choose Reset Warning Dialogs, so it’ll ask you, again.

  • Importing images with Lightroom 2  & Camera RAW 4.5

The following query has been raised with Adobe Technical Support (5 days ago and I am still waiting for a response/reply. They claim to reply within 24 hours but they have not on this occasion......they seem to be ignoring me
Perhaps a fellow user can help to identify or resolve the problem.
    Operating System:
Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 3)
    Software:
Adobe Design Premium CS3 (10.0.1); Photoshop Lightroom 1.4 (which was working fine) and Lightroom 2 (on trial and not working particularly well)
I am using a trial download of Photoshop Lightroom 2 (with Camera RAW 4.5 in Photoshop CS3).
I am having a few problems with editing Lightroom 2 images in Photoshop CS3 but I understand that Adobe is currently investigating a solution to this problem.
I have also noticed another potential problem since I have started to import images from a computer drive to Lightroom 2 and converting the Manufacturers RAW files to DNG (with the option to leave the files at their current location/drive).
My RAW and JPEG files open ok in Camera RAW (v 4.5) for basic editing and subsequently to Photoshop for more detailed work. The problem is that all my images are now opening as Smart Objects by default in Photoshop CS3, as opposed to opening as a Background layer". (I have not knowingly opted to use the Open as Smart Object option.
I am not entirely sure how this came about but I have also lost the capacity to edit images with empty Levels adjustment layers or percentage (%) grey fill option).
I am able to highlight the respective layer and create the empty Levels adjustment layer, change the blend mode to either Multiply or Screen, fill the Layer Mask with Black (Alt & backspace), change the opacity level as desired, select the brush tool and change the foreground colour to white to enable the applicable Dodge or Burn processes.
Unfortunately, it does not function irrespective of the preferred opacity level. The Dodge or Burn feature is static with no effect on the image.
I cannot recall any settings to open all files as Smart Objects in Photoshop CS3 but would welcome some help in identifying such a setting if it exists. Alternatively, I would welcome any other suggested methods of correcting the above difficulties.
The same difficulties are evident when I try to use the Dodge or Burn features via the Edit and Fill option with a percentage of Grey and the Overlay Blend Mode.
The "Common Denominator" of the above difficulties appear to be Lightroom 2 and Camera RAW 4.5 (individually and or collectively) and now I am stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Are any other users experiencing similar issues or have any suggestions about how I might correct or resolve these problems? ......
I am not afraid of hearing or accepting that the "Dummy Factor" has played some part or how I may release myself from the said "Dummy Factor".....any help is welcome help.
Adobe Technical Support seems to be ignoring me......I wonder why?
    Regards
    Bob Wallace

Essentially you are wrapping the raw image data into a special type of layer, a "smart object". You can then revisit and fine tune the Camera Raw conversion as often as you want and take advantage of working directly on the raw data in its pre-Photoshop purity. You can also apply to this smart object layer a number of Photoshop adjustments and filters - and again redo and fine tune them as often as you wish.
You'll find them explained in a number of recent books. I know Scott Kelby is keen on them, there are examples on Russell Brown's site, and my own book last year on B&W strongly advocated their use.
    Have a play.

  • Lightroom VS Camera Raw 5.5 (color correction)

Hi, does somebody know if discarding the advantage of making layers of Photoshop, is the Adobe Lightroom color correction controls superiors to the CameraRaw PS Interface correction controls ??? I mean for color correction purposes is Adobe Lightroom  better tan PS's  camera raw interface ???? because for me both controls seem to be pretty much the same thing,  does anyone know something about it ??
    Thank you in advance !

They seem the same because they are the same thing. Lightroom is basically an interface built around the camera raw processing core so you will get exactly the same results. The only thing really that you can do in Camera RAW that you can't in Lightroom is point curves (the interface simply doesn't expose them at the moment), which are almost never needed in raw conversion, except if you do special effects. I almost never use Photoshop anymore as Lightroom basically does all I need.
P.S. the latest version of camera RAW is 5.6! Lightroom is at 2.6. The last number corresponds not by accident.

  • Opening photos from Lightroom into Camera Raw?

    Hello!
I have a little problem since I upgraded to CS4.
I used to open my (RAW) photos from Lightroom (2) into Camera Raw - it did it automatically when I clicked "edit in photoshop". Now it doesn't work anymore, and I have no idea why - it opens the pictures directly into Photoshop. I was told in the Lightroom forum that it's a functionality that was changed in CS4 and that I wouldn't be able to get to Camera Raw from Lightroom anymore.
However, I really liked my old workflow Lightroom > Camera Raw > Photoshop, and I much prefer CR's interface, so if anybody's got an idea on how to fix this, or get it to work again, it would be really great.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Maybe the following would help.
    1. In lightroom, go to: Photo>Edit In>Open as Smart Object in Photoshop.
    2. Once the photo is in photoshop, double click the Smart object thumbnail in the layers panel to open camera raw.

  • Lightroom, PhotoShop, Camera RAW & Bridge?

    Hi Guys
I run PS CS5 (in the Master Collection) and I would be interested to find out if Lightroom offers something PS, Bridge and Camera Raw cannot provide separately or combined? I've been using PS for a good few years but now I'm working with my own digital captures, I've started using cameraRaw to clean-up my Raw images. In this respect it would be useful to know if Lightroom offers something additional or some form of efficiency.
    Regards,
    Graham

Lightroom is a database while Bridge is a browser. That's the fundimental differences. Both Camera Raw and Lightroom work with the same raw processing pipeline and can redner files the same (assuming equal versions of both). But the usability and UI is a bit different in each.
Lightroom is designed more as a single stop raw image processing and image management workflow solution. Whether or not it's your cup of tea depends on what sort of volume you produce and what sort of workflow you want. The best way to try Lightroom is to download the demo and give it a try.

  • Lightroom and Camera Raw 3.7 discrepancy

After I process am image in Lightroom 1.0, I look to see if any highlights are burned out. Then if I open the same image in Camera Raw 3.7, it shows a considerably higher degree of highlights being burned out than Lightroom does. Has anyone noticed this difference? How would I know which program is giving me more accurate information?

ACR probably figures the blowing out slightly differently then LR, but assuming both are simply showing where one of the channels saturates, the difference is probably coming from the different white point of adobeRGB vs prophotoRGB (D65 vs D50), this will cause slight differences in where you'll blow out highlights since it shifts the color around slightly. If you set up ACR to render to ppRGB, you should see more or less the same blown out areas.
Also, keep in mind that what is shown is where the
result is blown out. You cannot see where one of the CCD or CMOS channels is blown out with ACR or lightroom as the white balance correction and rendering in the new color space distorts that information. That would be really useful information BTW, but I don't know how to get to it currently.

  • Lightroom 5 Camera Raw 8.1?

I cant install the Camera Raw 8.1 Update in my Lightroom 5 Version. The Path "Help-Updates" say "No newest Update available" (all in German on Mac OSX, LR5 (Upgraded from LR4)).
    I need the Update!

On Windows 7 64-bit, comparing LR 5.2 and ACR 8.2/DNG Converter 8.2 lens profiles from their following respective folders:
    LR 5.2:  C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.2\Resources\LensProfiles\1.0
    DNGC 8.2:  C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0
848 lens profiles are identical between the two sets of subfolders, while the ACR 8.2/DNG Converter 8.2 has four extra profiles:
                    .\sigma\olympus\olympus imaging corp. (sigma30mm1.4 ) - raw.lcp
                    .\sigma\olympus\olympus imaging corp. (sigma70-200mm2.8 ) - raw.lcp
                    .\sigma\pentax\pentax (sigma_18-200mm_f3.5-6.3_dc_os_hsm) - raw.lcp
                    .\sigma\pentax\pentax (sigma_200-500mm_f2.8_apo_ex_dg ) - raw.lcp
These four extra profiles in the camera-raw subfolders are from back in March 2010 and appear to be duplicates of profiles already in the Sigma folder, so may be obsolete, copies.

  • Color discrepancy between Lightroom and Camera Raw

I'm new to LR and came across a color issue when viewing the photos in LR.
When view the RAW in LR, I see a color discrepancy compare with ACR. The color in LR is more like the JPEG view in Windows Photo Viewer (an non color-managed application). I suspect it's a color space config but can't find any in LR as in PS.
When I changed my monitor's ICC profile to "SRGB IEC61966-2.1", all the applications, LR, ACR, WPV, look the same then. It's said that profile just for troubleshooting and should change back to monitor's profile. Can someone help to explain what's happen and what should I do to get consistent color? Thanks a lot!

It sounds like the monitor profile from the monitor manufacturer is not compatible with LR.  This is a common problem, and you have confirmed it by temporarily switching to sRGB.
If the only profiles you have available are sRGB (which is consistent but may be wrong) and the monitor profile (which doesn’t work) then for more accurate color you’ll need to buy a hardware calibrator.
I use the i1DisplayPro.  Others might use a Spyder or a ColorMunki, although the i1DisplayPro has some more detailed options for creating profiles (Matrix vs LUT or ICCv2 vs ICCv4) that can be necessary to make LR happy, or at least my preference is to have a more powerful program in case I do need to tweak things.  I haven’t ever used a ColorMunki or Spyder so perhaps they work fine, too.  I think the color-measuring hardware with the i1 is better, though.  I guess you get what you pay for.

  • Cannot Use Camera Raw out of LightRoom 4

Below is a lengthy dialogue that I just had with Tech Support via Chat regarding accessing Camera Raw directly out of LightRoom 4.  The end result is that it can't be done.  LightRoom 4 has it's own "Develop" section and if you try to "Edit in: PhotoShop 6" the RAW image will bypass Camera Raw and open directly into PhotoShop.  Something that I was surprised at and frustrated by.  I thought for sure I was missing somehting.
I do not recommend buying LightRoom other than a means of "organizing" our images.  I simply use Bridgne and am able to open a Canon "CR2" Raw file directly into Camera Raw and then after making my adjustments directly into PhotoShop.  LightRoom lacks Layers, Paths and Channels and a host of other wonderful adjustment / manipulation capabilites not found in LightRoom.
So, if you are like me and want to use Camera Raw prior to going to PhotoShop then LightRoom will not get you there.  I spent a tremendous amount of time researching it thinking I must be missing something and then I contacted Support via Chat and we went through changing %AppData%, which only resulted in me losing all my PhotoShop Preferences!  A total waste of the Technician's time and mine.
I share the below chat with you only to show you the ludicrous amount of time wasted when the answer remains the same:  YOU CANNOT ACCESS CAMERA RAW DIRECTLY OUT OF LIGHTROOM 4
Thank you for choosing Adobe. A representative will be with you shortly. Your estimated wait time is 0 minute(s) and 3 second(s) or longer as there are 1 customer(s) in line ahead of you.
You are now chatting with 'Soumyadeep'
Soumyadeep: Hello. Welcome to Adobe Technical Support.
    Soumyadeep: Hi Fred!
Fred: Hi there my friend. I am trying to use Lightroom 4, but frankly am not happy with the way it handles RAW files.
Fred: I cannot open a Canon ".cr2" RAW file directly into Camera Raw from LightRoom.
Soumyadeep: I have received your query. Please allow me a moment to verify your account and to review the details of your request.
Fred: Thanks. I have also gone through all of the information I can find in the "Help Menu" looking up everything. Can't find a thing on LightRoom 4. I did not have this problem with Lightroom 3.
Fred: The RAW file that it references is "DNG".
Soumyadeep: I understand that you are unable to preview cr2 raw images in Lightroom 4, am I correct?
Fred: No, I can preview it, but when i want to open it the only choice I am given is CS6. I cannot open it into Camera Raw and it actually choses a completely different and inappropriate plug in from NIK Software.
    Soumyadeep: Thank you for confirming.
Fred: I know I can change that in the "Prefernces" in Lightroom 4 but I can't find Camera Raw to select as the choice.
Soumyadeep: I will be glad to assist you with this.
Soumyadeep: May I have the serial number of the product please?
Fred: I just checked again and it is set to a NIK Software plugin as an external software to open the file.
Fred: Yes, let me get it for you.

    Fred: OK, just a second.
Fred: So, I go to "Develop" it will open in Camera Raw 7.01?
Fred: Frankly, this is the reason that I have just been using Bridge is because of the seemingly lack of coherent connection between LightRoom 4 and PhotoShop CS6.
Soumyadeep: I would like to inform you that you will not have any separate camera raw plugins for Lightroom. Since Lightroom will not require a camera raw converter.
Fred: At least I can open into Camera Raw and make the necessary adjustments and it will load in to PhotoShop.
Fred: OK, then why when opening a "RAW" image out of LightRoom does it go directly to CS6 bypassing Camera Raw?
Fred: Not allowing all of the wonderful adjustment toos, particularly the new ones in Camera Raw. I just don't understand the disconnect.
Soumyadeep: Fred, may I know which product you are referring as  "CS6"?
Fred: If I had wanted to process all my images in LightRoom I would not have wasted my money on CS6. Does that make sense?
    Fred: PhotoShop CS6
    Fred: Or PhotoShop 6 Extended
Soumyadeep: Thank you for the information.
Fred: The question still remains "Why does LightRoom 4 only recongize DNG files and not other RAW file formats and not allow them to be opened into Camera Raw?"
Fred: I don't want to process my images in LightRoom 4. I want to catalog and sort them. I want to process the RAW files from Canon in Camera Raw and then move on to PhotoShop 6 Extended.
Fred: So, what you are telling me is that I can't open a RAW file in LightRoom into Camera Raw. Simply stated.
Soumyadeep: Fred, I can understand your concern. Lightroom will not require a camera raw converter.
Soumyadeep: May I have the name of the camera model you are referring?
Fred: Two camera models: EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 60D
Soumyadeep: Please so that I can check further and try to troubleshoot your issue.
Soumyadeep: .Thank you for the information.
Fred: Both are listed as supported by Adobe PhotoShop and Camera Raw. I found that in my research.
    Soumyadeep: Okay.
Soumyadeep: Please close all the Adobe applications.
Fred: I simply want to go from LightRoom 4 directly to Camera Raw 7.01 and then onto PhotoShop 6 Extended. Seems pretty straight forward and logical to me. Then again I'm not Adobe.
Fred: OK, just a moment and I'll do that.
    Soumyadeep: Click on Start.
Soumyadeep: Fred, may I know what operating system you are using?
Fred: I am working on Windows 7 64 bit operating system.
Fred: I have closed all applications from Adobe.
Soumyadeep: Thank you for the information.
    Soumyadeep: Click on Start.
Soumyadeep: Just type %Appdata% in the search box and hit the enter key.
Fred: Ok, Im pretty computer savy so just tell me where you want to go.
Soumyadeep: Double click on Adobe folder.
    Fred: Done
Soumyadeep: In that folder you will have a folder CameraRaw. Please rename the folder as CameraRawold.
    Fred: Done
Soumyadeep: In that folder you will have a folder Adobe Photoshop CS6. Please rename the folder as Adobe Photoshop CS6old
Soumyadeep: After renaming the images please close the page and try to open a raw file and let me know the exact result.
    Fred: Done
Fred: Just a moment. I have renamed CameraRawold and Adobe6Old. i am going to navigate to my external drive and click on a RAW File
    Soumyadeep: Okay.
Soumyadeep: Let me know the status.
Fred: It is opening PhotoShop 6 Extended.
Fred: I can change the properties of the file to open in another program if that is where we are going.
Fred: It also created an error that stated that it recognized graphic software that is not completely supported and PhotoShop is not opening normally.
Fred: Given a little more time it opened in Camera Raw.
Soumyadeep: Fred, once more step you need to perform as you got an error regarding graphic software.
Soumyadeep: Please try to work on the Camera Raw and let me know it is working fine or not.
Fred: And I lost my presets.
Fred: OK, where does this leave us?
Fred: With regards to LightRoom 4?
Soumyadeep: Fred, you wanted to open the raw images in Camera raw option instead of Photoshop CS6, right?
Fred: Camera Raw appears to be functiong fine.
    Soumyadeep: Great!
Soumyadeep: Please close all the Adobe application.
Soumyadeep: Re launch Photoshop and type CNTRL+ K.
Soumyadeep: Let me know once you are done.
Fred: Checking the "CR2" files out of Canon the dafault to open is with PhotoShop 6
Fred: Ok, let me close all of them.
    Fred: OK, closed sir.
Soumyadeep: Please navigate to Performance tab.
Fred: "Performance Tab" in what program?
Soumyadeep: Re launch Photoshop and type CNTRL+ K
Soumyadeep: A new window will pop up "Preference"
Fred: Just a second it is opening. Thanks for help.
Fred: I am now at the Prefernces box. Performance Tab
    Soumyadeep: You are welcome.
    Soumyadeep: Correct.
    Fred: OK, I'm in Preferences
Soumyadeep: Please let me know Use Graphics Processor is checked or unchecked.
Fred: It is checked. I do know that on this machine that the graphics processor is not fully supported due to a lack of a separte video card.
Soumyadeep: Okay. Please do check once that the graphic drives are updated or not.
Soumyadeep: Fred, I hope now your are able to open the raw images in camera raw as you were referring?
Fred: Just a second. Driver software is up to date.
Fred: Let me open LightRoom 4 and see where it goes. Just a second.
    Soumyadeep: Sure.
Fred: Lightroom is taking a long time to open now.
Fred: Now I'm getting the message that it is not responding.
Fred: OK, it finally opened. Just a second.
    Soumyadeep: Okay.
Soumyadeep: Please let me know the result.
Fred: In light room when I select "Edit In PhotoShop 6" it is going directly to Photoshop 6 and not opening Camera Raw. Still.
Fred: So, my friend. We are still back to the original question and now I have to reload all of my preferences lost due to the change in AppData. LOL!
Fred: I guess I can organize all I ant in LightRoom and still use Bridge to edit and work on my images.
Fred: Sorry! Organize all I want and still edit out of Bridge.
Soumyadeep: Fred, I am sorry to inform you that when you will open the images from Lightroom it will not require the camera raw and also when you will try to open the images in other software from Lightroom it will directly open in that software. Since Lightroom itself works as a Came

Jim, thank you for an excellent responce.  I truthfully had researched the "Help" section on LightRoom and PhotoShop and found nothing that even remotely resembled your straight forward and easy to follow directions.  After upgrading to CS6 and LightRoom 4 I am delighted with all of the new features that Adobe created in PhotoShop.  I'm not sure that LightRoom 4 was as great an advancement as PhotoShop itself.
I am certainly going to give your solution a try and see how it works out for me.   I concur that I probably do not fully understand and appreciate the relationship between the two programs.  Today was my attempt of gaining a better insight to that relationship.  Thank you for your response!
