Benefits of SCAN

I want to find all benefits of using SCAN listeners over using VIP's without SCAN. The following is my summary, along with some comments. I'd like to hear your comments, and please add anything I missed. Thanks.
* Less typing in a TNS entry.
* If you add or remove a node, or make a node unavailable or available, you don't need to modify all your clients' TNS entry. But many shops centrally manage TNS (by periodically distributing a standard tnsnames.ora to all clients, placing the file on a shared drive, using OID or Oracle Names server, etc). This benefit is minimized.
* Because SCAN is tied to 3 IPs, DNS provides round-robin on the client side. If you use VIP's without SCAN, you have to remember to add load_balance=yes to the TNS stanza to have the same effect.
* Some clients have trouble accepting more than one database host entry in their configuration. SCAN is a life saver.
* If you use policy-managed databases, SCAN is mandatory.
* Installation of RAC requires SCAN. But you can choose to not use it later, or even disable it.
Disadvantage or caution in using SCAN is not in this list.

Your list is good but here is a couple of thoughts:
If client is using version older than 11.2 then you still need to add several IPs in TNS entry (even server is SCAN capable) .
This is because the SCAN was introduced in version 11.2.
There is also new features for SCAN in Oracle 12c:
- SCAN and Oracle Clusterware managed VIPs now support IPv6 based IP addresses.
- SCAN is by default restricted to only accept service registration from nodes in the cluster.
- SCAN supports multiple subnets in the cluster (one SCAN per subnet).

Experience Scanning with Acrobat 9 on a Mac

Friends asked for a copy of a 4-page document we'd used in a study group. I'll just scan it in with Acrobat! Then we have the benefits of its being electronic. Plus it'll give me a chance to try out Acrobat 9, which I just got, and scanning on my Mac (on Windows until recently).
Why it took me an hour to scan the document:
Acrobat can assemble a PDF file from scanned pages and OCR it. I'll just scan in this four page doc and send it out as PDF. Simple, right?
Bring up the Acrobat panel to Create PDF From Scanner, and it says to select a scanner. There are none on the list. Hmm.
When I set up my Mac a few weeks ago I tested and was able to scan. Maybe it's because my printer/scanner is now plugged in via TimeCapsule rather than directly as before. Can my Mac see it? How do I know? Can it see the printer device--perhaps both printer and scanner don't come online at the same time. Bring up Sys Prefs, it shows a green light by the TimeCapsule-connected printer. Ah, but it did that yesterday even though it could NOT print to it. Bring up the Print Queue for that printer and click Utility. ...scanning for printers...found none. Do I believe that? Try printing to it. It works. Finding none doesn't mean it isn't working.
Try plugging the printer/scanner directly into the Mac. No difference.
Follow the "maybe scan is different from printing" thought. Where is the System Prefs for Scan/Fax? Doesn't seem to be one. Maybe it's just TWAIN drivers. How was it I tested scanning initially? Search [Finder] for scanner. Nothing obvious. Futz around a bit. Ah, it was Image Capture.
Image Capture CAN see the scanner. So I could scan in by hand to separate files and assemble in Acrobat. Sure would be easier if Acrobat had control of the scanner as it [presumably] knows more about what it needs re scan settings. Search Internet for problem. Aha, found it on the third hit. The Epson TWAIN (scan) driver must not be Universal binary. Acrobat sees only Mac Universal binaries.
Check Adobe documentation to see if there's a way around this. None found. They don't even acknowledge the Universal binary requirement when talking about Mac.
So, scan separate pages using Image Capture. Ahh. The document's printed on really thin paper so type from the back side is bleeding through, badly. How can I adjust the contrast on the scanner to compensate? Nothing obvious. What if I tell Image Capture it's Text? No, that just seems to change Bit Depth to 1. Changing it back to 8 causes the Document type to be Photo. Well, at least there's a setting for B&W Photo.
Scan to TIFF files (the default). Go into Acrobat and create a PDF from the four TIFFs. Run OCR. Hmm. Still looks awful because of bleed through in image--OCR just adds invisible (selectable, searchable) text on top, without discarding image--and file size is rather large. It's good enough, but now I'm curious as I've had better results with this in the past with Acrobat 8 on Windows, though it's been so long I can't remember exactly how.
Back to the Internet to read about OCR in Acrobat 9. Ahh. I think they phased out the previous method I used and replaced it with "ClearScan", a new technology which creates Type 3 approximation fonts on the fly and places those visible on top with the scanned image, greatly compressed (and de-skewed) underneath. They recommend scanning at 300 dpi (I'd used whatever the default was, 150 I think).
OK. Try scanning again. Set to 300 dpi. Hmm. Must be SOME way to change the contrast to correct the bleed through. Ahh. It's set to "Image Correction: None". I'd missed that before--my bad. Try "Manual". I get a control panel. No contrast but I can affect brightness separately in Dark, Midtones, and Light. Turning up Light does it. Scan all the pages again. Bleed through is gone (as seen in Preview windows that pop up).
Go into Acrobat and recreate the PDF from the TIFFs. Well, it won't let me see the files. I scanned them into /tmp. (I've set up a symlink of /tmp to /FinderVisibleRoot/tmp (along with other hidden / dirs).) tmp is greyed out though not others in that dir. Futz around a bit trying other operations which open a file panel, come back, and now tmp's not greyed out. Sigh.
Create the PDF from the TIFFs. Looks exactly like before, bleed through and all. WTF? Check the TIFFs in Preview--as expected; no bleed through. Perhaps something got cached. Close and restart Acrobat and try again. Same result.
The Image Capture adjustment to Brightness must not have changed the actual scan but some meta data stored in the TIFF. ??
Where can I tell Acrobat to honor that? There are no options when I open files to be combined to create the PDF. "Try again, Luke." Nope.
Let's try just one file at a time with Create PDF From File. Same problem. The files panel for opening those files DOES have a Settings... button, but it's greyed out. It's set to "All Types", which includes TIFF. What if I change it to just TIFF? AHA!! Now the Settings... button is active. Not obvious to me (I get why, given multiple types could be selected, but my gosh).
Now I can control how Acrobat changes the incoming TIFFs (I'm guessing PDF doesn't support TIFF directly so converts to JPEG, CCITT, etc.). Not exactly sure how conversion works so futz with a few of what I imagine are the obvious options. No effect. Hmm.
Ah. Maybe Image Capture (or the driver) is actually creating a color profile to affect the image adjustments I made, and embedding that in the TIFF. Can color profiles be put in TIFFs? I didn't think so. Turns out they can. And retaining embedded profiles was turned on in the conversion settings by default for all image types EXCEPT greyscale. :-) Turn it on for greyscale and try again. Voila!
OK. Go back to Merge Files Into Single PDF to do all the pages. Oops. There's no Settings... option where I can tell it to keep the embedded profiles. Sigh. Use Create PDF From File for each page then merge those.
Now run OCR with ClearScan on the resulting PDF, and keep only very low resolution of original scan. Result is a small (196K for 4 pg), clean looking, fully searchable document!
The on-the-fly Type 3 fonts it created aren't great (flaws visible when zoomed). I think an older technology we had at Adobe of trying to match scanned chars to available fonts stands a better chance for high fidelity (and this may still be avail in a non-ClearScan option). However, I still like the new ClearScan technology for some uses like this, where fidelity isn't such an issue.
Hopefully, the Universal binary problem on Mac with Acrobat will go away at some point (when I get a new printer? ) so I'll just be able to scan directly into PDF. And Adobe will need to add Settings for Merge Files Into A Single PDF to control color profile handling, etc.

When I posted the message, it showed me "More Like This" with some relevant threads. Relevance was pretty cool.
I read there are Acrobat app-wide conversion settings for importing different file types. If I set Preferences/Convert To PDF/TIFF settings, it affects files specified to Merge Files Into A Single PDF. It's still inconsistent that I specify it one way for Create PDF From File and another for Merge Files Into A Single PDF, but at least it can be done.

What are the benefits of Upgrading Apps 10.7 SC to 11i ??

I am developing a small presentation for a client who uses Financial Management and Order Management suite under 10.7 SC. I am looking at the benefits that my client would get from upgrading: Here are the few points that I have come up with, AND I WOULD APPRECIATE IF ANYONE CAN PLEASE EITHER CORRECT THEM OR GIVE ME ADDITIONAL POINTS TO INCLUDE:
1. Oracle withdraws support of 10.7 SC from June 2003
2. Host of new features and new modules in 11i
3. Supports electronic business, giving corporate IT an edge with information anytime and anywhere concept.
4. 11i facilities the use of global database supporting multi currency etc
5. As compared to fragmented 10.7 system, 11i is completely integrated
6. 11i is built upon 8i taking advantage of some of the most advanced RDBMS solutions, including fast access and more data integrity
7. 11i is cheaper to maintain and therefore, gives instant cost reductions
8. Better GUI in 11i as compared to 10.7 SC

If your 9630 is working well, it's doing everything you need it to do, and you are pleased, there is absolutely no reason to upgrade. i wouldn't encourage it.
There's no change log for the OS upgrade, but there are a few features which may or may not benefit you, like some easier ability to change what email accounts flow to your main messages icon, and other stuff.
To find those comments, you just have to read through some threads just like you've already done, but older posts because .591 wasn't the first OS 5 released for the 9630.
From your post, I'd say there is no reason compelling you to upgrade.

What are the benefits of losses of convertin HFS+ to journaled?

Hello! Dirung the recovery process converted my HFS+ to HFS+ journaled. Is this good or bad? What are the benefits or losses of journaled?
PS Initially there was a Mountain Lion installed on HFS+ non-nournaled. But upon recovery Lion (10.7) installed and during installation it demanded me to convert partition from HFS+ to HFS+ journaled.

Journaling does not hurt you, it only helps. It makes sure that all file metadata operations are performed on the correct order, and in the event of a crash, power failure, cable pulled out of external drive, etc... that any file metadata changes occuring at the moment will either be properly completed or rolled back so that the file system is correct.
File metadata are time stamps, ownership, permissions, storage allocation, directory entries, etc... Everything except you actual data.
Without journaling, the current huge terabyte sized drives with millions of files on them would require scanning every file looking at every bit of file system metadata after a crash to make sure that the file system integrety was correct before allowing the drive to be mounted for your use.
This full file system check (fsck) can take hours. The journal replay takes seconds.
You WANT the Journal.

Oracle SGA benefits of using indexes

Goo day people,
We have been having performance issues and then the SGA was not sized coprrectely.
The size of the SGA was 720mb so we then pushed it to 4 gig which I blv is enough.
We then did a run of the tuning advisory on the top sql queries that were top one,
the advisor then pointed on that we need to use indexes on those queries .
We then advised the developers that they need to use indexes as it will improve
performance .. This morning the ADDM pointed out that we need to up the sga
to 5 Gig and I dont see this a solution to the problem.
I need to find a note on what benefits does using indexes have on the SGA and the overall perfomance
so that I can show the business that increasing the SGA wont solve the problem.

Action     Increase the size of the SGA by setting the parameter "sga_target" to 5120 M.One of the biggest impact of indexes (if they fit in the scenario) is in reducing the IO (by avoiding full table scans). Reduced IO means faster system. Absence of indexes would mean that you read lots of data into the memory [buffer cache] and data would flush out quickly too (to make space for the new data), resulting in more IO. So having indexes in place means you only read as much amount of data as required and frequently accessed data stays in the memory.
Kinda incomplete answer...Lets wait for other experts' comments :)

Automation from Scanning to DMS creation

Hi Friends,
Is there any link bringing scanning doc. into DMS. What process we are following scanning the doc. in a local file. Then create a DMS & attaching. Then releasing the DMS document. The problems while creating doc. are:
1. We can attach the same file twice
2. There is no control for duplicate chk
Is there any software which will connects the scanning & DMS directly and create DMS doc. automatically. In this process is it possible to read certain data in invoce & enter the same in DMS fields.
Why I am looking this process is we will be doing scanning of 1000docs of various doc. types . In each invoice there will be 20pages. Chances of error will be much in manual process.

I hope in this we need to install a separate content server to store the documents.
In our case we already have one contenent server / SAPHTTP which we are using for DMS. Since it has capacity, we are trying to use the same. after two years we will archive & store in other areas.
In standard Invoice verification we don't have option of viewing DMS document for which we use screen exit.
For this DMS document type we added certain characteristics since I want to add new fields there by we use these filds furher processing.
Can I know what are all benefits with archivelink compare to DMS.

Benefits vs Disadvantages of using DNS for Oracle RAC (12c or 11g)

For nearly all of my Oracle RAC Builds, I've used /etc/hosts and not DNS. As such I've not been able to take full advantage of GNS and SCANS.
Please note some of your experiences associated with the benefits of using DNS configuration for your Oracle 12c RAC Builds. I'm building my 12c RAC now and I'm starting to configure DNS so that I can provide my customers with better value/add of High Availability. I've used /etc/hosts in the past and one of my arguments in using /etc/hosts can be more secure because you only put in the /etc/hosts what you want the node to know. I also beleave that using /etc/hosts is a lot more simple and perhaps that could be a potential vulnerability. I've decided to start using DNS and to learn how to make it secure.

I see no disadvantages using DNS.
What happens with your clients if your DNS goes down? It stop working?
What is the cost to manage the host files from all host desktop and servers?
I see no reason to not use DNS.

Wrong... Full advantage of Clusterware, because is not supported use GNS or SCAN without a DNS.

Suggestions for document scanning program/workflow

I am in need of a program/workflow for scanning a variety of mixed text/image media, including books, government and financial documents, university assignments, etc., which will at minimum allow one to crop and adjust the bitonal threshold, and produce djvubind files with OCR data. I have originally used a custom bash script to implement a scanimage - GIMP - djvubind + tesseract workflow, but it was inconvenient and djvubind was buggy in integrating tesseract (despite sending a bug report that was resolved). I also tried scanimage - scantailor/scantailor-cli - djvubind + tesseract, but scantailor had editing limitations and of course the OCR bugs were still an issue. My latest approach is gscan2pdf, a program that does properly integrate with djvulibre and tesseract, but the program is very buggy and therefore painful to use on a regular basis - for example, I have to manually verify every page twice (since sometimes it does not invoke OCR on certain pages, and sometimes it does not export all pages to the djvu file).
Ideally, it would probably be possible to achieve the benefits of both automation and a plethora of editing capabilities, while reducing redundancy, by some sort of GIMP plugin/extension. Any ideas?

I do have a few more suggestions that we can try.
If you have a firewall or anti virus protection running, try disabling them and reboot the computer. Once the computer is back on, attempt to use the Solution Center again.
If you are still having issues, try running the HP Print and Scan Doctor.

Services or components or whatever you want to call them. They are a way to organize your application into logical pieces, each of which has a properly defined role and offers functionality. They likely used the term service rather than component as service-oriented architectures (SOA) are in fashion. (Tho, again, thinking of them as components really is the same thing, just a choice of words).

You understand that you generally will wire together (dependency injection) your beans (java objects) with either annotations or Spring's XML format, right? If not, proceed back to step one of their tutorial.

That is one way to do it, yes. You would refer to another bean that was either component-scanned with the appropriate annotation or a bean already defined in that or another XML file that has been included.
However, there are basically four types of injection: field (via annotations), method parameters (via annotations), method setters (via annotations or XML) and constructors (via annotations or XML).

Hello. I would download the free app called HP Printer Control. This should work with your printer as it is the Officejet 4620e-all in one printer that you own. Some of the features of this app are the scanning to email using your mobile device's default email application. There are other great scanning features like interactive scan too. A full list of the app's benefits and features are listed under the description of the app along with a list of eligible printers if you have other products you would like to use it with. Go to your App Store on the iPad and search for either "HP" or specifically "HP Printer Control". Then Download and follow the instructions to register it. Scanning for viruses on Mac

I'm interested in scanning for viruses, not to protect my Mac but to avoid sending them to others. I've read a little about ClamXav and would like to hear from those of you who have used it. I don't want to run it continuously, but instead do a periodic system scan. Is it suitable to use like this? Any tips, benefits, or drawbacks you can tell me about? Thanks.

I am certainly not trying to dissuade you from helping others (I try to do that myself). However, anyone who runs a Windows box without A/V software, firewall(s), moats, and boiling oil on the ramparts is asking for it. The only way you would send a virus out would be an E-mail. If you open a web site that has a Windows virus it will not harm your Mac or go anywhere else - unless you download it and then E-mail it.
A/V software is, IMHO, a complete waste of time and resources for anyone running a Mac with OSX.
Sorry for the sermon, but I cannot imagine a Windows user without robust A/V software. In my former professional life, we ran Wintel boxes and had everything (including barbed wire) to pick off viruses. My IT people used to produce a report detailing how many viruses they intercepted and deactivated.

You have to purchase the games & the sub in the same transaction for the 20% to come off automatically. I think it takes up to 48 hours for the discount to apply correctly from that point on but you can always show your receipt for a manual adjustment in-store. I think there maybe a way to get the 10% bump on trade ins too not sure how though.
Make sure they scan or enter you mybb info during the subscription purchase otherwise you could have issues if you have more than 1 mybb account.

Oracle 11g new features notes as found on web very generic
if i want to convince my client to switch from oracle 10g to oracle 11g,this information will not be useful
if you had migrated to 11g and worked on it,please reply practical reasons from dba point of view
how customer will be benefited from migrating from oracle 10 g to 11g
like if i mentioned to him ADR feature it doesnt makes sense to him
Active dataguard may be one of feature but will be have any benefit where dataguard is implemented
still to application guys also it will give any advantage
say for example i am discussing this with Application team head ,how will he benefit from migrating to 11g
what feature will be benefitted to him and how
will this feature will be appealing enough to efforts in migration

In my opinion, the best way to convince them is to do an assessment for their particular environment, based on the specifics.
For example, I've done such one for a database and here are some of the points:
1. Almost 30%(as reported by Grid Control) of frequently executed queries are on tables like XX.XXXX and YY.YYYYY. These tables are relatively small and statements , and functions on them are good candidates for modification to use :
Query Results Cache and PL/SQL Function Result Cache (Oracle 11G Enterprise Edition option, no extra cost needed).
2. From time to time we experience sudden execution plan changes and get worse plans. This degrades applications' performance orders of magnitude. Oracle 11g has a new built-in feature called "SQL Plan Management". As described in the docs:
"SQL plan management prevents performance regressions resulting from sudden changes to the execution plan of a SQL statement by providing components for capturing, selecting, and evolving SQL plan information. If you are performing a database upgrade that installs a new optimizer version, it can result in plan changes for a small percentage of SQL statements, with most of the plan changes resulting in either no performance change or improvement. However, certain plan changes may cause performance regressions.
With SQL plan management, the optimizer automatically manages execution plans and ensures that only known or verified plans are used. When a new plan is found for a SQL statement, the plan is not used until it has been verified by the database to have comparable or better performance than the current plan. This means if you seed SQL plan management with your current (pre-11g) execution plan, which will become the SQL plan baseline for each statement, the optimizer uses these plans after the upgrade. If the 11g optimizer determines that a different plan should be used, the new plan is queued for verification and will not be used until it has been confirmed to have comparable or better performance than the current plan."
I don't expect this to be perfect but at least it will decrease the number of such problematic periods.
3. 10g Recovery Manager doesn't support parallelism per datafile. In our environment we have several 30+GB datafiles and since our storage system is not very fast for such type of operations, non-parallel restore of a single datafile will take much more time compared to the same activity on 11g. 11g supports RMAN datafile restore in parallel.
4. Several optimizations in optimizer work. One of them is better handling of full scans:
We've done some tests 10g/11g and were surprised because of this direct path read/db file scattered reads thing. Our tests are:
Two databases - one 11g and one 10g with same sga_target,sga_max_size(500MB) and pga_aggregate_target(200MB), everything else is as it is set during install by DBCA. These two databases run on one host.
The storage is a NAS(6 discs) managed by 11g ASM (one normal redundancy diskgroup ) which is used by the databases.
I imported a 3GB table on every database and gathered stats. To not go in detail as of now, the results are:
three consecutive runs on 11g.
average execution time - 50 seconds
three consecutive runs on 10g.
average execution time - 125 seconds
The statement is:
select /*+ full(t) nocache(t) */ count(1) from zz.zzz t;
and there is no other activity on the host and the storage.
Same number of logical and physical reads during 11g and 10g runs.
During the above runs while run on:
11g, iostat reports ~14MB/s per disk
10g, iostat reports ~5MB/s per disk
After tracing these sessions we figured out that on 11g direct path read is used, while 10g uses db file scattered read.
5. We can use AUDIT_SYS_OPERATIONS in conjunction with XML,EXTENDED for auditing purposes. 10.2.0.4 has a bug for this that is fix in 11.1.0.6 onwards.
6. Database Resident Connection Pooling(Concepts guide 11g documentation)
"Database Resident Connection Pooling (DRCP) provides a connection pool in the database server for typical Web application usage scenarios. DRCP pools dedicated servers, which comprise of a server foreground combined with a database session, to create pooled servers.
A Web application typically acquires a database connection, uses the connection for a short period, and then releases the connection. DRCP enables multiple Web application threads and processes to share the pooled servers for their connection needs.
DRCP complements middle-tier connection pools that share connections between threads in a middle-tier process. DRCP also enables you to share database connections across multiple middle-tier processes. These middle-tier processes may belong to the same or different middle-tier host.
DRCP enables a significant reduction in key database resources that are required to support a large number of client connections. DRCP reduces the amount of memory required for the database server and boosts the scalability of both the database server and the middle-tier. The pool of readily available servers also reduces the cost of re-creating client connections.
DRCP is especially useful for architectures with multi-process, single-threaded application servers, such as PHP and Apache servers, that cannot do middle-tier connection pooling. The database can scale to tens of thousands of simultaneous connections with DRCP."
It will help us to improve dedicated server usage(currently we use shared server).
7. A lot of bug fixes for bugs that don't have 10g patches , fixed in 11g only and affect us - examples XML,EXTENDED and AUDIT_SYS_OPERATIONS bug, FGA bugs, job system on logical standby database , "ORA-12569: TNS:packet checksum failure" during sqlplus login and so on.
It's for sure that there are much more such convincing points, but a several days assessment will make it possible to identify the most important ones from performance/availability/security perspective for their environment. As it is often the case - the devil is in the details. It's all about the way they use the database.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color MFP M575 - Can't scan from Windows

We recently purchased and installed an HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color MFP M575 to be used as a networked all-in-one solution for a number of offices. I have been able to get it set up on our network and have installed the appropriate drivers on the requested Windows 7 x64 machines, and network printing works perfectly. However, it seems that despite the fancy scanning features available from the all-in-one itself (scan to email, scan to a network folder, etc.), I can't find any way to do an old-fashioned scan from Windows.
I have installed the full software solution available on the driver download page for the device, and while Windows lists the device as a "Multi Function Printer; Scanner" it does not recognize it as an actual scanner. The built-in Windows Fax and Scan simply reports that no scanners are installed. The software installation did not include the HP Solution Center (which I am used to seeing from my experience with various other HP all-in-one devices) or any equivalent for direct scanning. The driver download page for the device does not include any separate scanning drivers, so I can't be certain if they were included with the full installation or exist at all.Some of our staff also use Adobe Acrobat to scan, and even that fails to recognize the MFP as a scanner.
We'll eventually be setting up the device to scan directly to a network folder, but we need a fallback while IT takes their time getting it set up; I can't imagine that the simplest option is not available at all. I must be missing something here, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: To add, I also ran the HP Print and Scan Doctor. Interestingly, it reports the device as a printer and only offers to "Fix Printing" without any sort of resolution for my scanning problem.

There is no change to this problem after 6 months since the last post. Put simply, and as stated in the previous posts, there is no way to scan a document and receive the image on your PC. If you are working with graphics for any length of time or want to create an image for inclusion as an image in a document or web page using this piece of equipment will not allow you to do so.
Great shame as every other function works well - it cannot be beyond the wit of HP to include a Windows application that enables you to scan an image, receive it in the software you are using at the time (e.g. Outlook, Word, Photoshop...) and use it in your work.
HP Printers several years older than this £1000+ Enterprise printer were able to do this simple job and have done so for a great many years. Just being able to use Microsoft's Fax and Scan would be start.
