Benefits of using POP mail service on Iplanet server over others

I feel unclear about what you're really asking; is it the benefits of the iPlanet POP service as opposed to other POP-enabled mail server products, or is it the benefits of POP as opposed to the IMAP and Webmail services in the iPlanet messaging server you're looking for?

  • Using POP Mail With Two Macs?

Is it possible to use two Macs with Apple Mail? I use Mail on my iMac, and I would like to set it up on my PowerBook as well. The only problem is accessing the same mail on both computers. It seems like if I were to open a message, it would store it on the respective computer that I open it with, and I would not be able to access it with the other. Is it possible to set it up where I can see the same messages on both? I use GMail. Thanks.

Like Kappy said, it's a hassle if you are using pop mail. But no problem with imap because the "master" copy is always maintained on the imap server, and your two computers are, essentially, nothing more than mirror sites.
I don't know if GMail is pop or imap.
What you would have to do for a pop account is set up account prefs to leave message on server after downloading on at least one of the computers, if not both of them. If you do that with both, I expect you will be hearing from your pop provider real soon about excessive disk space use. If you only do it to one computer, make sure that it is the one you will always be downloading mail from first. Plus, I can't remember whether that would cause multiple copies to download or not, on subsequent mail checks, when mail is left on server; it has been so long since I have had to play that game with pop servers.
Again, imap is no problem, because imap was designed to address this very problem.

  • After HD crash and reload of both Gmail and Thunderbird using POP mail as before now, randomly some messages on the Gmail server do not move to Thunderbird.

I think it's all said above. Always have used POP mail for moving my Gmail to Thunderbird and it worked flawlessly. Now seemingly random emails rec'd into Gmail server do not move to Thunderbird. Most do, some don't and it seems so random.
I've checked every setting I know of and matched it exactly to the setup I have on another computer set up with the same POP mail/thunderbird setup, which continues to work flawlessly.
Any explanation other than switching to IMAP which I do NOT want to do?
    Win7 64, Dell XPS 15Z laptop
    Thanks is advance.

I think I found the solution christ1. I found some help using Thunderbird's Help function and I think the problem was the Google user name I entered while creating the account in Thunderbird. Somehow the user name I entered was just the first part of my Google email address without the @gmail.com. After adding that the problem ceased to occur. I have no idea how/why, but since I did it there has been no more problem. Thanks for your reply.

  • HT4864 Is there any way to use POP mail with iCloud?

Hi newbie here, so be kind!  Just trying to set up iCloud on my new iPad, my iPhone 3G and my oldish Windows PC running Vista.  I have managed to get the iPad and iPhone running relatively well, but the real reason I wanted to synch all my devices was because I am buried beneath all the emails that I receive each day and cleaning them off three devices was a real hassle (1st world prob I know).  My PC is running Windows mail because I couldn't get Yahoo mail to run on POP or IMAP settings. So I have been happily downloading Yahoo mail (via) POP into Windows mail for a few years now.  However I have hit an Apple Support doc saying that I cannot use POP settings in iCloud (if you know what I mean), I have to use IMAP.  Can anyone help me with what settings I need to put in Windows Mail to make it sync with the mail client on my phone and iPad?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Gmail and all POP systems are not iCloud mail. iCloud mail ends with @mac, @me or @icloud.com, Gmail and POP systems are not handled by iCloud mail systems.

  • Can SSL cert be used in Mail Services?

    Hello,
Can I use SSL server cert for Apache in Mail services, or must I use S/MIME certs? Anything that I must be aware when buying the S/MIME cert for 10.6 Mail Services?
    Thanks alot!

    Thanks very much!!!
Do you know which port(s) external mail client will use to get the cert from the Mail Server during handshake? My preliminary testing shows the mail client gets the cert via 443, and therefore it is getting another cert from my supposedly web server!
My set up in brief :
Airport Extreme acts as the gateway, load distributed by port no. to multiple servers, each handling a different service, and each has a different internal IP address. The external DNS service provided by DynDNS has 2 CNAME entries (one is www.servername.com, another is mail.servername.com) both pointing to the same fixed IP address.

  • Load 25 more messages...Using POP mail account

I have comcast internet, and I'm having problems with my iPhone mail.
At first, I had no problems, I received mail with no problem.
I didn't change anything, so I don't know how this problem started.
I click on Mail, it checks for mail, and all it says is "Load 25 more messages.."
I'll click on that, it then says "Loading 25 more messages..." but nothing happens.
    Its just stops.
I have searched and searched for answers, but to no avail.
    Thanks.

I called Apple. The tech support guy was very helpful. I was on the phone with him for over a half-hour.
He had me (and I'm not sure why I didn't do this myself) do a reset.
Hold the Home button and the on/off button at the same time.
I did it twice, and now my Comcast POP mail works great.
    Thanks for all the replies.

  • TS3103 Using Pop Mail; not receiving or sending emails

For some reason my PoP mail is not working even though everything says connected. I have had several friends send me "test" emails and nothing is coming through for the past couple of days.  Furthermore they are not receiving my emails even though the mail shows "sent."

It's possible you need to login and change your passwords. The recent Heartbleed bug has required many users to change their passwords. Regardless it's a good idea to change your passswords at least once a year for security.
Open the Connection Doctor under Window when Mail is active.
You should see green lights to show accounts are connected.
You will see two entires for most accounts. One for sending (SMTP) and the other for receiving. iCloud accounts only show up as one entry.
If you see a red light you can select to Show Details button to find why you are having problems connecting.
Receiving is set in the main window for the account. Change your password then click out of the account to save.
Sending password is set in Edit SMTP. Select the account from the list. Under Advanced, add the password.
Note, sometimes you will find extra SMTP settings listed. Deleting an account does delete the SMTP settings. You can delete these.

  • NO INCOMING POP MAIL from exchange 2003 server.-

My university uses a exchange 2003 server for mail and pop access is enabled on all professor accounts. Since a couple of weeks ago I had no problem at all with my university mail account on apple mail, although I had to use :
    incoming mail server: "mail.myuniversity.edu.do"
    user: "DOMAIN\username"
    Password: "mypassword"
    Authentication: Password
After december the 5th I'm not getting any mail at all, even thou the activity monitor says "incoming messages.... 83 of 83" but no message shows up on the inbox. I have noticed that the number keeps growing (84, 85, 86...) but still no message in my inbox.
the weird thing is that I'm able to see my university mail in my iphone using the synced account settings in Itunes. I thought it was a problem of my machine I have made a clean format and reinstall of osX 10.6 with the 10.6.2 combo update. I did not transfered files nor configuration, just copied my documents and reconfigured mail from scratch. I did not imported any message. After all that, the problem persist.
I have used Connection Doctor and everything looks ok. The Detail window shows this:

  • Mail service in windows2003 server

i have old server has windows 2003 server
i want to apply mails through this server
and i did that but my question
how can i connect between external mail and internal mail
how can i create distribute list
    how can i backup mails

    Hi Alaa,
The Windows 2003 email service is just a IIS component for email relay\routing SMTP service. You can't have distribution list or backup emails as such. (You need to use Exchange Server for those premium features and control). Its just a SMTP Gateway service.
Typically, the following folder is the queue folder, which can be backedup if you like to:
    %SystemDrive%\inetpub\mailroot\queue
    SMTP Server Setup (IIS 6.0)
(SMTP) service provided by IIS is a simple component for delivering outgoing
e-mail messages. Delivery of a message is initiated by transferring the message
to a designated SMTP server. Based on the domain name of the recipient e-mail
address, the SMTP server initiates communications with a Domain Name System
(DNS) server, which looks up and then returns the host name of the destination
    SMTP server for that domain.
Next, the originating SMTP server communicates with the destination SMTP
server directly through Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
on port 25. If the user name of the recipient e-mail address matches one of the
authorized user accounts on the destination server, the original e-mail message
is transferred to that server, waiting for the recipient to pick up the message
    through a client program.
In the case where the originating SMTP server cannot communicate directly
with the destination server, the SMTP service can transfer messages through one
or more intermediate relay SMTP servers. A relay server receives the original
message and then delivers it to the destination server, or redirects it to
another relay server. This process is repeated until the message is delivered or
    a designated timeout period passes.

  • Using Mac Mail to view Exchange server account

So my iPhone 3GS has no difficulty syncing e-mails, contacts, calendars from my workplace exchange server, but I can't sync these same workplace e-mails, contacts, etc... with Mac Mail on my home computer. My computer apparently can't recognize the exchange server account, and the IT guy at work says that you can only sync phones to our work server, not home computers. Does that make sense? Or am i just not setting up Mac Mail properly (something like changing the Port #?). I guess I just don't understand how phones can sync but computers can't...
Any help would be much appreciated.

In the world of Microsoft Exchange, that makes sense. iPhones use a network technology called Active Sync, which is designed for mobile devices. Mail uses Exchange Web Services which has more functionality.
If your Exchange server supports a third technology called IMAP, then you can configure Mail to use that instead of EWS.

  • MobileMe and Using POP mail access

    Hi guys and girls
I currently use .Mac with Mail and have set up Mail to access .Mac email using the POP.
I assume that MobileMe and it's push eMail feature is based on IMAP but it doesn't actually state what settings we need to use.
Does anyone know? Should I set up my Mail.app to use the IMAP in readiness for MobileMe?
Any help or guidance you can give would be greatly appreciated!

  • How Do I Increase The Speed Of Sending Emails Using The Mail Service on my Mac Mini Server?

Note: This is the first time I have set up a mail server.
I have a Ruby on Rails application where I am currently sending approx. 240 individual emails with the potential of more being sent each week as more people add themselves to our mailing list.  I am sending them invidually in order to personalize the emails and to hopefully prevent my emails being falsely identified as spam.
The GoDaddy email address I was using in my Rails application has a daily limit of sending 250 emails each day.  With our mailing list fastly approaching 250 I decided to set up an email address on my Mac Mini Server using Mountain Lion (OS X Server).  The email address was set up to be stored locally at the advice of Apple Enterprise Support.  This email address will not be used in an email program.  It will only be used in all my Rails applications.
My emails send properly but take almost 10 seconds an email.  When I use the same software with GoDaddy's email address the emails take about eight minutes to send.  With the email address I created it takes about 41 minutes.  The difference seems to have to do with the sacl_check being done.  Here is an example of what I see for each email in mail.log.
    Mar 14 11:06:50 hostname.domain1.com postfix/qmgr[45322]: 4B2C5603D25: removed
    Mar 14 11:06:59 hostname.domain1.com postfix/smtpd[99464]: sacl_check: mbr_user_name_to_uuid([email protected]) failed: No such file or directory
There is 9-10 seconds that elapses when the sacl_check.  If I subtract this difference the remaining time is almost the time that the GoDaddy email takes to send the same number of emails.
The link below is a post about the sacl_check.  I was looking at the comments by powercore from Germany at the comments where settings in /etc/postfix/main.cf are discussed.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3241121?start=0&tstart=0
Will making these setting changes speed up the sending of the emails from my Mail Server or is there something else I can check?

  • I am using POP mail account and want to know how to set up folders in mail..?

I am using my iPad 2 to check emails. I want to save some in another folder, however I am unable to do so...! Any suggestions on setting up extra folders for POP email accounts?

Hi Matt, Thank you for getting back to me. I thought as much after reading that only IMAP (ie my Gmail Account) may be able to have folders. The only problem is that my Primary email account is POP and have had it for more that fifteen years plus, and the Gmail account is more for backup and for MobileMe/iCloud.......! Disappointed though, as I thought the iPad2  would replace my laptop (not my desktop) at least......! Cheers, Paul.

  • TS3276 PostBox and iCloud - does anyone use pop mail for postbox and icloud? i can't seem to use my MAC pop mail with postbox.

Apple policy of reseting each time you forget an Account ID or Password makes it impossible for me to keep track of my many accounts on Mail. I decided to use PostBox and it's working great except for one account.  That account is linked to icloud.  I'm not too happy with icloud, in general, but I do want to be able to track my mail on my iphone for that one account (my business account).  It used to be that I could use 2 accounts with one - using an alias.  Now, I can't do that with icloud, nor can I get it linked to PostBox.  Does anyone know what I should do? Am I asking the wrong questions?

I am now on Chapter 3 & 4 -  Since this is the ONLY message board I can get into,
& Roger, No, I never had a "mobile me account", if that's a cell phone - wouldn't own one! - IF it was from the Old Tiger mail Ap, I do believe it was discontinued, when they came out with Snow Lion, no? So that's defunct.  FYI I got my first computer in 1991 - DOS, good stuff, easy to fix. My first mac in 2006 Tiger, great stuff, loved it. Then Snowleopard, not sure when, maybe '09? it was just before Lion came out, didn't know the new one would come so soon. & in June 2012, first mac crashed, lost a year "unsaved" data.
Q # 1. I can't get into My Account - to get into support & any questions! Somehow all my data is messed up, & I've had to change passwords 3 times today every time I'm "rejected" by my account. I seem to have 3 accounts now, each with a different name Password, & Security Questions! & I've been rejected due to: "Incorrect ID name", "Incorrect Password" & because whatever - doesn't" recognize my birth date" / or "my Security question answers" that I chose - all of which I know are correct. AGUH!
    My latest problems:
    1) Can you Unzip iPhotos, uploaded from a USB or External Drive (after my SL crashed)? The dpi for these old ones is about 250 x 360 (88 KB) compared to 2448 x 3264 (2.6 MB) for recent ones.
    - Do you need a program to do this? Some say there's a "free" program, any good? Can unzip be done to many or 1 at a time? Or is there something I haven't found in iPhoto '11, 9.2.1 (Lion)?
[I now buy new Camera Memory cards & don't delete the photos anymore, since I lost so many.]
    2) Can I combine all 3 of my Apple ID info - or at least delete that 4 year old Email address in my profile? (IF I can ever get in. I wrote a "suggestion" to the Apple folks, who said my new Email was on it, & they'd send me an email - but I never got it, guess it went to the old one?

  • Deleted pop mail not deleted from server

mail retrieved from pop acct & deleted, and trash emptied, is not deleted from server, so it gets re-retrieved.
settings>delete from server> when removed from inbox, but the msgs are still on the server as viewed from the isp's web interface.

    been there, done that;-}
    Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.verizon.net
    Incoming Server Port Numbers: 995
    Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.verizon.net
    Outgoing Server Port Numbers: 465
it seems mail.app is designed for imap, in that msgs can't be deleted when d/l'd by default, but must be config'd "when moved from inbox"
