Benefits of using Segments??

Hi All,
We are planning to use segments for one of our scenarios... As per my understanding segments can be derived from profit center...but i want to understand wat purpose does segment serves? We already have the functionality of Business Areas...
So i just wanted to understand what benefits segments offer over Business Area.
Thanks and regards,
Ankur

Hello
Check this
Segment
Definition
Division of a company for which you can create financial statements for external reporting.
Use
The accounting principles US GAAP and IFRS require companies to perform segment reporting. You can define segments in your SAP system for this purpose. You find the appropriate IMG activity in Customizing under Enterprise Structure ® Definition ® Financial Accounting ® Define Segment.
You can enter a segment in the master record of a profit center. The characteristic Segment is only released in combination with the characteristic Profit Center. If no segment is specified manually during posting (only possible for transactions in Financial Accounting), the segment is determined from the master record of the profit center. This profit center can also be assigned manually or derived.
If you want to apply different rules to derive the segment during posting, you can define your own rules for this. You find the corresponding settings in Customizing under Financial Accounting (New) ® Financial Accounting Global Settings (New) ® Tools ® Customer Enhancements ® Business Add-Ins (BAdIs) ® Segment Derivation.
The document splitting procedure is the prerequisite for creating financial statements at any time for the Segment dimension. For this, you need to set up a zero balance setting for the Segment characteristic. You find the document splitting settings in Customizing under General Ledger Accounting (New) ® Business Transactions ® Document Splitting.
Structure
US GAAP and IAS set out different requirements regarding segment reporting:
US GAAP requires a virtually complete balance sheet at the segment level for segment reporting (essentially everything apart from stockholders' equity). The segment is defined as a subarea of a company with activities that generate expenses and revenues, with an operating result that is regularly used by management for profit assessment and resource allocation purposes, and for which separate financial data is available.
You can use the Segment dimension to represent the segment levels.
IAS requires for segment reporting primary and secondary segmentation, which have different reporting depth. A distinction is made between the following types of segment:
·        Business segment
A business segment is a distinguishable subactivity of a company that relates to the manufacture of a product or the provision of a service and that has risks and revenues that differ from those in other business segments.
·        Geographical segment
A geographical segment is a distinguishable subactivity of a company that relates to the manufacture of a product or the provision of a service within a specific field of business. The risks and revenues of a geographical segment differ from the subactivities in other fields of business.
You can choose which segment type you want to have as the primary or the secondary segmentation. You can use the Segment dimension for the primary segmentation. You can represent the secondary segmentation in your system. You can do this by including a user-defined field Region in your general ledger accounting, for example.

  • Re-using Segments Created via API or Re-creating Every Time?

    Hi All,
Wanted to get your thoughts on this...
We have been able to create Segments via the API, however, which way to go:
OPTION 1: Re-use Segment if there are no additions or deletions (changes) to the list? or
OPTION 2: Re-create the Segment every time via API.
In Option 1, we will still need to compare the existing list to the new list before deciding to re-use. However, the comparison will be done outside of Eloqua.
In Option 2, we may create a new list even though there are no changes but we will have the historical data and it will be easier to identify lists.
In both scenarios, data processing may affect performance.
For those who have done this or are familiar, what would you recommend?
    Hope it's clear.
    Pinging: TJ Fields-Oracle, 1065474, freejung
    Thanks!!

In simpler terms of creating assets and storage, creating new segments each time should not be a problem. That said, the asset choosers might end up being slow if you're blowing past 100k which will ultimately result in a poor user experience for the marketers. Please see:
    Eloqua Product Thresholds
Beyond that, you should also consider:
    - Developers creating a process where segments and campaigns are being created automatically, and the campaigns being left active for a long time with segments are set to run every hour. For static lists, it wouldn't really result in heavy calculating but you can run into delayed contact entry into campaigns if you have hundreds of segments feeding hundreds of campaigns - each with heavy filtering. At best it would be pointless to run segments (on the canvas) hourly if the lists are static, and at worst you're making everything slower. That doesn't sound like a major concern here but something to keep in mind.
    - API tools automatically updating segments which are currently referenced in live campaigns (again, running hourly segments). This means if you re-use assets for new campaigns there is a risk that they're being referenced by a currently live campaign and you end up adding the wrong contacts to the wrong flow. Since segments share a relationship to campaigns as their primary contact feeder, the API tools should only be updating the same segment asset with new contacts if the intent is to add those contacts to an existing campaign.
    - Although keeping shared lists or segments untouched gives you some historical tracking, do not assume the contacts in those assets are exactly the same ones which were used when the campaign was launched. For example, if you delete the bouncebacks and unsubscribes after the campaign has run and go back to your segment, even if it is a simple segment with a local list, it will not contain the deleted contacts. For any serious auditing task, let the API tool archive what contacts were added to what segment. Then you can use Bulk 2.0 activity exports to keep a list of what contacts received what emails from various campaigns.

  • Wiki or Robohelp - What are the benefits of using a wiki vs publishing projects in robohelp?

What are the benefits of using a wiki vs publishing projects in robohelp? I currently use RH9/RH9 Server and  publish multiple SSL.  The company is looking to stop using Robohelp and replace our online help authoring tool  (RH) with a wiki. Are there any benefits of going to a wiki environment.  What RH features/functions that I have today will i not have by having IT import our robohelp files into a wiki?
I know that a wiki is not an authoring tool, but someone must think it is and we'll still have all the functionality of publishing multiple SSLs, reports, etc once in the wiki environment.  Any comments - is this the best route?

    Hi,
There are many differences. The idea of a wiki is to allow anyone to view and/or edit the content. Depending on the wiki system, you can set access control for viewing and editing.
Wiki's typically have simple syntax (html in a wiki is a serious security risk), allow image embedding, links and attachments. You will need to learn the specific syntax (rather easy, but also very limited).
What will you lose? This depends on the features available in the wiki system as well as the available plugins. A few downsides:
    - WYSIWYG editor limited, if at all.
    - No snippets
    - No variables
    - Dropdowns (may be possible through plugins)
    - Index
    - Styling based on css classes (mostly supported through HTML which is a security concern)
    - Only one version of your support system: multiple versions require multiple installations/configurations.
    - No searching in attachments.
    - No CBT (Though some wiki's allow comments in the wiki code)
    - No Word/FrameMaker import.
    - You have to create your own CSH calls.
    On the upside:
    - Most wiki systems are free, even for commercial use.
    - The syntax is quite simple, allowing you to quickly write text.
    - Wiki's typically offer good support for syntax highlighting.
    - They are very easy to set up.
    - Most wiki's have plugins to enable comments.
The greatest downside in my opinion is that you always have the latest version of all files. Whenever you update a page, everyone immediately has the latest version. And if you want to create help for a feature that isn't released yet, you will have to use access control to make sure not everyone sees the (unfinished) help for the unreleased feature. With RoboHelp you have a single source that creates a one way output.
We use both RoboHelp and wiki's: RoboHelp for customer help and wiki internally to share knowledge. And sharing knowledge is what wiki's are designed for.

    Willam

Action     Increase the size of the SGA by setting the parameter "sga_target" to 5120 M.One of the biggest impact of indexes (if they fit in the scenario) is in reducing the IO (by avoiding full table scans). Reduced IO means faster system. Absence of indexes would mean that you read lots of data into the memory [buffer cache] and data would flush out quickly too (to make space for the new data), resulting in more IO. So having indexes in place means you only read as much amount of data as required and frequently accessed data stays in the memory.
Kinda incomplete answer...Lets wait for other experts' comments :)

  • Benefits of using vendor partner function

    Hello Experts:
I understand the general use of vendor partner function. But what are the benefits of using vendor partner function? Is it for ease of reporting? Is there a functionality down the line that will not be possible if a vendor partner function is not used?
The reasoning for this question is, I am at a client that has the general association of vendor and remit to addresses. However, they also have a scenario where they have one main vendor, but there are 30+ remit to addresses. These remit to addresses are dependent on the plant that placed the order. As an example, the vendor is AT&T, but the plant that uses the service in Caifornia sends the check to a remit to address in Calif. The plant in Arizona, sends their check to another AT&T remit to address in AZ.
My current solution is, for the client to create the partner function that are more straight forward, one main vendor and one remit to address. As for the vendors that have multiple remit to addresses, i am opting out not to create the partner function. Which is why I am asking if there is an issue not using vendor partner function.
Thanks in advance for your help!!

It is certainly possible to work without partner functions in SAP.
It is almost impossible  to work without partner functions in SAP if you do business with global players and need some comfort for your processes.
It is impossible to work without partner functions if oyu have to do Intrastat reporting with SAP and your goods supplier is located in a different EU country than your vendor.
In your special case with AT&T without partner functions, you would enter the invoice to your main vendor, the payment run then creates a cheque to your main vendor (and you then use Microsoft word to create a lable with the remit to address that you stick over the SAP printed address on the cheque ..... how does Finance department know that it has to create this lable?.....how will you be able to trace who got the cheque? ..........this is not a good practice)
Especially in this case the partner funtions gives the real benefit.
partner funtions are not for ease of reporting, as You cannot run analyses for any of the other partner roles supplied in the standard system.
if you use invoicing party, then  the invoicing partyu2019s account will be charged instead of the vendoru2019s.

  • Benefits of using RMAN

I've not used RMAN before and am still kind of new to Oracle and I have a question about using RMAN.
We currently have all our databases on SAN and NAS and everynight they are put into hot backup mode and the SAN and NAS take snapshots of them.
We also do a full export everynight.
Given this setup what if any benefits would I see in replacing either or both methods with RMAN backups ?
    Thanks.

I advice you to refer to a [documentation |http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/toc.htm] and to an excellent book " [RMAN Recipes for Oracle Database 11g : A Problem-Solution Approach|http://www.amazon.com/RMAN-Recipes-Oracle-Database-Problem-Solution/dp/1590598512] "
Here's some RMAN benefits from that book :
Here’s a brief description of the important benefits of using RMAN instead of usermanaged backup and recovery techniques:
    * You can take advantage of the powerful Data Recovery Advisor feature, which enables you to easily diagnose and repair data failures and corruption (Chapter 20 discusses the Data Recovery Advisor).
    * There are simpler backup and recovery commands.
    * It automatically manages the backup files without DBA intervention.
    * It automatically deletes unnecessary backup datafiles and archived redo log files both from disk and tape.

  • How ADBC connection is benefits by using SAP HANA as secondary database ?

    Hi,
I have one more important question.
How ADBC connection is benefits by using SAP HANA as secondary database in terms of performance wise for the access of data from HANA database as a secondary database.
I have 2 options and which is better for the good performance for accessing the data-
1 .  In ABAP Reports in the SELECT statements by using CONNECTION (“HDB”) will this improve the
         performance.
e.g : select * from BSEG into TABLE IT_TAB CONNECTION (“HDB”).
    2. Will Create the Stored procedure in HANA studio and Call
from ABAP as below by using NATIVE SQL–
         EXEC SQL
          SET CONNECTION (‘HDB’).
         ENDEXEC.
        EXEC SQL.
          EXECUTE PROCEDURE proc (IN    p_in1
                                 OUT   p_out1   OUT   p_out2 )
       ENDEXEC.

    Hi Pravin,
Option 1: In this case ADBC might even worsen the performance due to the overhead in the ADBC framework. OpenSQL is the method to go here, as OpenSQL - from the ABAP point of view - features the optimal communication with the database while ADBC has overhead like constructor-calls for the statement, parameter binding, etc.
Option 2: In this case ADBC is comparable with EXEC SQL but features more options, e.g. clean concept of multiple connection (connection objects via CL_SQL_CONNECTION), exception handling, etc. So I strongly propose to favour ADBC over EXEC SQL, but not simply for performance reasons. You might have a look at the ABAP Language Help in your system on more information on ADBC and the advantages over Exec SQL.
    Cheers,

  • Benefits of using an RSL in an AIR application?

I understand the general benefits of using a RSL in a web-based application.  That is, when a RSL is not merged into the code, it provides a quicker download.  Also, a RSL can be edited without recompiling the main application.  I am correct so far?
But my main question is what benefits does a RSL serve when it is used in an AIR application?  The RSL would be downloaded when they initiate the AIR installer, so the “quick” download benefit wouldn’t be available.  The only benefit I see, and please correct me if you see any other, is if a developer is using a RSL instead of directly embedding an asset into the code to provide a quicker compile time, eg:
    <mx:Button label="Icon Button" icon="@Embed(source='c:/myapp/assets/logo.gif')"/>

ArchWiki wrote:Obviously, an external journal is only effective if the journal and its file system exists on separate physical devices.
That's the problem, I don't know if there's any benefit to having a separate journal partition on the same device, which all the other partitions use. Would localizing journal writes to one partition improve performance, or just create a single-point-of-failure hazard?

  • Newbie Question: Benefits of Using Book Document?

I have a novel in MS Word. I've seen that I can get greatly improved typography if I import it to InDesign.
I notice that InDesign has a Book document. I can put each chapter of my novel into individual .indd files, and then include each of these files in the Book document. So far so good.
My novel is only 266 pages long, including front and back matter. Would it be easier to just use one single .indd file?
In other words, what are the benefits of using the Book document?
Thanks very much in advance to all for any info.

Arïel's advice is spot-on.  I am adding some comments only for the benefit of the people who might find this thread in the future.
It's occasionally to my advantage to share out chapter files of a long doc in a Book file to a number of InDesign operators, so we can complete a large project collaboratively in a very short amount of time. Each time I look at myself in the mirror and say, "Would I rather use a Book file, or pull an all-nighter and do the whole thing myself?" I feel I've been pretty lucky, in that only once has a team-effort Book file project blown up in my face and required the all-nighter anyways - I spent the night rebuilding the Book file over and over again, trying to get it to paginate correctly.
To avoid any potential sluggishness, though, my only recommendation
would be to make sure that each chapter is in it's own story. Try to
avoid having the entire book threaded as a single, long, 200-page story
and you'll be alright. In fact, on my current computer (i5 with 8 GB
RAM) even that is no longer an issue.
This is absolutely true of your book, Vik. I've handled a variety of handbooks, manuals, and other kinds of document that had complicated formatting (tables and charts and dozens of text frames with variables and xrefs and No Break and etc.) at the end of the book - in those cases it was to my advantage to keep that complicated stuff in a separate story so that when I was re-ragging chapter 1, the stuff in Appendix B wasn't constantly re-flowing and bogging down my machine. But a novel? Any decent machine with specs like Ariel's could handle a longer story than that.
Oh, and I don't recall ever having an InDesign file go bad on me. Maybe I'm just lucky
Yup, you're lucky. OTOH, I bet that you don't have very many clients who revise their books 4x per year, who have been using the same file since PageMaker 5.0.

  • Benefits from using the MSI driver against the latest on my R4870 ?

    hi,
    Quote from: Stu
You don't always need the latest drivers installed
I am new to the forums and was thinking of OC'ing my video card MSI R4870 512M but before doing so I was wondering if there are any benefits from using the latest driver available at MSI site against the latest driver available from AMD site ?
    Code: [Select]
    MSI 23-07-2010 Version 8.723
    ATI 15-09-2010 Version 10.9
Also from your experience what would be a nice safe OC that this card would hold, I don't want to go overboard just increase it some more ? it is currently at GPU 500 and Memory 900

To answer 2nd part, you can attempt to match the factory OC version of the card. See 4870 OC specs > here < If you haven't done so yet download > Afterburner < from MSI.
4870~something doesn't look right, your GPU clock is way lower than any of the MSI 4870 cards shown on the Global website. From what I see core clock should be at least 750 for the 4870. Are you sure your core clock  is at 500 or is that a low power state for that card? does the speed go up under a load? I know speed of the NVIDIA cards drop very low under light load.
I'm pretty sure most people use the CCC drivers from AMD/ATI. If you're not having any problems that can be traced to drivers there's no need to bother with them.

  • HT204053 How does my spouse get the benefits of using my iCloud for contacts and calanders but not messages, etc?

How does my spouse get the benefits of using my iCloud for contacts and calanders but not messages, etc?

iCloud is designed for personal use and not for managing multiple access.  If you gives your password to someone else, this person can benefit everything including access to purchase with your account, email, etc.
You should rather consider having each one an iCloud account and then, create and share a calendar.  As for contact, you can send them to your spouse to be save in her account but they cannot be shared nor synced.

  • Getting Segment in the Asset Master ( Using SEGMENT Badi and not Prt Ctrs)

    Hi,
We need the field Segment to be populated in the Asset Master to get the correct P&L Statements ( The depreciation run, retirements etc to post to the Segments) . We are using the segment Badi: FAGL_DERIVE_SEGMENT to derive Segments and NOT the  Profit Centers
However, the field Segment missing in Asset Master (Class). The field segment is missing the Time Dependent view while creating the Asset Master Data. This is so because in the Configuration of Asset Accounting --> Integration with GL --> Additional Account
Assignment Objects is not showing the Segment field.
According to SAP help, I CAN DO THIS as mentioned
    http://help.sap.com/erp2005_ehp_05/helpdata/en/94/f13167dbae436a85a4a1d3ad75f274/frameset.htm
But, as mentioned in the SAP help link above, I am not able to find " Activate segment reporting in
Customizing for Asset Accounting under Integration with General
Ledger --> Accounting Segment Reporting --> Activate Segment Reporting"
Also, from another SAP Help link
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_crm700_ehp01/helpdata/en/fb/84a48d665e4fa9a2dc7b60adeb7c7d/frameset.htm
I found that activation of Business Function FIN_GL_REORG_1
or FIN_REP_SIMPL_3 could also get us the Segment Field in the Asset
    Master Data's Time Dependent Field
However, when I goto Transaction SFW5 - Change Business Function Statuswe are not able to find these Business Functions (FIN_GL_REORG_1
    or FIN_REP_SIMPL_3 )
    Regards
    KS

Hi, Activate segment reporting is available only in EHP5.
If you'renot using EHP5, then you can't to update segment as well as profit center in asset master data.
The only way is to put co objects in asset master data, and derive PC,segment based on this co objects
