BenQ 19" Widescreen FP92W - Incompatible?

Hello all.
I first saw this new BenQ 19" Widescreen monitor FP92W at a PC Show a shortwhile ago, and was interested to get it for my sis's new Mac mini soon...
See
http://benq.com.sg/products/LCD/?product=780&tid=12
But I was told that this monitor is incompatible with the Mac mini.
Is this true, I thought most DVI LCD monitors would be compatible, and as easy as just plugging in??
Anyone has experience using this monitor please let me know
Thanks and cheers

Well, your vendor could be right. While 1440 x 900 is certainly within the capability of the Mac mini, the crucial piece of information is whether BenQ has a well formed EDID inside their monitor. Many monitor manufacturers are stuck in an outmoded, PC-way of thinking where the driver comes with the monitor loaded on a CD. The Mac way of doing things is to use the DDC and get the driver information that way, via data communication over the video cable. A lot of manufacturers utterly fail to get this right. Especially guilty monitor makers in the past have been Acer, BenQ and Proview/Xerox. So your vendor could be right.
Will your vendor let you return it if it doesn' work? It sounds like you have a good relationship with them.

I was the one who posted it because that is what our Nvidia rep said. He said the Quadro 3800 would have the same
3 layer limit as the 285GTX due to the 1GB ram on both cards. If that is incorrect then the information they gave me was incorrect.
BTW I will forward them this thread and ask them why they informed me otherwise. Thank you for the heads up.
Oh one last thing. Nvidia and Adobe stated the limiter was put in place because of the 1GB Frame buffer size limited performance in CS5 and they could  only ensure performance with effect for 3 layers. If the Quadro FX 3800 is unlimited then that is completely false. Since the Quadro FX 3800 has a 260GPU in it and has 1/3 the ram bandwidth of a 285GTX then how does 1GB on the 285GTX require the limiter but the 1 GB Quadro card does not. This means Adobe is completely working with Nvidia to sell more Quadro FX cards and the limiter is a completely dishonest way to do it.
Note - After checking my email and speaking with my Adobe rep I changed the post. It was only our Nvidia rep that reported the limiter on both.

  • Insane.. in a good way

I am in the process of testing Red footage workflows in CS5 for an upcoming combined 35mm Film /Red project.
    I just made up a test project ( Preset Red 4K 25fps).
    I threw a 4k clip (RD3) on the timeline..then  two clips from a Canon 5D (movs 1920 x1080 HD) then two 720p (.mxf)..... plus two 4k titles
All stacked from large to small ....and then I applied random motion, opacity and fx at them all.
The yellow render bar never faltered and everything plays realtime.
    FREAKING INSANE.
Tip: I reduced 'Playback Resolution'  and 'Paused Resolution' to 1/2  for each because of the Red footage.  This was to ensure prompt / snappy playback from the Space Bar.   (The other footage would play back fine at Full and Full).  Whatever... 1/2 equals 2000 lines of Red playing back R/T.
This is SO insane... I am in MPE heaven and cant actually believe it.
BTW: My system is not even RAID based.

Shooternz - I too have the Asus P6T deluxe V2 mobo and 12 gigs of Ram - Corsair ddr3 1333.  Have you had any experience of the Ram detection in Bios not reporting correctly? Sometimes my bios will find 12, other times it may find 10, 8 or 6 gigs or Ram! I have tried running the CPU -Z utility and it reports that there are 12 gigs of Ram installed.  Did you do anything in the Bios to tweak your system? Any help appreciated.

  • Unable to export Quicktime after upgrade from Premiere 7.0 to 8.0 (2014) error "incompatible video codec in preset"

In the previous version of Premiere Pro (downloaded two months ago) I was able to export QuickTime files with preset HD 720p H.264.  It was very easy to do this in the previous version.
Upgraded to Premiere Pro 8.0 (2014), no when I attempt to export the same project with the same settings I see error message "incompatible video codec found in the preset. present load failed"
When I select Quicktime, the default preset appears as NTSC DV Widescreen 24p.   Attempted to export with this setting, result is a file that plays audio but no video.
System is Windows, tried two different computers, including one with Windows 8, same result. Tried Media Encoder, same result.
I searched the forums for an answer, the new features page lists these presets as available however they are not working for me.  Nothing else was changed on the computer, only the upgrade to Premiere 8.0 (2014)
How can I export Quicktime files in the new Premiere Pro?

Tech support helped me solve the issue - uninstall QuickTime and reinstall the newer version of QuickTime

  • Importing DV Widescreen from Sony HD Camcorder doesn't work

I bought iLife 06 yesterday. Today I started a new iMovie project and specified it was to be in DV Widescreen PAL. When I connected the camcorder (a Sony HDR-HC1E - the very same as the one that Steve Jobs used to demonstrate iMovie 06 at Macworld) it refused to import in widescreen and instead imported in normal (narrowscreen) DV. Consequently the picture is of course all squashed up. This process worked impeccably in the previous version of iMovie with the same camcorder.
When I spoke to Apple Care, after considerable research they said that this was an incompatibility problem. The camera is incompatible with iMovie 06. (I wonder how this can be when it was compatible with the previous iMovie AND is being demonstrated by Jobs himself.)
I should make clear that although the camcorder is HD-capable, I was actually recording in DV Widescreen (because the resulting file would otherwise be too big to put onto a DVD.)
I find it astonishing that Apple can release an upgrade which does not have the ability to do what its previous version did. Apple Care's advice was to uninstall iMovie 06, revert to the previous version and hope that an upgrade to iMovie 06 "might" solve the problem. What kind of help is this?

Well, I'm here in the US, using the NTSC version of the HC1. I don't have the problem you describe, in iMovie 5 or 6. But the settings on the camera are quite complex, so it could be a setting was wrong when you recorded, or when you capturing into iMovie. Using the english menus, you need to go like this on the camera, while in camera mode:
    P-Menu > Menu > Standard Set > DV Set > Wide Select
and make sure that's in 16:9 before you start taping anything.
Then to get it into iMovie, you have to force the iLink port to DV quality.
    P-Menu > Menu > Standard Set > VCR HDV/DV
    and chose DV.
I am able to capture 4:3 and 16:9 clips into either DV or DV Widescreen projects, and iMovie 6 correctly letterboxes/pillarboxes as needed.
You are using a "DV Widescreen" project, right?

  • Quicksilver G4 + Widescreen LCD DVI problem - VERY VERY WEIRD!

    Hi,
I bought a G4/867 Quicksilver off eBay. It came with Panther. I already have a 20.1" BenQ widescreen LCD.
I installed Tiger, then noticed the DVI display would fail (display strange blue/black artefacts or a 'fuzzy screen'. I have screenshots if anybody wants them. It is intermittent, and usually occurs after one of the following events:
    * powering on the computer
    * waking from sleep
    * switching from VGA (my pc) input to DVI (my mac) via the monitor
    I tested:
    * another video card (with native DVI): same problem
    * another computer (Mac mini): no problem
    * VGA: no problem
I returned the unit and got another. I ran Panther on it for a week with no problems. I just upgraded to Tiger. All the problems above are now happening again. It happened both on 10.4.0 and 10.4.6 (i.e. pre and post update).
If anyone has any experience at all in this, please post here or let me know if you need more info.
    G4 Quicksilver 867   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   20.1" BenQ Widescreen LCD

Sorry, forgot to mention it is independent of screen resolution.
Native screen res is 1680x1050. And it works perfectly sometimes, just not reliably. Have tried at 1024x768, 1280x1024, 640x480 and replicated the fault on all of them.
It also happens at startup, which made me think hardware. But it could be as the OS display drivers are loading. The fact that it worked with Panther makes me think software.
    Images available:
    http://www.geekhut.com/mac1.jpg
    http://www.geekhut.com/mac2.jpg
If it doesn't fail, the screen looks perfect. The same screen also works with a PC and other macs.
To clarify, the G4 is using an ADC-->DVI converter, but fault in this has been eliminated by:
    - using the same converter with another dvi monitor (no problem)
    - installing a native dvi graphics card in the g4 (same problem)

  • Can Pismo do 1366x768 on a widescreen TV?

I am about to get a widescreen TV, one of the many models that does 1366x768.
Currently I have a PowerBook G3 FireWire (Pismo) connected to an old CRT TV via composite video (simple RCA cable), purely for slide shows and web video. Of course, the Pismo can feed it 512x384, 640x480, and 1024x768 over that cable. But when I get the new TV, it will want 1366x768. The Pismo predates widescreen TVs, so does anyone know for certain whether the Pismo will be able to feed the TV that resolution through the Pismo's VGA port? If not natively, can the Pismo do it through SwitchResX?
If not, I'll probably have to wait until I get my MacBook Pro, so that I can move my current PowerBook G4 into the home entertainment center, replacing the Pismo. I assume the PowerBook G4 can do 1366x768 through DVI>HDMI.

    network,
I have little help to offer, but these are the resolutions the Pismo supports:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58344
Below is a thread I archived in 2006 with some helpful information regarding this subject.
    Kenichi Watanabe
The connector in the back is a VGA connector, so you cannot use any displays that are digital only (like Apple's). But VGA analog input LCD displays are plentiful and actually cheaper. You can get displays that are both analog and digital.
I'm not sure about the widescreen format. That format did not exist when Pismo's were designed. I have a 21-inch CRT that is sometimes attached to my Pismo, and I can get it up to 1600x1200. If you get a standard 17-inch or 19-inch (not widescreen) LCD, they are normally 1280x960 (a very common resolution), and that resolution works on the external video port. You can use it as a desktop extension (display spanning) or as the only display.
Hopefully, if the widescreen format works, someone here can confirm it. It would be unfortunate if you paid the extra cost to get one and you had "black bars" along the sides. Maybe you can take your Pismo to CompUSA (or your local mega store) and ask to try it with the on-display model.
    Kenichi Watanabe
The connector in the back is regular VGA. Most VGA monitors come with a cable. If you try one at a store, the monitor you are trying should have a cable. So, I don't think you need to buy one, and it doesn't need to be a "dual" anything, at least for using with a Pismo.
I just checked with my Pismo connected to my 21-inch CRT. If you make the external display the only display, it will go up to 1600x1200 at millions of colors. In fact, it goes up to 1792x1344, but at thousands of colors (but I don't think you'll find any LCDs at that resolution. This is with Mac OS X 10.9.
Looking at some 19-inch (and 17-inch) displays on Amazon, they are at 1280x1024. A 21-inch non-widescreen LCD is at 1600x1200. Now that would be like having a widescreen with some extra top and bottom space.
    Kenichi Watanabe
Yes. I was just using the System Preferences Displays panel. I put the Pismo to sleep and closed the "lid" and woke it up to disable the built-in LCD. This allows the external to be at 1600x1200 and millions of colors. I believe the refresh rate was 75 Hz. It can get to 1600x1200 with monitor spanning (built-in display on), but the external display goes to thousands of colors.
Perhaps under Mac OS 9, 1280 x 1024 is the max. Hope the widescreen works, because all the resolutions listed in that document (except the 640 x 870 portrait mode) are the standard "TV" aspect ratio.
Please post back with your findings.
    Steve Farber
Well, good news and bad news...
Good news is, the monitor is beautiful and glowing brightly. In fact I'm using it to type this right now.
The bad news is, it's hooked up to my wife's G4 iBook. I'm using the mini dvi adapter with the vga cable that came with the monitor.
When I hook up the monitor to the pismo, the pismo's screen becomes a scrambled jumble of lines while the monitor shows the desktop, with the dialogue window frozen with no cursor movement. Desktop icons are absent as well. The only way to get out of this is a restart. If I close the lid, the pismo goes to sleep but won't wake up when the lid is opened, or even when keys are tapped.
Can't find any info on the apple site on what to do here. Any ideas?!
    Steve Farber
    It works!
I re-read you r post Kenichi about putting the pismo to sleep, and pulled up this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58614
and realized I needed to use a usb keyboard. I unearthed our old usb keyboard from our B/W and plugged the dell monitor in as well as the usb -
and the monitor sparng to life!
Aspect ratio is correct - while the screen itself maintains its widescreen form - the text and images are not squeezed (as they were moments ago on the iBook).
    I'm elated.
We have an apple pro bluetooth keyboard which I'll try out tomorrow (as well as the bluetooth dongle) to see if that works just as well, just getting late now and too tired to try it out. Also have to try the RF BenQ laser mouse, because I've got the b/w Puck out and I don't want to go back to that!
For the record, according to System Preferences, the pimso and monitor have set themselves at 1360x768 at millions of colors and 60 hZ refresh rate, I didn't have to do a thing.
    Kenichi Watanabe
That's good news. I looked up that monitor on the 'net, and one review said that the "native" (optimum) resolution for that model was 1680x1050. That makes sense since that's the same resolution for Apple's 20" display.
So try going to the Display preference to see if 1680x1050 is available as an option. Since it can do millions of colors on my big CRT at 1600x1200 (1920000 pixels), I hope it can do millions at 1680x1050 (1764000 pixels).
    Steve Farber
Dell 2007WFP widescreen LCD external display works perfectly at 1680x1050 resolution on a G3 400 pismo with 768 ram, bluetooth keyboard via dongle and rf mouse via rf dongle. Love the future proof pismo!

  • Problem: MBP Is not allowing external monitor Widescreen resolutions.

I am using a 27" LCD HD TV (Yes, TV, not monitor) DVI->DVI and the MBP will not allow me to use a widescreen resolution on my external monitor.
Yes, I assure you, it is Widescreen. The native resolution is 1280x720.
Anyone have a clue how I can fix this? Running a stretched 4:3 screen ***** HARD. This was my old windows PC monitor and I never had this issue before.

    Hi,
I've got the same problem. Tried SwitchResX with not much success. I'm using as second screen a Benq w100 projector. When I force resolutions like 854x480 at about 60Hz, the projector won't recognise it, which makes sense since the input is not supported as such from a PC.
I think the clue would be sending a HDTV/HDMI signal through the DVI cable. Has anybody managed to do this with the ATI Radeon X1600 that comes with the MBP?

  • Getting the widescreen video format WITHOUT the black letterbox

    Hi,
I'm making a website and trying to put up a video with a format similar to this website - www.born2consult.com
I'm using a regular DV camera (which has the 16x9) format.
My problem is that I shot my video in 16x9 format but when I import it, then export it from iMovie, the black letterbox is still part of the video. But as you can see from the website I linked from above, I don't want that letterbox.
So is there a way to get rid of this letterbox?
    - Should I be shooting in regular 4:3 format, or 16x9 format?
    - Does iMovie even allow this capability?
    - If not, how do I do it in final cut pro?
    Thanks everyone.

This is the iMovie 5 forum. If you are running that you may get problems as it is largely incompatible with Leopard.
In iMovie 6 you should set preferences for the project as DV Widescreen and NOT check the box 'automatic letterboxing & pillarboxing'.

  • Wont capture n Widescreen 16:9

I have a Sony DCR-PC55E that wont capture in 16:9.
I start a new project, select DV widescreen but I get a 4:3 area appear in iMovie.
When I play back my footage its all squashed, iMovie then performs letterboxing after its captured making my 16:9 squashed to 4:3 have black bars on it!!!
How can I capture my footage at 16:9?
The same process has been tried on two G5's with iLife 06 and using two different cameras the other being a semi pro Cannon, with each setup we get the same results - all footage is in Pal format.
    Thanks

I understand that clearly and did it but my problem is i have saved the project in NTSC mode and widescreen before and want to add more clips into the project. But when i plugin my handycam and switch imovie to camera mode, it says:
    "Incompatible Camera Video Format
The attached camera uses a different video format than your project's format. To use this camera, disconnect any other tape-based cameras, then create a new, empty project. "
But first project was made with the same handycam, same mini dv casette and same settings i really dont get it. I tired to do it in a new project with DV-Widescreen mode, when i switch on my camera it goes back to PAL and images seems longer. i will watch with a widescreen enabled television, maybe this problem doesnt make any difference i dont know.
    Thanks,
    Natalie

  • Widescreen (16:9) format

When I import video from my Sony DCR-HC24E camcorder which is set to widescreen (16:9) it does not appear in iMovie as widescreen. Instead the image is elongated vertically. How can I cepture the widescreen version that I have recorded and ensure that it stays widescreen on my final burn to disc? I have heard the expression "letterboxing" - is this of any help to me and how could I achieve it? These may seem stupid questions but I am absolutely brand new to iMovie - a novice in other words. Thanks and best regards to you all, Huguenot

Thanks, Lee. I have now followed your advice and tried that but although it gives me a widescreen moniotr panel in iMovie, it imports as a coventional 4:;3 format, leaving the sides of the screen blank. Then a strange thing happened - it expanded the image to fill but now the image is stretched horizontally. Next, when I attempted to import more clips from the camcorder I got a message saying the project is incompatible with the camcorder. I am now tearing my hair out because I am totally lost. Help! What on earth can I do now, apart from pouring myself a large Scotch?!

  • Importing Widescreen Clips

Ok, so I've got iMovie 06 on my beautiful eMac and I've tried playing with all the settings. For some reason, iMovie tries to take my widescreen (16:9, 1024x576 res) clip and make it 4:3 again. It pretty much destroys it and squashes its living guts out of it. It's an MP4, so it shouldn't be an incompatible file type. I've got my iMovie project set up as 16:9 1280x720, and whenever I import a 16:9 video (or any other dimension other than 4:3 for that matter) it squishes or stretches it to be 4:3. Is there ANY way around this? Quick replies please, I need this video rendered by tomorrow.
    Thanks
    -Gavin Roskamp

Yeah, I tried that after it wouldn't work, but I just tried the other person's way and tweaked it a bit. DV was being WAY low quality, so I exported in .mp4 format and made it really nice HD and all and I played it in quicktime, looks just like the previous file. Import it into iMovie and boom! I've got myself my beautiful HD widescreen again

  • Mini-DVI to Video adapter + Widescreen CRT Television problem...

The problem is that in the resolution list in Display-tab for the second display, which is PAL TV, have no resolutions for WIDESCREEN TV. Only resolutions are 640x480, 720x480, 720x576, 800x600 and 1024x768.
Is this a OS related or is there different adapters to iMac 24 and iMac 20? The adapter which I now have is lent from my friend and he have iMac 20.
How this even can be an issue to MAC, because this could be done easily on PC. I just got my first Mac and I love it but this kind of problems I even couldn't imagine.

My 27" flat screen TV added some 1220x720 selections to choose from. Go to the "NTSC/PAL" display perference panel and click the "Detect Displays."
From experence I have never been able to really use the TV as a true second display. Although it really does work quite well for showing DVD movie's, Home movie's, iPhoto slideshows, MS Word PowerPoint or anything FrontRow.
For quicker access to the Display Preferences check the "Show displays in menu bar" This places a display icon on the menu bar for one click access to resolution list and preferences for both displays.
