Bento destroys the Apple Address Book

Does anyone out there know how to restore the Apple Address Book to its original condition after removing FileMaker Bento? After installing Bento on my Macbook Pro, Outlook 2011 no longer syncs with the Apple Address Book -- neither will any other application. I have tried removing all of the Address Book preferences, etc... and reinstalling Address Book from the Snow Leopard install disk. But, nothing seems to work. It's like Bento destroyed the ability for anything to talk to the Apple Address Book. I have uninstalled Bento and removed literally everything it installed.
I've also spent about an hour and a half on the phone with Microsoft to ensure Outlook 2011 was not corrupted.
Finally, I've tried creating a new user account on my Mac -- the Apple Address Book works fine syncing with everything when I create a new user account. But, I don't want to wipe out my core user account.
Any ideas out there?

I'd like to know this too. I don't want to create a new user account - and strongly suspect that Bento trashed my address book somehow too. Distribution lists - which worked previously - for some reason will not be edited (they hang).
I've removed Bento (wasn't using it) but would really like to know how to fix the address book.

  • I get an error trying to use Apple Address Book with Word Mail merge - says it cannot open data file?

I am running MS Word 2011, latest Mac OS, and trying to use the Mail Merge option with the Apple Address Book as the data source.
However whenever I select the Apple Address Book as the data source, I get the error "Word was unable to open the data source".
    Anybody got any idea why?
    Thanks for your help

I am guessing you could have solved this little problem already but perhaps someone else may benefit:
I struggled with the same problem - not being able to use Mac Address Book (i.e. Contacts) with Word 2013 for mac mail-merge (on Mountain Lion and, now, on Mavericks) - with the exact same error message reported by Klausngigtoas above .
So I read lots of techie stuff on forums which passed a nice few hours but didn't help. Finally, with slumped, defeated expression, I gave up.
But I just now (such is life) I accidentally stumbled upon the simple solution:
    1. Enter System Preferences and click Security & Privacy.
    2. Select the Privacy tab and then on Contacts on the left hand panel.
    3. In the right hand panel ("Allow the apps below to access your contacts") just tick the Contacts box.
    4. And Voilà! - at least it worked for me - hope it does for you.

  • Create & Modify Date in Apple Address Book

I use the create & modify date a lot in Microsoft Outlook's contacts.  Although those fields are supported and updated by the Apple Adderess Book, I can't see a way to display or sort on those in the Apple Address Book.

I'm having problems as well. I've migrated all my contacts to iCloud, and the following simple script fails:
      make new group at the end of groups with properties {name:"Some group"}
      repeat with this_person in people
        add this_person to group current_group
      end repeat
Syntax Error: Address Book got an error: You can only add a person to a group.
This definitely worked in SL, and also prior to 10.7.2. That's why I suspect iCloud integration.

  • Contacts not synching from Apple Address Book to iPhone

I updated to iTunes 10.6.3 on MacOS 10.8.1 and my Contacts no longer synch.
In fact, on the iTunes Info page, the groups don't even display when Synch Contacts and All Contacts are both selected.
The iPhone has iOS 5.1.1, which is current.
I checked Software Update. Then I synched with the advanced option to overwrite Contacts on the iPhone with the Apple Address Book on my iMac. No luck.
Then I searched online and didn't find anything on point, so I came here to share this issue in the hopes that you have some inights and ideas to fix this problem.
    Any suggestions?
BTW, this clears Contacts on the iPhone.
    Thanks in advance!

Oops -- I just had to turn iCloud on in the System settings on the iPhone, then the Contacts synched.

How can I use apple mail (linked to gmail) and get it to only do autofill on the contacts that I have in apple address book? Everytime I write an email on the Apple mail app (as well as in Gmail) it recommends a bunch of emails that are not my contacts. • What is the smallest data structure record in a .TXT file record to be recognized as an Apple Address Book "Data Card"?

Hello! This is my first time in this discussion group. The question posed is the subject line itself:
What is the smallest data structure record in a .TXT file record to be recognized as an Apple Address Book "Data Card"?
I'm lazy! As a math instructor with 40+ students per class per semester (pCpS), I would rather not have to create 40 data cards pCpS by hand, only to expunge that info at semester's end. My college's IS department can easily supply me with First name, Last name, and eMail address info, along with a myriad of other fields. I can manipulate those data on my end to create the necessary .TXT file, but I don't know the essential structure of that file.
    Can you help me?
    Thank you in advance.
    Bill

    Hello Bill, & welcome aboard!
No idea what  pCpS is, sorry.
To import a text file into Address Book, it needs to be a comma delimited .csv file, like...

  • Apple address book is not responding -can i delete the application , and then reinstall it

on my imac apple address book is not responding -can i delete the application and then reinstall it - all contacts are backed up to icloud

If you have in mind backup, I would not count on iCloud backup, just go to ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book. In Lion, ~/Library is available by pressing Option key when selecting Go while in the finder. Backup that folder.
Deleting that app will create further troubles. When a basic Apple app bahaves like that, you should better identify why it behaves like that, it may mean a more serious system issue. Is this the only app, which presents this problem? If yes, rather delete its associated plist file in ~/Preferences (the same location, press Option when selecting Go).
Do regular backups of your data, choose a backup app you consider appropriate and proceed. When you are familiar with its reactions, you may then ‘play’ with deleting the partition and install/reinstall.

  • How can I migrate from Outlook 2011 to iCal and Apple Address Book in Mavericks now that synching is no longer possible?

Now that I am on Mavericks and no longer able to sync between my iPhone/iPad and Outlook 2011 on my MacBook Pro, I'm finally taking the leap (which I should have done long ago) and abandoning Outlook 2011 all together (doesn't help that Outlook now prompts me to rebuild by Identity multiple times per day). I am hoping to export from Outlook to iCal, Address Book, etc, but I would love it if someone could check my steps.
Delete iCal and Apple Address Book content -- Because I have old data in iCal and Address Book (that was synched before I upgraded to Mavericks), I planned to delete this data as follows:
Manually deleting my multiple calendars in the iCal app
Go to Go>Home>Library>Calendars and drag "Calendar Cache" to trash
Go to Go>Home>Library>Caches and drag "com.apple.iCal" and "com.apple.AddressBook" to the trash
Go to Go>Home>Library>Application Support and drag "Address Book" to the trash
Export Outlook 2011 Calendars to iCalIs there a file format that I can use to export from Outlook 2011 and then import into iCal? I will use this file format to individually export each of my calendars from Outlook 2011 and import them into iCal.
Export Outlook 2011 Contact List to Apple Address BookIs there a file format that I can use to export from Outlook 2011 and then import into Apple Address Book?
    Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi acs4055,
As per your query I found a relevant solution for resolving this,  actually I haven’t tried the steps you wrote here in your query.  But I found a solid key answer for exporting from Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9.1) Outlook 2011 to iCal for Apple mail. This is possible through Drag and Drop method via this you can undoubtedly migrate Outlook 2011 Calendar to ical format.
Hope it will assist you and you will be able to attain a desired solution.

  • HT4489 How can I synchronize contacts between Apple Address Book/iPhone address book and Outlook (I'm on Mac OX10.7.4 and using Office 2011)?

I appear to have done what I should to move to iCloud on my Mac, MacbookAir, iPhone and iPad.  Using Outlook 2011 on the iMac and unable to sync contacts between Outlook and my Apple Address Book and iPhone over the cloud.  I gather lots of people have the same problem but some appear to have solved it... any ideas?
Also, in some sync, I managed to duplicate the entries on the Address Book on my Mac, whereas the iCloud Address Book is ok.  How can I replace the Address Book on my computer with the one on iCloud?
    Thank You for any help!

Hi Lucy, I had the same problem with Outlook data sync. Once you've enabled iCloud all your contacts are moved to iCloud and are no longer stored on Mac, that's why Outlook cannot reach them - there is simply nothing to reach as data physically stored in cloud.
I use SyncMate to solve this problem. This app allows connecting and syncing numerous devices and accounts with your Mac and they have recently added iCloud into this list (here the page where they describe sync with iCloud http://www.sync-mac.com/cloud-sync.html ).
This is how I established sync of my Outlook data with iCloud via this app.
    1. SyncMate syncs only that data which is located on your Mac so you will need to move your contacts back to Address Book on mac from iCloud and disable iCloud for contacts (in order they were stored on Mac, not in iCloud).
    2. You install SyncMate and add iCloud as a new connection (depending on data you want to sync you need to choose "Cloud contacts" or "Cloud calendars" connection in SyncMate wizard and log into your iCloud via SyncMate). Once you've done this, you can sync data on Mac with iCloud via SyncMate.
    3. I may assume that automatic sync option is enabled in Outlook preferences (as previously your contacts on Mac were synced with Outlook). If no - please, enable it (got to Outlook preferences).
    4. Once all this done, data will be automatically synced betwen Outlook and iCloud (latter via SyncMate). The trick of SyncMate is that data is physically located on your Mac (thus ensuring it will be synced with other devices and accounts SyncMate supports, as I said before, SyncMate works with data which is located on Mac), but you still can have it in iCloud (sync will be performed via SyncMate, no need to enable iCloud itself).
    5. And of course, you will be able to sync your iPhone contacts with your Mac (SyncMate supports sync with iPhones also). These contacts will be also synced to Outlook.

  • How can I return to the Classic address book 3 pane view?

How can I return to the Classic address book 3 pane view  & get rid of the stupid fake leather and same for iCal?

I asked the same question at the Apple Genius Bar a week or so ago and they said there was no way to change it.  I am with you - do not like this new format at all and would love it if Apple would offer both -maybe when they do an "fix" next?  This was one change in Lion that should not have been made from Snow Leopard.  I am really sorry I upgraded at this point.

  • How can transfer Mac Outlook Contact files to the MacPro Address book?

I tried the suggested three step process, ie, (1) Export Contacts from Outlook in txt formant, and (2) Open the txt file Excel and Save As in csv format, (3) Import the csv file into the MacPro Address book. However the Export from Outlook Contacts in txt results in a messed up file with data in random columns.  The Import into the Address book resulted in 21,000 plus entries (my Outlook Contacts had about 3000 plus).  Any solutions?

Mac Outlook exports files in a .olm format. What you need is an .olm to the Apple format converter - here's such a tool - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/olm-converter-pro/id522796199?mt=12 = expensive but it gets pretty decent reviews.

  • Problems with Apple Address Book Sync after upgrading BBDesktop s/w. Also, no more Rogers support - abandoned customer

I just upgraded my BB Desktop Software but now have a sync error - details show that over 800 entries need to be synced.
When I look at 'details', the 'before' shows a phone number field called "Main Fax" the 'after' shows a phone number field called "Other", with the same phone number targeted.
There are a handful of other syncs such as address blank in 'before' and completed in 'after.  I found these by just scrolling down the list with my down arrow and scanning the 'before' entries as they flew by.
There seems to be no way for me to manually choose which of the 'before' and 'after' I'd like to have.
Worst of all, I called Rogers for sync support, as I have done for years.  Guess what? They've stopped supporting anything but their actual network connections, but didn't bother to tell their customers.  There I was in a 'user down' situation, late for an appointment (missed it totally thanks to this), and they were telling me the most they can do is send an e-mail. or have me *pay* for the support that used to be free, selling me a 'premium support' package. Yikes!
So I clicked 'sync later' on the address book, and am looking for help before I try another sync tomorrow.
For example, ideas to help me manually over-ride the data field mapping from 'Main Fax' to 'Fax' in Blackberry Desktop Software.
Anyone have any ideas?  Much appreciated!
I live in Canada, by the way, so if you are a Rogers customer in Canada, take note of their change in support.
Thank God I did  a backup before I upgraded my Blackberry Desktop Software.

  • Apple Address Book Won't Open

On my iMac G5, my Apple Address Book won't open. It has been working perfectly and I've never had a problem since buying the computer about a year ago. Though the name appears on the top menu bar and the triangle shows beneath the Address Book icon on the Dock, nothing appears on the screen. I ran the Disk Utility Repair Permissions, but aht didn't correct it. I've rebooted and that didn't solve the issue either. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
I don't know how to troubleshoot Address Book, other than replacing its data with a backup copy if you have one, or just getting rid of that data. Address Book stores the preferences in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist, and everything else in the ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook folder.
You may try moving those files out of there, to the Desktop. You may try removing just the com.apple.AddressBook.plist preferences file (so that Address Book re-creates it again), for example, or removing just AddressBook.data and renaming AddressBook.data.previous to AddressBook.data. Whatever you do, make a backup copy of those files first, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder.

  • Re: Apple address book application PRINT PROBLEM

When printing a hard copy of my address book, I encounter these problems...
1, in any print format I use,  whether compact or indexed, whether I choose landscape or portrait, some info for the last contact in a column will "wrap" up to the next column with the 1st line cut off at the top!  The card name in the first column prints just fine, but one column over doesn't start with a card name and the info that starts to print there is only half a line, cut off at the top!
2, the "Notes" field won't print.  I cannot find any print field option to show the notes I have made.  I cannot find any way to add a "notes" field in the card template.  I would change a field to a custom name, but then the field itself doesn't accommodate what I need to record there.
    3.  I have tried to change the font size in the print options, but the font size will not change to a larger type when I print.
Can anyone help with a Fix for these issues?  Or can anyone suggest a purchased Apple application that I could export my address file to and print with more options than the standard Apple address book application?
