Berkeley DB Licence

Apologies if this is not quite the right forum for this post.
I'm looking for a little clarification on the BDB licence.
As I understand it is a dual licence.
Where I am a little unclear is with regards to re-distribution.
If we develop an application that makes use of bdb and sell that app to a client I understand our choices to be as follows:
1. If we sell & distribute our app as closed source, we must purchase a bdb licence
2. If we sell & distribute our app to the client, as open source, reproducing the original bdb licence, we do not need to purchase a licence.
Is this understanding correct so far?
I am further unclear about is the following:
Assuming we use route 2 above and we sell the app to a client and include with it the full source code for our application:
- Are we obliged to make the application source code available to the wider community, or do we only need make it available to those people to whom we sell/distribute it?
(Of course they would then be free to redistribute it themselves, but that is another question)

Hello, I'm a product manager in the BDB group and I deal with a lot of questions about the license. I'm not a lawyer, nor do I represent the legal team at Oracle - you must consult with them and your own legal council for legal opinions. This is just my interpretation of the license.
Given that:
You are correct that the "trigger" is redistribution when using (linking into, combining with) Sleepycat Licensed products, so you're off to a great start. When you redistribute your combined work you can stay within the bounds of the Sleepycat License by open sourcing your application (essentially any OSI license will do, you don't have to choose the Sleepycat License for your application). If your application isn't going to be open source then you need to purchase the right to combine and redistribute it with the Sleepycat Licensed product (in this case Berkeley DB JE from Oracle).
To your questions:
1. yes
2. yes (and you can choose any OSI license you'd like)
So, "YES" you've got it "so far". A+
Your final question is the kicker. Yes, when you take "path 2" (open source your application, redistribute it to a 3rd party), you are obliged to make that source code available to anyone and everyone who wants a copy not just the customer to whom you've sold it. This is part of being open source, "open" as in "available for download". You can read this requirement within the 3rd clause of the license:
* 3. Redistributions in any form must be accompanied by information on
* how to obtain complete source code for the Oracle Berkeley DB
* Java Edition software and any accompanying software that uses the
* Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition software. The source code must
* either be included in the distribution or be available for no
* more than the cost of distribution plus a nominal fee, and must be
* freely redistributable under reasonable conditions. For an
* executable file, complete source code means the source code for all
* modules it contains. It does not include source code for modules or
* files that typically accompany the major components of the operating
* system on which the executable file runs.
http://download.oracle.com/maven/com/sleepycat/je/license.txt
At the time the license was written (early 1990s) it was harder to deliver software, the web didn't exist, CDROMs and FTP were the rule of thumb. The intent was/is that anyone contacting you (via mail, email, phone or other means - web page access, twitter, etc. today) would be given the opportunity to get a copy of the code free of charge (with a nominal fee for a CDROM and shipping at most). Now, with the web this essentially means that you provide a link somewhere on your site where I can click and get the source code and that you not limit that access. You can certainly record who is downloading, ask questions before enabling a download, even charge a few pennies to cover your redistribution fees (if you choose too and can account for things like that).
Make sense?
Remember, I am not a lawyer. You should contact one who understands open source licensing and have this same conversation.

  • Network Connection Timeout when "Chkng for available downloads" from iTunes

I have been struggling with this problem for weeks and have spent a significant amount of time trying to diagnose and fix without success.
When I select “Check for Available Downloads” through iTunes, I receive a “Network Connection Timeout” message and iTunes fails to download any information. It does ask me to validate my access with a password before it fails.
This problem initially occurred after I purchased the iTunes Plus updates for my music library. It backlogged about 70 updates that are now sitting in the queue to be downloaded to my local iTunes library. However, since I made that purchase, I have not successfully been able to do any downloads from the iTunes store. I suspect that the volume of items in the queue is related to the problem (as a trigger or the cause).
I have also tried to buy a single song. Although the purchase is successful (it charges my card and adds the song to the download queue), it doesn’t successfully download the song. I cannot, at this time, even get to a point where I can display a list of the queue for download. It always fails when trying to access that available download queue.
Podcast downloads still work fine through iTunes. I have never had problems with the store before and have done very large downloads (e.g. audio books) in the past. I have had no changes to my configuration leading up to this problem.
I am running a relatively new computer with a clean install of Windows 7, plenty of memory and very fast processors. I’ve got high capacity DSL. The connection is wired from the router into my network card (not wireless).
I have tried a number of things as noted below and the problem still occurs:
    1. Confirmed access to internet, and ability to download from other web sites without timeout
    2. Confirmed my ability to access the iTunes store, change my personal information, browse songs
    3. Confirmed ability to download podcasts
    4. Deactivated my windows firewall, antivirus and Net nanny content protection.
    5. Deactivated the router firewall, and placed my PC in the DMZ of the router (which means that it should be wide open to the external network).
    6. Swapped out the DSL modem for a different DSL modem and completely removed the router from the configuration.
    7. Checked my drivers on the network card and made sure they are up to date.
    8. Ran Windows 7 network diagnostics – no problems detected
    9. Ran iTunes network diagnostics – no problems detected
    10. Uninstalled all software related to iTunes and reinstalled most current versions (iTunes, Quicktime, Bonjur, etc.)
    Thoughts?

    Hi there.
Don't know if anyone can help me, but I've got some of my own productions I have converted to MP3 and wanted to add to my iTunes. I've done most of them with no problems, but for some reason the version of iTunes I'm running (10.0.1.22) won't allow me to manually add cover art through the "get info" option in the right click dropdown menu.
Anyone know what I'm missing here?!!!

  • Re-licensing Berkeley DB back to

    Hi guys,
I'm not sure if this has already been discussed here or even if this is right place to request such thing. If there is a better place, just point me there, please.
My question is simple -- can upstream even think about re-licensing Berkeley DB 6.0 back to LGPLv2? It's not hard to imagine how many problems with licensing incompatibility were introduced by re-licensing Berkeley DB to AGPLv3. There are so many projects that use Berkeley DB and cannot be re-licensed as well, which basically means Berkeley DB started to die since 6.0, because such projects will need to switch to some alternative.. If this was desired by upstream to remove BDB from real life, then I can understand it. But anyway, I'd like to hear there is no way to convince upstream to re-licence back.
    Regards,
    Honza

I am Jesús Cea, maintainer of the Python Berkeley DB bindings.
The bindings are licensed as BSD 3-clauses, so my code is incompatible with BDB 6.0. No Python program, under any license, can use BDB 6.0, then. I can't change the license because it is inherited code and it is impossible to contact with every past author.
I plan to do a release that ONLY allow linking with BDB 6.0 IF you define a environment variable saying "yes, I have a Oracle commercial license for this". Ugly and hacky, but hopefully safe for everybody.
Personaly I use Berkeley DB HA and two phases commit A LOT in my internal projects. It is my main mode, in fact. I use it for everything, from mail storage to application deployment.

  • How to find licence number to activate software ?

I have just bought the Adobe creative Cloud for enterprise.
I had download the creative cloud and now each software is asking for a licence number but I can't find it.
And I have no acces to Adobe Licensing website to get one.
    Can you help me?
    Thanks.

    Hi Berengere,
    Welcome on the Adobe Forums!
There is no serial number needed to activate the Creative Cloud, the Adobe ID will be used to activate the product.
As the product mentioned is Cloud for Enterprise, you have to verify first if your Adobe ID (email address) has been assigned to the user rights.
You will find more information in the following link: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/manage-creative-cloud-teams-membership.html
If you have already proceeded the the previous steps, please try the steps below then:
    1. Clean Up cached user login information
    Close the Creative Cloud application.
    Navigate to the OOBE folder.
    Windows: [System drive]:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE
    Mac OS: /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE
    Delete the opm.db file.
    Launch Creative Cloud.
    2. Reset the Hosts file
    Windows
Choose Start > Run, type %systemroot% \system32\drivers\etc, and then press Enter.
Right-click the hosts file and select Open. Select Notepad for the application to open the hosts file.
Back up the hosts file: Choose File > Save As, save the file as hosts.backup, and then click OK.
Search the hosts file for entries that reference Adobe (for example, 127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com) and delete these entries.
    Save and close the file.
    Mac OS
Log in as an administrator to edit the hosts file in Mac OS.
In a Finder window, choose Go > Go To Folder.Type /etc.
Select the hosts file and open it.
Back up the hosts file: Choose File > Save As, save the file as hosts.backup, and then click OK.
Search the hosts file for entries that reference Adobe (for example, 127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com) and delete these entries.
    Save and close the file.
Please, let us know how it goes.
    Thank you.
    Arnaud.

  • Can multiple threads share the same cursor in berkeley db java edition?

We use berkeley db to store our path computation results. We now have two threads which need to retrieve records from database. Specifically, the first thread accesses the database from the very beginning and read a certain number of records. Then, the second thread needs to access the database and read the rest records starting from the position where the cursor stops in the first thread. But, now, I cannot let these two threads share the same cursor. So, I have to open the database separately in two threads and use individual cursor for each thread. This means I have to in the second thread let the cursor skip the first certain number of records and then read the rest records. However, in this way, it is a waste of time letting the second thread skip a certain of records. It will be ideal for us that the second thread can start reading the record just from the place where the first thread stops. Actually, I have tried using transactional cursor and wanted to let the two threads share the same transactional cursor. But it seems that this didn't work.
Can anyone give any suggestion? Thank you so much!

  • Divide licences to use cloud discount?

Now we own two Design Premium CS5 (with same serial number) and one Web Premium CS5 licence, all under one Adobe ID. If we go and buy three Cloud subscriptions, we'd have to register two new Adobe IDs.
    1. Is it possible to divide existing licences between all three accounts, so each one could use discounted price for Cloud (for owners of previous versions)?
    2. And if I use this offer, do I keep licence for CS5 Suite? Could I still use it for an upgrade to 'classic' CS6 Suite?

    Hi Benjamin,
Not sure if the prior products are registered to a business or individual but from the terms and conditions of the promo offer
    https://creativecloud-specialoffer.adobe.com/special-offer/?loc=en_US
This offer is limited to one (1) purchase of one (1) Creative Cloud annual membership per customer
You might need to contact our customer service for assistance if your existing product registrations were done incorrectly.

    Hi Sonia,
While transferring Adobe from laptop to PC the licensing files got corrupt and the right way to use Adobe Applications is to install first as transferring from a different machine can give you problems.
You can try steps from this article if that helps otherwise you have to reinstall and manually delete some files , everything is mentioned.

  • How to find licence for Hyperion Software

    Hi,
I want "Essbase Application Manager" for one of my team member but somehow our desktop support team is not able to find this software in their catalog . I think name of the software may be changed.
I have same software on my desktop but it is inside "Hyperion Solutions" SOftware . Does anyone have any idea on my situatuin.
Is there any Hyperion product in which I can ""Essbase Application Manager" for my day to day work
Also I want to find licence for the Hyperion SOLutions software on my desktop. Can anyone tell me how I can find it ?

What version of Essbase are you running? I think Application Manager was decommissioned in Version 6 (although it might have been Version 7). It was replaced by Essbase Administration Services(EAS). Application Manager does not need a license as it is just an administrative tool for Essbase. For the license number again it depends on the version. Later version do not have a license number, earlier versions do. In some cases you can get it from App Manager by getting server properties and it will show you. In other versions, you would start Essbase in foreground and it will show you the license as it starts. Essbase 7.16, System 9.3.1 and Version 11 do not have licenses that you have to enter.

I am a long-term user of Lightroom as a standalone product with a perpetual licence. As a retired person on limited income, it is very disappointing to me that Adobe have introduced the 'Creative Cloud' (CC) subscription service in order for me to be able to continue upgrading this excellent product. It will be for me too expensive at the minimum cost of £9 per month. The additional services that CC brings are personally of no relevance or usefulness. Adobe should be prepared to support existing users who are, like myself, non commercial, amateur photographers by giving them the simple opportunity to upgrade to Lightroom 6 as a standalone, perpetual licence product. As a member of a camera club I know my co-members who use Lightroom are equally disappointed by this move to a subscription-only service.

That is possible, John, but it is only speculation on your part. Might, not will.

Other differences - with CC you get LrMobile/LrWeb and they throw in a free copy of Photoshop too.
Yes, but when I bought my standalone license and clicked on the "Download" button it took me to the LightroomCC page. The downloaded file is named Lightroom 6, but in the CC app the installed program is LightroomCC (2015).

  • Wanting to purchase lightroom photoshop deal but will be getting a new Laptop in a few months time how does it affect the licence for the pc its installed on? and do I need to have 2 licences to use on 2 computers?

    Hello,
I am very interested in this special offer for photoshop and lightroom deal. But in a couple of months will be purchasing a laptop for ease of use.
The PC will be used mainly for photo storage but could I use the lightroom on both PC and Laptop or would I need 2 licences?
Thank you in advance for any help and sorry if this question is just so silly.

It's not silly , but I'm assuming you're referring to a cloud offer. If so, if you'd looked in the terms of use, you'd have seen that you can install your software on two separate computers as long as it's only used by one person, and activated with the same Adobe ID. So you can put it on your present computer, and then install a copy on the new one when you get it.

  • DO NOT BUY A LICENCE WITH MAPS 2.0 - NOKIA ARE USE...

    Hello,
just thought I would share a story.
My girlfriend purchased a 1 year maps licence after upgrading to Maps beta 2.0. After using it and finding it does nothing but lead us via the longest possible route, constantly loses the car position and continually directs us down dead end roads we downgraded back to the original version of maps as per the instructions on the beta labs website.
We then went to enter the licence code to activate the navigation feature in the original version. It didn't work.
I called support and they told me to use the update feature to update the licence. Done, to no avail.
They promised to call us back within 5 working days. 8 days passed and I called them again. They said they needed to know the firmware version. At this point I asked to be called back within 2 working days and was told that would happen. 3 days later we receive a call saying they'll email us some troubleshooting tips.
We don't want troubleshooting tips. We want them to fix the problem. It's obviously a problem with their database, and they refuse to fix it.
In short, Nokia are absolutely useless and cannot provide the most basic of support. It's bad enough they sucker us into this blind profiteering scheme by making us pay a subscription for a service that all other navigation software provides at no cost once the software has been purchased.
There is obviously a problem on their end and they are unable to fix it. I will now be in contact with the TIO/ACCC who hopefully can help.
Just a warning to others: do not give your money to them. Go buy one of the plethora of other brilliant navigation suites available. Maps navigation doesn't even work very well, anyway.

Nokia Maps 2.0 is still in beta. That means it's still in the testing stages. Nokia released it publically as a courtesey, sort of a "Here's what we have so far. Please try it out and see what you think" kind of thing. Beta software is rarely, if ever, supported by the developer beyond the "please report any bugs that you find" level. Because it's a test release version, and therefore incomplete, you basically use it at your own risk if you download it and install it.
If you download and install the release version of the program when Nokia releases it, and try upgrading to the navigation package at that point, Nokia will provide full support for the product.
As a counterpoint to your problems... I'd had a navigation liscence (North America) for Maps 1.2 for about 3 months before version 2 beta came out. When I installed the new version, my navigation liscence transfered flawlessly, and worked almost as well as with the older version. Almost. It sometimes didn't work at all. Plus... The interface had issues, some of the menus were messed up, some features didn't work as expected. I went back to 1.2.
