Berkeley DB license is GPL v3 compatible?
Hi,
some month ago I've read a post of Gregory Burd about it'sn clear what it would be Oracle interpretation of "use over the network". Now that GNU Affero GPL v3 it's been released, how it affects to Oracle Berkeley DB open source license?
Is GNU Afero GPL v3 compatible con the above mentionated Oracle Berkeley DB license? If it's so, why?
Thanks in advance!
Javier
We've started an internal legal review of the changes in the GPLv3 to determine if there are any implications wrt the Sleepycat Public License that need to be addressed. This will take a while, legal issues are always tricky. Be patient. For now, I can't offer any legal opinion on this issue.
thanks for raising this issue, it needs to be addressed,

Man pages don't have new field about License
at least PKGBUILD.proto has it.
but plz add it to the man pages too [for example in makepkg]
ty
and I would start using License because It's extra important
I should expect in the near future,
IgnoreLicenseType = non-free
and similar stuff that would keep acroread {and not only}out of the way..?
licensetypes coud be gpl-lgpl-compatible {it includes the latest BSD license}, X11, and so on..Hello Xentac. hmm I missed the 1. point it seems..
anyways, you 've added the license feature to Pacman.
so at least one can find it on the man makepkg in the fields where you mention url source etc..
I think that the IgnoreLicenseType = non-free is the way for AL to go
But I'm just user with some pkgs (at the moment) so you decide -
Error updating 'licenses' package
I have licenses 2.4 installed.
While performing system update it tried to install licenses 2.5 from [testing].
And that's what I receive:
# pacman -Q licenses
licenses 2.4-1
# pacman -S licenses
error: could not prepare transaction
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
licenses: /usr/share/licenses/common/FDL exists in filesystem
licenses: /usr/share/licenses/common/GPL exists in filesystem
licenses: /usr/share/licenses/common/GPL2/license.txt exists in filesystem
licenses: /usr/share/licenses/common/LGPL exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
# pacman -Qo /usr/share/licenses/common/GPL2/license.txt
/usr/share/licenses/common/GPL2/license.txt is owned by licenses 2.4-1
FDL, GPL and LGPL are directories, GPL2 is a symlink to GPL.
I also have LGPL2 which is a symlink to LGPL and a number of other directories there.
And all license.txt in all of them are owned by licenses 2.4.
I'm not sure if it is a bug in licenses package, or in pacman, or something else. Any hints (so I could maybe create correct bug entry)?Wow, that was quick, thanks!
I was just about to write about symlink differences that I have noticed, I guess that's irrelevant now.
But come on, that was just 2 posts under [signoff] message, not hard to miss...
At least the next person who has the same problem and enters forums will find this thread!

Hi,
I have a query over Flash Builder premium license. Consider a situation that I have flash builder premium license to build automation compatible Flex application and later I redistribute those SWF files to customers. If customer, doesn't posses the Flash builder premium license, but has license for automation tools. Is it ok, to distirbute the binaries build by someone else?Hi,
Have you already tried the steps here:

ASR1001-X, Bandwidth is exceeding the license level.
Dears,
I need to double check with you regarding the below log message:
Apr 22 12:47:38.178 JTZ: %BW_LICENSE-4-THROUGHPUT_MAX_LEVEL: F0: cpp_ha: Average throughput rate exceeded the total licensed bandwidth 20000000000 bps and dropped 35 times, sample period 300 seconds, in last 24 hours.
Does this means that i am having high throughput that exceeds my license 20G or what?

Sounds like it. Looks like you can do:
show platform hardware throughput level
This reads like 20G is the limit as well.

Hi,
I am working on project that uses javaee.jar.
I'v read license about Java EE and JDK
[ license|http://java.sun.com/javaee/downloads/licenses/Java_EE_5_SDK_U6_SLA&Entitlement(20080903).txt]
Seems is possible use in open source projects. Confusion only why it is not under license like GPL?Refer the steps mentioned in the follwoing document

Thank you.Hi,
QOS implementation has radically changed since the advent of
sup-7 & later
You no longer set mls qos as qos is on the engine by default.
Please see the following links
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-4500-series-switches/white_paper_c11-539588.html
"Ingress QoS: Default Actions
First and foremost, QoS does not need to be enabled on the Supervisor Engine, it is on by default in compliance with the MQC construct.
When a packet arrives at an interface, there are two options to take into consideration: is there a policy attached or not? If the packet arrives with or without a marking and there is not a policy attached to the interface, packets will flow through the switch untouched. There are no questions as to where the packet came from or if it has a valid marking. If the packet arrives with or without a marking, and a policy is attached to the interface, the packet will only then be subject to the policy classification."
And the config guide
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/15-1/XE_330SG/configuration/guide/config/qos_mrg.html#wp1461453
Hope this helps

Firefox and Mozilla Suite are forked!
Gnuzilla is the GNU version of the Mozilla suite, and IceWeasel is the GNU version of the Firefox browser. Its main advantage is an ethical one: it is entirely free software. While the source code from the Mozilla project is free software, the binaries that they release include additional non-free software. Also, they distribute non-free software as plug-ins. (IceWeasel does keep the triple licensing used by Firefox to facilitate the reuse of code.)
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla/
http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/gnuzilla/
UPDATE: it seems that they forked only GPL code to be able to get rid of MPL. (because full compiled version can be distributed only as MPL, because contains non-GPL compatible parts).
And it is already supported by Debian.
EDIT: It all reminds me XFree86. Its developers changed license to less free just because they wanted more credits, and you all know how this ended. Where's now XFree86? Instead X11 changed license to free and then with the help of FreeDesktop it is now far ahead of XFree86. These projects just swapped their places.arooaroo wrote:
Xorg was at the right place at the right time to collect all that negative energy and turn it in to some positive motivation towards making real improvements to xfree86. Forks are often caused as a response to "mismanagement" and I think that's why so many people got behind the new xorg fork.
With Mozilla, no one but RMS is stewing over the MPL license and the fact that the binary can contain non-free components. So what? It's still an open source project that delivers a piece of software that people want to use. Given that the main license contention is that It's Not GPL-only, then I still think that being OSI compliant will ensure broad support through Linux distributors.
Read this this blog entry by Matthew Garrett (a VERY active debian developer and leader). In short, he describes why the fork was not only necessary, but why the requirements imposed by Mozilla on the Debian project resulted in the dropping of firefox from etch and the inclusion of IceWeasel.
The trademark issue is not something that can be fixed with a license. GPL/MPL has nothing to do with the branding of firefox/mozilla - but the Mozilla project tried to use their trademark to impose "non-free" licensing conditions on the debian folks. That's just wrong. -
I did a pacman -Syyu and it told me that there was a bunch of conflict and ask me If I wanted to replace this by that... It was steam related stuff, I installed it along with other stuff it needed. Anyway I said yes and boom, can't start x anymore I get this:
xauth: error while loading librairies : /usr/lib/libX11.so.6: file too shoort
xinit : error while loading librairies : /usr/lib/libX11.so.6: file too shoort
Any idea is good
ThanksLinux arch 3.7.9.2-ARCH x86_64, didn't get it, with what should I compare this?
I think I could launch pacman -Qi from a live iso and write it (: brb

Sun Java 3D looking glass now available - Package ?
Hi,
justread the following:
https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/lg3ddevelopersguide.html
Project Looking Glass Open Source
Sun Microsystems is contributing Project Looking Glass, based on Java(tm) technology, to the open source community. Project Looking Glass is an exploration project to bring innovative 3D features to the desktop environment. The desktop interface will offer an intuitive, new 3D environment to interact with desktop applications featuring window transparency, rotation, zoom, multiple desktop workspaces and miniaturization.Project Looking Glass offers a platform to realize far richer and more entertaining user experience for existing and new applications in 2D or 3D. The technology enables developers to build highly visual 3D desktops and applications that will run on Linux systems such as Sun's Java Desktop System. The Solaris(tm) environment will be supported in near future.
What does this mean to you?
If you're a software developer, please go to http://enews.sun.com/CTServlet?id=63058 … 8531213971 and download this early version of the code and join the community in developing the 3D desktop.
Interested in using the Project Looking Glass? The project is in very early stages and a commercial version is not available yet. Please go to http://enews.sun.com/CTServlet?id=63058 … 8531213990 to keep up to date on our progress.
Why Open Source?
Project Looking Glass is in its infancy, and we'd like to explore lots of ideas and possibilities. We're releasing the Project Looking Glass code to the whole community to explore every aspect of the technology rather than restricting access to a privileged few. We believe this open development is an excellent model to pursue this exciting and vast opportunity. So, your involvement is eagerly anticipated. We believe new dimension of developer innovation by making Sun's cutting edge technology available at Sun's 3D Desktop Technology Open Source Project on java.net.
We have been working for several months on cleaning the software up, providing basic features and functionality key to 3D window management. A key focus was looking at the existing 2D desktop applications, ensuring minimal compatibility and performance problems. The next step is to look what else we can do to foster real world 3D interactivity. We decided to open source this at a very early stage to ensure that we got good feedback from the community.
What's in the Open Source Project?
The following features are now available in the Project Looking Glass open source release:
3D Window Manager Platform - Java 3D based highly scalable 3D platform with client-server model support.
3D Window Manager and Application Development API - Java API to develop new 3D desktop applications and 3D desktop Window Manager features.
Native Application Integration Module - Allows developers to run conventional X11 applications in the 3D environment.
Sample 3D Window Manager - provides a simple sample implementation for testing and demonstration purposes
3D Environment Lite - Enables developers to run a simplified 3D environment as an application on a Java 3D enabled platform including Linux and Solaris environments. This serves as a development tool to test implementations.
This is all available at: http://enews.sun.com/CTServlet?id=63058 … 8531213971
What's the licensing model?
There are three license choices for developers interested in creating applications using Project Looking Glass.
For developers who are interested in reviewing, revising, and redistributing the source code as part of their own application, Project Looking Glass has been submitted as an Open Source project on java.net under the GNU Public License, or GPL.
For developers who are interested in developing an application on top of the existing Project Looking Glass platform without reviewing and/or altering the code base, there is a binary version of the current state of the project available for download under a traditional Binary Code License. This is also available on java.net.
Finally, for developers or organizations interested in other uses or revising the source code but wish to keep their implementation and related application proprietary, please contact Sun at [email protected].

[SOLVED] Certain Flash sites not working in Firefox 4...
EDIT: Solved in post #15
Using Firefox 4 stable from extra repo, something is up with my Flash where certain sites aren't seeing it, while others are. When it works, it plays fine. Here's some screenshots to illustrate what I mean:
When I start a new session of a Firefox all Youtube videos are in the small window (even when I'm logged in) and the first video I watch, to get it to the bigger window I click the enlarge button as seen: http://i.imgur.com/vmmSF.png
It plays fine in this little window, but when I click that button and it enlarges, it looks like this http://i.imgur.com/4xzoy.png
Sometimes it will play and I can hear the audio while I only have that grey rectangle. Now, I can hit refresh and it will play back fine now on in this larger size, but this does not occur on my laptop with Arch and same packages.
Then Vimeo, nearly all videos are like this http://i.imgur.com/zYkIT.png
And on Break I don't even see anything: http://i.imgur.com/SIkT2.png
Many sites tell me to upgrade my flash. Here is package info I am using just in case:

3850 PoE issues with AP3600 and AP3700
The switch is more than capable of providing 30 watts of power to the 3600AP yet it negotiates 15.4 watts and then I get errors in prime. Can someone explain how to fix this issue or what is causing the problem? Both radios are enabled so I would expect it to draw about 20 watts. We are seeing the same issues with 3700 series APs on the 3850 series switches. The APs tie back to a controller and not the 3850 switch

[Solved?] Installing multiple versions of Firefox at the same time
I would like to install the normal Firefox in the repositories and also firefox-pgo-minefield-smp from the AUR so that I may use either one as desired.
Looking at the current PKGBUILD from http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33506 (pkgbuild @ http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/firef … p/PKGBUILD ) I am thinking that perhaps I would modify this line:
export LDFLAGS="-Wl,-rpath,/usr/lib/firefox-$_prever -Wl,-O1,--sort-common,--hash-style=gnu,--as-needed"
to reflect the path where I would like to install it like so:
export LDFLAGS="-Wl,-rpath,/opt/firefox-$_prever -Wl,-O1,--sort-common,--hash-style=gnu,--as-needed"
And then presumably fix my symlink at /usr/bin/firefox to point back to /usr/lib/firefox-2.6 again. (and also fix the menu links and I realize I would have to use an ugly 'pacman -U tarball --force' to install it -- there's got to be a better way as that is very ugly and wrong surely???? Perhaps modify the pkgname as well as conflicts and provides so I could install it more normally?)
Correct? Would I also need to modify a prefix or such besides this and if so where in the pkgbuild (ideally) or source would you recommend (must I change the actual makefile or does my modification in the PKGBUILD take care of this? Would you in your experience recommend another approach for this?
I thought it wise to ask here before hacking away with this stuff and possibly hosing my system in unforeseen ways. Please forgive my greenness. I have spent a few hours researching this but still am not quite sure thus I ask. While I think I could do it with a straight compile with a modified configure I'm unsure of how to do it best using the arch tools...
Thanks for your time.

So I've figured out how to do this, it works, but not yet optimally and I am unsure about some things. Namely:

It seems as though it is a bit messy, as if I have more than I need installed. Especially the two entries in /opt/lib/. Do I really need all this?

^ A dirty hack to download the latest nightly of the electrolysis tree, pgo optimized for an intel i686 P4 (not native to get around the seg fault bug). I just commented out the .desktop files as well as the icon for now. Also the conflicts and provides section have merely been commented out. The goal is to have this work independently from the standard firefox allowing me to run both on the system at the same time.
Anyone see anything that I have missed and could fix as far as doing the separate install in /opt using makepkg and the pkgbuild? I've been using arch less than a month and this is the first I've really hacked with a PKGBUILD and mozconfig so I feel I could really use the help. Any insight appreciated greatly.
