Beryl/ATI problems

I used to have XGL/Compiz working with fglrx drivers at one point a few months ago. I stopped using it however after I noticed that it made video playback use 100% CPU (since it couldn't use Xv).
Today I decided to see if things had improved over the months and tried running Beryl with both XGL/fglrx and AIGLX/ati in KDE. In both cases "dbus-launch beryl-start" failed to do anything but kill kwin and complain in ~/.beryl.log as follows:
beryl: No manageable screens found on display 0:0
It also complained about another WM already running on the display, but I thought this was normal as it then proceeded to kill kwin.
In the AIGLX case I had direct rendering working fine according to glxinfo and glxgears. I also had Composite enabled and working perfectly (checked with KDE transparency support). /var/log/Xorg.0.log contained no errors and seemed to imply that DRI initialization had gone just fine.
Has anyone else has run into the same Beryl error message and/or found a solution?
EDIT: Oh, and my video card is a Radeon Mobility 9600.

Hi! The movie performance problem is due to your driver. compiz/beryl can't make it faster or slower unless you use blurring or water.
Have you tried to use mplayer with gl2?

    i am running 2.13GHz overclocked from 1.73
    kt4ultra
    768 ddr400 running at 333MHz
    ati 8500le

I've done that, but the problem still exist.
I think it's more like a BIOS problem since there's no problem when I'm runnign 1.1 instead of 1.3

  • ThinkPad T500 - ATI problem

Hello! I have a ThinkPad T500 from 3 years at my office and i decided to buy it for me. These years it worked just with his Intel GMA 4500 MHD. At my home, i tryed to switch it to ATI Radeon 3650 and......there is the problem!!! First I installed the driver, at Device Manager says that the ATI video card works. Entering in Bios/ Config/ Display, i maked these settings  After Presing F10 , it restarts and.......nothing.... I plugged a VGA monitor and it looks: And.... And After this image it goes to this error!!!!!!!!  Where is the Problem?thI can switch again to the Intel GMA and it works perfect....I tryed to install an original ati driver and the switchable graphic from Lenovo and...same problem.I SHOULD MENTION THAT THE ATI DOESN;T WORK ON THE LAPTOP LCD....IT WORKS JUST ON VGA!!!!!!After all....In Devide Manager says that the device cannot start and finally.....In the Device Manager appears just the Intel Video Card. What can i do? I need some more performance in some games......This laptop was new.....and it never runs with the ATI video....this give me a hope that the ati is not Broken!!!!This Laptop runs just AutoCAD....about 3-4 hours per day.  Specifications: Intel Core 2 DUO T9600 @ 2.8 GhzRAM: 4Gb DDR3 1600 MhzHDD: 320 Gb

It is hard to diagnose from far away, but my guess is that the video memory in the ATi video is bad.

Has O2 given you a new SIM? You could have a bad SIM. If a new SIM doesn't correct the issue, the next step would be a trip to the Genius Bar to get the phone checked.

  • ATI problems?

I've read in these forums that there are problems with the ATI card in iMac G5's, that will be fixed eventually in a future update. Does anyone have any info on this or is it just a rumor?

Yes thanks, these are exactly the same issues I had. I installed the update and the game is still very choppy and doesn't work as it should. I returned it to the store for a full refund. I was shocked to not have a hassle with the store over returning opened software, but the man told me that since the OS is still so new, they see a lot of products that just don't work as they should. I don't believe the problem is in the OS, I believe it is in the game which is designed for PC with a fake Mac version as a second thought. I don't think they put any effort into making it work on a Mac after reading about so many negative experiences. I wasn't too pleased with the layout of simcity 4 anyway, I much prefer simcity 2000. I wonder if I could run my old version in classic? It's on floppy disks, so I would have to find someone with a floppy drive (do they even make them anymore?) Anyone have any success running an old version of simcity in classic? The system requirements say system 7 or higher. Guess that would include 9 right?

  • Beryl - ati driver

I have an x1800 GTO card and i want to use aiglx, is this possible with and ati card? also can i use the drivers from ati's site with beryl?

While editing the ATI wiki page I found out your card is not supported by the oss driver.  http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/ATIRadeon
Cards below this point have no acceleration support

  • Arch crashes! Propably kernel or ati problem

Hello everybody, I have a problem after upgrading to the 2.6.33 kernel. Everything was fine when I used the 2.6.32 with the git versions of ati driver plus radeon_ucode. Now I dont want to use the git versions of ati, because there is kms support in the official repos versions. So I have 2.6.33 kernel with ati drivers + radeon_ucode(otherwise I have white screen running compiz).
Arch crashes randomly, but mostly when watching flash videos or other videos(with smplayer). By saying crashes I mean I get a black screen and I have to reboot manualy.

Check the logs and try UMS mode.

  • DV7 6010 ev ati problem

I own this laptop Dv7 6010ev for 4 years now. had no problems with it untill one month ago. many games suddenly couldnt see my ati 6770m with 1gb  and only saw the intel 3000 that also has (switchable graphics). before starting replying for drivers etc etc i would like to tell you i use computers from 1984 and i know this stuff.
my windows are fully updated, my drivers are omega drivers (latest driver) ,  and everything was working perfectly.
speedfun after this happened when i use the ati card gpu temp is zero 0, before this happens it was showing temps perfectly. when i use the intel 3000 it shows temp fine. tryied some older drivers with no luck.
i was searching for a used ati 6770m card in ebay and found some in differend colors. black for mac, green /blue for win. when i open my laptop i was surpised cause i couldnt find a slot with a pluged ati card. my heat sinks are on two chips . one soldered (small one) and one that you can take it out with turning a screw to unlock it and just pull it out.(bigger one).
i cleaned both chips replace it with new thermal paste. turn it on but no luck again. so my question is where is my ati card ? is it the chip soldered on my motherboard ? or it is the chip that you can take it out ?
posting a pic i found in the internet it like my motherboard. the red arrows shows where the heatsinks are connected. how can i replace my ati 6770m . is it solderd on the motherboard ? can i replace it with a better one ? any help ?

  • Beryl init problems [solved]

So I heard about Beryl on these forums and thought I'd try it.  I have Beryl, XGL, and some Beryl manager apps installed on a laptop with a 7900 GS video card running the closed-source nvidia drivers.  My window manager is XFCE4, and I normally run it on xorg.  I installed beryl-manager via pacman, and when I run the Beryl Manager from the XFCE menu, I get a gem in the system tray.  I right-click, select Select Window Manager, and click Beryl, and all I see is my desktop icons shift around a bit.  If I go back to the same menu, the xfwm4 radio button is still selected.
If I try to run Beryl from a terminal within X via XFCE4, I get this:
    [root@myhost ~]# beryl

  • New kind of ATI problems

I got the drivers to install properly by running the graphic installer, running fglrxconfig and using the appropriate settings, adding fglrx to the modules list in my rc.conf, and commenting out the vga section in my xorg.conf. Upon the first boot with the new driver; they work correctly and I get direct rendering. However, when I reboot, I lose direct rendering. What could be causing this?

Sorry, I fogot to put my system here!  :-D)ah, I will try to download the framework, thx!
    So, my system is:
    Msi 875 neo series
    p4 2.8 1mb prescott
    2x 256 ddr 400 dual
    seagate 120G
    Ati 9800 pro 128mb
    power supply 500w generic
    sound blaster live 5.1
If anyone has any ideas....plz post...

  • AMD 6590 with ATI problems

ok, I have a 2100+ with the 6590 and a Ati 9500 Pro with 512 of corsair memory.  When I play battlefield 1942 the computer sometimes restarts, and this also happens sometimes in windows.  Im kinda thinkin it may be my heatsink, but its a volcano 9, it should do the job.  I set the bios, so the CPU critical temp is disabled, thinkin that would solve it, but it still doesn't keep stable.  It also may be the video card or something, but im thinking it is heat related.  Please let me know if ya guys have any ideas.

hmm, maybe now Im thinking its the power supply, can anyone reccomend a good brand to look at?   mine is one I got with a case a while ago, its 400 wts, and it says its AMD reccomended, but it must not be enough, plus it was super cheap, im sure it will be worth my while to get a better one.

  • ATI problems, what does AMD says?

When I was a Windows user I was an ATI fan, unfortunately I keep this idea also in linux...
As you probably know ATI newer cards gives LOTS of trouble in linux as first there is no open source driver support and the closed source is unbearably slow.
After reading around in the Internet I understood the only solution is buying an nVidia. But I have a 2000$ expensive laptop and I do not have money to buy an other one atm...
I was wondering, do someone knows what AMD says officially about this? About the fact its customers says each other to buy nVidia? Will they make a decent driver soon or later?
I tried to seek in the official site but I do not found much, do someone know more?
I am wondering since I am considering to sell this computer hoping to obtain at least 1000$ and buy a new one, surely less capable (as spec) but with an nVidia so I can at least play high quality movies without frame drop.
(it is so bad that even if I use xterm when I am compiling something that does lots of output it happens X uses all the CPU not gcc.... :S )
    Sigh...
    Thanks.

Maybe ati drivers will get better.

  • K8N neo Platinum - Possible RAID & ATI problem?

Shortly after installing XP onto my new RAID 0 setup, I installed Direct X9, nVidia nForce3 drivers and the Radeon drivers. This combination worked fine before I set up RAID 0 so it should work fine this time, right?
    Wrong.
After I install the Radeon drivers, it asks for a reboot. Now normaly, it would reboot, windows XP would load and then the screen would go black for a second, then the desktop would appear. I guess this is the new driver kicking in and after that, I can reboot how many times I like and the screen woulden't go black because the drivers have already initialised. Right? With me so far?
This time, however, there is a huge delay before the screen goes black and the driver initialises. Even after it does, and windows is graphicaly alot faster, 3D apps take an age to load... like the 3DMark2003 logo will just sit there for ages, then finally load... the test itself isn't giving me the score I had before, it's a couple of hundred short, and there is nothing different about my system other than using RAID 0. Every reboot I get the same thing, a delay in driver initialisation... once there was even an area of the screen which was corrupted but it went away when I refreshed the desktop.
Can anyone shed some light on this? I can't believe RAID would cause this problem but I have no idea what else it could be... I doubt it's the K8N either, despite the numberous problems people have had.
One thing worth mentioning, it is a 9800pro flashed to XT (has the R360 core) and it's running at 9800XT speeds. It's run fine like this before, with the Artic Cooler installed, I hope it hasn't decided to start dying on me
Also, when I was trying to setup RAID 0, I had to use SATA ports 1 and 3?! I could not use 1&2 or 3&4 without problems with XP RAID setup during installation.
    I am not overclocking either...

Yea, I'm really mad because not only will this board not recognize my slave driver properly, it may have also killed my X800 Pro video card
I moved my working X800 Pro video card from my old MB to my new one and when I turned it on, the X800 Pro was dead.
I then reinstalled my old MB, hoping it was merely a faulty MB that was the problem, however, my X800 Pro is quite dead now
I'm not sure if it was me who damaged the X800 Pro or it was the MSI K8N motherboard - either way it's dead
My experence so far with my new MSI MB has been horrible !!

  • Another ATI problem - SIGH!!!

OK, I've done the stickies, searched all over the forum and others - and I still have a problem - and here it is....
Having just come back to MSI after my Epox killed itself - I treated myself to a nice 9800 pro - everything installed fine - did a clean install of windows as well. But my 9800 freezes when running any 3d games or benchmarks - literally. Run 3dmark (both versions) and the screen will freeze and not in the same place either - it could be a minute in or 3 minutes in - but it just freezes and locks the system. Same with Unreal 2003, Quake 3 and Toca Race Driver. There is no screen corruption, no artifacts, nothing wierd going with hard drives etc - just locks everything and requires a reboot.
And just to make matters worse, this is my second 9800 as the first didn't last a week!!!!
I've done the fast writes, 4x, voltage settings - even swopped my beloved Antec 550 PSU for a nasty little Jeantech 500W just to make sure there wasn't a problem with power on the rail feeding the 9800 (it doesn't share with anything else on the rail) No difference so put the Antec back in
So there you go - stumped!!! Anyone have any suggestions (not get a Nvidia!!!!)

    SOLVED!!!!!
I had tried the omega drivers, no overclicking anywhere, bios and msi drivers where all up to date.
Drastic measure - but I tried the card in my old MSI KT333 with an AMD 1800XP and it worked fine, ran all the benchmarks without locking. So I've now a new Nforce2 board but not MSI (booo! I hear!) An Abit NF7-S with virtually the same specs as the MSI board, raid etc - all now rock solid (same memory setup, same Audigy2 - sorry but does sound better than the soundstorm). Also one thing to note - the Abit has much more clearance around the cpu socket - I have a large footprint heatsink and it was a real squeeze next to the capacitors - could nudging oen of those caused the effects????
I would have tried another MSI - but couldn't get one - but there you go all done now
Thanks all for you help now and in the past - over to the Abit forums now

Built a htpc based on the RS482M4-ILD which is working great. The only problem I've got is that when the board is brought out of S3 standby using the MS Media Centre remote, it stops working - its like the USB ports aren't being re-initialised properly, The only way to get the remote working again is to unplug it and re-insert it.
    Any ideas?
