Beryl - finally works great here on Radeon 9800 with DRI

pacman just updated beryl to:
[jp@darkwood ~]$ pacman -Q |grep beryl
beryl-core-svn 1119-1
beryl-dbus-svn 1090-1
beryl-manager-svn 1117-1
beryl-plugins-svn 1118-1
beryl-settings-svn 1090-1
and finally it works great!
To run it you need to set some options in xorg.conf (look in wiki), then just run:
[jp@darkwood ~]$ beryl-manager
Everything works very, very smooth on my Radeon 9800 with DRI drivers (no fglrx!).
I found only two problems:
- I can't make movies and OpenGL applications transparent
- I can't play movies in gl/gl2 (mplayer), they are flickering

for the first time ever, Beryl+AIGLX works perfect with open source DRI on my radeon 9800..

  • I had completed my iDVD project and burned a disc. It worked great! Then someone messed with the project and put a red frame around the opening screen. Now when I burn the project, it no longer has the opening frame. How can I fix?

I had completed my iDVD project, a Wedding Slideshow with pictures and music, and burned it on a disc. It worked great! Then someone messed with the original project on my computer and clicked around and put a red frame around the opening screen that has the Wedding theme with music. Now when I burn the project to make more DVDs, it burns but no longer has the opening frame. It immediately opens to the iMovie slideshow. How can I fix so I can burn the entire project with opening frames?

As Bengt suggested make a disk image of the successfully burned DVD using Disk Utility. Then you can burn copies any time you need one.
In the future once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
You can then burn it to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Radeon 9800 Pro died, need a new card

Like many of the users here, my Radeon 9800 pro is displaying the verticle lines of death. Crappy thing is this is the second card I've been through in three years, and my warranty is now expired. I need to get a new card but am not sure which will be compatible with my first generation dual 2.0ghz G5. Is the 9600 comprable to the 9800? Will the X800 work in my machine. Sorry, I really know nothing about these things so figured better to ask on these forums. I'm certainly going to stay away from another 9800 though.
    Thanks for the help

AMD bought ATI, so their web site is in chaos, as well as their possible future with Apple.
Supposely ATI is going to make combined CPU and GPU's on the same board.
The fastest AGP card still available in great quantity before the company was bought was the X800 XT Mac edition, with a ADC and a Dual Link DVI port. (can use regular DVI as well)
My advice is to get this card, the DP PowerMac G5 is still a great workhorse, sold a lot of units when introduced and will last considerably longer provided it's not crippled by a poor video card. You should be able to find this card online in many locations or calling ATI directly.
I got myself a 9800, a X850 XT and a Nvidia 6800 GT (the best, quietest, coolest, none available new unfortunatly) just so I can prolong the life of this Dual PPC G5 machine.
Also if you plan to get more hard drives, be aware that Western Digital (especially) has a newer SATA interface that our machines native SATA can't handle very well. You'll need a Firmtec bootable SATA PCI card to bypass the native SATA.
So if your hard drive dies, you might be up the creek, booting off a external drive.
Remember to update your driver software occassionaly, backup data first of course.

  • Getting two Displays to Work on a Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition

    Hi Folks
I am reallt having difficulties here. Let me explain:
    1. I have a Power Mac G5 (2004) Dual 2GHz WITH 2GB Ram (http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G5_June2004.html)
    1. I have just purchaed two 24" Dell Displays that come with DVI and VGA leads (http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=bsd&cs=ukbsd t1&sku=59234).
    2. I have also purchaed Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition 256 DDR (http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon9800/radeon9800proseme/specs.html).
    3. I want to connect both displays to my 9800. One of them can go into the DVI port, but what do I need to get the other monitor working on the 9800? I presume I will need some kind of adapter?
I have spent literally hours, and hours seaching forums and google to find the answer to this.... just can't find the solution.
If anyone can help I would be indebted.
    Thank you so much.

    Hey Hatter
Thats great. I have already bought the 9800 so unfortuantly Im committed. I managed to get it for about $200 brand new so I felt that was a reasonable price.
I have pruchased the following adapter - http://www.pcwb.com/catalogue/item/GEFEN068?speedtrapid=froogle&lead=froogle
Thanks so much for the advance....your a star mate!!

  • Stock Radeon 9800 Pro card from a G5--- Will it work in my G4 Quicksilver?

I am thinking about purchasing a stock Radeon 9800 Pro card that came with certain G5 machines and use it in my G4 Quicksilver 867mhz machine. I heard that this works. Is it true? Can I download the drivers from the ATI website? Are there any issues I should be aware of? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi-
If it is the OEM 9800 Pro, then it is an 8x AGP, backwards compatible to 4x AGP.
Your QS is 4x AGP, and the card should work.
    Drivers are here:
    http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/mac/macosx10-4x-3x-radeon.html
The 9800 is a great card!

  • Radeon 9800 Pro fan not working

Last Fall I purchased a used Radeon 9800 Pro card to install in my Sawtooth. When I finally got around to flashing the card with Mac-compatible firmware, and then attempted to use the card, I discovered that the fan was not working. As I recall, the card worked briefly under a light load, but could not handle a heavy video load. How likely is it that the card will work properly when I replace the stock fan (with the Vantec all-in-one -- BTW, thanks, japamac, for pointing that fan out as a space-saving alternative to the Zalman VF here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7785260 ),
or is it quite possible that the card is fried and won't ever perform adequately again. Is it possible that I will install the new fan, only to learn that the card still buckles under a heavy load?

    Hi-
With the 9800 Pro, if the card is run for any amount of time without a fan, the chances are good that the GPU is cooked.
How cooked, will only be shown by putting a fan on the card, and trying it.
but how to know whether this is the case beforehand?
Pull the fan and put a replacement on. That's all you can do.
Get a replacement bury frame fan, and replace the fan in the ATI heatsink.
If it doesn't work with a new fan, sell the set as junk on eBay.
You'll get, at least, the cost of the fan out of it.

  • S-Video not working on ATI Radeon 9800 Pro????

I've had this ATI Radeon 9800 Pro in my MDD dual 1.25 G4 for a little while with two VGA monitors. I recently got rid of the secondary monitor and moved a 27" flat screen tube TV next to the computer. As I always do, I've got to start tinkering. I remembered that my Radeon has both VGA, DVI, and an S-Video outputs. I simply ran an S-Video from the card to the TV. I can't seem to get it to work. I had never used the ATI control panels so I went ahead and downloaded and installed it. It won't "detect" the TV in the Mac2TV control. What the heck am I doing wrong???? I emailed ATI and they just sent me a form reply to a dead link saying that my system is unstable. UGH!
    Any tips would be great.
    Thanks much,
    Robert

Well, I figured out that if I reboot and only have the s-video attached and no monitors to the VGA or DVI it will work. It dedicates the TV as the primary screen. However, not the best picture. I can't find any information if both the s-video and VGA or DVI can operate at the same time. I'm also doing a little more research with ATI to see if they actually have a true component output from either the VGA or DVI. I had bought a DVI to what I thought was supposed to be component but it was actually RGB component and just gave a distorted image. If I can get that to work, I think it would be a better image along with being able to run both the monitor and the TV as the secondary.

  • 30', not work with radeon 9800

Today I got the 30' and plugged it to my PC (old radeon 9800 pro as video card), dvi connection. But after displaying the windows XP logo, the whole screen starts to flash in different colors - right, nothing was displayed but all those colors. Checked all the cables, connection, not work; and stwiched back to my old sony 19', it's fine.. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
The 9800 does not have a dual link DVI as required to support the 30" ACD. Though the 30" can probably be used at a maximum resolution of 1920x1200 on a 9800, you will need to set the resolution through your display controls. The 9800, though, will not support the 30" at optimum resolution. You will need a different graphics card with a dual link DVI.
If you don't have the WinACD driver, you may want that.

  • Will the following ATI Radeon 9800 Pro work on a G4 MDD?

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, 128MB DDR, and I'm wondering if anyone can verify if it will work on a G4 MDD. It was bought for a G5, but that G5 doesn't exist.
Embossed on the front of the card it says:
    PN: 109-a14400-01
On the back there are 3 stickers:
    1) J53480YRQ74B 603-4070
    2) SN + PN: 102A1440103 000009
    3) J53480YRQDMA 630-4908
On the metal back-plane it has etched: 805-5422-A
The card has 1 ADC connector with 25V/4A Max written beside it, and one DVI.
Google brings up some hits, but nothing definitive concerning G4 vs G5.
    Thanks in advance!

If it looks exactly like this one, including the "teeth" along the bottom, it won't work in any G4.
This card has an "AGP Pro" connector, which gets all of its power through the slot (it has no molex connector).
Even if the card was cut to physically fit in a G4, the AGP slot in a G4 (any model) can not provide enough power for a 9800. It would fry the G4, the card, or both.

My wife had a problem with her iPhone 5C with no voice on the Maps app.  I visited my local Apple store and they said the problem was in iCloud.  We did a new install and it works great now.  Now 4 days later my iPhone 5 that is tied to the same iCloud has the same problem with the Maps app.  I really don't want to go through a new set-up with my iPhone 5.  What's going on with iCloud?

I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.
turning of locator and the push notifications from facebook--they have a lot!

  • ATI/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP 4x/2x in Gigabit Ethernet dual 450 PMac G4

    Hi,
This is my first time posting to these discussion group... I've been going through related threads and have not found an answer to my problem...
I have a Gigabit Ethernet dual 450 G4. Awhile ago I upgraded the processor to a Sonnet 1.8ghz so I could run Leopard.
I just bough the ATI/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP 4x/2x video card. I researched around and that seemed to be a card that would work in my machine. I even read a review on Amazon where someone had also upgraded to the 1.8 processor used this card with no issues.
I do have an older monitor - Apple Studio Display CRT with the ADC connector. So I also bought the Apple DVI to ADC adapter kit.
I installed the card and do not get any picture at all - I believe I have installed everything correctly. I'm pretty sure I can hear the fan on the video card in the machine. The monitor is getting power from the adapter since the button lights up when I press it - but it does not stay lit -- the monitor never turns on. Using my old graphics card the monitor makes a little "beep" when it turns on.
In reading the other topics I am wondering if it might be a power issue? According to Other World Computing's profile my machine has a max of 220 watts. Although they suggest this video card as one the will work in my machine.
I have disabled the hard drive that came with the machine (too small) and am using two Maxtor hard drives that I added - one ATA (120gb) and one SATA (500gb) that is connected to an SATA pci card. I also have two additional pci cards with usb 2.0/firewire ports.
In looking at the topics here I came across the link about taping the 3 and 11 pins on the video card. Even though the card I have is 4x/2x not 8x I thought I'd give it a shot. That did not work either.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I don't wish to sound redundant here, but I've been reviewing the vendor's page:
It's OK- I don't mind beating this dead horse....
The maker says such to protect themselves from possible claims that may arise due to over loaded systems and power problems when their card is installed in said system.
Of course, 300w would be nice, but they didn't even specify the PSU rating a couple years ago. The Sawtooth, with it's 237w PSU, used to be listed as a compatible machine for the 9800...... They just didn't consider how far a Sawtooth might be modded.
Within reason, the early G4's (Sawtooths) are capable of using the Radeon 9800 Pro. The GE has the same 338w PSU as the DA (they are interchangeable), so there is plenty of power for the 9800.
One thing to remember, the requirements of the ADC port of the AGP slot are removed by using a non ADC card. This really changes the calculations of the power available.
It's kinda' a long post, but, if you care to get ALL the details, check the following:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7065653&#7065653
I think you'll be satisfied with the explanation.......
Which leaves your second, and very appropriate, point.
The main enemy of all, though, isn't power. Heat is the biggest concern.
Reducing heat/increasing cooling by using a third party fan on the 9800 is highly recommended. The 9800 is a hot card, and the stock fan is prone to early failure.
Adding additional cooling to remove the extra heat produced by the 9800, by using an exausting PCI fan, will also help the PSU provide adequate voltage to the system, by reducing the amount of hot air moving out of the PSU.
Super heated air moving through the PSU reduces the cooling ability of the PSU. A hot PSU doesn't produce reliable power.
So, add the 9800, add some cooling, and enjoy!
