BES versus BIS

I've read a number of posts on this topic and I'm still unclear. I have a Blackberry 8330. I pay for it myself; my employer does not pay for my communications. However, I do access my work Exchange server (among other things). Bo I need to pay $44.99 for the BES plan, or am I OK with the $29.99 BIS plan?

Hey,
If they have the Blackberry Enterprise Server loaded at your workplace, then you can use the BES, which is $44.99.  The main difference, is you can wirelessly sync your Outlook contacts and calendar with your Blackberry.

  • 8800 Migration from BES to BIS

I was originally using BB via BES.  I left my employer and loaded Desktop Manager on my home PC.  I set up POP3 accounts and have been receiving email on my BB, but I have been unable to synchronise my calendar, contacts and other details between my desktop (via MS Outlook) and my BB.  When I try to do so, I get a message that says such things are done wirelessly.  If I try to change the settings via configuration, the message changes, to say that only the calendar is being done this way, but my addresss book / contacts are not being updated either.  Do I need to sign up to BIS to take advantage of these features?  Is there any other way to manage this issue?  Are there any issues presented if I have more than one folder in my contacts in MS Outlook?  Any and all help is very much appreciated, as I get nowhere with seeking assistance from my mobile service provider or BB directly.
    Solved!

I'm a bit confused by your response.  If the applications are not on the device, then what is - only the icons?  And they should interact with the software that I have on my desktop.  Is that right?  But I will only see the icons if the device manager software is up to date.  Is that right?
Assuming so, without knowing about the intermediate step, I did try to update the software, and unfortunately have had a very bad experience.  The device is not working at all even though I can see that the power is on.  And it is not recognised by desktop manager either.  I've been on to Vodafone and am expecting a new device early this week.  Assuming all current software is loaded, I will try your further instructions and hope for the best.
As matter of interest, how can I see what software is loaded and what version of such software to be sure that I have what I need to be successful?

  • BES to BIS

Hi i just brought this blackberry storm 2 on eBay and it has BES and I would like to change it to BIS. I tried using the policy bin but my blackberry desktop manager 6 is constantly on BES and I don't know how to change it. All I have is the pin and the BES says it is not activated. Can anyone help?

the carrier has to do this, they have to add in the more expensive BES plan.

  • Blackberry 8220 - BES to BIS problem

Hi, i have this problem, when i go to setup->setup wizard->email setup
the only option that appears is: "I want to use a work email account with a blackberry enterprise server", i don't have the option to set my personal email, so i click the next button and the device ask me if i have a password for BES that i don't have, so i choose the NO option and it says that i have to contact the enterprise server administrator.
I found possible solutions and tried with them but none of them worked.
First i tried updating my device software (didn't work), i also reset the device with the wipe handheld option on security options, i thougt that it had worked but nope.
Tried calling to the phone company but they told me that i have to go to the blackberry page and update my device software...
Is there any solution to this problem?
i hope i can get some help.

    1. Who is your carrier?
    2. Do you have THE BlackBerry Data Plan on your carrier account? You must, in order to get the personal email setup icon.

  • Problem connecting BB 8900 to Alt-N MDaemon BES/BIS

    Hello Everyone,
I have recently upgraded our mail server to MDaemon 12 Blackberry Edition. This gives us the functionality for BES and BIS.
So, in order to test the platform I have a user that has a Blackberry Curve 8900.
I tried following the directions that MDaemon gave us to "subscribe" the phone to our mail server, but I seem to be stuck.
When accessing the E-mail setup function on the Blackberry, it gives her two options:
    Set up an email account
Set up an enterprise email account
When I select the first option, it opens up a web browser and links her to the T-Mobile site where she needs to enter an account. She says that she can go through the website on a browser on the PC and do it as well, though when she does this, it does not ask her for a incoming and outgoing server??? Yet she still receives company emails (this was how she had her work account set up before we upgraded our mail server to the BB edition). How this works... I have no idea, as I thought she needs our incoming and outgoing server. (We deleted her old work/pre-upgrade account as MDaemon's instructions stated.)
When I select the Enterprise email option, it asks whether her BB account has a BES password, which I set up for her on the server, and then proceeds to ask for the username (full email address), a password (which I assume is the BES password (poor wording on the device btw)), a mail server, it lists that Blackberry's pin, and then the option to "Activate".
We set all the settings, and proceeded to activate the phone. It then stated that it was activating the phone and started to initialize it's settings (which took about 5 - 10 minutes). I also looked on the server and saw that the BES integration listed her phone's account/ pin.
Only one problem.... where is the account accessible on the phone?? We saw no feature or function for her to access our company's/her  work email account? The only accounts we saw were the personal gmail and yahoo accounts she'd set up through the T-Mobile website.
    Help!?

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Nope. The level of data plan that one has only defines the level of services that can be made available. With BES, if an IT Policy restricts some of those services (e.g., BBM and PIN messaging), then those services are simply not available on that BB. So, changing plans will have no effect on this service being blocked by the IT Policy for as long as that IT Policy exists on the BB.
    Good luck!

  • BES vs BES/BIS Service - Restrictions?

    Hi
I have a BB Curve 8900 and I have BIS service on it.  I have friends and colleagues who have BES service on their BB Bold 9700.  Company IT Policy restricts them from adding me on their BBM.  They receive my invite and accept it but it goes into the void.  I am also able to send them PIN msgs and they receive it but they can not reply to them.
My service provider provides a service called BES/BIS where both BES and BIS are provided.  I have taken this now and still have the same problem as before.  My question is, if my friends subscription is changed to BES/BIS will that allow them to communicate with me on the BBM through the BIS?
    Thanks.

  • BIS Setup with AOL

I recently changed my 8700c from BES to BIS and established both of my AOL accts (one is a secondary to the master AOL acct). Two messager folders were created in addition to the standard message folder.  The two new folders each reflected the AOL email address.  There appeared to be a problem since not emails would show up.  A technican at my former employer suggested a "wipeout" of the 8700c and strat over.  I just did that and the two message folders reflecting AOL did not appear.  When I accessed the Personal Email Setup on the device, one of the two AOL email addresses already showed.  I went to AOL and sent a message from the other AOL and it arrived on the device in the message folder and in AOL.  I then set up the second AOL address, which is the master account, and a new message folder was creted with that address.  The standard message folder now receives messages for both AOl address.  Also, if I choose an email address from the address book, I don't have a choice as to which of the two AOL addresses to send it from.  Appreciate any thoughts anyone has on how to have two separate folders, one each for the two AOL accounts and they not be intermixed.  Thanks  Bill

It's normal for all messages to show in the Messages folder and their respective email folder.
As for why there is no option to send from the aol email addresses is probably due to an IT policy leftover on the device from the BES.  I recommend removing the IT policy:
    http://www.blackberryforums.com/general-blackberry-discussion/67224-remove-policy.html
I recommend using method 1 if AT ALL possible as it's the method that actually removes the policy altogether.

  • How does Facebook application utilize Blackberry push based architecture?

    Hi Friends,
I have posted this message in Blackberry Java Development forum. But was told that "if you are not RIM you will not be able to use the push-architecture with BIS".
Here goes the actual message. Please provide your valuable inputs.
I am developing an Blackberry client application which will be similar to Facebook application for Blackberry.
Since, this application can be  download by any blackberry user who would be subscribed to different BES or BIS, how will the push based architecture of BB work here.
See my previous post 'Push content to devices on different BES' (http://supportforums.blackberry.com/rim/board/message?board.id=java_dev&message.id=3196&jump=true#M3196), which says that push will work through BES.
    If that is the case,
How does the FaceBook application for Blackberry work?
Users who download the Fackebook application will definetly not be on the same BES or might be on BIS as well.
Then how will Facebook application receive notificatios and messages instantly using blackberry's push architecture?
Does RIM provide any framework or support for developing facebook like applications which would utilize push architecture irrespective of BES or BIS?
    Thanks,
    Suresh.

Facebook doesn't use the BlackBerry network, it uses the standard data network.  If you're on BES, that typically is routed through your BES server.  If you're not on a BES, it will use BIS.
I don't believe the application is a "push" application either - it's more likely a real time IM client.

  • Looking for an app that...

I am looking for an app to track something I do periodically easily. For example, there is a medication I take sometimes and I would like to go to a calendar type page and click on the date and have it record that I took that medication on that date.
The apps I have found require a lot more data entry each time. Just want something very simple to track this task.

Are you all using BES or BIS? If you're not on a BES then you can use a program called Google Sync. If you all have a gmail account you can use this program to wirelessly sync between your BlackBerry calendar and Gmail calendar. Read more about it here

We have a small group of managers who have blackberry's and were wondering if there is an app that would allow us to easily download our individual schedules to our phones.  We currently use excel to create the work schedule and even though we can view it through email it would be nice be able to plug it in with our calendars.  Any help would be Great!

  • PDF attachments on emails

Newbie here - looking for an answer: I receive an email on my phone (8530Curve) and I can see there is an attachment but when I go to the same email on my PB, no attachment shows - there's nothing there. Back to my phone or pc and it's there - I even forwarded it to my gmail account from my pb and went to gmail on line on my PB and there it was! what gives? I work with a lot of PDFs and I'm concerned that I can't rely on my pb if I can't even see an attachment exists. Thoughts - feedback help would be appreciated. Thanks.

OK - here's the IT guys response:
Please note that BES and BIS are BlackBerry abbreviations and I can not say that our email server is BES or BIS. We are using Exim email server to handle our email service. It should be accessible from every device with Internet and availability for email services.
I have searched for your problem on Internet and found the following articles which may be helpful to you:

This is making me loco. I am not on a Blackberry Enterprise Server, so I didn't find any of the above helpful, although you might as you are far more familiar with the lingo and apps.  Again, I appreciate your time and help in resolving this. - Best!

  • Unable to send a first email with a new address.

I can answer any kind of mail but I'm not able to send a email for the first time when it's a new address. Is there any security to unlock somewhere? Thanks

    Hey MHB,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
When you send a new email message and you receiving a red X after you send the message?
If you do receive a red X, open the message and it should say why it failed.
Is your email setup on a BES or BIS?
What it comes down to, is that you probably have an issue with with your service books.
I would suggest removing your email service books and re-sending the service books.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
When you say "microsoft exchange email", do you mean BES or BIS via OWA?
If the former, go see your BES admins as they are in control. If the latter, try these steps:
    1) Register HRT
Homescreen > Options > Advanced Options > Host Routing Table > (it does not matter which line is current) > Register Now
    2) Resend Service Books
KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
    3) Batt Pull Reboot
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
Hopefully that will get things going again for you! If not, then you should try deleting and re-adding your BIS conduits for the affected email accounts.
