Itunes is OK, actually. The problem is when I click a file it adds to the library. It's OK. But if I like have 500 songs on an external HD USB then that's not OK. I wan't to just play the files without adding to the library and copying to the HD. I only have 6gb free so I have to keep it on an external.
So either find a way to keep itunes from copying everything to the library.
Or find another program besides itunes to play my files.

OS X needs about 10 gigs of HD space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on. Without this space the OS will slow down as it hunts for free space on the HD to store data, files will become fragmented (also slowing things down), apps are much more likely to crash and the risk of data corruption (your data: files, music, movies, photos) is exponentially increased.
You need to make space available on that disk and do it now.
Among other things, you can move your iTunes Library to the external disk:
Moving iTunes Music
and/or move your iPhoto and Aperture Libraries too:
1. Quit iPhoto (or Aperture)
2. Copy the iPhoto Library/ Aperture Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto/ Aperture. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

I'm not sure why this would happen. But I think I did see another post a week or two ago about this. Have you tried rebooting your computer and resetting your iPad.
To reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

HOW DO I LOAD MOVIES(BESIDES ITUNES STORE STUFF) ONTO MY IPOD

I figured out that by buying this particular program online, I could use it to convert most movie file formats to ipod movie files, but the process is time consuming, slow, and unreliable sometimes in terms of the fidelity of the final product versus the input file. Am I overlooking an easier way to do this that is built into the iTuanes/iPod system? Any infor would be a big help, thanks!

As above, when I uncheck "Manually manage music", I GET A BOX WARNING ME THAT ALL EXISTING CONTENT ON THE IPOD WILL BE REPLACED WITH THE CONTENT OF ITUNES if I don't want to manage music and videos manually. Until I click "cancel" in that warning box, iTunes is frozen and I can't do anything at all, let alone click "Apply" (which doesn't appear on the page anyway -- the box at the bottom right hand side is "Sync"). I get the same warning box when I check "sync music" in the Music tab.

My problem is a ghost apple id from an account dead and gone.Ever since I created a new apple id I have been haunted by the ghost of accounts past.It creeps out of the closet and shows up in all sorts of apps asking for a password that I do not, nor did I ever know. This makes sense to me. I think the issue is your misunderstanding. If you purchased an item, your Apple ID becomes tied to that permanently. So when you try to update that app, you need the password to the ID that 'OWNS' that application.
Also, I suspect you have a different ID signed into the device, which is why you can't buy with your own. That article listed shows how to change the signed in account.

Cannot see music in programs besides iTunes

I changed from an XP computer to a Windows 7 and copied all of my songs from the My Music folder from the old hard drive. My iPod plays fine, iTunes recognizes the songs and playlists, but when I use WMP 12, the device is not recognized at all, and in RealPlayer, the iPod is recognized but it says "(Internal)" after the name, and I cannot see the songs and playlists, though it recognizes that the iPod is half full.
When I go to Explorer, the music folder is empty. I can only see the songs by right clicking and selecting "Open as Portable Device" and finding the music folder within the iPod_Control folder. If I drag the music up to the first music folder, it duplicates the file and takes up space, (as if the iPod is partitioned), but then I can see the song in RealPlayer.
Any suggestions before I give up and click "Restore" in iTunes? I know I could simply do that, but it's the principle. Thanks!
PS - "Enable disk usage" is already checked, I've stopped and restarted Apple Mobile Service and I've been in and out of disc mode.

Listening to things besides Itunes wirelessly?

now that I have my Airtunes set up to play all my Itunes songs, I can not listen to any other websites through my speakers. No Youtube, CNN, band websites, Myspace pages, movies, etc., nothing though my speakers. Only my Itunes. The problem is that before my speaker cable went directly into my computer and now it goes straight into the Airport Express. Is there anyway to use my speakers though airport express now that I have it wired this way. If not, I would have to unplug the speaker cord everytime i want to surf the web and listen and watch things. Which would suck. Any sugggestions?

awesome. I knew there had to be away. It would be nice if it just output any sound from the computer so you do not have to tell it to play sound from Safari, Windows Media, Quicktime, etc. But this works great. And perhaps there is a way to let it take any sound once I figure it out. Thanks!

DJ program for mac besides iTunes

I have a duel USB ibook here with a 600 MHz processor and 256 mb of ram. I'm looking for some kind of DJ program I can use for this thing. I have 10.4.11 on this thing..I need a DJ program similar to something like Ultra Mixer or djay. It can be a program I have to pay for, or it can be freeware. I know I can use iTunes, but I prefer not to. I'm up for suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Thank you everyone! First off, I can't use Djay because the minimum system processor is a 1 GHz G4 processor. I have a 600 MHz G3 processor on this ibook. DJay runs because that was one of the first programs I tried. There's like no background, it like infinite. You know that id you have your camera plugged into a tv and you point the camera at the tv? It's just like that. I like that DJay prgram though, just wish it could run on such an old ibook. Thanks for the suggestion christopher!

I looked on that Version Tracker, and I could find software, but the thing is that I need some kind of program similar to either "Djay" or "Ultra Mixer" that works with this iBook I have. It has 256 MB or ram, 600 MHz G3 processor, and a hard drive that's about 20 GB with 12 GB left. All the music is already on there though iTunes. I prefer not to use iTunes though. Are there other podcasting tools besides iTunes?

When I listen to a podcast with iTunes, I always have to let the individual item download to my computer. There are podcasting tools available for Windows that allow for either streaming right from the server OR downloading. If I were to purchase an iPad, are there any podcasting tools available that allow for streaming podcasts that don't require downloading the item?

Does ANY player BESIDES iTunes stream from my iPad 2!?!?

I have an iPad 2 iOS 4.3.3 and apple tv 2 with latest update.I have tried buzz player,servio,vlc streamer but all I get is audio on my apple tv. I am extremely frustrated as I bought the apple tv for this purpose and feel I just paid for a useless audio player , as I don't want to listen to music on my tv.
Does anyone have any actual,useful experience with this that can sort me out?
What am I missing here? Before I bought it I read up on it and did not think I would experience this problem.

No that's not what i'm saying at all. A lot of 3rd party apps DO work, every single one i've tried has. iTunes may sell them, but they don't make them (hence 3rd party) and have no control over whether the developer enables video airplay. No you shouldn't need to know what API's are, but i'm merely pointing out that Apple released the function to developers and that it's then in their court.
It's not the product that's faulty in this case.
You would need to ask a developer why they make false claims. I have never seen one, but sometimes it may slip by.
Upgrading is a good general practice, and no it isn't of 'limited functionality'. You can mirror almost anything to the ATV. I've only seen a few that have blocked it, and it's for licensing reasons which is out of Apple's control.
Just because you don't like an answer doesn't mean it's unhelpful. Enough said.

You could get a third-party utility such as Anapod, Ephpod, or Xplay for handling the transfer. I haven't used any of these, so I can't make any recommendations. Note that these applications cannot connect to the iTunes Store. They also may not work with the most recent iPods, so confirm compatbility with your iPod model.

The iTunes Home Sharing feature applies to any items in your iTunes ibrary.

HT1551 Airplay problems trying to watch movies from another player besides itunes.

I just bought my apple tv and want to watch movies from my macbook without mirroring my whole computer screen. Is it possible to do that? Do I have to use itunes to airplay movies? I use a VLC player to watch movies and it does not give me an air play button. So the only way to watch my HD movies is to miror my whole computer screen and then it doesnt even give me audio. Audio only works with quicktime player with mirroring. Any tips/suggestions? And I have apple tv 3 it wouldnt give me the option to select it.

iTunes is the only app that can airplay natively, everything else is via mirroring. In terms of 3rd party apps there is one called beamer, it has a trial so you can see if it works for your needs.

What are "videos" besides itunes and imovie projects?

My system information says i have 76 GB in videos but I only have four movies and two TV shows on iTunes and no imovie projects/other large videos? What else could "videos" entail. Trying to free up some memory space. Thanks.

Where are you looking? When I look under System Preferences > About This Mac > More Info > Storage, I see a category called "Movies" but no category called "Videos". So I cannot imagine where you're looking.

Installed latest iTunes after a reformat of a XP sp3 system. Besides iTunes chronically not recognizing any of my iOS devices (pad, pod, phone, touch)

hi there thanks for your answer, i have tried 3 home hub routers today with the same results, the internet and safari are fine just itunes and app downloads seem to be erratic, i even bought some music from amazon to my laptop and downloaded fine, seems to be itunes and app store only. will try my friends wifi tomorrow to see if its different. thanks again

Case App - available anywhere besides iTunes?

Hey all.
Any word on whether Apple will put the case app up on the iPhone-accessed App Store? I was told by the Apple Store employee who set up my phone that I'd be able to sync using Tiger, and lo-and-behold when I got home, it didn't work. I'm scraping together money for a new Macbook, but until then I can't sync up to iTunes to get the app. Any word on the availability of this App outside of iTunes?

The other posts have answered your question but note that there is only one Apple app store and that one app store can be accessed from the iPhone or iTunes on your computer. Either can access all the available apps.
