Best 2 gb kit of memory for a K8N Diamond Plus ?

I have the Diamond plus mainboard on its way, should be here Monday.  I just received Wednesday a 180 opteron and a 2 gb kit of Corsair XMS 3500LL pro.  I installed these in an Asus A8N SLI deluxe and have spent the last day trying to unsuccessfully install windows, only to find out one stick of the XMS is shot terribly, 7,776 errors in the first 10 minutes of Memtest86.
So needless to say these sticks are going back.  I have never in my years of building computers received memory in this bad of condition before,  and although an isolated case it could very well be I have a very bad taste in my mouth considering the 300$ price of these.
I would welcome recommendations on 2 gb kits that would be suitable for this board and processor, preferably low latencey,  doesn't have to be more than PC3200-3500 since I am not an extreme overclocker,  tighter timings on a lower FSB are more important to me since I have a larger processor. G-Skill, Patriot, Mushkin? what works best for this board/bios?
thanks!

Grouse - I think you can increase your voltage to ram by moving the  jumper pins JV1 on the motherboard 1 - 2 to 2 - 3 which gives 3.1 volts and up. But by moving that jumper voids the warrenty of the motherboard. Well that's what the sticker on it says :(
Jumper is JV1 on the motherboard
Select DDR Power Jumper: JV1
The DDR Power Jumper is used to boost the DDR power. The BIOS will auto
detect the mode you configure by hardware and provide the properly selection for
DDR Voltage field. The hardware jumper setting and the software BIOS selection
have to complement each other.

I am so frustrated ... I have spent over 6 hours trying to find out which power supplies I can use with the MSI K8N Diamond Plus.
I am not able to find any PSU that has 24 pin, 8 pin and 4 pin power connectors ... do you have to get them custom made or something? I am in Switzerland and it is hard to track these things down if you do not speak the language.

    Off topic.
    Kenito443,
I see you have the Stacker830, was looking at that case myself. How do you find it performance / quality wise?
    Russell
Yeah i love it...the cooling is amazing, my case never goes above 30C and the cpu idles at 22c and never goes over 27C even when OC'd,.. granted i have substantial cooling for the cpu.  the case is completely tool less and boasts a up to 9 12cm fans...the case is double encased  Al so with a silent PSU (true 500W), which is my set up , it is extremely quiet. i was going to get the lian li until i saw both of them on display. the lian li seemed a little harder to set up for water cooling -if i wanted that option in the future, and the tool less feature for the cm stacker was a lot more appealing. Interestingly, it has its own proprietary hard drive noise reduction and cooling doohickey. Also, the mb has this cool pull out tray plus the PSU rail is really easy to accomadate for a larger  PSU. the store where i bought it from in santa clara CA threw in some of these nice dust filters with the case and I was sold. the only con was the price, i paid  around $230, which is a little expensive for a CM....oh and a word of warning , the case doesnt really look that big in pictures, but it is HUGE !! it has 10 5.25-inch bays..you can fit every single imaginable peripheral and still have room to fit your kitchen sink..i was definitely surprised to see how big it was in person.

  • Tips for my K8N Diamond Plus

so although i have been into hardware for awhile now i have never really been a big OC'er.  it was never something i really wanted to do since i work my arse off to get my hardware.  my buddy recently OC'ed his micro-ATX board with his AMD 3700+ from 2.2 to 2.9 on a stock heatsink and he is sitting stable.  this got me thinking and wanting to try out a bit of OC'ing just to see what i am able to push my system until i upgrade from my current CPU to a new 4400+ dual core.  so here is my system and im just looking for tips/a quick walkthrough of what i need to tweak to OC my box and keep it stable.
CPU: AMD 3500+ 939-socket, Newcastle core stock at 2.2ghz
MoBo: MSI K8N Diamond Plus with the 3.09 BIOS
RAM: 2x1gig sticks of PQI Turbo 400mhz/PC3200 timings of 3-4-4-7
    PSU: Sunbeam 550watt SLI certified
    Video Cards: 2x eVGA 7900gt's SLI'ed
that is basicly the big stuff, i have  a X-FI soundcard and all SATA HDD's and stuff but that stuff doesnt really matter too much when it comes to OC'ing.  anyways, im just looking for directions on what i should set my stuff to.  if you could also through in a run down of how HT, the multiplier, my FSB, and the DRAM/FSB settings affect each other i would really appreciate it.
basicly all i would need is something like this for my settings:
    multiplier:
    vcore:
    FSB:
    DRAM/FSB:
    mem timings:
    HT settings:
and anything else i have left out.
again, i would really appreciate the help.

first, the newcastle is socket 754, there is no newcastle core for socket 939.
    k8n diamond plus doesn't have a 3.09 BIOS.

  • Memory for MSI K8N Diamond

    Hi there,
I have a problem and I need your help. I have found on the MSI's site that the Mb on the object support the dual memory, well, after all I have checked the corasir and kingston site for the memory I wished to charge the mb, but, here in italy, many people told me that this kind of Mb doesn't not support the DDR2 memory, beacuse this one are made with 240 pins insteed of 184 pins.
Well, right now I am quite confused and I really need you tell me wich kind of memory I could install on this Mb. Someone have told about this memory  CORSAIR Memoria PC Value Select DDR2 1 Gb PC5300 (VS1GB667D2), but I have noticed it is not ddr400...so what can I do?
    Thankl for your support.
    Lught

Socket 939 Athlons do not support DDR2 Memory. That is a fact. It has nothing to do whatever with the MB as the memory controller is totally inside the CPU. The MB only has sockets for the memory and the circut traces to tie them to the CPU.
That said MSI does have a page http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=638&kind=1 that shows which CPU's work with the Board and AMD has pages about memory that has been tested and known to work with these CPU's.
Of course you can also look at folks signatures to see what everyone is using. There is also a hgreat deal of info in our sticky posts. https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=76899.0

  • Is this good ram for a K8N Diamond Plus?

And how would I go about Overclocking this ram?

It is good/ ok RAM.  You might expect about 480 Mhz out of this RAM at 1T.  Read the stickies on overclocking as this will answer most of your OC questions.  Many people round here like Mushkin Redline, and I used Kingston VR for my project.  Not the best stuff, but it works for a moderate overclock and extreme OC if you use memory dividers.
Search the forum for memory.  There are alot of threads on this.
Also post a sig with your components.  I know your building a rig, but we like to see what you have and where your going when we are answering questions.
Edit://  Sorry did more research on this stick of Mem,  Not good for OC.  Ignore my initial comments.

  • K8N DIamond Plus- 4 sticks of memory problem

I have a new Opteron 180 with a K8N Diamond plus mb. I am thinking about getting another 2g of memory to run with my current 2g of 3200 memory to speed up Vista even more.  I thought the new chips could run 4 sticks of memory at 400 with a command rate of 2t.  I wanted to try to see if it would work so I pulled two 512 pc3200 sticks from my wifes computer and installed it. At boot up it clocked the memory to 333 (which I expected it to actually) and I got into the bios and set it to 400 with 2t command rate and everything else at default settings.  All the memory is Kingston value ram.  The computer randomly booted and I had lockups at 400, but at 333 it ran fine, but I still couldn't run the memory at 1t with 333.  I am using bios 1.33 as the other bios's always set the HT bus wrong for me. Is this just a function of the motherboard or is the memory not compatable with each other? I thought the motherboard is irrevelant since the memory controller is on the cpu?
    Thanks for your help,
    Scott

The memorycontroller IS inside the CPU.
And some are lucky to get it stable booting at DDR400 with 4 sticks, some get crashes.
However, most have drop-backs to DDR333.
It's a CPU limitation when using unbuffered memory.
Buffered memory should be able to do it, however, I'm not quite sure as this is an S939 type CPU.
You could try something if you know somebody that has buffered memory.
Sometimes it helps if you lower the other timings.

I have the same motherboard with 4GB Ram. I had to enable the memory hole in the memory configuration of the bios for it to see the full 4GB. However, Windows 32-bit will not show the full 4GB ram since 32-bit addressing limit is 4GB and all your peripherals have to be included like vid card memory, etc. So don't beat your head against your desk once you get your bios seeing the 4GB and Windows 32-bit doesn't. My Vista gives 2.8GB ram of my 4GB, some get more, but I know I have two video cards with 768MB ram also. I'm using 1.2 bios.
Incidently, I ordered an OEM Vista X64, it will be interesting to see if it sees all my memory since 64-bit can go up to enormous addressing ranges.
    Good Luck

  • MSI-K8N Diamond Plus - which memory?

    Hello,
I will soon buy the K8N Diamond PLus motherboard. For that motherboard, I have selected the following memory: Corsair 512 Mo DDR-SDRAM PC3200 CMX Cas-2. But I can not find if this is ok for this type of motherboard. Does someone knows something about that?  ???
    Thx in advance!

    Marlysa,
I would suggest that you stay away from the corsair xms ram as i figured the sme thing when I built my system, that it,s Corsair and its the #1 selected ram and usualy the most compatible, But this is not the case with this motherboard it's very picky about hardware pretty much the same as DFI board's!!!
Of course the CORSAIR WEBSITE will tell you this they want youre money!!!!!! Their certainly not going to reccomend OCZ MEMMORY that's for sure!!!!!
Please reconsider youre decision as I myself have traveled down that road you about to take. Personaly I love Corsair ram and i certainly wont bash it, but  get the OCZ5002048ELGEGXT-K  it cost me $213.00 wth tax for 2 gigs instead of $160.00 with tax for the corasir xms 2- 512 sticks Believe me you will be thankful that you took my suggestion!!!!! with the new 1.20 BIOS at optimized default's it posts and configures itself automatically where as befor you would usealy have to configure it manually in bios to get it to post at 500mhz believe me this OCZ MEMORY ROCKS!!!!
Save youreself alot of this....      BUY IT!!!!!!
                                                                                                 Brother Esau
P.S just check around the forum their's alot of peop[le that have issues with the  DIAMOND PUS AND CORSAIR RAM.

  • Aftermarket HSF options for K8N Diamond Plus

Just built a new rig with the K8N Diamond Plus  and am very pleased with the board -- worked great from first power up and with a little BIOS tweaking I have no trouble getting a 50% overclock from my dual core Opteron 170.  No headaches at all, unlike my previous experiences with Abit boards.
The AMD heatsink fan unit (with heatpipes) provided with the 170 is not bad at all, but I'd like to replace it with a more capable unit, along the lines of the Zalman 9500, Scythe Ninja, Tuniq Tower 120, Thermalright XP-120, etc.  The tall heatsink of the Nvidia NB is close to the CPU socket and quite high, so I'm not sure if any of these will fit.  Anyone using one of these or similar heatsinks ?  Please let me know if they fit, or did not fit.
Since I could find any of the 7800GTX 512MB boards I wanted, I'm using a single MSI X1900XT card right now but plan to go SLI in the future with 7900GTX cards driving the 30" Dell monitor.  The ATI video board and nVidia mainboard surprisingly get along great, with no crashes so far and 3DMark06 scores above 6000 -- the X1900XT is an impressive piece, and much faster than the X800XT-PE I had in my previous computer.  But the fan can be extremely loud and the Catalyst Control Center sucks.  Unfortunately the old ATI control panel is no longer offered...

    TimeReaper,
The problems your are talking about are not uncommon with this MS-7220.  The BIOS Clear Circuit physically has problems and that is not something they are going fix with a BIOS upgrade.
The BIOS Clear Circuit actually trashing the values stored in the CMOS by not doing a complete clearing of the CMOS is causing the problem.  What leaves trash for parameters, for the BIOS to use when rebooting.
Let give you an example that fits your case.  You can set the BIOS to turn the system on at any give time and date.  So, if the trash in CMOS is in those parameters storage location.  Therefore, whatever trash value gets stored in the locations, as a dated and time, will turn the computer on at that time.  So, you could of had the computer come on in the meddle of the night two week later.  Now, think of all the functions the BIOS have and how many weird things people are having and do not know why.  There is one guy that is a regular on the Forum how has been fighting a problem I know is caused by trash in the BIOS CMOS, but Strick and I have ask him to do a good CMOS clearing and he just will not do it.  I even wrote out in great deal the over night CMOS clear procedure I use.  It is a pain in the ass, but some times, I have too use it.  I just had to use it, upgraded V3.09 using short CMOS Clear and had no problem.  Used the short procedure again when upgrading to V3.0A and everything when to hell, had to finally use the long overnight procedure and reinstall Windows to get computer to run right again.
NoBS, when your computer goes BOOO during the night just plain it o MSI.

  • WANTED! - List of IRQs and Hardware for K8N Diamond Plus?

    Hi there!
I'm trying to find out what hardware shares IRQs on the MSI K8N Diamond Plus motherboard.
I want to use an X-Fi card in the bottom (orange) PCI slot, and 2x 7800GTX cards in the PCI-Express x16 slots and would like to know if any of the devices will share IRQ's with onboard hardware.
You can list your IRQs by running msinfo32 - start, run, msinfo32 [enter], then click expand the following item in the tree System Summary -> Hardware Resources -> IRQs.
You can export the IRQ's in msinfo32, make sure the IRQ list is displayed, then click file/export, then save to a text file.  Open the  text file with notepad and copy and paste your results to your reply below.
I'm trying to find out whether an MSI K8N Diamond Plus will have less conflicts or less important conflicts than a ASUS A8N32-SLI.

    There are 4 PCI IRQs called INTA#, INTB#, INTC# and INTD#.
These INTx# are interrupts and are level sensitive, this means that the electrical singnaling allows for them to be shared among all PCI cards. All single device/ function PCI cards that use only 1 interrupt must use INTA# as this is one of the rules in the PCI spec. If there are additional devices within a chip or on-board a card then these additional devices can use INTB#~INTD#, since there are very few multifubtion PCI boards (none that I know of right off my head) this means that most or all devices will use INTA#.
With that said; you do not really need to worry about hard wired INTA#~INTD# at board level.
If you are using Win XP I would not even worry about IRQs as Windows uses "Virtual IRQ routing" which simply means Windows XP will assing IRQ to each device and XP handles this extremly well.

  • 4 year old MSI K8N Diamond Plus [MS-7220], best upgrade CPU

  • K8N Diamond plus HSF and memory compatability question

I am considering this board since I need a good onboard sound chip to utilize my front breakout box.    At this time I have an opteron 180, a Zalman 7700 and 2 gb kit of Corsair XMS TWINX2048-3500LLPRO on the way from ZZF.  I had planned on using this on an Asus A8N SLI deluxe but if the hardware is compatible I would rather have the SB onboard than the Realtek on the Asus.
Does anyone know if the Zalman will fit on this board and clear the northbridge heatsink and fan?  I had seen in another post the the MSI boards might not care for Corsair to well,  any validation on this?
    Thanks!

    Tricker61,
As you can see by my signature I am using the Diamond Plus with a full two pair of TWINX2048-3500LLPRO’s.
It was not plug them in a go, but it just requires setting the memory up manually, which is really set forward.
The only problem is that the current BIOS do not the memory to SPD values and here is a list of setting you will have to set manually.
    (1)   FSB/Memory Ratio is set by default to 1:2, which needs to be changed to 1:1.
    (2)   Memory Module Voltage Corsair spec is 2.7 – 2.9, default BIOS setting is 6.5V.  I am running mine at 2,75V.
    (3)   Corsair spec timing 2,3,2,6, BIOS Default is 2,3,2,5 so you need to set that.
As far as memory set for your Corsair memory you have they are working fine and system is stable.
You wanted 2.6 GHz; I am currently run FSB of 225 MHZ and with default multiplier of x12, which is one BIOS defaults that is correct.  My system running solid at 2.7 GHz and the memory is running DDR450, which better the Corsair spec.
Therefore, with the memory modules you should get the performance you said you wanted.  I feel with all the memory setting corrected I could running it up more, first 225 MHz is the speed I could not make with default BIOS setting and I am not and Over-clocker like you, if want a good solid fast system.
If you have not purchased a case yet, make it a big one with lots of fans.  I am using the Cooler Master CM Stacker 810 and have just moded the case to add two extra right side 120mm input fans in place of the stock 80mm fan and I am just starting to get the system temperatures under control.  With to two new fans that makes 4 120mm input fans and 120mm, 85mm and the power supplies 135mm fan for exhaust.  I have been using 120mm fan with 35 to 40 CFM each, to try and keep the noise down, but it looks like an a few more CFM to input fans and put up with the added.  But it is a nice system now, you the noise of the air flow , but no actual fan sounds, except for the Graphics Card when is cycles it fan to high speed, which much less with two add right side 120mm fans.
Hope this information helps you selecting components for your new system.

  • K8N Diamond Plus memory issue

    Hi all,
Just replaced my ASUS A8N32-SLi Deluxe with the above board (what an excellent choice, glad to be back on MSI!).
Anyway - my problem is this:
When inserting two x 1GB double-sided PC3200 modules, the BIOS auto detects the memory as DDR333 rather than the DDR400 it should be. Removing one stick immediately fixes the problem, and shows up as DDR400.
The memory is Micron - MT16VDDT12864AY
Now I noticed that these sticks are on the compatibility list, but with one slight problem - the ones listed show the last 4 digits differently, but how different can they be?
Any suggestions would be most welcome, I need my extra GB of memory back!
    Rgds,

once again, it is not a mobo issue since the memory controller is on the CPU. What kind of CPU are you using? Did you place your memory in slots 1&2 (green and purple)? what are the memory timings and voltages that you are using in BIOS?
Hello Stick, My new PC with a diamond plus mobo should arrive tomorrow (see signature for rest of bits). Over the last few weeks I've read most of what has been written here on this mobo. You have on a number of occasins commented that the memory problem, if it is a problem, is CPU related which must be true in the strictest sense but surely the mobo configuration and control systems must also play a part? If this were not the cae then would not other forums be commenting on similar memory problems with AMD 64 CPUs? If that is correct then the solution lies with MSI.
By the way, I make these comments to you because you appear to have consierable experience with MSI boards and I hope will shed more light on the issue rather than confuse.
Talking of confusion, I tried to banish that from my mind by downloading the PDF manual for the diamond plus. Its states that double-sided memory will only run in dual channel mode if 2 separate DImm channels are used (assuming you only have 2 sticks). Channel A is on Dimm1 and 3, Channel B is on Dimm2 and 4 - therefore, and the manual makes this clear, if you have two sticks the choice is to put the sticks in DIMM1 and 2, or, DIMM3 and 4. There are no other choices! Putting sticks in DIMM1 and 3 will not enable dual-channel and the result is DDR333.
But, the manual might be wrong, I might not understand it correctly -  both?
Bottom line - I'm confused and doubtful about exactly where the sticks should go. I think I have it right above.
Dear Stick, please jot down a few lines indicating what you believe the correct solution is for two sticks of double-sided memory running dual-channel at DDR400.
    Thanks very much, Tanimbar

You will have to contact MSI Tech Support on that one, that question has crossed my mind to whether that is a full function PCI slot or not.  It is the only open PCI slot if you have a Graphics Card in the Secondary x16 slot.  If it is full function PCI slot, the only thing I know of that stop you using your 64-bit Controller in it are two Caps that may get in the way of the card over hang.
    Burmo,
You should know your subject before you make comments like that on the Forum.  Most all PCI 64-bit I/O cards will auto sense the slot type they are plugged into and adjust the interface to fit the slot capabilities.  Only problems using a 64-bit PCI card in a 32-bit PCI slot is you loss interface bandwidth and there maybe physical components mounted behind the 32-bit slot that will not allow the PCI 64-bit card to be inserted.
Luckily I have communicated with Charker enough, that I do not think you statement would have steed him wrong, but someone with a low level of computer knowledge, you could have cost him/her a lot of money.  Those Controller cards he is talking about cost two or three times what the Diamond Plus motherboard costs.  Next time research you answers before you make it, if you not sure and if you do not know do not comment.

When submitting a problem, include a complete list of your system components; include part numbers, all Power Supply Voltages, and their output ratings.  It is almost impossible to estimate what your problem is without knowing something about it.
