Best ADSL modem for Time Capsule

Hi all,
Just about to buy Time Capsule and wondered what would be the best ADSL modem to use. Looking for something compact and fairly inexpensive.
Are the Zoom X3 and X4's any good?
Thanks.

Hi Ketty
No replies? Unfortunately Im in the same situation.. Haven't had any luck finding the perfect modem..

  • Best for ADSL modem or Time Capsule to do NAT?

I'm hoping to pick up a Time Capsule in the very near future (like tonight if they have the new ones in) and wanted to ask a general question about set-up.
I have a ADSL router/modem which will be connected to the Time Capsule. Is there a general rule as to whether it best to let the Time Capsule or the ADSL modem/router do the NAT etc.? My hunch is that for maximum chance of everything working nicely, such as "Back to my Mac", it would be best to use the modem to do as little as possible and get the Time Capsule to do as much as possible (NAT, firewall etc.).
    Any comments?

Start with this and do some exploring if you are interested. http://www.dlink.com.au/
You'll need to find the model number of your modem and there may be another number that's usually on a label on the bottom of the product that you may need as well.
Look for the instructions to reset the modem back to factory defaults. There will be a default user name like "admin" and a default password which you can change when you get into the setup of the modem.
This link may help as well. http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=DSLmodemS1008
10.1.1.1 is indeed one of the addresses for D-Link, but there are others like a 192.168.xxx.xxx type of number. To set up the modem, you will hook it up directly to your computer.

  • Best modem for Time Capsule

I don't see any recent questions for this don't freak if it's a repeat Q.
NB: I"m only talking about home network speeds. not the internet
I'm finding them slow and nothing like the 1Gbps + speeds advertised. more like 70Mbps!
Is this because my EE bright spark modem only has 100Mbps LAN ports?
So if I purchase a new modem with 1Gbps WAN ports it should boost my home network speeds?
I'm assuming the TC and my MBA are talking to each other wirelessly on ac wifi but I think it may be the wired connection slowing things down?
If thats the case, which modem should I buy?
    Thanks in advance

I was about to do that today and I checked the wifi and I'm connected to the 5Ghz ac at 867Mbps.
Is there anything to be gained by swapping my stand ISP provided modem router (with wifi disabled) with a dedicated ethernet modem placed in bridge mode so that the TC is doing all the work.
After a bit of research  this one seems to be highly rated. Below is the description which might as well be Greek to me.
    Thanks in advance Bob.
The DrayTek Vigor 120 is an ADSL modem with an Ethernet connection; it is not a router but a true ADSL Ethernet Modem. By providing a PPPoE to PPPoA bridge, the connected device (firewall, router or PC) can log into the Internet (your ISP) directly and have full control over the ADSL connection - that makes the Vigor 120 a unique product. You can connect any device to the Vigor 120 which has a PPPoE client facility, which includes PCs, most Ethernet-WAN routers and the Apple Airport/Time Capsule™ products.
Other ADSL Ethernet 'modems' use workarounds to get a public IP address 'through' to your secondary device/client, requiring non-standard operation and complicated dual-stage setup (modem logs in, router routes) but the Vigor 120 provides the secondary device with a real routed IP connection and the ability to fully manage the connection, making setup easy. In most cases, the Vigor 120 needs nosetup or configuration - just plug it in and set up your PC or router. All login/ISP details are entered on the connected client device, not the Vigor 120. The actual connection to your ISP is still PPPoA (unlike other modems which only provide PPPoE native bridging), which is the unique feature of this product and makes it compatible with all UK ISPs, where PPPoA is used as standard.
This method also differs from using a regular ADSL router which logs in itself and then uses NAT or multiple public IP addresses to create an onward client connection for your secondary device; that is not IP Address thrifty, or introduces secondary NAT compromises. With the Vigor 120 bridge/modem, you get a true single public IP address (or multiple, if you have them) straight through to your firewall/router, which also has complete control of the ISP connection.

  • What is best modem for time capsule with cable internet?

    We're subscribing to Comcast

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Any modem will work. Note that you will only use your modem to connect your Time Capsule to it using an Ethernet cable, and it will bring the Internet connection to the Time Capsule, so all modems do the same

  • Preparing ADSL network for Time Capsule + n vs g

I have just ordered ADSL service with a company that won't provide any hardware (microfilters, modem/router etc.) for a house I am moving to.
At the moment I am using an AX to create my network, but I was planning on getting a Time Capsule for use in the new place.
My question is - what sort of product should I get to take the ADSL connection and feed it to the AX or eventually the Time Capsule?
BT says that my line will support 3.5megabits/second: does this mean that there won't be a difference between an 'n' network and a 'go network? That is - once I have the Time Capsule, should I take the AX out of the loop to maintain a wireless 'n' network or does the slow speed of connection mean that there won't be a perceivable difference?
Does the choice here affect what sort of modem I should get?
    Thanks for any help!

BT says that my line will support 3.5megabits/second: does this mean that there won't be a difference between an 'n' network and a 'go network?
For Internet access that is correct. In fact even the old and slow 802.11b is faster than your Internet connection.
You would only notice a speed difference if you are transferring files between your machines and they were 802.11n capable.
That is - once I have the Time Capsule, should I take the AX out of the loop to maintain a wireless 'n' network or does the slow speed of connection mean that there won't be a perceivable difference?
There will only be a difference during file transfers between your 802.11n capable machines. Speed of the Internet access will not be affected.
Does the choice here affect what sort of modem I should get?
    No

  • DSL Modem for Time Capsule (UK)

    Hello,
I will move soon and have a BT Broadband Internet Access available.
I know that BT is sending a BT Home Hub and I would like to combine this with my Time Capsule.
I looked a little bit in the internet and found that there are sometime some problems with this combination.
Because I don't need the phone which comes with the BT Home Hub I was thinking about buying a quiet cheep DSL Modem and use it with the Time Capsule. But I don't know what is good and what not.
So I would be really glad if somebody would share his knowledge about some experience with the combination of DSL Modem and Timecapsule and which DSL Modem he or she is using.
    Thank you in advance

I use ATT, I actually don't know which kind of modem to look at, thats why i set up this thread, but i actually tried hooking up my time capsule to the previous 2WIRE seeing if the time capsule could just bypass the router and use the modem which it did. I am just looking for a modem thats not to expensive and will work good with the time capsule. Today i also tried configuring the time capsule to work with my older PC. So far, the only problem i have is when the PC tries to connect with the actual 1TB backup, i input the password, but it says to make sure netBIOS is enabled. Do you have any idea what that is?

  • Modem for Time Capsule

Today I purchased a 1TB Time Capsule. I was ill informed that our previous router also had the modem built in to it. So we bought the time capsule and spent 3 hours trying to set it up only to figure out that we needed another modem for the time capsule to actually work. We have looked all over and the cheapest one i found is at least 75$. Does anyone know of any specific modems that work well with the time capsule yet not too pricey?

  • HT1178 How setup and configure time capsule with ADSL modem for WiFi internet

For my first time time capsule 2TB set up,would like to know about configuration time capsule with ADSL modem for use WiFi internet!

You will want to turn off the WiFi on your modem (if there is WiFi on your modem). Connect the TC and the modem together with an Ethernet cable. Then, turn on your TC and set it up to be in bridged mode, connection type 'Ethernet'.

  • What type of modem do i need for time capsule. I can't get it to pick up the net

what type of modem do i need for time capsule. I can't get it to pick up the net

    Simply bridge the TC..
With DSL you need to either bridge the modem and use PPPoE client which can be difficult to setup.. especially as some modems do not bridge readily..
Or bridge the TC which is simple.. go to the airport utility and select internet page, on v5 utility or network page on v6 utility and select off-bridged mode for the mode of connection.

  • Express as booster for time capsule

I'm trying to set up airport express as a wireless booster for time capsule which is wired to my modem.
I keep reading about setting up WDS but am using airport utilities 5.5 which doesn't have that option. Can anyone tell me how to set this up? every time I select express in the utilities page I get a prompt asking if I want to switch wireless set ups. Utterly lost

You need to check a setting on your Time Capsule (TC) before you try to configure the AirPort Express (AX) so leave it (the AX) powered off for now and go through the following steps for your TC:
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Make sure that there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Make a written note of your wireless network name and security settings as they will be needed later when you configure the AX
Click Update to save any changes
Now, temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AX and power it up. (This is a more reliable method than trying to configure the AX using wireless only)
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the icons to enter a device name, password, adjust time zone settings, etc
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode should be set to "Extend a wireless network". If you don't see this choice, hold down the option key on your computer as you click on the selection box
Wireless Network Name...the name of your TC network should appear as a choice. Click to select it
Put a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Wireless Security...exact same setting as your TC network
Wireless Password...exact same setting as your TC network
Click the Music icon to make sure that AirTunes is enabled
Click Update to save your configuration settings and the AX will restart in 20-25 seconds and you should get the green light. You can disconnect the ethernet cable, power down the AX and them move it to the desired location.
If you need further information, Apple's instructions to setup the "extend a wireless network" feature can be found on pages 43-44 of this Airport Networks Guide.
Please post back on your progress.

  • Do I need to keep my external hard drive connected at all times for time capsule?

Do I need to keep my external hard drive connected at all times for time capsule?

    Hi,
I have a similar question. I have backed up my external hard drive through my computer, onto my TC. When I go into TM, it doesn't show the external hard drive unless it is connected to the computer. Can I access the info from the external hard drive that is on the TC if I don't have the hard drive plugged in? If so, how can I do that?
    Thanks,
    Bernadette

  • Use external drive for Time Capsule backups AND file storage?

I have an external drive formatted by my MBP.  I'm using it to store my iTunes music library and iPhoto pics.  Can I use the drive for Time Capsule backups as well?

Yes, but that is not recommended. Storage and backup should be kept separate to reduce the chances of a disk failure. This is especially important because you cannot even partition a Time Capsule drive. Go get a separate drive for your storage needs. Get another drive for a second backup and use a different method of backup than Time Machine

  • Configure syslog for Time Capsule

I have seen some items on this in the forums, but to be honest..I would this would be pretty simple to find somewhere, but none of what I see seems to work, plus like 2 - 3 years old...whats up with that?
Can someone give me instructions for setting up syslog config for Time Capsule, going to the latest Apple Mini
    Thanks, Joshua

This Apple article may not give you the whole story, but it may help.  One thing it doesn't seem to do is tell you where to find that information on the Mac that's receiving the Syslog information.  Since you know enough about that to ask, I'll hope that you already know that.
