Best Advanced Director Forum ???

Hi guys,
I'm new to Director, but not new to programming at all. I
seem to have A LOT of difficulty finding forums where "heavy"
programming work in Director is discussed. Examples are extensive
use of Buddy API, controlling hardware through ports, interfacing
with Windows shell (e.g. right-clicking on a JPG to launch a
director projector from the context menu, and print this JPG from
the projector), IP-connections from kiosks to servers,HD video
input and imaging lingo.
Director-online seems ooookay but very outdated and
directorforum is mostly German I think. Any other hints???
Thanks,
Thomas (the new guy)

Hi Thomas,
Welcome to Director.
You can find links to forums and lists at:
http://www.fbe.unsw.edu.au/learning/director/resources/#forums
Most Director hard-core users hang out in the lists over the
forums. Direct-L is
the main one and covers the broad range of Director use. The
Dir3d-L and
DirGames-L are more advanced and have a 3D/games focus. Info
on how to join can be
found from:
http://www.fbe.unsw.edu.au/learning/director/resources/#lists

  • What's the best GENERAL Linux forum?

    Naturally, the best distro forum is right here, but where do people go for general Linux questions, discussion, kernel topics, etc? I drop into LinuxQuestions and LinuxForums every now and then - anyone have other recommendations?

    I need no help on that front.  I used the restroom at the grocery store yesterday, came out and wandered aimlessly through the produce section for about 10 minutes, gave a few "hellos", dropped a kiwi in my basket, and finally noticed my yellow shirt poking through my pant zipper.  It was too late at that point to make ammends.  I just put on my shades, walked to the register, stood in line, gave a few stares back, checked out, and walked calm and cooly back to my car.  Hands intact and never leaving the basket once...
    A fool? yes. But, a damn cool fool at that...

    Now i test once Starting of Adobe Debug launcher.
    Why does it not show? What does it happen?
    Or i have been worng coded?
    Thanks for replies!

    Hi BalusC,
    thanks for the quick answer. I tried it as you said and now I get a validation error in my h:messages tag on my jsf page after submitting the form. There are no errors in my JBoss console, just this one word on my jsf page. Do you have any idea what this could mean?
    My two lists look like this:
    private ArrayList<GroupBean> selectedItems = new ArrayList<GroupBean>();
    private ArrayList<SelectItem> allGroups = new ArrayList<SelectItem>();The allGroups list gets filled like this:
    for (GroupBean group: groups){
    allGroups.add(new SelectItem(group, group.getName()));
    }where groups is a simple collection of GroupBeans which I read from the database. This seems to be correct; at least my list of checkboxes shows the correct group names.
    Now here is my selectManyCheckbox:
    <t:selectManyCheckbox id="sensor_access" value="#{sensorBacker.selectedItems}" layout="pageDirection" layoutWidth="3">
    <f:selectItems value="#{sensorBacker.allGroups}"/>
    </t:selectManyCheckbox>Any idea what goes wrong here?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Best Practice for Portable Home Directories

    What are the 'best practice' directories to sync for Portable Homes - at login and in the background. I want to make my user experience a little better than it is now.
    Login and logout take about 2 minutes - even over ethernet 100Mb, and longer using Airport, and 'background' home directory syncing seems to always suck all of my network bandwidth - making apps like Safari unusable - even though I have barely changed anything in the folders I am syncing.
    My personal home directory is 1.5Gb, and I keep my Music, Pictures and Movies on the network - as Apple suggest.

    I generally recommend the following for the least impact on user experience:
    1. Put your server and clients that will use mobile accounts and portable homes on a Gigabit Ethernet switch. It's a small price to pay for much more customer satisfaction.
    2. Put more RAM in the server, especially if you're dealing with a few users with large homes or several users with moderately-sized (less than 1.0GB) ones. This will also let you employ server-side tracking (for 10.5 server).
    3. Only sync and login/logout. Use Workgroup Manager to define all portable preferences. Choose to manage login/logout sync, and specify the items to sync; for the whole home, use "~". Omit things like ~/.Trash. Choose to manage the background sync, but remove all items from the "sync these items" list. Choose to manage the background sync interval by setting it to manual. This way, the user doesn't accidentally configure a background sync: we've told it to sync nothing only we say it can.

    saramultimedia,
    Are you certain that you're asking your question in the right place? This forum is about the Adobe Media Encoder application. Most of the people who answer questions here are familiar with the digital video and audio applications such as After Effects and Premiere Pro.
    If you have a question about Director, it's probably best to ask on the Director forum. But I see that you already know that, since you already have a thread on that forum to ask this question, and it got an answer:

  • Flash vs Director

    Our company has an upcoming job that is going to be a high
    definition 720p kiosk with joystick controller for interactivity
    and high def videos. I'm a flash animator myself so naturally I
    want to choose Flash as I'm going to be doing all of the
    interactivity, but I'm trying to decide which would really be
    better for the situation. I've researched and read many of the
    advantages/disadvantages to both programs, but I'm still confused
    as to which would be best. Most of the information I read was from
    the MX versions of both programs or before 2005. So i'm not sure as
    to how correct the information is. I'm aware of flash's current
    abilities but not director's. Can anyone help shed some light?
    (also posted in the director forum for director's side)

    Hi,
    For Kiosk application, I think you should go with director.
    Download a trial copy and try. If you ca spare some money, go in
    for Multidmedia Zinc for converting your flash files to a kiosk
    application. Try it and then decide.
    The problem with Director is that Adobe has stopped all
    further developments of Director.

  • Best Practices in SharePoint 2010 ( Out of the box feature vs Custom Web Part, development )

    Hi
    How do we differentiate on when to allow custom web parts and when to use out of the box.
    What are the performance issues involved when we deploy a custom web part into the SharePoint server.
    Why do some companies prefer to allow only out of the box features, and no custom work is done?

    SharePoint is a powerful, flexible server product that can provide a wealth collaboration environment right out of box.
    Best answer for your question is depend upon your requirement. Sometime Out of Box features will solve all the problem with little designing. But sometime your requirement need a Custom Web part / solution.
    With OOTB implementation the big advantage is easy to trouble shoot & fix the issues. You will also found tons of blogs on internet for OOTB features. In custom development, its hard to troubleshoot & identifying whether its SharePoint issue or Custom
    code issue.

  • RDS & network printers best practices

    We are in the process of designing a multi site remote desktop solution for a customer, they have around 80 users with 5-10 users per site. I've been searching for some recommendations about the best way to deploy their network printers.
    The RDS farm is located in a single site, the other remote sites will not have a local server. Traditionally we've used site-site VPN's and just set the printers up as network printers on a central file/print server. Doing this works but you lose the benefits
    of Easy Print and potentially we may struggle with bandwidth at some sites.
    Is there a better way to do this?  One train of thought is to add the printers locally to the thin clients, then use individual printer redirection so that it utilises Easy Print. This seems to work but from a management point of view it's pretty unfriendly.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks
