Best After Effects Book

Hello im searching for a good adobe after effects (CS5 or later) book. I have no experiance in ae and i want to create effects like, magic duels (heey potter) explosions and transformation effects. What do you think?

Hi,
When I first installed After Effects, 7 months ago, I had never seen or heard of it before. I started with online tutorials while I waited to figure out what books to get as well. The tutorial links given by Szalam are a perfect place to start. The series by ANdrew Devis are absolutely brilliant - beyond brilliant in fact - somewhere in the realms of "awesome" - check out the creative cow site, as there are some new additions to the series available there.
When it comes to books, I got as many as I could - starting with Classroom in a book series and learn by video series. I also got some books on Green Screen work etc. I did by "How to cheat in After Effects" by Chad Perkins - and whereas this is a great book, with some great shortcuts in it, I would suggest getting a better understanding through the other books first, as you might tend to rely on the "Cheat" recipies too heavily otherwise, and miss out on some great effects found through trial and error!
Anyway, Peachpit is also a great resource as qell as Lynda.com.
There, that should keep you going for a while - One last place you HAVE to bookmark is VideoCopilot.com.
Hope that helps

  • What is the Best After Effects Version for my Computer?

    Hey I have a Windows 7 with a Pentium (R) Dual Core CPU T4400 @2.20GHz   2.20GHz
RAM 3.00 GB 64bit Oberating System
Display Adapter: Mobile Intel (R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
What is the best earlier model of After Effects or maybe current for my computer type?
Or what is the best settings for After Effects to run faster for animation?
    Thanks

Unless you plan on using a very old version of After Effects, which will cause a bunch of other problems on Windows 7, you simply need more RAM.  3 GB is barely enough to keep Windows running smoothly, let alone running a RAM-hungry app like AE.  Your first priority is to put more RAM in your computer.

  • Which mac is best when using after effects and video editing?

i'm looking to get a new mac to do video edititng and adobe after effects.  What should i get?  A mac book pro, imac?

I'd get a MacPro with a lot of RAM. This gives me a platform I can expand through third party video i/o cards, esata cards for external RAID boxes, extra internal drives, multiple monitors, etc and will have the longest useable life span.
    Your mileage will vary.
What it comes down to is ... Best is a subjective concept.
    Best at what?
Absolute speed? Flexibility? Expandability? Life cycle costs? Low cost of entry? or ???
Define your needs, long term plans and budget more closely and what machine to purchase will become obvious.

  • Best Quality Export From Final Cut Pro Into After Effects?

So I converted all my footage into Apple Pro Res 422 (24 p, 1280 x 720) for use in FCP and want to export edited parts into After Effects. What is the best quality export to bring into After Effects and also export from After Effects back into FCP?

    zikade wrote:
Depending on your storage and what you're up to with your footage I'd recommend uncompressed. Large files but you won't loose any quality. Animation is also lossless if you want to compress your footage. If your drives are not fast enough, go for ProRes HQ from FCP to AE, and Animation the way back...
Since you've converted to 422, stick with that. You cannot gain anything by exporting from FCP to a codec that has a higher bandwidth such as PRHQ or Animation. You just don't want to go down.
Rendering out of After Effects going back to FCP jsut use the same base codec. Again, you will gain nothing by using a higher quality codec. However, you may want to use PR4444 or even Animation if you must have an alpha channel. PR4444 uses trillions of colors and you will get an interesting warning when you try to render to it. You can dismiss the warning.
PR4444 has the distinct advantage of being realtime in FCP7 and X. Animation requires rendering back in teh FCP timeline.

  • FCP and After Effects Windows: best codec?

I still do a lot of FCP7 editing using Apple ProRes codec on my Mac. Since I recently acquired a very fast PC, I plan on using it for work on After Effects. I'll be moving renders from FCP7 to AE and vice-versa. I noticed AE on Windows lacks the ProRes codec.  I've tried rendering in AE using Lossless in both QT and AVI but when importing to FCP there's a very noticeable color difference...
What's my best course of action here?

pretty sure you can get the prores codecs for windows from apple

  • Which of these iMacs would be best for running After Effects?

Hello, pretty simple question, which of these 2 iMac configurations would be best suited for using After Effects and other video editing software like Premiere or Final Cut Pro X?
    Option 1 - 21.5 inch
3.1GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
    16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X8GB
    1TB Fusion Drive
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1GB GDDR5
    Option 2 - 27 inch
3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB
    1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2GB GDDR5
For some reason Apple don't offer more than 1GB of dedicated video ram in anything but the maxed out 27inch. Personally, I’m not fussed about the bigger screen and I would say that having the faster processor, double the ram and a fusion drive would be more beneficial than the extra gig in the video card but I’m not 100% sure, what do you guys think? Thanks.

You need 16GB of ram for AE. Whether you get the 27 or 21 you still need that much ram. AE only uses the Ray Tracer for specific processes that are often not used. I would not worry so much about the GPU with this. Take the higher CPU and atleast 16GB of ram though 32GB is ideal.

  • Best Way to Export After Effects File and Save Transparency

    Hi all-
A pretty simple question. I need to export a file from After Effects and keep the alpha channel so I can superimpose it on some video in FCE. What is the best way to export it?
I recall hearing people mention that the Animation Codec with "Millions of Colors+" is the best way to go about doing it, in which case I'd just have to render it within FCE. Is that correct? If so, are there any other settings I should tweak to get a high quality file that will work with FCE?
    Thanks.

    Hi -
Animation Millions+ will deliver an extremely high quality file with the alpha channel. You will need to render once in FC.
    Hope this helps.

  • What is the best video format for importing into After Effects CS5

Please look at this video, work in progress.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49_wbdKALQk
The opening, featuring a ribbon of videos, was created in After Effects, using Digieffects Freeform.
The  issue is the poor quality of the videos that are featured in the  opening -- compared to the higher quality of videos from the original Premiere  project., which you can see at the end of the clip.
To create the After Effects project, I exported a series of video clips from Premiere  to mp4.
Then I imported them into AfterEffects.
The bottom line, and the purpose of this question, is I am thinking that  MP4 was not the best choice for the Adobe Premiere export.
What  is the best format to export video from in Premiere Pro CS5 to import  into after effects, or to import into any other editing program,  incuding importing right back into Adobe Premiere, if that is eever  needed.
    AVI?
    MOV
    MP4
And any other settings that will result with the highest qualiity videos for importing.
    Thanks

To follow on with Wade's suggestion...
There are lots of ways to get movies and projects and other things back and forth between After Effects and Premiere Pro. This page outlines them:
"Working with Premiere Pro and After Effects"
If you must render and export a movie out of one application to bring it into another, there is a very basic piece of video workflow advice that you need to keep in mind (which applies to _all_ video software, not just After Effects and Premiere Pro):
If you're creating a movie to be used in the next step of a post-production pipeline, you _never_ want to use a format that does lossy compression. You either use no compression or (preferable) lossless compression. Examples of codecs that provide lossless compression are the Animation codec and PNG codec at the highest quality settings; these can be used in a QuickTime container, for example. Never compress a movie with lossy compression except at the very end of your pipeline, when you're creating the final movie for distribution.
MP4 (MPEG-4) is a lossy codec. The quality loss is acceptable for the last stage in the pipeline, but it's not acceptable for an intermediate file.
It seems that you would benefit from reading this and and working your way through this.

  • Best export format for importing into After Effects or even back into Premiere

Okay, here's where I stand at this point regarding exporting and/or dynamic linking between AfterEffects and Premiere.
I'm in After Effects.  I create a composition I like.  So I first tried the old fashioned way. I exported it into a MOV file with the animation preset. Millions of colors.  Same frame rate as my Premiere project, which also uses MOV files with no problem.
Howver when I import the MOV file created by After effects, the NEW MOV file section of the premier project plays sluggish.  And it also causes the videos that follow to play sluggish.   And they are all MOV files at the same frame rate.
The same thing happens when I do a dynamic link between the two projects.  A sluggish response starting with the After Effects dynamic link and affecting the MOV video files that follow.
It's a very short After Effects composition.  About 3 second slong.
I have a very powerful computer built especially for CS5 and premiere --so that should not be an issue -- recently was in the top ten of the benchmark list.
Up to this point my video files have played perfectly layer upon layer with no problems.
Is there something I am not considering?
    Thanks.

  • 1080i to 720p via After Effects Best Practice?

Hi, I have some footage which was shot at 1080i, the required output is going to be 720p.  The problem is that I would like to use some of the extra frame to reframe some of the shots and as there were two camera's used, the colour varies, so I will also need to fix that.
My initial plan was to cut the sequence in Premiere using a 1080i preset then DL the sequence from within After Effects using a 720p composition.  From here I can do the reframing and colour work.  However will this take care of deinterlacing? Or does anyone know of a better workflow to get the results I need?
    Cheers

Just to update this incase somebody else finds it useful, decided I would have to spend some time testing the best route before actually starting the project.
So the source footage was shot @ 1080 50i AVCHD (Cannon Legria HF21 and Panasonic HDC-HS700).  The desired outcome of the footage is web distribution, so mp4 @ 720p 25fps.
During editing I really wanted to re-frame some of the shots and also give some motion to some i.e. slow panning.  On top of that the two cameras used, always seem to give different colours in post - no matter how much you try to match the LCD display's during the actual shoot.
Ok so the problem I initally encountered was with jaggered edges when deinterlacing (can't afford any third pary plugin's at the moment).
So that's the background - I tried a couple of different routes, however the best way I have found is to edit the footage in Premiere using the default 1080i AVCHD preset, keeping the Cannon footage on video 1 and the Panasonic footage on video 2.  Once all the editing is done, duplicate the sequence and in one enable video 1 and in the other enable video 2.
Then jump into After Effects use dynamic link to open the the two sequences - here I open the interpret footage settings and make sure that the field order is set correctly and that 'Preserve Edges' is ticked.
I then created a new composition with 720p settings and put the the two Premiere sequences in it.  Then it is just a case of using keyframes to reframe the footage.  Also it allows for applying different colour correction to the footage shot on each camera.
I also found that this process decreases the jagged edges found going from interlace to progressive.
Hope that helps someone, or someone can tell me I am going the long way round

  • Best laptop for working with after effects

I need a laptop for work with adobe after effects and some others. Anyway I need laptop wich will not cost more than 1400€ and which will have inside intel core i7, 4 GB of memory or more and Nividia graphic card. Somthing more pls dont say the apple is the best beacuse i dont like it very much.
    Thanks.

4GB is a rather small amount of RAM for working with After Effects. If you can get a computer with more RAM, I recommend doing so.
For After Effects CS5, the graphics card (GPU) doesn't matter as much as RAM and CPUs, so focus on RAM and CPUs first.
In general, a laptop is not going to give you the same performance as a desktop computer of the same price. If you need a laptop, fine; but don't be surprised when performance isn't as good as you might like.

  • Producing a Video - Best Render Settings for After Effects & Premiere Pro?

    Hi Guys,
I just want to make sure I am producing my video the right way .... it takes an awfully long time and I have to use 2 programs....
First I have a 1080p HD Camcorder - so when I shoot my videos I want to ensure they are 1080p.
So I do my editing in After Effects and produce the video as an AVI file - and usually a 5 min clip outputs as 70GB (Full Quality Settings)
I then take this video and import it into Premiere Pro and produce it as WMV file (Full Quality) and then the final output is 200MB and the quality is not lost - so I am happy.
So my question is am I doing it the best way?
I tried to produce it as a WMV straight from After Effects but I am not sure what settings to pick that will keep the quality and not make the filesize huge - so I am forced to use 2 programs.
So if there is an easier way let me know ... bc it sucks using 2 programs to render out the video.
And also is that normal - 200mb for a 5 min clip or is that still too big?
Remember I want to keep things 1080p.
If you want to see a sample of my video that I am producing - you can watch my YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/socialmindz
    Thanks for your help.

    I agree with Rick.
